Steve and I got several great pastries and sweets from The Courtyard Cafe on our last trip to Port Townsend. We got a bar with lots of coconut on top, a slice of German Chocolate Cake and a Buttermilk Brownie. All of it was delicious so I will say that right now. Probably my favorite was the brownie and then the cake but I had no complaints about anything. This was intended to be a sweet stop but I'd like to try out a regular meal here again also. Oh man... Came here for a to go croissant with bacon and a latte. My bad for thinking there would be egg in it(guess I thought for $10.50 it would even though it said $9.99 on menu). No one was in there( Saturday morning at 9:30). Waiting way too long for it. While waiting we noticed how absolutely filthy the place was. They tack on $2.00 for takeout. Courtyard Cafe is situated at the far edge of Port Townsend in what appears to be a home converted into a charming establishment. The pastries and coffee are phenomenal. Seriously, bravo. Excellent service by very friendly staff. I would have given it five stars but the bathroom needs a deep cleaning. It would be ideal if there was soap and paper towels in their dispenser. Came here for the lunch since I had a few hours to myself. I got the twisted Monte Cristo, hot chocolate and blueberry scone. It was nice to sit outside relaxing and enjoying my lunch. Monday was their Friday so their selection was limited. The twisted Monte Cristo was delicious especially with the raspberry sauce. It added a nice touch to the sandwich. Hot chocolate was wonderful; marshmallow didn't turn out well. The consistency was off. I was looking forward to the marshmallow given other people reviews. The scone was a little bit too sweet for me with the glaze. Overall such a cute Little café in a cute Little Town. Would recommend and plan on coming back. read more

We came here for lunch after the boat tour and we made the right call! We loved the eclectic feel of the inside--it felt like you were in someone's home. Our party of four each had a different sandwich order, but they were loved by all. I had the cold veggie sandwich (we came here specifically because there were vegetarian options) and it hit the spot. Tried to come here a few months back but they were closed when they said they were open online. Tried stopping by again today at 11am on Sunday Nov 2nd and they were open this time. Their website says they serve French Toast but that was not available to order off the counter menu, when I asked about it they said they were not serving that at this hour...anyways they had Cinnamon Rolls though (which the French Toast is supposed to be made out of according to their website) so I tried that. The roll had a pretty good cinnamon taste but the icing was poorly made and fractured, the layers of the roll were very compressed together, and some areas of the roll were crunchy and difficult to eat because the sugar solidified and was rock hard on the bottom... If you want to know what a good cinnamon roll should eat like Fountain Cafe owners go to Butcher & Baker in Port Gamble or Blackbird Bakery on Bainbridge, yours greatly misses the mark. Partner got a $10 breakfast croissant sandwich. It took far too long for the staff to get the sandwich to us so much so that I noticed the interior of this place was tired, and adorned with basic cliche art. When the sandwich did arrive my partner said it was ultra hot on the outside, ice cold in the center. What were they doing? It wasn't busy. Pathetic. The Mocha we ordered was nothing special, barely could taste any chocolate and the espresso was lackluster (did get a strong caffeine boost though), but even Starbucks makes a better Mocha than what we got here. Cafe Tenby around the corner makes drinks way better than what you will get served here. They serve lunch here but we won't be back to try that based off this initial experience but I do recommend Owl cafe down the main drag across from Quimper Mercantile. read more

We order the cinnamon pull apart muffin which was very dry, pull pork sandwich with way too much bbq sauce, and an undrinkable latte. We ran to the bathroom to wash our hand and the bathroom was a disaster. Someone had an explosion all over the toilet. Called right after it switched to lunch menu for a pick up as I was looking forward to the offered 'Twisted Cristo' hot sandwich- it delivered!! The woman on the phone was very nice, helpful and gave a time frame for pick up. I showed up within that offered window of time, was greeted kindly immediately walking through the door, helped with my pick up order and had my hot sandwich fresh and ready by the time told to me. Both employees I interacted with were very attentive and nice, helpful, and the food was amazing on top of that! The Twisted Cristo is delicious! I love a classic Monte Cristo, but their take on the sandwich is delicious - every aspect of the sandwich seemed fresh, from the bread to the meat and cheese, even to the pineapple which still had a fresh 'crunch' to it and wasn't soggy or soft from the heat of the sandwich. The raspberry chipotle dipping sauce was amazing! Not too sweet and just spicy enough to have a savory kick. Along with the sandwich, I also got their chocolate croissant - hands down one of the best chocolate croissants I've ever had! The croissant itself was so soft and fresh, and there was a healthy amount of delicious, soft chocolate ganache on the inside. We ordered two breakfast items and took over 25 minutes, was not busy at all. Food was ok but how can you miss up eggs and bacon. The bakery items looked great , did not get a chance to try any. The main reason I only gave only 2 stars was the lack of customer service. The glass of water had lipstick on edge, it happens, I get it BUT when I asked the guy who brought us our food if I could get a clean glass he acted like it was the biggest inconvenience to walk 3 feet away. Did not get to take in the cute interior as they are keeping safe with COVID measures (really appreciate this), but we were lucky enough to grab a couple scrumptious to go options for home! The gentleman who helped us was very pleasant and helpful as well. The little menu board and the makeshift front counter did not show all offerings, so he was nice enough to run inside and name off the other options of the day. We settled on a piece of German chocolate pecan pie to take to my mum, and a raspberry scone (his pick of the three berry options consisting of blueberry and Marion berry as the others). It did not disappoint. My mums mouth watered over the pie and my husband confirmed it tasted pretty bomb, while that scone killed me with its tasty bites. The perfect amount of drizzle on top to add some sweetness, while the tangy raspberries were in abundance and paired perfectly with the texture of the scone. I MUST try the other two now. A brief stop for coffee and goodies after getting off the ferry in Port Townsend. I had a raspberry scone and a soda and Mrs Billy D had a croissant with ham and cheese. These scone I had was out of the earth good. There was about a thirty minute wait on the croissant and we had to check the status. You can't go inside so you order at the front door and they give you a number. There are tables out front and around the building. We enjoyed the scenery and grub. Great mom and pop shop. We had the beer cheddar soup and sandwich combos, Turkey cranberry, BLAST and the chicken pesto sandwiches. Soup was delicious as well as the sandwiches on homemade bread. The half sandwich was more than enough for all of us with the soup. FIL had the biscuits and gravy, he loved it with the giant bacon cheddar scone serving as the biscuit. This Cafe is probably one of the best in town. From great food such as sandwiches to drinks and desserts. Friendly staff. Beginning with their hot chocolate, it comes with a large home made marshmallow which beats the need for whipped cream. Although both wouldn't hurt. But the heat of the hot chocolate melts the marshmallow making it great. Definitely recommend it for that reason alone. They also have their Hot Sandwich called the Twisted Cristo, consisting of ham, turkey , pineapple , provolone, on grilled white bread with powdered sugar with a raspberry chipotle dipping sauce. That sandwich is awesome. Next, their French Dip Sandwich is the best I've ever had. As always, thinly sliced roast beef, provolone on a homemade toasted bun with Au Jus dipping sauce. To finish was a difficult choice. There are many but I narrowed it down to either their coconut cream pie, chocolate mousse pie or banana cream pie that also has chocolate. Banana cream pie was the winner and the BEST banana cream pie I've ever had. So this place for sure has 2 home runs for sure in a single visit. Best sandwiches in town! I always get the chicken pesto and they are very accommodating when I ask for it without lettuce and tomato, and never make me feel negatively about it. This is unfortunately a response to "Linda from Edmonds" and her review on 8/17/21. My whole family was there to witness Linda and her family verbally abusing the staff, without a mask on, through their front window. Every guest at the establishment was absolutely appalled at her treatment of a local, family managed business that is making great food through tough times. In spite of that treatment, the Courtyard Cafe 1) refunded all their money (because it took too long) and 2) comped their drinks. Linda repayed those courtesies by: telling everyone in line about the long wait, and writing a bogus negative review when she didn't even eat the damn food! Food was a 10 out of 10. Delicious pie, mikshakes, pastries and French Dip sandwich. You come to Port Townsend to stop and smell the roses. A cute little place, you walk up to order then grab a seat outside. I could see a big display case of pastries inside so I think they are doing the outside only because of Covid. The food took a long time, but you could tell the guy was stressed and he had two huge "Help Needed" signs outside. There was a line to order, so I'm sure he was breaking his bum to keep up with all. That being said, the punk ordered the cinnamon roll French toast and could not believe her good fortune. She "yummed" with every bite. It was a huge serving so she is still eating it today. I ordered "locals favorite" scrambled eggs, bacon, toast with jam. It was all very good, I feel like they did a good job with all the pressure they had. I would go back. They will get help and things will smooth out, they have a good menu with good ideas and the food is prepared very nicely. read more

We had lunch today at the Courtyard Cafe. We had just rolled into Port Townsend and saw this place on the list of good place to go to, so we went straight there. I have to say, I immediately fell in love the building, the setting, and all the eclectic style elements of the decor. Even going to the restroom is kind of an adventure. I ordered a half tuna salad sandwich on sourdough bread and a cup of tomato-basil soup. My wife ordered the reuben sandwich. I liked the tuna sandwich very much, especially since they fixed it without onions (sorry, I can't deal with raw onions in tuna). I also enjoyed the soup and the tomato flavor was really interesting. It had cheese raviolis in it, and the tomato flavor was wonderful. My wife's reuben however, was not such a good experience. She is always on the search for the best reuben, and she has noted that it really is a hard sandwich to do well. In this case the meat was tender and flavorful, but the sandwich came together as kind of a hot mess. They make the sandwich with a third slice of bread in the middle (like a club sandwich), and both the sauerkraut and the meat were both very juicy. The juices made the bread soggy almost immediately, and the whole thing kind of fell apart. The magic of reuben sandwiches is how the ingredients come together, and with the structure of the sandwich violated, it was impossible to make that happen. I saw several other sandwiches get served while we were there, and they all looked delicious, so I am sure that overall they probably do a great job here. Stopped by for lunch while we were on a wkd getaway to Port Townsend...and very glad we selected The Courtyard Cafe. They have a great selection of sandwiches and we both chose a 1/2 sandwich and soup option. I picked the B.L.A.S.T. which was thick bacon, lettuce, avocado, (seasoned) mayo & tomato (on fresh sourdough) with a cup of the smoked salmon chowder. It was a very substantial meal, quite good and I came away very full and satisfied. There is seating inside, outside on the front, side and rear patio and also in the rear courtyard. You order at the front counter and they bring your food to you. It did take them 30 minutes to get the food to our table but one bite of the sandwich, and we were okay to overlook this. The desserts looked great but we were too full to sample them...perhaps next time. It was a very positive food experience and happy to recommend The Courtyard Cafe if you are planning a trip to Port Townsend. read more

Worst attitudes we have ever experienced! September 2023 After reading some positive reviews, I had this restaurant on my "got to try" list while I was on the ferry coming to Port Townsend. What a disappointment! Restaurant was supposed to open at 8 AM. All of us, our family and two other parties, were waiting outside to go in. A woman was opening the curtains at 8:05 AM to the dining room and she could see us outside, yet they were still closed. It was 8:12 and all of us were wondering what was going on. I decided to call the restaurant to see if they were opening today (Thurs) and a woman responded with "I'm getting there". Not another word other than that lame response! I asked "do you know how much longer? should we wait or go somewhere else? Her answer was"that's up to you". The proper response should have been "sorry, I'm running late, please hang out a bit, opening in a few minutes", etc. and I'M SORRY ABOUT ANY INCONVENIENCE! But no, her tone was "I don't care what you do". I simply said "thank you" and ended the call. A few minutes later a woman came out to adjust one of the tables on the outside patio. A lady from the other party asked "Are you opening soon, it's after 8 o'clock? in which the server (or whatever she was) said " it's only me today" and walked away. Another rude, don't give a crap attitude! How about " Yes, very soon, my apologies, we are short staffed today, and it's only me". I think any normal customer could understand that and would be willing to wait it out, but instead her attitude was enough to make all of us (8 total) get in our vehicles and go somewhere else! We all left at the same time. I won't mention the other comments I heard about this experience, as I'll just speak for myself. I have never met anyone operating a business who behaved this way, acting like they can care less about what they're doing to turn people off, and not give a crap! I don't care how good the food may be (didn't get that chance to find out), but now... I wouldn't eat here ever! If they act like this over the phone and in person, then I have to wonder what goes on in the kitchen! Family owned and operated? That just means you can do whatever the hell you want, and you don't have anyone to be accountable to! Restaurants these days charge good money to eat at their establishment's. I don't mind paying when the service is good, and I tip well to show my appreciation! When the service sucks or the attitudes are like these people, I'll go somewhere else where they can appreciate the business. There are plenty of restaurants nearby with staff that are more than happy to greet you, serve you, and make you feel welcomed! Those are the places that you keep going back to. This was one of the first places we had lunch when we rolled into town about six months ago. Love their sandwiches and soups - my favorites are the turkey cranberry and beer cheese soup. They offer a half-sandwich and cup of soup option which is perfect for lunch. Their bakery items are amazing, but they sell out early. Their sausage gravy over a bacon cheddar scone takes biscuits and gravy to a whole 'nother level. You order and pay at the counter and they bring the goodies to your table. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Located in the first floor of a multi-story old home - very cool. My only complaint is that their days of operation are erratic and not documented - like many places here in PT, their days/hours are different at various online sites (including their own). The last three times (yes, three) I've tried to go for lunch or breakfast, they've had a small "closed" sign taped to the door even though it's a day that according to their own sign that they should be open. This place is AWESOME! It is a gorgeous Cafe in a beautiful converted Victorian house. The gardens are beautiful, even in February. Our lattes were omg awesome sauce. The bakery is so so good. Cinnamon rolls displayed without frosting so you can customize your sweet. And they're enormous. Like I'll have some later. And then for a snack later later. Without asking, they brought our little dogs a bag of treats! BACON. They gifted our little monsters BACON. I love this place. You will too. read more

I had a similar experience to other reviewers when trying this place alone one morning around 10am. Just figuring out how their ordering system works and seeing what was available that day (apparently the morning crowd had already consumed many of the offerings of the day) was my first obstacle, and when I asked the staff person behind the counter what they had left and how to place an order, she offered a scowling offhand remark that implied I was too stupid to waste her time explaining it to me. I just asked what the few things in the case were, chose one and looked around for a table. I asked should I just sit anywhere and received a curt nod. Looking at all the empty tables, I chose the one that seemed cleanest; it was not. In fact my sleeve stuck to the table when I sat down! Given only one bus person there (who was staring out the window, not cleaning dishes/tables), I asked for something to clean mine myself. I was offered a cold, wet, gross rag. So instead I took napkins left on another table and wiped mine with my own bottle of Purell then sat down. My 'pastry' tasted dry, stale and lacked much filling. My patience and taste buds overrode my hunger and I returned to the counter to pay and leave. I don't recall the exact words, but the person at the counter made a comment under her breath that was delivered to let me know she was glad I was leaving. As I walked to my car, a young man outside tucking chairs under the tables there said he hoped I'd enjoyed the cafe. I turned to him and said I wouldn't be back, if that was what he was asking. He seemed concerned and asked me why; but at that point I just said there were too many reasons why not, and they should take stock of the entire operation.
