Wow, I am not sure about past reviews that are so bad, but I stayed here on 1/20/24 and was very pleased, so if the hotel can keep up the good experienceI that I had, they would be doing awesome. I was pleasantly surprised to see the nice little lobby -- still decorated with several Christmas trees, which looked pretty and cozy. Lobby has a little seating area and fireplace. My queen room had great space, probabably for two beds but we just had/needed 1. Very clean bathroom. Had a back door in our room, which I had to make sure whas shut /lcoked. btu this was great because I was travelign with my dog, so potty breaks were super easy (especially in hte 5* 5* weather!) and it looked out to a lake. Nice hot breakfast and seating area. I'm not a huge breakfast person, but there was hot coffee & tea, milk juice, hot scambled eggs, bacon & biscuits and gracy, plus juice and some cold options. Basic, but clean, affordable, beautifully decorated for Christmas with a large pool, breakfast, quiet, dog friendly, laundry, mini fridge, mw and small gym. We're visiting friends in Monticello and wanted to bring our dog. Best western gateway in Monticello checked all the boxes. Our beds were comfortable, the shower was strong, had a hairdryer and lotion, shampoo, conditioner. Big tv in rooms, Ike 200 channels on tv and breakfast had hard boiled eggs, Activia yogurts, basic pastries, waffles, biscuits & gravy. I only had coffee. They let us use AARP discount for 4 rooms eventhough only 1 room had over 65 ppl. I'm guessing it's because all the rooms were on our card. We didn't use pool but it looked cleaned and was much bigger than normal hotel pools. The a gas station next door and restaurant. Would definitely recommend. There was a little rust on the bathroom light but everything else in good shape! read more

Not a lot of options around this area, but still...it should be nicer and it isn't. The floors are dirty in the room and the lobby. The breakfast is abysmal and non-existent including the coffee maker being broken so they just have a bad Keurig. The shower water is cold and the pool heater is broken so it's cold too. The WIFI is terrible too and drops constantly. read more

We stay here every year for the state tournament and they are very hospitable and very accommodating. It's close to the interstate so easy in and out and don't have to deal with downtown. High recommend staying here if you're anywhere in the area read more

I'm a 71 year old who recently shattered my right upper arm and 5 weeks later, broke my right hip. My family/extended family and I were in Monticello for a daughter's wedding. Menisha, the owner and manager of the Monticello Gateway Inn Best Western was immediately empathetic and accommodating. She made sure that my family and I were roomed early and near each other. The rooms were neat, the toilet high enough that I didn't need an additional riser, the tub side low enough to get into, with a shower chair included. Other family members enjoyed the pool and breakfast poolside. Friends and family gathered in the evenings in the area just off of the main lobby where there is a couch, 2 upholstered chairs and additional chairs from the breakfast room. Throughout our stay, we were met with kindness. We all highly recommend staying at this hotel. read more

Looks nicer on the outside than inside. Walked in on Friday night to the gentleman in the check in desk arguing with someone on the phone. Didn't think much of it since I don't know the situation. I dismissed that scenario. What I can't dismiss is the freaking room! Stepping foot into a damn mess. First it smelled like dirty wet clothes? That's the closest smell I can describe it as. Secondly we turned the heater on bc the room was cold, and it smelled awful..and I'm not talking about that heater smell, no it's dirty old mold, I've smelt that before. Never will forget it. Lastly, BUGS. Not bed bugs, at least I hope not. Saw some weird flying beetle kind of bugs, and a ton of yellow/orange lady bugs. My husband killed like 10 of them that same night. Ask me if I slept at all? I felt them everywhere. How can anyone sleep with bugs? Next day we went downstairs for the complimentary "breakfast". Went around 8:30am. 1 breakfast burrito and cereal. Not to be picky, but like is that all? There were people that went in and right out like we did. Super disappointing. I should've and regret not saying anything to management during our stay. Figured a Yelp would catch their attention. Will never stay there again! read more

Forget the online booking I just spent almost an hour trying to get the room I booked a month ago. The girl at the desk did not have a clue on how to handle the problem of my booking not showing up in the reservation system. My room has an odor not sure what it is. We stayed for a night during a visit to Champaign for an Illini game. The hotel is very clean, with updated decor and bedding. The pool is large and looks nice but we didn't swim. The breakfast is large and exceeded my expectations. They have non-dairy milk options as well as gluten free foods. The coffee was really yummy and everything was well stocked and fresh. I'm surprised this hotel has lower reviews. I was pleasantly surprised and would stay here again when we visit U of I. I should also add, we traveled with children and my 1yo was able to use a pack n play they have available and my son slept on a pull out sofa. We had a very comfy sleep. There is a train museum and Allerton park close by which are nice options for a family. read more

We recently had a Wedding in the area, and The Best Western Monticello Gateway Inn went above and beyond to accommodate our guests!!! Kim and her Mom , Rhonda, worked tirelessly to make sure that every guest was taken care of!! They took pride in offering the guests a comfortable room and all of the extras that they provided!! Zero regard for safety and takes zero responsibility for overbooking in the middle of the night. My husband had to drive 2 hours out of his way for this reservation with our 2 small children. They turned us away at 1:45am and offered no solution. I called to talk with a manger and Ashley put us on hold for 25 minutes. I called back and she hung up on me, twice. read more

I would give this place less than zero if I could. The price was exorbitant and staying in my vehicle would have been nicer. The shower didn't work unless the water temp was on cold. My queen size bed was actually a full size which is hard for 2 adults to sleep comfortably on. There were no shampoos or soaps whatsoever and when we asked at the front desk the guy thought it was weird since there should be dispensers in the shower.. the indoor pool was freezing cold and the place is filthy. BEDBUGS. Guy at the front desk didn't even pretend to be surprised when we found our (hundreds) of new roommates. Offered another room. Another room had a zipper cover on the mattress--a telltale sign that the bedbug infestation is extensive and not limited to one room. We opted to leave immediately rather than risk bringing an infestation into our home. Also, for good measure, when I got to my room, there was a giant poop smear on the SEAT of the toilet. They were partway through some painting work, so their handyman had done a coat of paint on the trim and left for the weekend, with painter's tape left up. Door lock did not function correctly and had to be pulled/slammed to catch. Doors between adjoining rooms left wide open rather than locked. Literally everything about this place was completely disgusting. read more

We had a room block for our wedding. Things were very unorganized and the communication was not the best. Calls/texts would not be returned so I would have to show up in person in order to get things accomplished and/or check on things. I was told a rate for my guests and they were charged differently - as well as for my husband and I. I highly recommend having ALL communication in writing. It was also difficult as people were not receiving email confirmations/returned calls so they didn't know if they even had a room. read more

I love to stay here! I come once a year for a small knitting gathering. The lady who owns the hotel goes above and beyond to make our stay fantastic. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfy. The breakfast is nice and the deck outside is so relaxing. read more

I've stayed here multiple times and have been extremely satisfied each time. The rooms are very clean and the beds are comfortable. The staff here has been very friendly and helpful every time I have stayed here. The BW offers a very clean and spacious swimming pool that would be perfect for large groups. It sits in a nice quiet area in Monticello, just off the highway and about 15 minutes from Champaign. I highly recommend staying here. read more

Upon arrival I was assigned a room - I opened the door and someone was painting the closet door! (They appear to be in the middle of a renovation) No problem, I say and go back to the desk to let them know. He says that this is the last room in the hotel and he doesn't know what to do. While he is figuring it out, I and googling other possibilities. He returns and gives me another room - the jacuzzi suite. Cool, I think! I check my e-mail, decide on a place to eat and hear something outside my door. Someone else has a key to my room and they are trying to get in! They apologise and work something out, I guess, but for my entire 3 night stay, I wonder how many other people have a key to my room and if my belongings are safe. Room is clean, bathroom is sparse, and AC is temperamental. I will not return. read more

What a rip off will NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN and I had picked them over many other choices for the money why does this place never have enough or fitted carpeting? Piant peeling or new. Possibly if the staff were not outside smoking all the time things would be different A 2 day stay means no maid service go to the front desk and get your own towels. I wish I would have read the reviews on this hotel earlier. I booked this hotel about 2 months out from arrival and called a few days before hand to make sure we had the room still and they gave me the thumbs up. We arrived that Friday and we were told our room had been canceled do to a family emergency? I told them I did not call to cancel I called to confirm. They said the didn't know what to do and gave us the "private room" which was the older mangers room. I'm not sure if they were working on this room or what happened but it was a mess! The bed sheets were dirty with stains, the room was not finished, there were boxes everywhere, construction was being done inside obviously, the towels had stains on them, the toilet paper was on the floor when we came into the room. It was just a really bad experience. The kid who was working that night wasn't sure what to do and he said to call and speak to the manager the next morning. I was running a marathon the next day and didn't want to deal with manager and let him know I would call Monday morning. They said that was fine.. It's been two weeks and she will not return my call and I've had to escalate this to the corporate complaint office (who will only give me a $30.00 visa card to stay at another Best Western) They couldn't refund me the money, the only way I could get a refund is if I spoke to the manager.. who won't return my call. This hotel is poorly managed. This was the first time I have stayed at a Best Western and It will be my last. read more

I was forced to reside in this hell hole for a month while working in the area and I wouldn't wish that experience on my worst enemies. When I first received my room, I tried to turn on the lights but found that only two of the four lamps in the room actually worked and also that they had not provided any toiletries whatsoever. I walked to the front desk to collect the missing items because no one answered my phone call and, upon returning, I discovered that there was no internet or television service. It was later explained to me that this was commonplace and that I'd have to deal with it. The complimentary breakfast was absolutely pitiful. Every morning they would put out four bagels, six muffins, five apples and five oranges, and expect that to feed every guest in the hotel. The pool was disgustingly cloudy and the hot tub was an empty uncovered pit filled with mold just waiting for someone to take a wrong step and fall in. The icing on the cake was the fact that they wouldn't service your room for days at a time and my room didn't even have a PLEASE SERVICE sign to hang on the door knob. After they finally did send a maid, I was horrified to discover that all of my drawers and suitcase been looked through. When I brought this to the attention of the management, I was basically blown off and received a very shallow apology. Luckily nothing was missing since I hadn't left anything expensive behind but the complete disregard of my privacy had me completely irate. You have been warned. read more

DISGUSTING!! We were "upgraded" to the "manager suite" because they state they were overbooked. As we walked down the hall toward the room there was a terrible odor that only got stronger as we approached the "suite" door. We found the door to be open and realized the horrible odor was actually coming from our room! We stepped into the room, the carpet was filthy and stained, there were bed frame boxes piled up in the second bedroom, and the horrible smell was dead MICE! We complained of course and were moved to a different room. The second room was better in the sense no dead mice stink, but the TV didn't work, the floor sloped to one side, there was 1 towel in the bathroom and it was dingy and thin. We would have looked for a different hotel altogether but the U of IL was celebrating Mom's Weekend and all hotels in Champaign and surrounding area were full. Staying at this hotel was the single worst hotel experience I have ever encountered. This was definitely not even close to being worth $188! read more

TOTALL UNSATISFIED. Firstly I called weeks ahead of time to reserve my room on the bottom floor. I was told both the room would be ready as renovations would be done. I love claimed I really needed the lower floor for my mother who has a hard time with stairs and it would be helpful to get outside so she could smoke. When we showed up they were not done with renovations and they had given away the last first floor room. I told the concierge I asked to have that told to me since my mother is elderly they basically gave me a tough luck speech. If that wasn't enough, then the tv and cable did not work. If not for a terrific converge named Brandon I would have left on the spot. The next day the breakfast they claimed to have was gone and non existent. Brandon was again good enough to get some things together and salvage what was almost a horrific stay. It wasn't till days later I noticed a $500 charge on my bill for smoking. For one they know we did not smoke in the room as they saw us leave each time with our dogs to smoke. How they could fathom charging anything after having one of the worst stays I have ever had even as a Veteran who has served. To put this frank and quick this place is the drizzling poops and should find new management. read more
