I've eaten at a lot of Korean restaurants in my life, and my mother makes some of the best Korean food I've ever had--so I don't say this lightly: eating here felt like eating at home. Everything tasted the way Korean food should taste. The flavors were balanced and authentic--not overly sweet like so many places tend to do. The kimchi was hands down some of the best I've had in a long time--perfectly ripened with incredible depth of flavor. We ordered the soft tofu soup, rice cake soup, and spicy pork, and every dish was excellent. Comforting, flavorful, and clearly made with care. On top of the food, the service was wonderful. The owner was incredibly kind and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Please support this lovely restaurant in Bellingham. It's the kind of place you hope stays around for a long time. After driving from SeaTac to Bellingham with no breaks, all I wanted was comfort food and what YunGaNe offered was exactly what I wanted. Truthfully I ordered entirely too much food for a single person...I couldn't say no based in the description and picture in the menu...I honestly could have ordered everything. I ordered: Shrimp Tempura: appropriately crunchy Beef Bulgogi: Classic taste, exactly what I wanted for dinner Crazy Boy Kimchi: had a good spice but not overwhelming while the vegetables were not chewy-loved it! Deep fried Oreo cookies: I don't usually see this sort of dessert anywhere let alone at a Korean restaurant...had to give this a try...let me say that the cookie softened to the point where it was more like a chocolate goo while the tempura part was not as crispy as I expected. It was worth a try but not my favorite. Overall, YunGaNe has everything anyone wanting Korean cuisine could offer. I stuck with my comfort favorites and was more than satisfied. Main dish was okay to good. Service also okay. I had beef bulgogi, and my wife had stone pot beef bibimbap. Where it gets not so good is with side dishes. I've been eating at Korean restaurants for forty years. I've never had such small and not so tasty side dishes, and I've never had just four of them. My wife's dish didn't even come with side dishes. I paid an extra seven dollars so she would get some. It definitely wasn't worth it, and if I knew beforehand you only get four small side dishes that weren't very good, I never would have ordered them. read more

Came here for a family lunch the other day. Pros- really good flavors for each dish, generous portions, and really helpful customer service. Favorites were the chicken and beef bulgogi dishes. I also really enjoyed the Korean rice cake desserts (lactose free, but has nuts). Cons- I saw bonchon on the menu as a purchasable entree, but assumed it would come when you ordered meat and other dishes there, it did not. Very unusual for a Korean restaurant... my first experience of bonchon not being automatically served, so I thought that was odd. Otherwise, we all enjoyed our meal and the leftovers! read more

Today I ordered bulgogi, tteok-mandu soup, and pork cutlet through Uber. I chose the regular bulgogi instead of the beef bento because it was supposed to come with side dishes, but when I opened the package, there were no side dishes at all--even though I paid more. The tteok-mandu soup was also disappointing. The container had plenty of space, but there was very little broth, so the rice cakes and dumplings were stuck together and difficult to eat. If this is a packaging issue, the broth and solids should be packed separately. I called the restaurant because I was unhappy with the order. It was difficult to get through, and the staff was not very helpful. When I finally spoke with the owner and asked about the missing side dishes, she immediately blamed the Uber driver. She didn't even apologize. I suggested that it would make sense to check with their staff who packed the order first. While she was speaking with her staff, I heard someone say, "I might have forgotten to pack it." However, the owner still insisted that everything had been packed correctly. Overall, I was very disappointed with both the food and how the situation was handled. I would not recommend this place based on this experience Update: 4/26 I am extremely concerned that the owner publicly mentioned my name and made false accusations, including calling "racist," which is completely untrue. I speak both Korean and English, and as a Korean myself, I did not make any racist remarks. This accusation is completely false and inappropriate. During our phone conversation, I clearly heard a staff member say, "I might have forgotten to pack one." Despite this, the owner denied any mistake and blamed the Uber delivery driver. My review was based on a simple issue: missing items and poor packaging. Instead of resolving the issue, the situation escalated with unprofessional behavior and public accusations. I stand by my experience. Customers should not be publicly targeted or misrepresented in this way. read more

The super patient and friendly waiter answered all my questions, as I couldn't be sure of some of the dishes without their Korean-English names (e.g, "Korean Sweet Potato Noodle" is actually Japchae). I got Kimchi Stew (Kimchi Jiigae), but I skipped the pork. This is one of my favorite Korean dishes, so I order it often when eating out. This one was very good, with the flavors I expect. They serve purple rice, which is a mixture of white rice and black rice (which changes the color of the white rice, but also adds nutritional benefits). My husband had Stone pot bibimbap (Dolsot bibimbap), but skipped the egg and bulgogi. He said it might be the best dolsot bibimbap he's ever had. Not just because of the rice (it's usually just bland white, so he found their purple rice far more tasty), but the nurungji was perfect - crisp, without being burned. There wasn't a lot, but it added to the overall taste. The ingredients were also above average, especially the mushrooms (possibly Songyi?). The ban chan was very fresh and tasty, but the amount of each item, and the variety (4) was a bit skimpy. I've noticed a downward trend in ban chan in many Korean restaurants lately, so this isn't unique to Yungane. I'm used to paying quite a bit less for Korean food in my area. But there is no competition in this area for Korean food, and it might be more expensive to source the needed ingredients here. read more

Place is good, nice staff, good ambiance. It isn't a Korean BBQ place like I was thinking at first. It is more like a Teriyaki style place that service Korean dishes. Their Banchean is a little plain, it would be better with more options. However, if you are in the mood for Korean food, this place will work for you. But if you want the full Korean BBQ, might have to find a different location. Overall good experience and I look forward to going again soon. read more

A great dining experience. Greeted and seated most cheerfully. We ordered the Bulgogi Bibimbap (stone pot), the Kalbi Short Ribs and Honey Glazed Wings. Ribs were well seasoned and surprisingly filling w/sides. Bibimbap (photo) was tasty but rice a bit overcooked.! Comes out super hot and sizzling better than any fajita platter but that's to be expected and adds to the anticipation of that crispy rice crist. Yum! Sauce left for individuals to add depending on desire for spice. (My wife's is a bit timid with new cuisine and this was her first adventure into Korea.) My only regret not ordering extra kimchi. Portions were appropriate for reasonable price. Nice amount of seating for couples or small groups. Several screens playing a loop of KPop so you have been warned, lol. This is my favorite Korean food in Bellingham. Great place, although it's almost always hard to find parking downtown on most weekends, but otherwise a great location and incredible food. The bulgolgi is delicious as is the bibimbap. And it's the only place downtown that I know of where I can grab a soju. read more

I went here with a friend on Jan 11th. I just wanted some Korean food for dinner and good thing we found this restaurant in Bellingham. We went to buy coffee at first and came back for dinner. Staff helped us giving a parking change for the meter. We came back shortly after spending time at Neko Cat Cafe. We ordered Pork Katsu ($22.00) with extra rice. Pork Katsu came with a salad and rice. Banchan had a variety of broccoli, fish cake, kimchi and radish. Never been to a Korean resto with different side dishes. Meat was SO thin and dry. I've eaten better ones from Katsuya for this price. It tasted same as H mart food court in downtown Vancouver. Staff was very lovely. He helped us again to find direction to Trader Joe's from this neighbourhood. read more

Bland, very few vegetables and the chicken was tough as rubber. The chicken Katsu was also atrocious. The chicken was thin as an inner tube and just as dry and tough. I think Yun might be the hardest working woman in Bellingham. When it's busy in there, her feet barely touch the floor, she's moving so fast! Best authentic food that we are lucky to have here in Bellingham. And if you're up for a special occasion ,the mochi, like everything else, is made from scratch in house and super yummy. So to be honest I've only tried about 4 of the meals they offer here but they are delicious! Once for dine in and once for takeout. The dine in experience was fine. The food did take a while to come out and they came out with the wrong order about 2 times but they were busy and honestly she was very sweet and apologetic, in the end it didn't really bother me. For my takeout experience they were very kind at the register. The black takeout "garbage bags" as someone else on their review mentioned are just black bags, doesn't seem like a big deal. Food inside was as delicious as dine in experience! I'd definitely recommend this place! As a vegetarian Korean food is always vegetarian friendly with the core dish being Kimchi, fermented cabbage, and the soft tofu kimchi stew did not disappoint! The stew came boiling hot which is perfect for cooking the egg that was in my stew. The spice level is adjusted for the local population I noticed, I am used to spicer levels but it was still delicious. Highly recommend this to all vegetarians. read more

I moved here from Atlanta a couple of months ago and grew up in a heavily Korean influenced community. This place felt like home. It's good home cook Korean food with restaurant quality. I got the Stone bowl bimbimbap with beef and egg. Pro tip:wait until the piping hot bowl is done sizzling. You'll be rewarded with crispy rice that adds a nice texture. What I also loved, it was a really good rice:vegetable:meat ratio. This is what I want after a fall mountain bike ride. Or just everyday. My partner got the mixed tofu soup. It's more of a 3.5 for Bellingham, especially knowing that this is apparently the only Korean restaurant in Bellingham? Pros: - extensive menu with some niche items like cold noodles - saw a Korean umma in the kitchen so that's always reassuring Cons: - The place offers only 4 banchans, which is a bit limited in my opinion. The banchans are also served in one plate that's divided in 4 sections vs. 4 different small plates. It's not a huge issue until I wanted to add some kimchi juice to my soulongtang. I was afraid of pouring everything accidentally. Banchan portion is smaller than what I'm used to. I didn't ask for refills, so not sure if that's available. - kinda overpriced. $17 for Korean ramen :/ but hey when you're the ONLY one you should definitely charge more haha - I can see some compromises were made to accommodate the *majority's* palette. It's unfortunate but I totally understand why. Soulongtang came pre-seasoned. There weren't as much green onions. And some mushrooms were added. Waiter didn't offer salt/pepper when the soup was brought to me, but I asked for additional black pepper eventually. Meat were all shredded beef too. Soulongtang is one of those things that gets misunderstood easily by people who aren't familiar with it, but I'm not sure if this "course correction" is ultimately necessary. It never hurts to do it the right way, and explain the right way to consume it when it's served. Imagine having soulongtang for the first time here, assuming this is the norm, and then visiting a different korean restaurant where it isn't seasoned... I might be overthinking. read more

12:30 on a Friday, and the place is empty...walk-away. It did not smell like Korean food deliciousness whatsoever. Side-dishes were tasting straight from the refrigerator and made who knows when? Kimchi: dry, color and flavorless; obviously from a jar and not hand-made. The bone broth soup was foamy, because it was just a MSG flavor packet dumped into boiling water and served in a plastic bowl...not a traditional hot-pot freshly made. Crumbly, dehydrated bits, and not steamy hot...was the steamed rice. Imagine juicing the taste buds for a go at some authentic Bibimbap, and it could only be half eaten; it was just that bad; that feeling...Oh, and it was $21 for lunch. I am not knowledgeable about Korean food, but I do enjoy all types of ethnic foods. One day, I was passing this restaurant, it was lunchtime and I was hungry so I stopped in. I randomly ordered Chicken Bulgogi. I had never heard of this dish and really had no idea what to expect. When it was served, I was pleasantly surprised. The waiter brought out a very hot sizzling iron dish heaped with chicken breast strips in a thick brown gravy/sauce. It was accompanied by a bowl of brown rice and four small side "relish" dishes. I devoured it. It was spicy, fresh and very tasty. I still have no idea what was in the sauce. What I do know is that I have been there for lunch one day a week for the last three weeks and ordered the same mystery dish. The restaurant is rather spartan, but the employees all wear masks and are very friendly, polite and efficient. I cant wait until next week. Yelp really needs to add ratings for service separately from food. The food is solidly 3 stars. The service was closer to 1. First the good: Kimchi pajeon, manduguk, japjae, and jalapeno poppers. SO good. The manduguk was really peppery - the first time I've had it like that, but the pajeon was SO good. The banchan was tasty too, albeint REALLY small portions of those. The japjae and pajeon are big enough that I took them home and ate them for breakfast the next morning. Definitely recommend. Now the bad and the ugly: While I was seated quickly and brought water and tea right away, that's where the good service ended. No drink order taken (or offered), they forgot to put in a dish, couldn't make stuff on the menu because the owner wasn't there, and we had to ask for a) utensils, b) plates, c) water/tea refills, d) if they had sake, and I had to get up and order it at the register. It took forever, too, so I wasn't going to try to ask for banchan refill - besides, Kimchi is on the menu and it's $5. It was just two young guys and they obviously didn't take the job that seriously....I wonder if it's different when the owner is there, but honestly, it sort of ruined the meal. The other thing that grinds my gears is when the check is dropped without any confirmation that you're done and you don't want anything else. The japjae was brought out late (the dish that was forgotten) and mid way into eating it, the check was dropped. It's great to have a Korean restaurant in Bellingham, but I'll limit it to takeout and I will buy my own jar of kimchi. read more
