Drive down this small road to find it on the end sitting on the Rancocas Creek, the location / appearance gave it more if a Seafood Joint. Building was pretty beat up, Sign falling off the wall. Called ahead and was told it's suggested to Reservations which is no big but when we got there there was not a soul in the place besides the workers. Decided to sit outside since it was nice out. Ordered the German Mac & Cheese(spaetzle) and Perogis for the table. Mac has nice texture but was very bland. Perogis were tasty but soggy as they were drenched in oil/butter. For the main course everyone got the best of the wurst platter. 5 sausages with more spaetzle sauerkraut and spicy mustard. The sausage had no flavor and I was disappointed to find out they buy then and don't make them in house. Desert offerings were carrot cake, cheese cake or tiramisu so we passed The service was Excellent. Very hands on and friendly. Also place is a BYOB which is nice / Cash only Too In looking at reviews and photos from the past everything prior to us committing to go looked fantastic from the building conditions to the food to the environment so not exactly sure what the story is. I went to their website, and I'm expecting the restaurant to be austere, formal, dark... Decorated with a lot of wood and beer steins. Probably in a converted 1900s house with green trim. So I was completely surprised when the GPS took us through a compact, residential area and abruptly announced a turn onto a small gravel road leading to a marina. Right on the water is a two story building right out of the movies (a more worn version of Dukes bar from "Haven"), and inside were greeted by an alligator assuring us this is a German restaurant. I saw absolutely none of this coming. The interior doesn't seem to have AC, but luckily they have beautiful seating on the back deck. It's a gorgeous view of the water looking at a hiking trail on the other side. There are Christmas lights overhead, with flowers wrapped around the deck railing. One happy group was engaged in a karaoke performance. I apparently know nothing of Germans and austerity. The menu was smaller than what was online, but they had specials as well. The Dusseldorf Chop was delicious - the eggs were well cooked, as was the pork. The spaetzle was just fun to eat. For the uniqueness of the site and the amazingness of the food (not to mention the great name), there's no way not to give this place five stars! read more

I've been wanting to try Best of the Wurst for awhile now and happy that I finally got there. My cousin and I went on a Friday, had checked a menu out online and saw also it was BYOB. Very homey feel, no fancy fuss here, long shared tables and right on the water. A few jet skis went by during dinner. Very friendly service. Menu online and in person menu didn't perfectly match up but that was OK, basically same stuffs. Homemade pierogies. Tasty but honestly didn't seem that they were made in house.. which is fine but you know what I mean. I got the pork schnitzel. Huge piece, could have used a little more salt on it. Red cabbage was a nice side dish to balance the schnitzel. The spaetzle was bland. My cousin got the golabki and said it was OK, but too salty. The server talked us into dessert, I think she called it a honey bee cake? It had fresh whipped cream, honey soaked in the cake and with almond, it was absolutely delicious and not overly sweet. We have been to this place several times before and really enjoyed the delicious food and relaxed atmosphere. We decided to go last night (a Wednesday night which happened to be schnitzel night unbeknownst to us). We were rudely greeted by the miserable lady at the cash register saying "Do you have a reservation?!" We said no and she said "well you have to! It's schnitzel night!! You have to wait 30 minutes". We stood awkwardly waiting for her to maybe take our name, but instead she huffed and puffed muttering to herself, extremely angry with us. Another group also didn't have a reservation and stood by us. The cook left the kitchen to turn the sign to "closed" on the door" at 6:30pm. My husband walked in right after that (he parked the car) and thought it was a mistake so flipped it around and the cook came out and yelled at him saying "I turned it to closed!!" The miserable lady then said to the cook "they don't even have reservations!" He said "tell them to leave!" We left and will NEVER be back again. It's one thing to say "I'm sorry but we are overbooked and won't be able to seat you tonight" It's another thing to treat people like that. We waited by the patio for my husband to grab the car ( it was raining) and my daughters and I spoke about the unbelievable experience and the cook heard through the screen door. He came to the door and said to please come back another time but call and ask for Will, he will comp our dinners. We just nodded and walked away. They lost our business for sure!! We only discovered it while looking at Google Maps for something else and decided to swing by just to have a look. Having recently eaten, we only did a small takeout order of pierogis, which we found to be pretty good. As we waited for our order, we noticed a six foot cutout of Donald Trump positioned in the dining room (eye roll), as well as some other political messages ("Impeach Murphy" written on a mask). Not many German restaurants in SJ so that makes this place extra special. It's off the beaten path next to a marina - a place that would be hard to find without social media (one of SM few redeeming qualities). The food is authentic and tasty - prepared by the owner/chef who knows what he is doing. I recommend the wienerschnitzel, sausages, and spatzel. The outdoor seating on the river is relaxing and provides a nice backdrop for the delicious meal. And then there is the sauerkraut - it is so good, I could eat it all by itself. The service was slow even though it was just us and another table, the food was ok for the price but what put me off the worst was the clients just kinda hanging out and talking to the workers/owners about bigoted and racist crap and the mold in their sausage display case! Such a hard review to write. The food is wonderful but we didn't have the best experience. We went early because the kids were starving after a long day out and about. Decided to do an early dinner to avoid the crowds. Arrived at 2 pm and were told that the waitress was alone so even thought there were only 2 tables occupied we needed to sit out on the deck and wait for a table. After waiting 10-15 mins we were seated. Took forever for drinks to arrive. The waitress was new and alone and super sweet so we enjoyed the view and tried to take it as it came. When all the food arrived we were a bit disappointed that nothing was hot but everything did taste great. Would have been unbeatable if hot. We were stuffed and had a ton of leftovers so asked for to go boxes. They informed us that they just ran out but the owner went to go get some and would be back in 5 mins or we could use foil. These weren't the type of meals that would be appetizing stuffed in foil so we decided to wait. And wait and wait. After 20 mins I was starting to get annoyed. We paid the bill and waited some more. Finally, boxes arrived and off we went. I will say it would have been nice to be offered some coffee or dessert while we waited and waited.
