Dylan was an AMAZING guide that knew not only an encyclopedia-like amount of knowledge on the history of Portland, but also could recite extensive history on each place we ate and the specifics of the food we were enjoying. Everything was delicious and we've already been back to one of the restaurants! The afternoon helped us all to understand the layout of Portland while not exhausting. Perfect amount of eating and walking and WOW did we learn. I started writing things down because I was afraid I'd forget things after we were done and I truly wanted to remember it all! It's a free museum that houses many artifacts related to aviation history tied to Pearson Field and Vancouver Barracks. Quite interestingly, the museum discusses the Spruce Mill (which is located quite literally on the ground you're standing on) which produced lumber for planes during WWI. It ran 24/7. There are lots of planes here on display, and also houses the first plane flown by Leah Hing. She's the first Chinese American woman to earn a pilot's license in the United States, and paved the way for aviation for future generations to come. There's also a small balcony area dedicated to the Chkalov transpolar flight. Three men flew sixty-three hours and sixteen minutes over the North Pole, from Moscow to Vancouver. The landing at Vancouver was unplanned as they were running out of fuel, but they had a warm welcome here. Overall, the museum was very informative and a great way to spend a few hours.

It's within the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and is home to Pearson Field, one of the oldest continuously operating airfields in the U.S (1905). Pearson Field is named after Lt. Alexander Pearson, an aviator who set airspeed records in the 1920s. During the interwar period, Pearson Field became a hub for innovative aviation, seeing visits from famous pilots like Charles Lindbergh. This is a must do! It's free and amazing.

We have been to other cities where the actual driver was the narrator for the tour. This ride had a recording voice. I prefer the driver narrating instead. But there were many good stops on the tour. Laura did point out things along the way. Our favorite stop was the Chinese Garden (Garden was beautiful) and the Waterfront stop. I wish we had more time in Portland to stop more places to explore! If you are interested in interior decor/architecture/history the self guided tour of the mansion is a must! The spaces were beautiful and I learned so much about Portland. The organization who runs the house has done an amazing job maintaining and displaying this magical home. The grounds are also incredible (and free, although parking is paid), and worth seeing just for the view. The gardens are maintained by UofO gardening students and they have done a great job. All together I think we spent about $60 to see the tour and the gardens and it was well worth it. The staff was knowledgeable and loved talking about the homes and the residents! I also appreciate the tour being self guided so we could go at our pace.

When we began the tour, in the Deschutes Brewery Restaurant, Theresa filled us with Beer 101 knowledge and even one of the Deschutes Brewmasters came out for a Q & A session. He answered all questions, no matter how mundane or stupid they may have been. While we were walking to our next destination, Theresa filled our time with PDX Historical facts, that most people may know or not and by the time we reached our final destination, Rogue Brewery, everyone was already feeling jolly & talking loud, she patiently let all parties be themselves and enjoy the moment. This walking tour takes you to three (3) Brewery Restaurant Pubs, 1) Deschutes Brewery 2) Pints Brewing and 3) Rogue Brewing.
