We woke up on a Saturday morning to notice our dog was behaving oddly. His whole body looked swollen and he was very lethargic. Our typical vet wasn't open, so I called around to find one that was open. Best Friends was able to get us in fairly quickly. Our little buddy had been bitten by another dog and had a small scab on his shoulder. Though it didn't appear to be infected or have and access, the vet took his temperature and told us she believed it as infected and causing him to feel unwell. She prescribed an antibiotic and a pain med. 24 hours later, our dog was back to being his old self. I'm grateful that they made the time to assist us and that our dog didn't have to feel crummy and deal with an infection all weekend. The office staff, vet tech, and veterinarian were also very professional and kind. read more

We have used Best Friends since 1992 when our family got our first pet here on the island. We have always received excellent care and have appreciated Dr. Anderson's holistic care. Dr. Siring has treated our animals too. The Vet Techs are always so nice and loving with our babies. I have recommended this clinic to many of our friends. i had a 14 year old cat with kidney failure and arthritis that was diagnosed at the pet emergency center (in mount vernon) last year. in the two times i've dealt with dr anderson it felt like a money grab for him. i showed up with a very simple goal, get my cat back on gabapentin to keep him out of pain as his health got worse. i explicitly mentioned i was a low-income student and had already made the decision that since 1) he was 14, and 2) kidney failure is terminal no matter what course of action i chose, i would not drop an absurd amount of money on, or go into debt over, a treatment that wouldn't cure him. i felt like my request was entirely ignored at my office visit. first he suggested to try solensia, then fluid injections, then prescription food, then he pressed for more tests to diagnose diabetic neuropathy (despite the ER vet running a full panel just a couple months before with no evidence that was the case). my cat was scared the whole time (he was terrified of men) and hunkered down in the corner of the room, trying to get back into his crate. dr anderson was convinced that his crouching down was a sign of neuropathy, despite my endless supply of images to show how upright his posture typically was. he laughed when i attributed his posture to his fear, as if i couldn't read the behavior of the cat i've owned for nearly 15 years. it took three more calls after that vet visit to actually get the prescription, because dr anderson didn't seem to listen to my very clear request in-office and was very set on his recommendations. it took an additional three weeks to get my cat's pain medication because of whatever confusion dr anderson had on his end. my cat died a month after the prescription arrived. i knew it was coming which is why i requested pain medication, and the delay did nothing but keep him in pain for a solid chunk of his last couple months. i'm obviously a bit upset in the moment because my cat just passed away, but i do feel like dr anderson completely ignored my concerns in office and i would never take my other cats there knowing the way he handled my sweet thomas in the last few months of his life. i know i'm in the minority here having a bad experience with him, so don't let this review "yuck your yum" by any means. i just felt that my feelings (as well as my cat's) were completely disregarded throughout the entirety of my visit. included in my review is a picture of my sweet thomas who i miss very dearly read more

Absolutely outrageous behavior by one of their docs. Spent less than 15 seconds outside the clinic at the car and slammed the door shut announcing my dog was aggressive. She is a large dog; I can only assume this doc is afraid of large dogs. She was refusing to get out of the car because she had seen dogs going in and out of the clinic. I had told them she was not good with other dogs and yet they let my husband sit in the parking lot for 35 minutes with dogs coming and going in the clinic. I should have trusted the reviews I had read when I first moved to Oak Harbor regarding this clinic. If your dog is in pain, or is large, do NOT go here. Dr. String is the best! She recently removed a sarcoma from our Buddy - a very difficult surgery to remove the cancer and obtain clear margins but she did it! We have owned many cats and dogs over the last 40 years and she is the best veterinarian we have ever had. Eleven year old Buddy doesn't warm up to many, but he has a special bond with Dr. Syring. She has also performed other surgeries on Buddy and as well as our 13 year old Molly, all with great results. read more

It took me a bit to write this review. I think in this type of industry, it's very easy to upset an animal owner, because they don't get the answers they are looking for. It's also not my intent to hurt a business that I feel exists to provide a good in the world. That being said... I am very new to Oak Harbor (about a month) and have yet to see a vet since moving there. I saw reviews on Best Friend's that looked promising and I drive by them everyday... so by the looks of their facility, they've got it going on. One evening I got home from work (I work in Mount Vernon) walk into the house and see my dog literally dying. The right side of her head was twice the size of the left, her eye had popped almost completely out of her socket, she could barely breath and was drooling blood everywhere. I grabbed her, threw her in my truck and drove straight to the only place I knew. I carried her into the lobby and the receptionist looked shocked and I just yelled, "She's dying!" The receptionist told me to wait a moment so she could get a room prepped for me. There was a lady in the lobby waiting with another dog (I'm guessing the last appointment for the evening). The receptionist then came out and said, "I'm sorry, the doctor said she doesn't have time to see her, and suggested you drive her to the urgent care center". I said, "that's about 40min away, and she's not going to make it" The receptionist said sorry and offered to get the door for me. As a pet owner, if I was the lady in the lobby waiting for an appoint with a dog that I would say wasn't dying at that exact moment, I would not have been upset if the receptionist told me I needed to wait due to an emergency. I ended up driving all the way to the Urgent Care center. Along the way my dogs body went limp and lifeless. While driving I was frantically looking for vital signs, and thankfully I was able to feel she was alive. Luckily I made it in time and I can report a happy ending, but to turn away a dog in this condition because you didn't have time?! Why did you become a vet in the first place? read more

This is very difficult to slam a local veterinarian bc few are available on island but ppl need to know how this Facility is doing Business. Had a 2 yr old female mix with obvious spinal issues and I explained that the owner was a deployed service member and needed to be contacted as the exam was happening? Which the receptionist took without urgency, scheduled it 21 days out.... Begged, numerous times the next day to please, talk to the vet in order to get this dog in asap bc she was going downhill fast... Dragging her back legs and couldn't even lift her hind end at all. I'm certain that a client/patient would be willing to be bumped in order to have a more serious issue be seen. Was told 1 thing, and the owner was told another and in the end? I had to take the animal to an off island Emergency pet care center only to have her euthanized.... This is 2nd Time in 8mos I've had to sit with a dog as it's passing away bc local Vets refuse to adjust to covid staffing issues... Or so im told.. 2 years now, and none of these business seem to have made the accommodations and telling ppl to drive off island for emergencies. Whats worse?? Is I don't believe for 1 minute that the receptionist ever spoke to the Dr for that day... Far too much authority is being to these young, receptionist who in all likelihood won't work at that job for longer than a year? When I asked to speak to a manager? I was given an Email to an off site "Office Manager" working remotely,,, from Oregon..... No response from that "Remote Manager" and its been 2 days now.. Who does business like this?? If I could leave Negative 5 stars?? You'd get it Best Friends.... Thank god customers can share their experiences online today bc about 15 years ago I had another issue with this same vet regarding a payment they wouldn't accept from a Clients gf while that sailor was also deployed... Then they also held her dog an extra 2 days..... This place needs and deserves to be sanctioned in some manner.. And if you don't think 3 sailors whom I have/had thier Dogs ARENT talking about what just occured??? Think again... Almost killed my dog. They gave her a near lethal overdose of anesthesia. Then they called hours after they were suppose to and told me my dog might not make it, she was only there for a simple spay surgery.I got over here and she was lying in a kennel unresponsive, and no one helping her. I got her out of there, stayed with her, and gave her water until she recovered. The people here either don't care or have no training at all, maybe both. The doctor identified what was wrong and took care of my little one. She did an EXCELLENT job explaining what had been performed. I came all the way from Port Townsend and it was worth the trip. This review is purely for grooming. They got me in day-of for a nail grind, which is why this review isn't one star. My dogs nails were scratching me bad even though they weren't very long, so I wanted them rounded off. She took him back and when he returned she said there wast much to trim on the front but she did the back. I said I was aware of the short length but the edges were sharp. I picked up his paw and they are even sharper, and cut so hastily that they are now splitting. I said I thought she was gonna grind them, she said the person who uses the grinder isn't there today. When she could see I was upset (because I could've done what she did at home) she did try to take him back from me mumbling that she could try using the grinder, and I told her no. My dog was unusually upset when he returned and I wasn't going to make him go back in twice in a row. She wasn't happy. Cherry on the cake? EIGHTEEN DOLLAR CHARGE. Won't be back. read more

I'm really happy that my kitty was able to receive such excellent care considering Oak Harbor has so little to offer! Some veterinarians like to over-sell/over-diagnose, but this hospital has a staff that truly cares and wants what's best for your pet. So long, Banfield! I have stopped going here. Our dog and cat have been regular patients here for years, but we will no longer take them here. Best Friend's overcharges for everything, and they refuse to do a simple procedure unless you do a full blood screening and all sorts of other procedures. The past two years it has been getting worse and worse. When they present their price estimates, they explain everything as if your pet will die if you don't do what they want. I took our dog to another vet for a simple procedure after BF gave us their quote, and there was a $1200 DIFFERENCE. Yes, Best Friend's wanted to charge $1200 MORE than another local vet. Visiting my family for the holidays in Oak Harbor. Wanted to get our dog groomed before we flew out. We made an appointment to get her shampooed and brushed. My husband went in and he was told she needed three more shots totaling $200. This is outrageous because we just took our dog to a vet in Oak Harbor four days ago and she received all necessary shots and exams for the plane ride to Virginia and any shots needed to fly out of the country to Europe. This past week our beloved little 15 year old Shih Tzu took a turn for the worse. On Saturday morning we made a family decision that it would be in his best interest to have him put to sleep. Over his 15 years his main veterinarian was on the base except the few times he needed more specialized treatment. Best Friends was the first one open on Saturday so we called them to inquire about having it done. Since we had never had to put a pet down we were unsure what to expect. The staff at Best Friends made the process as easy for us as possible considering we were losing part of the family. We were told that we could spend as much time in the room both prior and after the procedure. The staff was great offering comfort to the two of us. We had our little friend cremated and received his remains on Monday evening. We were very surprised when we came home on Tuesday after work and there was a bouquet of flowers and a condolences card from the staff at Best Friends. If you are looking for a veternarian for your family friend that cares I would highly recommend Best Friends for any of your furry friends needs. read more

I have been meaning to leave this review for a while. We had family in town for the holidays. We wanted to get our dog up to date on shots and groomed. My wife made the appointment and I took our dog in. They spent a good portion of the visit trying to upsale me. When I refused they made up that my dog had anxiety and wouldn't groom him unless I purchased their pills. When I finally agreed and paid they said that they couldn't groom him that day and set another appointment for a couple of days. When I brought him back I didn't give him the anxiety meds because he didn't need them. The groomer told me he was just fine except he had a fear of heights. He is a small dog so that made sense. I have many complaints about this veterinary office, but my biggest are the price, incompetence, and lack of communication. The short story- I paid $70 on a Wednesday to see a vet for my dog's vomiting simply to be told to continue what I already had been doing (that's right, it's $70 just to see a vet). Saturday evening, her vomiting turned into diarrhea. First thing Monday morning I called updating the office on her condition. The vet on staff that day ordered a fecal lab and I promptly brought a sample in. The next day I still had not heard anything, so I called and was told, "It looks great, everything came back negative. Do you have any questions?" I informed the office my dog still had untreated diarrhea. A note was left for a vet to get back to me... the next day. At this point, I took my dog elsewhere. I paid $140 over 5 days and received absolutely no treatment or medication for my dog. The staff poorly communicates among one another and your contact with a vet is minimal, resulting in slow and misinterpreted communications. Save your money and time by driving to a veterinary clinic in Coupeville or Anacortes that will actually treat your pet. read more

Our lives took a turn on 06/23/2018 when we had to put our buddy Abner down. It was an easy decision due to his pain level. I don't take pet death easily, but my husband stayed with him and the vet till the end. We could not afford cremation and the thought of my Abner being put in the trash killed me. But I learned that Bob buries those who are not cremated with dignity and respect. I've met Bob through family and I was so warmed and happy to know Anbers last human touch was from Bob. It would be one thing just to be overpriced, but we've ran into them giving us bad information on multiple accounts, misdiagnosing issues, increasing the fees due for a visit while we were there without providing any extra services, giving antibiotics that were not the correct ones because they "thought they would work", putting our pets on additional medications and later telling us those were the wrong ones after we spent $100+ on them and that there are more we can try for $100+. After all of this, they recommended getting a culture done for our cat in addition to the normal exam (again with fees) that came back with "no results" but WITH a recommendation to try more antibiotics. So being overpriced is one thing, but paying almost $700 for a problem that is still not resolved on our cat that went from being rescued off the street, to going wrongly diagnosed by this vet, to having a continual infection that still isn't resolved is just ridiculous. If you don't care about the loss of money, hopefully you'd care about you pet. Please take this advice and make the treck to any of the other vets you can find on or off this island. read more

So I had to make the toughest decision on Dec 8, 2015. My sweet girl Bella of 16 years had gone from a very healthy pup to a very sick pup within a few weeks. On that day she let me know she was so tired and the pain was too much so I called Best Friends Vet about 10:30 am on Tuesday December 8th and they told to me to come right in, I was there 11:00, they were so kind and sweet with my girl!!! Dr Anderson took his time Bella and me, was so kind and understanding of the pain that her and I both were in......the next day I received a sweet bouquet of flowers for me to express there sympathy, two days later I received a hand written note from Dr Anderson himself expressing his sympathy!!!! I was very grateful for their bathing and grooming service for my fur baby Jupiter. He is very energetic and when he first meets people, he can be a handful but he was so fresh and so clean when I picked him up - and most important, a happy camper! His fur is so soft as it was when he was a younger pup. They brushed his teeth and gave him paw care as well. I made mention of how I wanted to put him through agility training, and the groomer was so helpful in inquiring one that was nearby. She also printed out information for me to take.
