I stayed at Century Plaza. Beyond Coffee was in the lobby. They offer coffee, pastries, sandwiches, salads and gelato. Prices are very reasonable. A 16oz Americano with 4 shots was around $3.50. The pistachio gelato was excellent as well. read more

Had a really good lunch here! I got the caponata panini, a brownie gelato sandwich, and a cup of rooibos tea. The sandwiches are premade and sit in a case until they're grilled, but nonetheless the focaccia was fresh and the filling of roasted veggies and cheese was great. The gelato sandwich was good - raspberry gelato between two slices of brownie. Hard to make a judgment about the quality of the gelato itself based on the brick of it in the sandwich, but it totally did the job for a sandwich and the raspberry flavour seemed natural, not overly sweet, and the brownie was nice and moist. Decent tea, nothing out of the ordinary there. My total was about $25, about average value for downtown. The place is located under a hotel and it doesn't have a lot of character, but it's spacious and quiet, and the counter chairs were super comfortable, so for my taste it's a nice relaxing spot even if it is generic. I told the cashier that I wanted a small Matcha latte with skim milk. She typed the regular size without the skim milk. I caught the mistake and I repeated my order. She acted like she did not know (she asked me "So it was not the regular tea?"). Also, they charged us the fee for the single use cup while they had glasses for dine in. That means they wanted to charge the customers more. The Matcha latte had an inch of foam; it was a lot of foam for any size. The matcha taste was weak and it was watery. The chocolate chip mint gelato looked bright green which looked inauthentic, and the hazelnut gelato tasted weak as compared to other gelato places. The coffee gelato tasted like caramel and it looked like a mix of chunks. We needed to ask for another flavour because it tasted stale. When we asked for another spoon for the gelato, the server looked irritated. We did not know why but he saw that there were the two of us. Perhaps they were cheap. Convenient hotel coffee shop- but like the name implies, they do more than just coffee here, with a surprisingly extensive range of breakfast and lunch options. Pastries were nicely flaky and well-priced for the size, and they use Illy coffee. Interestingly, they seemed to have about as many customers visiting for gelato as for coffee. Service was a bit on the slow side during my visits. Note that hotel guests can receive a $5 daily credit for waiving housekeeping services. read more

The absolute best part about this cafe is that they serve illy coffee, which is basically the only reason they have three stars. They also serve a terrific Salmon Salad sandwich but its really overpriced ($11+) but that's always how it goes when you are located in the bottom of a hotel. The service here is about as dull as a butter knife, there is literally no wow factor, customer recognition or enjoyment on the faces of the employees. I feel like the ticket dispenser at the sky train station is happier to see my money. Often times it looks like they are being micro managed and the speed of service suffers because of it. If I ever see a line deeper than two people, I go somewhere else. They have water in a giant fruit laden urn that you can enjoy whilst you inevitably wait for your order. There is also an ice cream freezer for the dispensing of Gelato. The seating inside is relatively nice and (Vancouver style) bright, suitable for people watching. read more

I saw this reviewed on the front page of yelp on August 4 and decided to book mark this as part of my 100 coffee shops in 52 weeks challenge (although I am well past that by now). They service Illy bean which has slowly become my favorite. The sad thing is that they ran out of sugar free vanilla syrup. Customer service was good and prices were decent. There isn't much of an ambiance but it serves the purpose for hotel guests. Wifi is shoot you but no need to login. The few desserts they had looked amazing. read more

Nice coffee bar in the Century Plaza Hotel. Nothing special, but the coffee is good and the muffins look great. Also many workers from the neighboured hospital come around. Good sign. And: it's no Starbucks, like on every other Corner in the City. So, it's also a good alternative to the usual stuff. read more

This coffee shop in the heart of downtown Vancouver is super close to my work. I have frequented it many times for coffee and treats. Service has always been fast and the staff super friendly. They often have a jug of fruit flavoured water to serve yourself while waiting for your coffee. There's a good amount of seating, individual seats by the window or smaller tables with movable chairs to accommodate a various sized groups. I'm not a huge fan of their gelato, once I ordered the bubble gum flavour and it was too syrupy in parts, like as if there was something with the texture of corn syrup in there when I don't think it should have been like that. But there are so many delicious baked goods that I don't even mind that the gelato doesn't float my boat - I'll still go there read more

This is one of the few coffee shops that I've found which serve illy coffee. I always get their Americano, which is rich and well-flavored. I've heard that their egg salad sandwich is good and is on my to-try list for next time. They also serve gelato ice cream, which is a little odd for a coffee shop... But hey! For a coffee shop located in a pretty standard looking hotel (hardly the must have qualities of any coffee blog), it's a decent enough location, especially as Burrard street - on the Northern end at least - isn't brimming with coffee choices. It's cozy, with comfy and high-top window seating (my two must haves), and with access to the hotel kitchen it has a better than average array of snacks and light meals. This place should go out of business. Their salmon sandwich is good which is why I went back more than once, but their customer service is just terrible. They keep you waiting there to order while the staff chat. They actively try not to look at you, despite you waiting there, so they can finish their conversation. I had also parked outside in their 5 minute temporary parking spot, hoping to get a sandwich and leave, only to be stopped by the doorman later to say I can't park there anymore. When asked why, it was because the manager Steve said I couldn't. When I went to the manager Steve to ask why it says you can park there for 5 minutes, but I wasn't allowed to, he mentions something about Impark calling him, which makes no sense to the average customer who just wants to pick up his food and leave. Once again, go to this place if you want ok food but terrible service. Chat with doorman and manager Steve about conflicting messages about their parking. read more

Despite its name, I actually came to this place for their red velvet volcano sundae from Vanfoodster's Sundae Challenge and not for a cup of coffee. The sundae was alright. It had chunks of brownies, some nuts, cream cheese gelato, chocolate syrup and two raspberries. Waited in line for about 5-10 mins and there were only one couple ahead of me. They didn't have much desserts to choose from so we just stick with our sundae. Apparently, the server wasn't too happy about that as he didn't even bother to serve us our sundae and just placed it on the counter and called us over to pick it up ourselves. read more

Oatmeal made with milk without it posted on the menu?!?! Wtf...... recipe for disaster thanks for ruining my day!!!!! Lactose intolerant.... And what if I was vegan and just ate the oatmeal without knowing. Since I'm here reviewing I will add that the drip coffee sucks, the stuff in my hotel is better and that doesn't say very much. Good value in a small gelato, I got straciatella - delicious! Espresso was delicious with plenty of crema on top. Definitely worth a try! (Only improvement would be not using Styrofoam cups for eat in gelato, but it's definitely not a deal breaker) read more

Review of the espresso only: Good, but not amazing at all. Short latte was only a single shot with good foam and ok crema automatically pulled far too long until it was translucent, thin and milky. Still, better than Starbucks. read more
