I never write negative reviews, but I think other brides deserve a heads up! I booked with Nia based on her reviews and the photos on her website. I am high-risk so I decided to pass on the trial and book a session for our engagement photos. I was reasonably pleased with my makeup and decided maybe we had a miscommunication about my hair. Since it was too late to make a change, I made the best of it and thank goodness our photographer got some great photos. After that experience I booked a trial for the wedding to be sure we were on the same page. Again I tried to make the best of it, but my hair was a disaster! I showed her photos and attempted to intervene. When she saw I was upset she tried to argue that the style might not be possible with my hair. Trying to work through it I returned home and redid the hairstyle myself to share photos with my hair. She made no attempt to problem solve or reassure me. When I finally cancelled, she literally replied "no worries" but despite the month of advanced warning and all my efforts to work through things she still refused to refund my deposit. So disappointing. If you want anything other than the simplest hair style, stay away! Praying I can find someone better in time and hoping it will be a funny story some day. Where do I begin!? Nia is an incredibly kind, punctual, and vibrant person. Nia did my hair and makeup for my engagement pictures and my wedding. She is very fun and energetic and does a great job hyping you up on your special day! She also did my bridesmaids' and my mother-in-law's hair and makeup on the big day. Everyone's hair and makeup lasted the entire day- we got married on a warm, sunny day in September and didn't experience any makeup sweating off. Nia was the first vendor I contacted once I got engaged! It was more than a year out and I didn't have a date set yet but I knew I wanted her! I can't say enough great things about my experience with Nia regarding my wedding hair and makeup trial. For months I was undecided on what look I wanted and really spent hours stressing over it. I would describe my experience in three folds: Pre-wedding: Nia was very responsive from the get go. I equate that as a very trustworthy quality. The second someone goes MIA, I start to question if i should start shopping for another vendor. Nia made sure all my emails were responded to, big or small. She also asked me to email pictures of myself with and without make up so she knew what she was working with... very smart. TIP: I also made sure to find a make up artist that was in the neighborhood b/c 1) less/no travel fees, 2) less chance to be late to the day of... For the trial, I scheduled it so that it would be on the same day as my engagement shoot. The professional that she is, she left ample time to work just in case if I didn't like anything, she could adjust it. She does provide lashes and airbrushing, but I found her lashes to be much more "dramatic" than what i was comfortable with. I just bought my own $4 lashes which worked perfectly for the day of the wedding. The airbrushing has some SERIOUS staying power and it doesn't have SPF (for those who are allergic). As long as you don't go rubbing your face all crazy, the airbrushing wasn't bad at all, (my friends warned me about flaking or looking too dry, but it was not a problem for me) If you know its going to be HAWT on the day of your outdoor ceremony, I highly recommend airbrushing over foundation/powder. After the trial, Nia took picture of my face and hair, before and after, so I could see how the make up photographed. She promptly emailed them, and asked for feedback. I like it when vendors open the conversation. After like 5-6 hours of being in Carmel for our E-shoot, lo and behold, the make up was all there and no racoon eyes!!! My hair had stayed in place despite it being windy and all the costume changes. Now that's staying power my friend... My recommendations would be, bring pictures of stuff you like, and don't like. Bring your own lashes if you're picky. Wedding: Nia promtply gave me a call that morning, told me exactly when I could expect her, and they arrived at our hotel room as expected. She and her assistant (who did hair) worked efficiently for me and 7 bridesmaids (yeah 8 girls~ crazy...) I originally thought it would take around 1 hr per BM and a little longer for the bride, but I think she was able to finish in around 4-4.5 hrs. The environment she was working in was somewhat unpredictable since the lighting in the hotel room sucked. But after we got our make up done, we ran out side to check out the overall color of our faces and found that everything worked out well, in dim lighting and natural lighting. TIP: I think the best philosophy is that you need to know exactly what you want, know what looks good on you. If you like a smokey eye look on jessica alba, but know that you don't look good with smokey eyes, then chances are that a professional most likely can't make that look fly on you. Thinking that a professional can change the face you were born with is just not logical... just sayin! LOL! 3 my of BM's were not very experienced with eyelashes or make up in general, brought their own thinking that it would look ok, but turns out it made them feel very insecure and they started to freak out for a couple of hours while the other girls' make up came out "well". They hid in the other bathroom complaining, cutting their eyelashes, removing make up, making it look worse, until the lashes started to fall off. Thank goodness they were one of the first ones to go, because at the end of all the hair and make up, Nia was able to re-do their eyelashes with some extra pairs that another BM had brought which were not as dramatic, fixed their eye make up and everything eventually ended well. If you don't like it, you're going to do everyone a favor by speaking up, so SPEAK UP! Overall: Nia's strongest quality has to be that she is super responsive and responsible especially for someone who doesn't do this full time. She immediately answers emails, no weird cryptic messages that require all this back and forth, everything had been crystal clear. I booked her MONTHS (i think like 7 months?) before my wedding. I thought her prices were fairly competitive, compared to some other places I was inquiring with. But her professionalism made me go with her compared to other vendors that might have saved me a few bucks b/c someone reliable was the top criteria to me, personally. why the -1 star? On the day of my wedding, I decided it would be most flattering for me to go w/ a Kardashian esque long big wavy curl style, i wanted a little more volume, so then the hair stylist (not Nia) started to tease my hair ALL OVER the place... so my nicely curled hair suddenly went from being fly away free, to fly away city. so i had to do some damage control afterwards. ACK! maybe that was my mistake for not being clear... But would i use Nia again? DEFINITELY!! read more

Nia canceled on me 4 days before my trial! I can not review her actual work, since she never actually did my hair and makeup. I had Nia on the books for a while pending a trial. Since the trial cost money, I wanted to wait for a big night out, so I could actually utilize the neat hair and makeup for something. I decided a reunion was perfect. 4 days before the trial, 2 months before the wedding, I got an email saying "sorry i'm not available for your wedding, so you probably dont want to keep the trial appt." WTF?? Not only was I a bride now scrambling to find a new hair/makeup person for the most popular month of weddings, but I had FOUR DAYS to find someone so they could do my trial for the reunion. She did recommend a friend, and she did fit me in, but she was very very slow and only did makeup on the side, not as a career. I just think canceling with only 4 days to spare in unprofessional. She also did not give me a reason for canceling, other than she was no longer available. If you bail on a bride, I think you need a better reason. read more

I had an appointment with Nia this past Saturday. I'm having a destination wedding so I wanted to get the right look and learn to apply it myself, since it's a risk trying someone new right on wedding day. The makeup lesson was so much fun! Nia is professional, warm and friendly, and really encouraging! Going in I felt kind of awkward because my makeup application skills are so rudimentary (and sometimes makeup people can be a little snobby?) but Nia was the opposite and made me feel really comfortable and I was completely at ease. I felt pampered! My friends were wowed by the result and said I look "so beautiful, and just like you but heightened" which is exactly what I wanted. Not overdone, yet glamorous and elegant. I found Nia through another friend that was getting married earlier in the year and immediately set up a trial. With wedding season getting into full force I knew that I needed to get a jump on it since Hair and Make up tend to book up really fast. Since I'm not one to wear make up (I have horrible skin), I wasn't sure what to expect getting my make up done professionally.The trial was wonderful, Nia is professional and was great with communication. Nia was the make-up artist and hair stylist extraordinaire for my daughter's wedding. The day prior to the wedding Nia's assistant had to go out of town due to a family emergency. Nia called me to explain she would be working solo and wanted to assure me things would go smoothly. The call was totally unnecessary. Nia arrived promptly and I was amazed at how efficient, calm and professional she was knowing she must do double duty. Throughout the entire morning you would have thought Nia was part of the bridal party she was so easy going and having fun with us as she was transforming us. When all was done with time to spare Nia was still smiling and making sure we were all happy, doing final touch ups, and most touchups were because Nia wanted them, we all learned Nia is a real Perfectionist. For quality, wedding photos started at 1pm and the reception ended at 10pm. Every person's make up and hair looked as incredible at 10pm as it did at 1pm. And, the wedding photos proofs before touchups - you could not see any skin flaws and the makeup looked so natural. I'm actually surprised to see all the good reviews here considering our most recent experience. Nia did bridesmaid makeup for all the bridesmaids and I think it was her mom that tag-teamed hair. This may be long since I want to give you details on the reasons for my lower rating. MAKEUP Makeup was overall much better than hair so I'll start with that. I hardly wear makeup so I asked for a more natural look and it came out overall pretty natural. My friend wears much more makeup and likes the dramatic look so she went with that. The good thing is that Nia is good at accommodating both those requests. The down-side was that she made us look slightly more orange. And in the light, people told me I looked two-toned where the airbrush stopped. Argh. I had to have someone else try to fix this. One of the other bridesmaids was more obvious and she actually went back and asked Nia to lighten her up. Nia's response was "I can't, I would have to re-do your makeup all over again." So of course, the other bridesmaid just dealt with it instead of making a scene. After all, this was not our day. But, we did need to have someone else try to fix the severity of the situation. HAIR Only one of seven girls loved her hair. Sadly, the girl that loved her hair style, showed the stylist a picture to which she responded that she couldn't do it (at least she was honest about that), so the bridesmaid said "Just do whatever you want then." The bride had asked us to spend time looking for pictures of hairstyles that we wanted for her big day. So we all scoured the internet to find pictures of the hairstyles that would work best for each of us. Sadly, she did not take these into consideration at all. And at least 3 of the bridesmaid actually had someone else work on their hair AFTER we got our hair done so that we could get our hair to look more like the pictures we showed. Here is my experience: I showed the stylist two pictures. I told her I wanted a braid going down the side (first picture). I told her I wanted side-swept bangs and a side ponytail (on the left side to off-set our right-sided one shoulder dress) with curls (second picture). I gave her advanced warning that my hair does not hold a curl well. I know my hair and that is why I give hairstylists the heads up. They usually say don't worry, we'll use lots of product, etc. She starts doing my hair and I notice that she is putting the ponytail on the right side, so I told her the correct side. So she starts fixing that. When she is done, I go look. No braids on the side. No side-swept bangs. No curls with a side-ponytail. It's a side bun..... I go back and show her the picture again and her response is "Well your hair won't stay curly." *sigh* CONCLUSION: Nia can give you the makeup style that you want, but with a slightly orange tint that someone else has to attempt to fix. As for hair, that is a complete fail where they did not even look at the pictures we showed because their final product looked nothing like the pictures. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that the way that they were unwilling to try to fix things when we were unhappy will lead me to never book Beyond Beauty for my own events. read more
