Worst Chinese food EVER! My egg roll was literally dripping grease, the chicken tasted like fish and the egg foo young was also soaked in grease. And the gravy was the color of mustard. I was so disappointed and when I told the waiter all he said was okay. Didn't even attempt to offer any compensation. My husband kept telling me the place looked sketchy but I just had to try and almost threw up my last bite. No ambiance at all. read more

I've given this place at least three chances and every time is a disappointment. Last time I went we ordered orange chicken, kung pao chicken and the Mongolian beef. All three dishes had very little meat and the box was filled with mostly veggies. Which would've been fine but the Mongolian beef was filled with mainly onion and like I said little to no meat. My order of sesame chicken was pretty mid if I'm being honest. The sauce it comes in was insanely sweet so a lot of times I would try to take off some of the sauce against my plate in order to eat it. It had good flavor but it was just too much sugar. And for the main reason I'm submitting a review, is that I got way too many pieces of just fried batter. I put a photo of a big piece I got. This should not be happening because now I don't think I'll come back due to the paranoia of just getting served a lot of batter as a filler to make more money. read more

I think this place used to be famous for giving large portions, but just average Chinese food. Now the portions are still very good sized, but the food is some of the best Chinese food I've had. Complex delicious sauces, great preparation, beautiful presentation absolutely the best Chinese food in Whatcom county and a good rival for many of the top places in Vancouver. Don't let the exterior or the interior or the fact that they make you order at the counter fool you, this is spectacular Chinese food. read more

Reasonably priced for mid Chinese food. The strange thing though is that staff are completely aloof. They don't seem gracious or helpful.

Some of the worst American Chinese food we've ever had. Our usual place was closed so we tried here. We did takeout so cannot comment on service inside. Everything had a ton of breading. The egg foo young was deep fried. I couldn't even tell there was egg in it. I wouldn't have known what kind of meat was in the sesame beef if I hadn't ordered it myself, as it was so unrecognizable in all the breading. The lemon chicken was a thin chicken breast coated in panko with a lemon sauce on the side. The walnut prawns were tough and also covered in too much breading. Egg rolls were very greasy and the crab wontons were hard. Would not recommend this place. read more

I've been going to Best Chopsticks for many years. Is it the best in the city? No. However, there are a few things I like and other things not so much. Over the years, I've learned to pick and chose. Two favorites are: soft noodle pork chow mein and won ton noodle soup with an addition of pork. The portions are very generous and the prices very reasonable. I almost always have leftovers. Granted they are frustrating at times: occasionally closed when they are listed as open, sometimes you can dine in, sometimes not, they at times don't answer their phone, etc. But, as a famous philosopher once said, "It is what it is". Bottom line: I would miss them if they were gone. read more

Ordered the Szechuan Pork, Orange Chicken and appetizer platter. I think they must have mixed up the Szechuan pork with another dish. Or their version is just really bland. Very little spice or flavor to it. Orange chicken was better, but still felt like I could buy a cheap bag of it in the frozen food section and have it taste just as good (if not better). But there were a few decent aspects to the experience. 1) the quantities are great. 2) the app platter was very tasty, although not very healthy. Overall, pretty disappointing experience. The Covid has really put a damper on trying out restaurants. Chinese is always good for take-out and I had wanted to try this place for some time. They are closed to dine-in so I did the traditional take-out. I was in the mood for some spicy food and ordered Kung Pao Chicken extra spicy. They cooked it at the usual fast pace more Chinese places do. They used a foam box for the food. That is used for a combo dinner. Odd, as it's a notably smaller portion than other of the same category take-outs. Arriving home, I tried the dish. It was pretty bland for spicy. They used a standard brown sauce, and it was even a bit on the dry side as they skimped on the amount of sauce. All this for an extra $1.50 over their competitors. I really wanted to give a raving review, I just couldn't. The price was higher, and the food was average to below average on taste. I may try a different dish next time. It will be a wait, as there are much better Chinese places with more flavor to offer. read more

The food was decent. The service was not so great. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was a burden. The server, an older Lady, walked right past me without even acknowledging presence as soon as I entered. Yes she was clearing a table but just a quick hello or "be right with you" would go a long way. When I asked to be sat, she asked if I was ready to order. I didn't realize you ordered and paid, first, then sat. Okay. Ordered a house Lo Mein and a curry beef. The Lo Mein came out first and it was huge, so I mentioned I'd need a to go box. She brought out the Curry Beef wrapped to go. I felt like I was inconveniencing her so I ate some and boxed the rest to go. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, lots of fresh veggies, tasty utility grade beef, good lo-mein with a nice cooked taste. But, will I go back? Nope. I appreciate each and everyone of my customers in my business. If I'm going to spend $27 on decent Mall Chinese, I'm going to expect some friendly service...even if it's faked. Let me start by apologizing to my fellow Yelpers that my review has gotten gigantic! If you don't have the time to read it, I do not take any offense to it. If you have time to waste, enjoy it! So, this is one of two Chinese restaurants that I go to in town, the other being Panda Palace on Sunset Square. I'm not claiming that I tried all the Chinese restaurants in town, but after trying quite a few in the last 14 years, these are the two I still go to. I think Best Chopsticks is one of the most affordable restaurants in Bellingham (Chinese or otherwise). Almost all of their dishes, except for some seafood dishes, are under $10, including their lunch specials ($8~$9) and dinner specials ($9~$10). Their lunch and dinner specials come with rice (steamed or fried), soup (egg drop or sweet and sour), and a side ("egg roll" or cheese wonton). I agree with Sarah F. that their stir fried dishes (e.g., Szechuan chicken) are oily, a bit too oily even for Chinese food. There are, however, miscellaneous things I like about this place other than the affordability I mentioned earlier. Pros: + It is Americanized but not as "bad" as other places in town. Some of my friends from China and Hong Kong have agreed with me on this. + They serve (fried) spring rolls. Even their menu says "egg rolls," but I'm sure those are spring rolls (the skin is much thinner and multiple layers as opposed to a single lay of thick skin on egg rolls). Egg rolls, we can find any Chinese restaurants in the US or even in the freezer section of a grocery store, but spring rolls are not easy to find. + It's owned by a local family, and they are very hard working. We are not friends but I know this because one of their children went to the same daycare as my son (6~7 years ago). Their service can be very slow (e.g., during lunch time) because it's in downtown, but even I, who hate slow service" can be sympathetic because I believe they always do their best (hence the name?). + I did takeout and got the almond fried chicken. I learned that they'd put the sauce/gravy in a separate container because the sauce would make the fried chicken soggy. Another reviewer said she also got her sweet sour chicken sauce on the side. I don't know of any other Chinese restaurant that does that; it's simply too much of a hassle for most restaurants, and most people would not even question what they are used to until they experience something different. (Potential) Cons: - A little too oily. So, I don't eat Chinese food often; so, it does not bother me much. - Their service can be slow. Because I know this, I don't eat here during busy time if I don't have much time. They serve their lunch specials until 3:30pm. If you have flexibility, it's not difficult to avoid the busiest hour(s). Even after 3:30, the same specials are served as dinner specials and cost only $1 or so more. - With due respect to the owners, I don't think one can bring a date here. There are cons but they are all potential cons at least for me. It's not fine dining by any means, but I think it's great for what it is/what you pay for. We recently moved from California to Bellingham and have been looking for good Chinese food around the area. We found Chopsticks and it was a disappointment. We did a take-out order of salt and pepper pork chop, kung pao chicken, sauteed broccoli, house-fried rice, and egg rolls. Every dish was very, very, very bland. So bland that even Panda Express food is better in terms of flavor and spicy. All I can say is, if you are just plain hungry, this is a good place to fill your stomach because of the good portions they give. Otherwise, this is not a place to get good Chinese food. Yeah. To be clear, I have been going here for about 15 years. I've tried many things, but my go to is always Singapore noodles or Mongolian beef. I generally get an order of both, so I have leftovers the next day. Unfortunately, the Mongolian beef is more crispy onions than beef as of late so I haven't been purchasing it that much. And then this last weekend I ended up just getting Singapore noodles to go. I don't know what is going on with this place but it's just become not worth it. There were only three little pieces of shrimp in the dish, and the amount of noodles is about a third of what there usually is. Usually there's a pretty big mound that touches the top of the container when closed. This order didn't even make it to the top of the half-shell of the container. $12 for essentially a little bit of vermicelli noodles with curry powder on it. On top of that, it seemed to be missing something. I don't know what it is but the flavor was also very different from the 200 other times that I've purchased this. This change in quality and quantity has been happening quite a bit lately to the point that this will be the last time I come back. read more

Food is delicious, however the last 2 times I've been there around 4 they have been closed. I was there today at 3:45 & the sign said it was closed yet you could walk in. They were eating & said they wouldn't open again until 4:30. I live in Bellingham, and therefore, I don't expect excellent or the more classic traditional Chinese food as one can find in Surrey, Vancouver, or NY Chinatown. I am Chinese American from NY and have experienced Chinese Food that few non-Chinese have. With that introduction, I like Best Chopsticks. I often order the Noodle Soup (veggie, seafood, or meat), sometimes the Chow Fun (pan fried wide rice noodles), or the fried rice. I particular like the noodle soups, it is probably the most authentic Chinese dish there. The food is fresh; the service is friendly. And with your order you get a pot of hot tea. This is one nice aspect of most Chinese restaurants. With other places, hot tea is an extra charge, sometimes at $3 a cup. I go at off hours, after the lunch hour or pass the dinner hour, the restaurant is usually quiet and service is always friendly. It is not necessarily a romantic place, but the lighting is soft, i.e., not harsh, and one can engage in conversation without have to compete with loud music or loud noises. If you are in Bellingham, WA, I think this is the best place for inexpensive tasty Chinese food. It is simple, relaxing, and exudes Chinese culture without being pretentious or over the top. read more

Hate to give a low rating during Covid when restaurants need our help...but they need to do their job, too, to earn good reviews no matter what else is going on. Especially at 6 pm on a quiet Monday night. Agree completely with the many reviews that it is bland and flavorless; we ordered 4 different dishes and outside of consistency, everything tasted the same. Beige and boring, essentially. No zing, no spice, no authentic flavors, kind of like the old Chun King frozen dinners from the sixties. Not worth 50 bucks, in any decade. And for takeout packaging and presentation, I was creeped out three ways: First, the dinners were packed in very thin styrofoam clamshell things that actually melted and distorted on the drive home, so a couple were flattened and curled and leaking contents. Second, we asked for some extra moo-shoo pancakes, and they sent us home with the logo'd original package from the food service company, simply cut open on one end. And last, they just tossed loose unwrapped fortune cookies into a plastic bag with loose plastic utensils and soy sauce packs. Really, during virus times? That whole bag went straight into the trash. Along with the many leftovers, unfortunately. Gotta be something better when you are halfway between Seattle and Vancouver! read more

I was in Bellingham helping my son with some errands. We were hungry, and I noticed that this place had no empty tables, so I had to try it. Disclaimer: I lived in Taiwan for a while and know Chinese and recognize great Chinese food. This is not great Chinese food, but we enjoyed it, the price was great, service was very good, and it was better than I expected. My son had chicken chow mien with hot & sour soup and fried rice. I had Szechuan beef with hot & sour soup and fried rice. The host complimented me on my pronunciation of Szechuan, which I found mildly humorous. My adult son said his noodles were great. There were numerous small pieces of chicken and other things in the noodles. He cleaned his plate. The hot & sour soup was not too sour and low on spiciness. Some tables had Sriracha sauce, and I saw some metal containers that probably had Chinese chili paste or hot oil, so you can kick it up if you like. My Szechuan beef had good slices of beef. It was low on spices, although I could tell some hot pepper had been used, I would rate it less than one star hot. I added soy sauce to up the flavor factor. There were good slices of zucchini that were a bit overcooked for my taste, but they were not mushy and seemed to be from fresh produce. The fried rice was done right and had a good flavor that comes from a very hot wok. Portions were appropriate. We left filled, but not with extras. We had the spring rolls, but I do not enjoy spring rolls, so all I have to say is they were hot and freshly prepared. We were served big glasses of good cool water without ice and black tea. We also received fortune cookies--Rose Brand, made in Seattle. My other son happened to be in Bellingham at the time, so I invited him to join us. I let the host know, and he immediately brought a menu, napkin, fork, and another water to the table. He asked if I'd order for him, but we waited for him to come. Our host was attentive to notice he had arrived, and took his order right away. Yes, you can find better Chinese food in other places. This food was a great value, satisfying, and flavorful even though I like it a bit spicy. That and the good service will have me returning at some future trip to Bellingham. read more

This was a really good restaurant! We ordered the General Tso's chicken (with fried rice, an egg roll and hot & sour soup) along with Chicken Chow Mein (with the same sides). I really enjoyed the General Tso's because it had a crunchy outside (from being fried) and a great sauce it was tossed in. My boyfriend said that the chicken Chow Mein was good as well but there wasn't much chicken in his. All in all I'd recommend this place to anyone that wants good Chinese food that is reasonably priced! read more
