He frequently brought up politics, demographics, and "statistics" at work in ways that felt inappropriate and often came across as biased. It wasn't the kind of environment I expected from a workplace. I personally chose not to engage with these conversations because I was there to work, and I try to keep my personal beliefs separate from my workplace. However, being repeatedly exposed to these types of comments from management made the environment feel unprofessional. I also noticed that he would tell us certain employees had quit, but after speaking with those employees, I learned that was not always what happened. This made me feel like there was a lack of honesty and transparency in how situations were handled. One comment that really stuck with me was when he told me and another young female employee that we'd be prettier if we spoke more intelligently and that men would like us more. We are both very young girls, and that comment was incredibly inappropriate and made us uncomfortable. I was also told that if I came in early every day, I would receive a $1 raise. I did exactly that, and I received the raise on my final paycheck. Just a few days later, I was fired. It was confusing to be recognized with a raise and then immediately let go without being given a meaningful explanation. I was told I was being fired because I supposedly had an attitude with a customer. When I asked what had happened, I wasn't given a clear explanation and was simply told they had decided not to continue my employment. I work hard, take my jobs seriously, and I rarely leave negative reviews because I know everyone is trying their best. I didn't contact them afterward because I felt I had already been treated disrespectfully. After the way I was spoken to and the lack of honest communication, I didn't feel another conversation would have changed anything. As a customer, I also found the food to be average, especially for the price. Before I even worked here, my mom and I had cheesecake from the café on a few different occasions, and every time it had a noticeable freezer-burn taste. For the prices they charge, I expected much better quality. Based on my experience as both an employee and a customer, I would encourage people to support another family-owned café instead.

They have good quality fabrics and especially good quality thread. They repair sewing machines, so when the old 1960s Kenmore machine I bought needed a cleaning and adjustment I brought it in. It was returned cleaned, oiled and with a new correct needle. I also purchased a set of needles for different things. I mostly just mend clothing, but I have a periodic older visitor who uses the machine for her quilting projects, so I wanted it to be in top shape. In addition they sell very high quality machines that are borderline commercial systems you can program to do all kinds of fancy projects. Service here is very friendly. They also have classes!

But today I took an actual class on machine embroidery and had a blast. I learned so much and learned how to do things correctly. Being self taught isn't always the best. My intention was to save up more money for a sewing only Babylock machine. But they had a trade in embroidery and sewing machine for the exact same price as the new machine. After some testing of the machine and negotiations with the husband the Adventura II came home with me. For the class I used a Babylock Aria that had ALL the bells and whistles. Thank you so much Thimbles! I will be back for more classes (and machines but don't tell my husband).

Betsy's teas are higher quality than what I could dream of affording from a place like Teavanna, and I can get more of it. Very helpful staff, not snobby, at all. Very interested in finding the right tea for you, not getting your wallet out. Furthermore, it is about 1/4 the drive compared to Orland or Oakbrook (driving from Joliet). read more

I take a crochet class at Betsy's Yarn & Tea Shop. I love this shop. The owner is patient and can teach anyone to crochet or knit. I'm hooked on tea because of the great samples that one can get while shopping or taking a class. It's the perfect place to find a unique gift too! read more

If you like spicey salsa, the Pineapple Mango Habanero Salsa is top notch. Not too spicey but a nice slow kick to it. I've yet to find anything better to this in other stores. read more

A pinky finger sticking out while slipping on the flavors of comfort. I booked this spot to bring my girlfriend from Antioch, IL. (Wisconsin) Although we talk on the phone, online and text, we haven't seen each other in person in a few years. I've always wanted to do high tea and thought that would be great for us to catch up, since we both enjoy tea. Imagine my surprise when I found a place on the south side and black owned!! I had her bypass the places downtown and come to the south side to experience this place. This place is everything I imagined it to be. The tea selection is great! The service and explanation about the tea is top notch. And our server was 19 years old telling us about the teas! (Thanks Kameryn!!) My only recommendation is to add a thin fresh lemon sliced in a circle and not a wedge. A wedge is too big. That would add to the daintiness. Although I reserved the tea room, the other side of the shop is just as beautiful. I will definitely be back to drink tea and chill on my own! To the owners, THANK YOU! Thank you for adding this place to the south side, so we don't have to go downtown for a superb experience. Thank you for providing a beautiful spot and excellent service!

However, when I was shopping, I was then followed by that same man for almost the whole time I was shopping. He would just stand there and move around to exactly where I went and it made it a very awkward time that I almost just wanted to leave. Then when he was gone, was being watched by 3 other employees, one of which seemed like she was gossiping about me or my partner. She would be staring at me or him and then turn around when we looked over. She also went to her coworker and whispered something and then very obviously the other coworker walked past us and looked directly at us almost laughing. I just felt very uncomfortable here which was very disappointing because it was a very awesome store.
