I can't say I've had many donuts from donut shops across my life, but these were the best I've had yet. I got lucky on a Friday morning before Fourth of July and had some luck that they weren't completely sold out. I went in and only wanted a glazed doughnut to see if they were as good as everyone says, but I left with a good variety of donuts, all of which were incredible. Showing up this early only for people ahead of you walk out with 3-5 boxes at a time. The hurdles aren't worth it. Now, if someone else brought them to an event and had them available - I would not scoff don't get me wrong, I'd have one (maybe two). I just can't get on board with this place philosophically. The mystique and purposeful scarcity of both selection and what leads to closing quite early is at this point trivial. But it appears the scarcity is the appeal. If you are truly looking for some of the best donuts in the Pittsburgh area, then look no further. Better Maid is a locally-owned small business with some of the best cake donuts I have ever tasted. Located on Steuben Street in the West End, this shop dates back several decades. It is located in an unassuming white building, with little signage. However, there is plenty of street parking along with the private lot on the side. This place does not necessarily have set business hours. They have an open time, and go until they sell out. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday they are open at 7 AM, and the weekends is 8 AM. I would advise arriving for the set open time if you are planning to get donuts on any given day. Especially on the weekend, they will sell out within an hour or two (yes, the donuts are that good!!). Plan accordingly if you are planning to stop. It is not unusual for a line to be forming 30+ minutes before the doors open. The plus of getting there early like that is that you will be one of the first served, and therefore able to get first picks! The selection of donuts rotates each day. There is not necessarily a schedule on which this occurs, but they might have a flavor today that they will not have tomorrow. Some of my favorites overtime have been the blueberry cake, pumpkin cake, cherry "sandwich" filled, sour cream, and so many more. I have asked the staff before if/when they would be making a particular kind, and they will let you know if they have an idea, so do not be afraid to ask. They sell cake donuts, regular donuts, long Johns, cinnamon rolls, and other speciality items each day. There are also donut holes, while are quite honestly some of the best I have ever tasted anywhere. They are usually warm and melt in your mouth. Do not leave without buying some if they are available. The value here is unbeatable. With the donuts being homemade and fresh, the prices are the best anywhere. They are even cheaper than somewhere like Dunkin, but the quality is 100 times better. This is probably another reason the people keep coming back for these delicacies. However, note that it is CASH ONLY! When I first started coming here, an older gentleman owned the place. He was so friendly and social to everyone who walked through the door. I always enjoyed interacting with him when I came by. A few years ago, a younger couple bought the business. However, the previous owner still works alongside them, which is cool to see! The new owners have been more consistent with being open during advertised open days, and are active on their Instagram account. This helps with knowing specials, when they sell out, if there is a change in being open, etc. Before, the days were sometimes hit or miss if they would be open. However, this has improved a lot since the new ownership has been in place. I love Better Maid - there truly is not a better cake donuts or donut hole anywhere I have tried in Pittsburgh. Awesome donut place! There's a reason people start lining up 20mins before they open every day. Donuts are made fresh daily with love and care. They have a great variety of flavors too: glazed, cake donuts, cream filled, frosted, etc. I waited about an hour and 15mins to order, but it was worth it. Everyone in line was very friendly and shared the same feeling, something the staff clearly appreciated with their genuine smiles and service. I arrived around 7:20 AM. There was a line out the door. After 20 minutes I was waited on by one of the two very friendly employees. Out of the dozen donuts I ordered, I had two long johns, two cinnamon rolls, a few cake donuts and a few Oreo type. Donuts were fresh and the best I've ever had. They were sold out right around 8AM. I was very skeptical of the hype around this place. I generally am not the type to stand in a very long line for food. But I was in the area one Saturday morning around 9 am and the line looked manageable so figured I'd try and see if I could get some. I waited maybe 10-15 mins, so not too bad. My 5-star review is 100% due to the old fashioned donut. When it was my turn to order they had literally just brought out a tray of donuts that looked really good. I arrived 20 minutes before opening at 8am anticipating a line and as expected there was about 15 people ahead of me when I arrived. It was quite charming, the line, with those around me sharing their favorite flavors and memories about visiting the donut shop throughout the years. The line is where I learned the donut holes are most popular and a must-buy and to consider yourself lucky if you're in the front of the line because they tend to sell out quick! Once 8am hit, the door promptly opened and the line started to make its way inside. I have had these wonderful donuts enough times to rank them among the top two or three in the city, but it's always someone else doing the picking up. Today it was me and I know that you can't wait too much past opening or they are going to be sold out. Their hours today (Sunday) said 8 to 10, so I was there at 8:30. There was a line of about a dozen people in front of me and by the time I got to the front 15 or 20 minutes later, there were still a decent number of donuts, but a lot of varieties were long gone. I got a dozen mixed from the varieties remaining, which were mostly chocolate and white frosted. I think you really need to be here when the doors open if you want the full variety to choose from, such as apple, blueberry and their original glazed, none of which I was able to score today. What I got is still wonderful, though, because it's all made with the same basic recipe, which has a texture unlike any other donut I've had locally. I've been trying for a long time to find a good description and I think both the texture and flavor remind me a bit of funnel cake. That's a high compliment. Even with all of the hype here and on social media, I still did not expect these donuts to be as good as they were. Maybe the best donuts I have ever had- I wish I could have them everyday. They weren't super dense which is always a turn off for me donut wise. The donut holes were fantastic as well- everyone was right. Got in line on a Saturday morning at 8:23, 23 mins past open. The line in front of me was about 25 people deep and moving. I waited about 20 minutes and then ordered two donuts to try - a fritter and a chocolate iced with coconut. The two men working were super efficient and friendly. I've attempted to visit this local legend of a donut shop 3x. The first two times, I missed them- they were fresh outta donuts. I knew the 3rd time had to be the charm and sure enough... it was. I made sure to get up early on national donut day and drove over to Better-Maid Donuts. There was a slight line, but it moved fast. Once inside I learned that they only permit two people in the shop at a time to adhere to Co-Vid guidelines. Donuts are $.75 each and you can get a whole dozen for $8.00. In addition to donuts they sell crawlers, eclairs and cinnamon rolls. All their donuts are fresh cake donuts and topped with either an icing, coconut shreds, or even powdered sugar. A very nice lady named Rose took care of people and pointed out what was still available. I purchased a couple of blueberry donuts, a sugar covered cake donut, a couple of iced donuts and an apple crawler. I learned that you can place advanced orders but must do so in person. They will not take orders over the phone. They are open fairly early every day of the week except Mondays. Once home I ate the blueberry donut. It was fresh and delicious!!! Truly an outstanding donut for such a reasonable price. I know I will not be disappointed with my other selections. They all smell fresh and good!
