We tried this on a Sunday afternoon while over on a day trip from Whidbey. We were looking for a simple lunch with maybe a view deck or something? That's pretty much what we got here though not overwhelmingly good. First I'll say that other recent reviews pointing out differences in this cuisine vs traditional Mexican American or authentic Mexican dining and the very nice staff are not far off. Of course it's all personal taste and expectations. So here we were only moderately pleased with the food and drinks but it was a marvelous place to spend a little time near the water in nice outside tables with light blankets folded over the backs of seats for chilly times on the deck. The margaritas (hers spicy and mine standard) were good enough though served in a chimney glass which is different. The tacos we ordered were pretty good though not the best ever by any means. The hot sauce was "house made habanero " I guess in generic bottles after asking for Cholula. It was ok but not my preferred sauce. And the chips and salsa I asked if they were included and brought to the table but later found that they charged us for them???? Not a fan of that from an expense and a transparency standpoint!! The chips are house made and not uniformly made with thick chewy parts and a lot of crumbs. House made salsa reminded me of a house made version of jarred salsa. The staff was very nice and accommodating and two cute sisters dominate the service scene which was fun to watch. So I don't know that we will go again but glad we tried it. I would have to agree with Jacob S on this. The staff is friendly, attentive and all-around excellent, the place is spotless-clean and has an incredible view. But the food most definitely fell flat (sorry). The chicken burrito I ordered tasted like it was stuffed with Wonder Bread. (But that's not a bad thing if you like Wonder Bread -- many older people in the Pacific NW can't handle anything spicier than ketchup, so maybe this "works" for them. It was certainly soft, fresh and chewy Wonder Bread, so full credit for that.) The home-made tortilla chips were a very nice touch, very crunchy. The salsa served with it (verde and rojo) was a bit disappointing. If Gerber Baby Food made salsa, this would be it. Fresh, pretty bland, and had the consistency and texture of applesauce. They have a few unmarked bottles of house-made salsa, made with apple cider (according to one of the waitstaff) which was a bit spicier, but an unusual flavor. (My wife guessed that it had been made with beer.) So if you love Mexican food, but can't tolerate anything spicier than mayonnaise, this would be a great choice. read more

The new location on water street is really beautiful and the patio has great views. The service was very poor today. We waited a long time before our order was taken for a party of 4. The food came out in two waves, the first wave had the orders correct. The next wave of food was all wrong. They did not have my order at all and another order at the table was missing things that are supposed to come with it. I eventually got my order after the rest of my table had eaten half of their food. My order was still incorrect (no avocado on it when the menu says it comes with) and it was cold. They did not offer to comp my meal or give us a discount in any way to make up for me waiting for my meal. Cool little Mexican restaurant in downtown Port Townsend. Old town cafe vibe with Mexican cuisine that uses some local PNW sourced ingredients. Both tacos we had were fantastic, and the chips and guacamole were great too. The tortilla chips were warm and tasty so I assume that they prep them on site. My daughter loved the horchata too. I stopped for a mid-lunch. The service was quick and friendly. The staff checked on me a couple times while i was there. It is a small place, so take that into consideration. I got the fish burrito that was plenty of food for one person. I would definitely have that again when I visit. read more

Awesome ceviche!! The margarita was memorable. Looking forward to our next visit to La Cocina.

Needed a quick bite before jumping on the ferry. Service was prompt and everything was fresh and delicious. I especially enjoyed the seared rockfish tostadas. Ask for their homemade apple habanero hot sauce. One of my kids didn't love the shredded chicken in his burrito, but he's pretty picky. Another son said his breakfast burrito was great. My wife and last son both enjoyed their Al pastor (tacos and bowl). Neat old building in a charming downtown. Wish we'd had more time to explore the nearby shops. read more

The food is delicious as ever ~ especially the Chilaquiles :) The only downside to La Cocina was its old location, but the new spot on Water St is so gorgeous and now this is my favorite restaurant in Jefferson County. This is exactly the vibe I've been waiting to pop back up in Port Townsend ever since the amazing Asian fusion restaurant at The Castle closed. In a town full of bad restaurants this place is the worst. La Cocina is absolutely abysmal. I have had dirt that was more flavorful and the entire place feels like a beige exercise in entitlement. I've had better treatment to my mouth from Taco Bell For how expensive these entrees were, I was expecting much more from the flavor department. Like I am genuinely baffled about how non-existent the flavor was. I ordered the Mole Rojo Con Pollo, and I received the most pathetic excuse for a molé I've ever had. No Flavor whatsoever. Black beans and white or brown rice (couldn't tell but it was gross, and seriously no Mexican rice?!). I'm a big dude and always am a part of the clean plate club, but this meal was such an utter disappointment that I didn't even finish more than half of it. The saving grace of this place is their service staff. Probably the best service I've ever received at a sit down restaurant, nicest people. After reading some of the reviews the only ones I would agree with is when the reviews that stated this was the blandest food I've ever eaten. Absolutely no flavor at all. None and I mean none. I am moderately confused by this restaurant. They serve liquor, but only tequila. They are open for lunch and early dinner. The listed hours online are apparently wrong and have elicited zero response to change from Google. Our server was very kind. The ambiance was nice but chef/owners' seeming indecision to keep open or closed felt awkward. We had some drinks and apps and actually felt like it was time to leave at 6:45pm. We were even told that if we wanted dinner it would have to be for takeout. Maybe at some point, instead of trying to close early, they'd consider switching things to a happy hour dynamic- with small dishes to share and drink specials. The food is good, after all read more

The Chile Rellano and Tostadas Pescado were both similar to baby food in flavor and the tostada was "too mushy." We immediately went and got pizza after. Not worth $30 a plate. It's always tricky to find food that is gluten and dairy free, and still palatable. We stopped here for dinner for a birthday celebration and ate outside- lovely little place for a summer evening. Was very handy to have the menu posted outside so we could deliberate without taking up too much space. Service was quick and friendly! However we did have to ask a couple times for more silverware and never did get another cup for our three-party group despite it being pretty obvious that there were three of us eating. Food was good and portions were about average- only downside was it was a bit spendy. Would eat here again when visiting Port Townsend in the future. read more

What a strange experience.. A shop owner recommended this place. It's nice and clean. It has a view. Host was very friendly and seated us quickly. First server was fine but seemed new. She must've done something wrong because she was "corrected" by another staff member right in the middle of the floor. Awkward.. A man brought our soups which were a larger portion than we ordered but then tried to gaslight us telling us the huge bowls were actually cups (no, they made a mistake) charged us for cups so whatever. Their sever brought us extra guacamole and was later reprimanded for it within earshot. Awkward again. Asked for soup spoons and he said they didn't have any but managed to find some. If you're serving heavy soup why no proper spoons? Chips were excellent. Everything else including the spicy margaritas were meh.. Not bad. Not great. I wouldn't necessarily expect to find authentic Mexican food in PNW though it's possible). The vibe in that place is the problem. Dear Cassandra, Thank you for your lengthy response. Yes, taste is subjective. We did not enjoy the food. That is our opinion and what Yelp is for. Our pinto beans were undercooked. I think that is the least subjective thing I can say. The server was rude. We have both worked in restaurants and have been down in the weeds. There's a way to reply to customers when you're down in the weeds. If your server was that stressed, it sounds like a staffing issue. She brought the wrong beverage and never brought hot sauce even though she asked if we wanted some. ADA compliance. I hadn't considered the exceptions made for historic buildings. Your building is gorgeous by the way. Food safety. Shredded cheese that fell into the salsa by mistake is gross, I'm sorry. And looking at your profile picture, it was you that refilled the used water bottles from one set of patrons to the next. That's just icky. I would have assumed that the water pitcher that is left on the table for diners to use while eating would be washed between uses. So hey, instead of attacking my review, take the feedback and learn from it. We had a lousy dining experience with some things that could be readily fixed. It was a pretty place, and the customer service was great. The decor was pretty as well, especially the water jugs to serve your water. I had ordered the horchata and the rockfish ceviche, the horchata was a little sweeter and a lot smaller than i'm used to, especially for 7$. The ceviche, however, was disappointing; about 25-30% of the dish was actual fish and half of the plate was taken up by half of an avocado. That would have been fine if it hadn't cost 19$. My friends got burritos which were very bland. I don't recommend, just because the quality and flavor of food is not worth the steep price. read more

Friendly staff, though I felt a little burned when the server offered chips and salsa right away, which I later found was a $5 charge. No big deal, but it's commonly free at many Mexican restaurants so it would've been nice to get a heads-up. The salsa was good, but the chips seemed a touch old. The first time I came I had the chile rellenos plate. It was good but seemed rather small and lackluster given the price ($27 before tax & tip). I gave it another ago and I had the mole rojo con pollo. I've had my share of mole sauce variations, but this one was bizarre - it was like chicken with sweet hot fudge sauce. No spice at all, only super sweet chocolate. I can't bear wasting meat, so I ate it but it was difficult and now I'm a little nauseous. When I finally finished it, the tablet payment terminal was not very clean, and the default tip amounts were 20-25-30% while just about every other restaurant sets it as 15-20-25. Again, not a big deal, but my overall impression of this place is they're trying to soak tourists for all they're worth. It'll be a hot minute before I brave trying this place again. read more
