Best coffee I've had so far in Port Townsend! This was my 4th try this morning. 1) Room coffee really bad. 2) Lobby coffee bad but better than room's coffee maker. Restaurant where I had breakfast was OK. Did not take any of the refills offered as there had to something better. AFTER 3 bad drip coffees taken black, I ordered a delicious latte from Better Living Through Coffee. My vegan latte made with macadamia alternative milk was near nirvana. Plan to go again before I leave town. read more

This is more of a 4.4 star, very good, but can't quite round up to a 5. This cafe is located in a corner of a building with beautiful views of the water, both inside and on their little patio outside near the entrance. The line was long but moved fairly quickly. However, the shape of the cafe doesn't help to make a streamlined queue... it's crowded and a bit confusing as to who's standing to order and who's waiting to pick theirs up. Nonetheless, I was excited to see the options in their pastry case and on their menu. The bigger case had mostly a bunch of quiche and savory options, while a smaller one had sweets. I ordered the salmon quiche because I've never seen that anywhere else so hello, gotta try it! I also got the Arancia (basically an orange mocha) because I love the combination of chocolate and citrus. I appreciated that the worker communicated well and told us the quiche would take 10 minutes to warm up. My husband got an Ethiopian light roast pour over, which was cool to see being made on an apparatus that looked like it had space for about five pour overs at once. Opinions on what we got: Ethiopian Light Roast- Flavorful, just a bit lighter than others I've tried, and it didn't go sour with time. Very good! Arancia- Holy cow this was delicious and I would definitely get it again. Keep in mind, the orange peel was actually in my cup and I was surprised when all of a sudden I was chewing on something and pulled it out of my mouth! But it does say "orange peel" in the description on the menu, so I should've known. Salmon Quiche- A bit pricy but wonderful! The quiche itself was well seasoned, & the salmon was evenly distributed. My only complaint is that the crust was quite difficult to cut with a plastic knife. We were on their patio, so we had to go back inside to grab a metal butterknife (of course we returned it). Tamale Pie- Oh yeah! We left to walk around town then decided we were way too curious about a tamale pie in the case that we were eyeing earlier, so we returned to get that to go. Unfortunately, this was a big disappointment. First off, this was the same price as the salmon quiche but the quality seemed so much worse. It didn't taste good, was unevenly cooked (mostly dry), and the crust was hard as rock. I even put taco sauce on top from a pack we had in the car. It helped to make it taste a little better. Would never get this again, though. Overall, I really enjoyed Better Living Through Coffee and will be sure to return on my next visit to try other quiches and drinks. read more

This was disappointing. I need my morning coffee and Better Living was open. We swung in and there was a nice crowd already. The location is awesome, right on the water. We ordered and had our drinks pretty quick. This is when things went south. The coffees were not good. I can stomach a lot, but not this. All four of us threw our coffees away without finishing. This is the first time I have ever done that. I'm not sure how they all tasted so bad. Maybe the basic drip is better, but I won't be coming back to try it. Great venue, horrible coffee read more

The coffee was just alright for me but my coffee order is pretty boring - I always just get two espresso shots with 2 oz of hot water (Italiano). As soon as I ordered I noticed that they had an interesting pour-over equipment. If I do come back here, I will definitely try the pour-over and hopefully I can pick out my own coffee beans from their offerings. They sell a small selection of used latte saucers for 8 bucks! Huge find! We were vacationing from Las Vegas and were actually kind of bummed at the general lack of single origin coffee options around Seattle. This place offers a solid variety of single origin beans that they sell as "drip coffee" but each order is essentially a pour over on a 4 at a time pour system. I opted for the Brazilian and my wife got Sumatran. They offer 8/12/16 ounce sizes and the cost ranges from $3.75 to $5. We waited for perhaps 5-10 minutes on a Monday morning. There are bar and table seating options inside and a smattering of tables outside as well. Good view of the water wherever you pick! One possible area for growth would be to offer actual coffee cups rather than just the paper options. It looked like a few locals perhaps brought their own. read more

My husband and I had a recent trip to Port Townsend and went to this coffee shop twice. Coffee was amazing! Between the two visits we had a sampling of items, including cherry almond scone, bran muffin, spinach quiche, and a ham, cheese croissant and the bagels which they claim come from Manhattan. All pretty decent, other than the bagels. Even if true that they are from NY, they weren't great. View is awesome and you need to get there early as locals love the place (not surprising). Better Living Through Coffee is a well established indie cafe with a strong community base located in Port Townsend's downtown core. I've stopped in three times: once a long time ago pre-Yelp, second time with The Homie seated at the counter with our beverages (8/24/19), and most recently on a spontaneous visit to the Kitsap & Olympic Peninsulas (5/19/24). Seems the sweet spot is to stop in earlier in the morning before the onslaught of day trippers, especially during the weekends. I drove leisurely via the main exit or via Chimacum/Quilcene exit. Also, arriving earlier there's much better chance of finding street parking and/or catching the ferry to Whidbey Island. Better Living Through Coffee has the prime location of being adjacent to a public outdoor plaza and pocket beach access. Their cafe also has outdoor and indoor seating with waterfront views. Great selection of merch, cafe beverages, and scratch baked goods. Love that their pastry cases are always well stocked with a variety of enticing choices. They've upgraded to a POS system at the front counter, so I relinquished my former stamp card and joined the system to accrue points. Friendly counter folks that are able to deal with what seems to be a never ending line. Nice to see this is a spot where convos and community gatherings rule, only one laptop seen. I was able to take in the vibe and stay awhile at my window seat two top. I enjoyed a 12oz mocha...would have preferred a 16oz but that had 4 shots of espresso, 2 is just fine for me. I tried a slice each of the sausage & pepper quiche and carrot cake. The quiche was freshly cut and warmed up...I just have to remember to let it cool a bit before that first molten bite. As my first meal of the day, all three items did the job and hit the spot. Having a lovely waterfront view and warmth from the sunshine streaming through was also top notch. We've been here twice already on our trip to Port Townsend. It's a cute, friendly place with great coffee and tasty treats. I haven't tried the salmon quiche but it looks great! We've had some muffins, cookies, and croissants as well as various coffees and teas. Every drink is well made and the staff helpful and nice. This place is an AMAZING, not to be missed coffee spot in Port Townsend. First, the location is IDEAL. Right on the water. When we went, there was a woman sitting very near the water's edge with her beautiful pet duck. It took me some time to confirm that she was indeed sitting and relaxing with a pet duck who was splashing in the water. I don't imagine there are many places to take a duck for an outing; how great have a place to get a little treat and let your pet frolic. I was not a fan of the chai tea - but my daughter loved it so much she got another one the next day. The iced coffee was great. My husband - who is such a ridiculous coffee enthusiast that it is veering from charming hobby to alarming obsession - got a pour over and was very happy. While he likes light roast, single origin coffee, Better Living Through Coffee has a diverse selection of roasts (thank goodness - I like a darker roast coffee, like most people do). Came to Port Townsend for the weekend, and this spot didn't disappoint. I got the Cafe venois (with macadamia milk) one day and the americano (with cashew milk) the next day. Both were good. I love how they have local, organic fair trade coffee. Their organic milk and dairy free milks are no extra charge. The salmon quiche was amazing and they have a good amount of salmon in every bite. I highly recommend. The service of all the employees was the best. All of them were so nice and happily answered any questions I had. They made me feel super welcome. I would definitely come back here again when I'm back in Port Townsend. Definitely a local gem! The plus side on top of everything was the view of the water right outside of the cafe. read more

I visited over lunch on a Friday in the off season, and even then this place was hopping. - Beautiful view of the water and such a lovely interior you'll be happy wherever you sit. - Great food options, from quiche to almond croissants. I opted for a coconut pumpkin pie and I've never had anything quite like it. - Full selection of teas. And when you ask for your tea to go they offered to give me a tea bag or they could steep it themselves - plus they poured into my reusable cup. I've been coming here a couple times a year since I was old enough to drink coffee. Today I got a cup of the Brazil medium-dark roast. True to the description on the menu, it had notes of caramel, and it wasn't very acidic. My mom got the cafe Arancia, which is an orange spiced latte. The micro-foam was velvety smooth, and the flavor was sweet with just the right amount of orange coming through. The specialty latte menu hasn't changed in years, but that's not a bad thing--after all, if it's not broken don't fix it. They sell their own coffee beans here and specialize in darker roasts. We also ordered the onion roll, though I wouldn't recommend it-- the dough wasn't tasty. Better to stick to their coffee and quiches. The service is good here, and even on a busy day like today, the baristas were friendly and fast. If you dine in, there's wifi, plenty of seating, and a breathtaking view of the water. read more
