I am befuddled at the current rating for Betty's (3.5). I would give it a solid 4.5 because it is exactly what it says it is- a pie place with history on the way to Gooseberry Falls. I came here three times during the pandemic through multiple trips up to the North Shore. Every time I've gotten a pie and each pie I have had has been soooo good. Twice I dined in and got the broasted chicken. My husband got the burger. If you're on a diet, this is not your place. If you want healthy food, pass this place, because this is where you load your carbs and get a hearty heart-stopping calorie-filled meal. The servers have always been some of the nicest we have come across. They were always wonderful and never rushed us while making sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere is always a nice blue clean diner feel. There's always ample parking. This is the perfect little spot when you're heading to the North Shore! We ate dinner at Betty's, a cute little dinner on the scenic drive. It was so crowded at lunch that we came in at 7pm for dinner and found a table quickly. Our server was kind and very friendly and told us about her favorites on the menu. I at the brisket sandwich, which was ok. I think it needed some bbq sauce to accompany the brisket. My husband ordered the breasted chicken dinner, which he said was delicious. Down home cooking! The meals are good, but the real star is the pie! I ordered the raspberry rhubarb crumble (hard to find rhubarb where I live). It was recommended by the server. I asked for it to be warmed and topped with ice cream. The oatmeal crumble on top was the best part! My husband ordered the butterfinger pie, which I assumed would be served chilled, but it came room temperature. Betty's pies has such a rich history of making delicious, consistent food and pie. I've had so many fun memories here and have never been disappointed. The wild rice burger is so Minnesotan and delicious I love it! I'm a huge fan of unique veggie burgers that are not just made with beyond meat. I've never had it before even though I've been here many times. I love the cream pies and think they are a great post-hike snack. They took a very very long time for our food so I suggest you order in person instead of over the phone. Well run establishment with lots of customers and no lines today. For 5.25$ you get an average sized piece which seems like it was packaged yesterday. The bottom was a soggy indistinguishable mess from the delicious apple filling topped with crunchy toppings and caramel. My buddy tried the cream pies and despite the moist crust enjoyed his peanut butter cup pie too. The last time we stopped at Betty's Pies was 12-years ago. We liked it then, but after a few visits to the North Shore we found our favorite restaurant - The Rustic Inn. It's still our favorite, but we decided to try Betty's Pie on this trip for lunch on our way back home. It was a good decision. Betty's Pies is more touristy but it's now become a favorite for lunch. Our lunch of a Turkey club and Blueberry Salad with chicken did not disappoint. Then came the best part. We ordered the Key Lime and 5-layer Chocolate. It was my first time here. I heard a lot of good comments about how wonderful the pies are. I read a little back story about Betty. She started with the idea of a little shack, a place for the fisherman to come post fishing. She served donuts and coffee. The business expanded from there. Now it is a restaurant for seating for roughly 150 people. We had gone for brunch. The food was mediocre. The eggs we received were not cooked well enough (for my liking) still runny egg white and the yolk was not cooked at all. We got a banana cream pie to go and a slice of French blue berry to enjoy there. Let's just say that that one slice didn't last long! The banana cream pie was good, but not excellent. Omg the pies! So every time I make a trip to the Northshore I try to stop here. There are other locations but this one I think makes the best pies. I have never eaten at the location and always get whole pies but they are always friendly and helpful. You can call ahead and order whole pies or to make sure they are in stock before going. Worth the wait; the crowd outside tells you that there are great things inside! We stopped in for a late lunch/early diner on a Tuesday at 3pm. The wait was given as 25 minutes and we were seated in 20. The hostess was kind and professional. She deftly acknowledged the awkward man in front of me who was trying to chat, while still giving me a warm welcome and calming setting me up with a pager for my table. There was ample parking with a lot in front and another in the back. There were also convenient places to wait for our table: benches and covered areas to stand. This was our first visit and we weren't sure what to expect. Once seated we were pleased by the old school diner atmosphere. Our server was friendly and efficient. She was just a calmly happy person and that just added to the nice day we were having. My wife had the Betty's Special (half a chicken salad sandwich, bowl of soup, slice of pie) and a cherry coke. The Cherry Coke was so refreshing and bursting with the cherry flavor. She enjoyed her meal thoroughly and chose the turtle coconut cream pie. I risked stealing a taste of her pie and it was worth the look I earned for it! The children had the kids mac-n-cheese and chicken tenders. They enjoyed their meals too, one with apple sauce and one with fries. Our oldest had the Agate Cheeseburger; a well made diner style burger. I had the Beef Pasty. It was delicious; if you aren't familiar with pasties, it's a pot pie without the pot lol. The filling was hot and the vegetables and beef full of flavor. The pastry was also very tasty and the gravy brought all the elements together into an excellent meal. Since I'm a dad I also ate the kid's leftovers so I can say that the mac-n-cheese, chicken tenders, and Agate Cheeseburger were all also delicious lol. Other pies enjoyed were the Banana Cream, Carmel Apple Crunch, and the Great Lakes Crunch. (Eldest daughter had the Polar Pie Shake which involved blending vanilla ice cream with her chosen slice of 5 layer Chocolate Cream pie.) A family of 5 ate lunch and enjoyed 5 slices of pie and the bill was about $77 before taxes. Very reasonable prices, good service, tasty food, epic pies! It's worth the drive and worth the wait. As an update, I did try Betty's again and I actually loved it this time!! I got the crunch topping pies: Caramel Apple and the blackberry peach one. The fillings were more juicy and a bit more sweet. Less dense than the regular double crust pies. I also got a French blueberry pie and it was a perfect mix of sweetness and not too much. I wish the blueberries was a bit more tart. My step dad always stops here when he's in the area, so we all tried it out per his recommendation. The first thing is there's a long wait for slices of pie. We ordered coffee while we were waiting which was pretty flavorless and watered down. When we got the pie, even he was disappointed by how small they were. The plastic boxes were minuscule. The price of pie here was actually comparable to LA! The pies themselves were ok. I had the apple and the blueberry. They were alright, but they weren't anything to brag home about. They were sweeter than expected, and the crust was pretty bland. It wasn't crumbly like you would expect, it was almost more of a cookie texture. They don't serve breakfast all day, so we ended up eating our slices in the car and heading to another diner for our brunch. As you've already seen the 1,000 times while scrolling through reviews, Betty's Pies is truly a must-stop while on the North Shore. It's the perfect little spot to grad a treat while on the road. The service is wonderful and speedy. They are always packed, but don't make you feel rushed. Make sure to try to grab a window seat so you have a view of the lake! Greeting was great. Cute vibe. Service was poor...not at all attentive. Pie was mediocre. We stopped in after a day of hiking for pie. Seemed unusual to have to wait at 3 in the afternoon but Betty's is popular so 20 minutes seemed doable. The gentleman hosting was great, polite and engaging. We were seated at the counter. This is where the experience became disappointing. Took several minutes to be acknowledged and when we indicated we just wanted pie, we became transparent. We placed our order, but 15 mins later had to remind the server of our order. The slices we received were disappointing...slivers compared to what others were getting on their plates...maybe we didn't use the correct secret code to get normal sized slice of pie. The pie itself was ok. The blueberry filling was yummy small wild blueberry but the slice served was so small (should have took a photo). The raspberry/rhubarb should have been called rhubarb pie since raspberry was almost undetectable. We are also very turned off, if when we pay in cash , the waitstaff ask if we want change. Please assume we would like our change unless we tell you. Many places in Northern Minnesota seem to be in a time warp, transporting you back to the late 60s or early 70s. Betty's does that. This charm can't outdo the service shortcomings and the mediocrity of their namesake . I'd encourage you to stop in because it looks like many of those around us were enjoying the experience. If you are going up the 61 Highway up north and are going threw Two Harbors you have to stop at Betty's Pies. This place is so good. I had the strawberry rhubarb pie with ice cream and it was absolutely delicious! I wish I would have gotten a whole pie To take with me home.
