We decided to do a pie-off and bought slices of double-crust apple pie from Rustic and Betty's to determine who we thought was the best. We had a much longer wait for pie at Betty's, and were lucky to get a parking place at all. It was mobby, and it wasn't even the weekend! There was about a 10 minute wait to order at the outdoor window, and a 15-20 wait for our slices. Most of the people ahead of us seemed to be getting pie shakes. In addition to the apple pie slice, we bought a toffee cream one. We ate it soon after our visit. It was delicious. The pale crust reminded me of shortbread, the filling light, sweet, and creamy, with what seemed to be Heath bits throughout. It was great and surprisingly not filling at all. As for the apple pie comparison, Betty's version was more cohesive a crust and easier to eat, but it was also surprisingly bland. The thicker crust at the edge was dry, too. The fillings from both bakeries were quite close, both good. From Betty's, we liked the cream pie slice much more than the apple. I had the best fried chicken in my life, and learned that it's a Midwest invention called Broast chicken, it was a 4 piece of chicken, leg , thigh, wing and breast, including a side for $16. I was full before I got to my pie. Apparently Broast is a company that sells the pressure cooker deep fryer and the marinate with seasoning. The fried chicken is light, crispy and just the right amount of seasoning. Much lighter coating than KFC or Popeyes, and the meat is very moist, even the chicken breast. read more

Ohhhh Betty - talk about redemption! We stopped in around 2pm, with the parents, thinking it was an ideal stop for them, despite our last so-so experience. The wait was estimated at 30-40min. To my parents' dismay, we agreed to wait. The gentleman in the back offered to allow my father a chair to sit in, as he was standing with a cane. +1 The actual wait time was about 20min. The prices were absolutely fantastic and the staff was so wonderful. A must stop when you're in the area. We were doing a driving tour on our way to Voyageurs and sooooo many people suggested Betty's Pies. Luckily the wait wasn't too long, but I know it can get a little long on weekends. Luckily there are plenty of places to wait outside, with all the gorgeous scenery. We waited about 30 minutes, but it was worth it! I was excited to see vegetarian and gluten free options. Our waitress was very friendly and made some great suggestions. I went for the gluten free "backpacker" veggie burger and I have to say, it was maybe one of the best veggie burgers I've ever had. Wild rice patty with the Swiss cheese, grilled onions, chipotle mayo- it was just an incredible combo. Came with a side of chips, because the fries are not gf. But wow, super yummy sandwich and a gluten free bun. And the dessert! I got the gf peanut butter pie, my piece was HUGE, I was eating it happily for days. So much yum! We did the walk-up line for some to-go pie slices. They also had some daily specials, a food menu, and indoor restaurant but we chose to get our slices and sit out on their picnic benches. The caramel apple pie... heavenly. I could eat the crumble topping by the jar full. I wish we had brought a slice home to stick in the microwave and eat warm. The Butterfinger cream pie was surprisingly not overly sweet. The pies and breakfast are great here; however, I had an issue with the food service. I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich with no feta cheese and replaced with provolone cheese, only to receive it with feta cheese. I requested the sandwich be fixed. When they brought the sandwich back out, I found that they added provolone cheese, but they just kept the feta on ‍ I just scraped it off and ate it because I was so hungry at that point. If you see someplace that says "world famous" you probably want to try it. This was the case for us when passed Betty's Pies while on vacation. Betty's is a cute roadside place along the north shore with dine in or walk up service. Along with the pies they also had burgers, etc but we did not try those and opted to use the to go window. The service was good, they give you a her so you know when your order is ready. I tried slices of my two favorite pies, key lime and blueberry. The blueberry was just okay, pretty bland but the crust was decent. The key lime was awful, this is not a real key lime pie, rather their interpretation of one. It tasted like fake lime juice and it was a cream pie rather than a real key lime pie. It also had a weird texture and left a strange greasy coating and icky aftertaste in your mouth. My husband has lemon meringue and cheese cake, he said both were just okay and pretty disappointing. We both agreed they did not taste homemade, I would skip Betty's, it was pretty disappointing and if they are world famous, it's likely not for the taste of their pies. read more

A Minnesota destination! The parking lot is tricky but they expanded it. During the busy summer months, the pie service line is outdoors. Some picnic tables and port o potties. We also noticed from our last visit ( a couple of years ago) they improved the road situation so now there's a dedicated left turn lane into Betty's. They have a great selection of cream pies. You can get the whole pie or by the slice. And the toffee pie we got did not disappoint! Creamy, chocolaty, and sweet. Definitely needed some coffee to wash down the sugar rush! Want to like this restaurant very much but the pasty was simply a disappointment. Good service and there's a small line outside for takeout, and the pasty was YUGE, I figure it must be good and commanding a 4 star. But it goes downhill from there. The whole thing was flavorless, there wasn't any gravy in there, just dry, big chunks of potato and beef. Maybe they expected people to use those cold slaw (was also flavorless and chewy) and sauce? Didn't want to throw it away. Even the flour crisp isn't tasted like a pasty, more like a cake. Pasty is my favorite comfort food, ate it pretty much on a trip if I can find it. The crust was dry and hard in the cream pie, but the filling was good. I'd probably stick to the regular non cream pies since those can be heated up to make the crust softer. This place was a "must go" spot all over TikTok so we had to go! After a couple hikes in the morning at the nearby state parks along the lake, we stopped at Betty's Pies. I got the first thing I saw on the menu, which was the Isle Royale Chicken Pesto Sandwich and my boyfriend got the Beargrease burger. The pesto sandwich was a delicious chicken breast sandwich on a ciabatta bread, slathered in pesto aioli, banana peppers, and feta cheese. I subbed the fries for onion rings. The Beargrease burger was incredibly flavorful, topped with chipotle mayo, pepper jack, and grilled onions and it came with fries as well. And they have the best fries, in my opinion, which are the crispy straight fries. Our waitress was sweet and answered all of our questions. We had to finish our meal with pies so we got the French Silk cream pie, and I tried the Great Lakes Crunch top pie- A MUST GET! It was a fruit pie with warm, soft apples, strawberries, rhubarb, blueberry, and raspberry, topped with a warm crunch top and we topped it with whipped cream. A stop we always take up north! This place has grown so much it's crazy. They have it operating quite efficiently which is nice. I prefer the to go side so we can get in and out quickly. The food is decent. Tried the belated fried chicken today and it was cooked perfectly. The kids meals are $6.50 and come with applesauce or fries and a Capri Sun. For press we got the Great lakes pie with a crinkle topping (a family favorite), coconut cream, decent, and key lime (no limes are used in the making of this so I was disappointed that it tasted like like jello, not true key lime). People raved about this place, and when we found out we were taking a trip to the North Shore, we knew we had to stop. The wait was about 40 minutes at noon on a Thursday, but the amazing hostess at the check-in desk was telling jokes the whole time. She was hilarious, and it made our wait really quick and enjoyable. We were taken back to a big booth for six, and our server was with us right away. We ordered way too much food, but it was all tasty. We got the Beargrease Burger, the Palisade Pulled Pork, the Stewart River Cheesesteak, Betty's Special, and a couple of kids meals. Everything was really good! And then we got pie. We talked about sharing a couple of slices, but we couldn't decide, so we got four between the six of us. These slices were giant! Stopped by Betty's pie before seeing the leaves change colors. I think their onion rings honestly were my top 3 in Minnesota from their breakfast/lunch menu. Obviously we came for the pies and had to try as many as we could stomach (we failed and had to take some to go on top of us ordering another pie each). Cute retro diner motif. Restaurant is very clean. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and it was packed. You can buy pie by the slice or whole, which is fantastic. We bought five slices so we could try several different kinds of pie. We also ordered food. We got the hot turkey sandwich with cole slaw and the club sandwich with fries. The food was good.
