Removal and replacement of driveway. Excellent craftsmanship, professional service and easy to work with.

Our CSA/road association hired Betz Works for road maintenance work. As required by county, they have a year warranty on their work. They waited until the end of fall to do the work, just as the days were getting wet & cold (not ideal conditions for laying asphalt). Weeks later, neighbors on one part of the job said their road was raveling and we noticed cracks in the roadway at another part of the job. BetzWorks were notified before the road construction season was in full swing to increase our chances of getting the warranty work done. While they eventually did take care of one problem, the more serious one was not. Well, it's been a year since the work was done and no follow-up. When they do the work right, they are good & crew leader is accommodating of neighbors' needs but if you need follow-up work, good luck. Poor communication despite multiple outreaches from us & the County, poor planning, and they did not honor their road work warranty. read more

We had a mudslide on our mile-long road, after the "atmospheric rivers", 3 years ago. Our road got damaged. Alan Betz seemed like a, really, nice guy. He gave us a fair price. We have an easement onto another road, and I said I would talk to my neighbors and suggest that they, also, get their part of the road re-done. Betz said that he would give them a discount because all his equipment would, already, be there. So, Betz did our whole road. He did a beautiful job. Then, the road started to have spots come undone. Especially, on my neighbors' part. Betz said it was his fault, and would come back and re-do it. It's been TWO YEARS of emailing, calling, texting. With no response. The road is getting worse, potholes, etc. Neither my neighbor or I have been successful in having him get back to us and to, actually, fix his work. I do not recommend doing business with Alan Betz. read more

I hired them to do the plumbing work for a new meter and they damaged my fence, the asphalt driveway apron and their concrete work was lumpy and not flat and I can't get them to fix anything. They told me they would take care of it so I paid them, now can't get them to come back. Not a big request. Really terrible customer service and no service after they are paid. I love my new driveway!! I hired Betz paving to put down asphalt on my 1/4 mile long gravel driveway winding through the redwood forest, and they did an amazing job! They bid my project considerably better than several of the other bids I had gotten and they delivered quickly and beautifully. I was impressed with how Luke organized all of the rock and asphalt truck deliveries and navigated the many challenges of getting everything up here expeditiously. A shout goes out also to those truck drivers who BACKED their asphalt laden trucks up this winding and steep driveway! Very impressive driving. The guys working with Luke obviously have done this many many times, and they all seemed to respect Luke (the owner's son) working right alongside them. I had them come back and seal the driveway an a couple of months after the installation and it looks absolutely beautiful. I love that Betz is a family owned business in the local Santa Cruz community, and I really appreciate the quality of their work. The claim that the only reason I won in small claims court is because Betz could not appear is specious.We would have won anyway. Allan's emails to us clearly indicate that he knew the work was sub-par. I even offered to pay additional costs just to get it right. Betz was incapable of repairing his poor quality work. Allan Betz has taken over much of the former EarthWorks crew & equipment. Lots of experienced folk working the jobs. I had 3 projects - a grading project, a bridge hardening project and a paving project. The bridge and grading project went completely smooth, and Betz Works even lowered the price on the grading when it went faster than expected. The road, however, was extremely challenged. This was expected to be a 1 day, 120 tons of asphalt project. There were power problems as the asphalt plant, then further delays and equipment problems. Some of the asphalt was not able to be compacted sufficiently. That being said, the measure of a business is not when things go great, but when things go wrong. Betz absorbed an extra 10 tons of asphalt costs, as well as returning for FOUR visits to try to make things right. There is no way they made money on this deal. Additionally Betz assured us they would repair any future failure of the asphalt if it had any issues. I will follow up on this review if it turns out to be necessary. read more

What stood out about Earthworks was their customer service. Every single person we had contact with was amazing. Rick made us feel like valued customers, even before the project started. We've used Earthworks twice to seal our driveway- never again. The first time a truck left a deep gouge from its tires MONTHS after the work was completed and it wasn't a particularly hot day, nor had it been. This time we were mindful of trying to let it set, to see if that helped, so there was NO driving at all on it for 10 days. (We were told it was ok to drive on it 48 hrs after completion). On days 12 and 15, a car and a small light truck left deep gouges, and again, not even hot weather. I believe that Earthworks uses cheap materials that don't set up well; this is how they can offer lower prices, no doubt. If AJ's had their lot sealed and it was filled with cars a couple days later, why was our surface so funky after 2 weeks?! If you have a home you take pride in, you'd best avoid using Earthworks to seal your driveway. read more

I have not hired this company or had any previous dealings. They are working on a group home in the neighborhood and hauling many loads with large dump trucks, some hauling a long trailer behind. This morning I looked out and saw a large truck and trailer turning around in Coyote Canyon and Fairway Dr. At the time there were about 20 quail feeding in my yard. I went outside and told the driver this was a private road and he shouldn't turn around here. He laughed and continued doing his turn around right below the sign that says "No Turn Around". He laughed at me quickly backing out and almost hitting 20 quail. He then popped the clutch and peeled out as he left, laughing the entire time. I was a bit incensed so I went down the road where they were working. Three workers were there as well as the driver. I told him what had just transpired. He laughed at me and said he couldn't read the sign. I told him he couldn't drive without being able to read. He had a totally dismissive attitude about my concerns and only made more fun of me. I asked him not to turn around there anymore as it is a private road and not his special turn around. As I was leaving I saw that he had parked the truck and trailer half way into the roadway. If he pulled the truck down the road a little way it would be out of the way of traffic but I guess that was too inconvenient for him. I called the company in Capitola and was put on hold. I didn't feel like waiting any longer so I hung up. I would never hire a company with such arrogant employees who disrespect the neighbors and neighborhood with their lack of concern about their actions in our neighborhood. read more

EARTHWORKS Paving was recently contracted to repave several "streets" at my storage unit. As is the norm in today's world, they went over-schedule and over-budget. Rare is the contractor that doesn't do that nowadays. That is not my complaint. My complaint is with the amount of damage done, the poor excuse for repairs on the damage, and the fact that the place has more drainage issues now than before they repaved! I have rented units here for over 11 years. Drainage was never a problem. The heavy equipment used (definitely overkill, the operators could not maneuver around the buildings without hitting the buildings) had broken several columns between the doorways. The columns were "patched" but rest assured, in an earthquake, they will be the first to fail. The painter's paint bled down all over the new asphalt. (Some of the patches were not repainted at all!) The asphalt now has many ponds in it. Workers have returned twice to fix the ponding problems. The pond in front of my unit only got larger each time they "fixed" it! C'mon, you could do better with a shovel and a level. Honestly, it doesn't even have to rain now and I have a pond in front of my unit. The night dew is enough to create a pond! When the wind blows, water gets into the unit. That NEVER happened before EARTHWORKS showed up here! One of the lights was knocked off the building and they never came back to replace it at all! How do these people stay in business? read more

If you're running late or there's a scheduling problem please just text or call me so I can move on with my day. At this point he's an hour late with no text or phone call. I called the main office they seem to think he just forgot about me and had just left the office headed somewhere? They gave me his direct cell phone number with no apologies. Since the most recent review is nearly 2 years old I felt compelled to provide a more recent one. I originally hired Earthworks for a job in Aptos, CA. This included paving and creating a V-cut for drainage. The job was done on time and within budget. I am very satisfied with its work. Subsequently I hired them for my personal residence also in Aptos. A simple job to slurry or top coat the driveway. I was told it would last 3-5 YEARS. In fact it lasted only about 5 MONTHS. After some wrangling and insisting that they re-do the work they finally agreed. The work took less than one day and we stayed off the driveway for 5 DAYS even though they said we only needed to stay off for 2-3 days. Long story short, the re-do lasted less than one MONTH. It's now worse than ever. The bottom line for residential work is that Earthworks is not the company to do the job. Simply terrible. read more

We recently had Earthworks come out and look at our driveway, which I thought was in poor enough shape to need repaving. Jim came out and informed us that all that was needed was a resealing, and sent an estimate via email the next day. We accepted, and asked that the resealing be done on a certain week when we were out of town. They said they would try, but needed to coordinate the job with others so it might not be able to be done that week. They were able to get it done while we were away, and we came back to a great job done on the driveway. Very professional, very reasonable, very responsive. read more

A year and a half ago Earthworks repaired about 1/4 mile of 48 year old private road which had had problems from its beginning. The work was thorough, fast and very reasonably priced. My favorite aspect of the job is that they put on asphalt overlay 8" thick in some places- our road looks like it's going to have a long, smooth life. read more

Our La Selva Beach Asta/Arbolado Road Association hired Earthworks to bring our private roads up to snuff after being neglected for several years. Also, several neighbors decided to contract with them for improvements to their road surfaces and driveway areas. They completed all work within two days and everyone is extremely pleased with their finished product. All I can say is that they did a spectacular job for the road Association and our neighbors. Our common's driveway was over 30 years old and crumbling away. Oak tree roots were lifting areas and water run-off during the rainy season was causing problems. The old asphalt needed to be removed and replaced; a big job. Many different grades needed to be addressed. Earth Works was so easy and accommodating to work with. I was the home owner's project manager and I love working with people who take pride in doing good work and pleasing their customers. The job took 2 full days with some return time for extra clean-up. I have high standards and felt very taken care of by the crew, especially the crew chief, Jesse. The owner, Rick called right after the job was completed to check for my satisfaction. The job needed a few small adjustments and a bit more clean-up. Earthworks just finished paving our private road on Hardin Way in Soquel. The crew was amazing and responsive to the needs of individual homeowners. This included over twenty individual households, with several neighbors contracting for improvements to their driveway areas. It was unusually hard getting bids from paving contractors for work in the mountains last year because of the amount of road damage from the winter before. Earthworks came on site and provided a bid promptly. Our project was not straight forward and required several discussions/adjustments before beginning work. Earthworks sent knowledgeable supervisors on site to review and make changes to the plan. Once the work began, everything went quickly and smoothly. The work significantly exceeded our expectations, the crew was skillful and friendly, and the final invoice was two thousand dollars below the bid price. The driveway they replaced was a steep curving narrow and uneven road down to a cut-de-sac. There was a hump at the top that scraped the undercarriage of any low vehicle. We had tree roots popping up and a couple of places the previous pavement had totally failed. Although it took some time for them to get to us, Rick and his office staff kept right to their word about when it would be done, kept in touch with us and were very patient when some of the 4 households had questions. They replaced what had been 1 inches of pavement with a wonderful smooth 4 inch paved road and strengthened a couple of soft spots. They smoothed out the hump so any vehicle can drive right over it. They even spread a little pavement by the mailbox in an area that had gotten full of ruts. They had to dig out some soft earth and didn't charge extra for all of these extra items. Due to the narrow and steep part of the road, one of the machines damaged our fence, they got right on a fence contractor to come and replace that fence. This is still being completed, but Rick and his crew have been so fabulous that I have not any doubt this will be done as well. read more
