I am writing this review to warn others about my experience with Larry's Freewheeling. A seller on Craigslist purchased a Marin Fairfax 1 from this shop and sold it to me as "like new." When I picked up the bike, a Larry's technician certified it as ready to ride after a tune-up. Within minutes of riding it, the gears began slipping badly. The chain came off entirely shortly after. I took the bike to another shop, which diagnosed worn cassette, crankset, and chain -- components that don't wear out from minimal use. Either Larry's failed to notice this during multiple tune-ups, or they noticed and said nothing. Either way, the bike was certified as rideable when it was not. When I called Larry's to report this, rather than taking any responsibility, a staff member became belligerent and told me I was "ignorant." That response alone tells you everything you need to know about how this shop treats customers when something goes wrong. I ended up paying $180 in repairs to make the bike actually rideable. Incompetent work and rude staff when confronted about it. Go elsewhere. read more

I do not recommend this bike shop out of all bike shops this is the worst one I came here with my bmx bike to fix my seat they Didnt even fix it correctly why? Great customer service, came here for a bike repair on Sunday morning, the line wasn't too long about two people in front of me, and left very happy with their fair pricing and trustworthiness. I don't know much about bikes and had recently purchased a used Specialized Dolce road bike for quarantine. The gears stopped shifting on one side and I heard clicking sounds so I brought it in after a bike ride, they looked at it, rode it and evaluated it for me on the spot. He showed me how to check for chain wear and showed me exactly where it was worn down. Also mentioned the wear on the tires which I knew as well, said it didn't need replacing today but would need to be replaced soon before the inner tube gets damaged . For the chain and cassette replacement, I paid $70 and they fixed it on the spot, pumped up my tires, adjusted my gear shifter on the left side. Compared to other bike shops I visited when looking to purchase a bike, I didn't feel as if they were trying to sell me more unnecessary services, bells and whistles. I take my bike here all the time. They are super fair with pricing and have a ton of options for assoriores. I tend to meet other riders, and we share information about our individual experiences. The only two things I can say that are bad about this place are that when they are busy, they get overwhelmed. And with it come to simple fixes they make up prices. I have had a situation where they are thighting my pegs, and each time, I have been charged a different number. I have learned to keep the receipt on my phone and just reference it when I go. I have a bike that I brought in -- about a 15-year-old Cannondale high-end aluminum frame touring bike that I wanted to have given a tune-up, because I was having trouble shifting particularly. This bike looks practically brand new and visually is in excellent condition. First I want to innovation bike store on 106th Street. So there was one guy working in there and he immediately said that he needs to replace the front shifters even though they looked basically brand new. He quoted me $195 prior to tax for this work. This really didn't seem right to me so I said no thank you and went over to Larry freewheeling on 110th Street which is right near my home. So Larry immediately said that because the bike was sitting around for a long time it needed degreaser into the shifters which would probably fix them. He offered to do this for no charge. However, I ended up going with Larry who for the about the same money to replace the shifters, he got the bike working completely correctly, gave me new Kevlar tires and new inner tubes, wiped down the whole bike. I was very happy that the shifters did not need replacing as they still look amazing and now they still work amazing! Bike shop closest to my apartment. I ended up shipping a bike here to be put together and tuned up. Bike arrived about 3 days ago and I had to pester them in order to prioritize my bike. After 2 more days of calling in, they had it built, cleaned and tuned up. However when I went on my test run, I noticed that a few parts were loose so I ran back to get everything else tightened. Great experience here - they were open before opening and had exactly what I wanted, a clip-on fender for my road bike in anticipation of rain tomorrow. I turned 45 last week and bought my first bike. Let me preface this by saying I do not know how to ride a bike. Not really. I "learned" as an adult, but the stress of my fear of falling, and the attitude of people not taking my fear seriously, was enough to turn me off. Except there's now a pandemic, and there are fewer cars on NYC streets, and I probably should bike to work now instead of taking public transportation. Low to the ground so I won't be too scared of falling, light enough so that I won't be afraid of getting crushed under the weight of it... (i didn't say my fears were rational) I went to a few bike shops, but Larry's was our last and best stop. There was a line on a Saturday and we had to wait, but it was well worth it. And just in time, too, because they only had 2 folding bikes left. I explained what I was looking for, and Rex was amazing. He listened to me and patiently addressed my concerns, repeated himself as many times as I needed him to, was super attentive, etc. I felt taken care of, ya know? Sloppy and bad service. I came in to have my rear tube changed. Specifically requested to have the tire checked for debris. $15 and 15 minutes later I get the bike back COVERED in grease. Fast forward a few miles and the tire is flat again. Apparently the "mechanic" couldn't be bothered (didn't know how to?) to check the tire. Lazy, sloppy, and amateurish establishment. I got a flat while riding in the park and not being familiar with the neighborhood I had to decide whether to spend the emergency $20 on a cab or try to find a bike shop. I was lucky to find Larry, he got me back on the road in no time. Everyone in his shop was great. They offer rentals, new and a few used bikes as well as kids bikes, trikes, scooters and trailers. I'd go back just to hang out with Larry. Possibly the most informative tube installation ever. Someone asked him about a bike he had taken in on trade and he recommended they not buy it...not stable enough. What a disappointing local business. We are in a global pandemic that is either ruining the health of people or KILLING on a large scale, and the employees are unwilling to wear face coverings. NYC is under a mask mandate for business's and the employees are not only risking their health, but even worse (and frankly disgusting) risking the health of their customers. I really do not understand why the employees at Larry's will not take the health or their customers as seriously as this public health crisis is. This is not a one time occurrence as well! I have been by Larry's several time in the past 2 years, and no one at this business ever wears a face covering. If you frequent Larry's you are not only risking your health and well being, but the lives of the employees and other customers. As a local business, I would love to support this shop, but doing so puts me at risk, and there are plenty of other bike shops in the neighborhood that do take this health crisis seriously and value their customers health and well being seriously. BEWARE AND ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!! I am 100% positive that the employees at larry's certainly do not care about the health and well being of their customers or the health and well being of our local community. As I write this the Omicron variant is RIPPING through New York City like never seem before. So dissatisfied, disappointed, and utterly disgusted. Today I got my first brand new bike in 33 years and I was fortunate enough to get it from Larry's. The friendly, knowledgeable staff helped me feel comfortable making a fairly large purchase and Larry even gave me the bell off of his own bike when they were out of ones that would look best on my new one. I found this place on a Yelp search. I went in for a small repair but was ready to (a) wait in line as it was a Sunday morning (b) leave the bike there and have to return to pick up (c) pay a lot for the services. I avoided bike stores for repairs before finding Larry's although I love cycling. Most of bike stores were not only expensive for repairs but also complained something about my not expensive bikes. There was no reason to feel uncomfortable before paying so I did most of repairs by myself. It was coincident to find Larry's. I was just looking for a tool, and I felt inspiration that the bike store was just right for me while having conversation wit them so I decided to put my bike for repair rather than fixing by myself. I was right. They treated customers real valuable with friendly service. They were totally professional and accurate on repairs. Larry's superior management and supervising skills. I'm usually kind of an asshole when typing up a review. Always with the glibness and cheap shots. It's a huge problem. But not this time. I'm being serious here. So put down that single-origin pour over coffee, glazed Carrara marble cronut, twice-fired locally-sourced micro kale sprout sandwich or whatever, and fucking pay attention. So, I recently brought my hybrid bike in to Larry's Freewheeling after some lowlife degenerates stripped the bicycle cockpit, taking the handlebar, brake/shifters and cables. Three days later my little pony was back up and running, smooth as you like. Larry filled in the hex nuts with solder, to help discourage a repeat incident. My little pony (not steed, I'm not a douchebag) was riding so nicely that it was an easy decision to bring my road bike in for a tune-up. This bike had developed a chronic creak that a previous bike shop had been unable to isolate and fix. No problem at Larry's. Mechanics Pedro, Eric and Xavier took turns looking at this and eventually figured it out. No attitude, no passing the buck. The latter is a common response at many bike shops, where mechanics will blame the owner for poor basic maintenance or the bike for not being fancy enough. None of that here. These guys just listened to me and to my bike, and did a fantastic job resolving the issue. In fact, every single person I've talked to here is pretty awesome. Joe, Jesse, Pedro, Eric, Xavier and a couple others whose names I didn't catch, they're all polite and attentive, simply professional all around. And Larry is a really nice guy, just a big crackup who will do good by you. I live in Inwood, pretty far off, but Larry's will be my 'local' bike shop from now on. If you're looking to buy, there's a decent selection of bikes to suit most tastes. There's also a sizeable rental fleet for those who want a nice ride in nearby Central Park or neighbouring Morningside Heights/Manhattan Valley. My only experience so far has been with bike servicing, and I recommend Larry's for that with zero hesitation. I'm totally being serious here. read more

These folks live up to the hype. I was referred here by one of my bosses at the hospital and he could not say enough good things about this place. 1) Staff: Friendly, funny, helpful, knowledgeable 2) Prices: Cheaper than competitors for the service I needed (assembling a bike I bought online) 3) Stock: Not sure, but they have lots of things with two wheels lining their walls. They come in all shapes and sizes. Heard a bunch of stories how there was a stigma against folks who go to their LBS (I just learned that this means Local Bike Store) to assemble an internet purchased bike, but I encountered no such thing here. In fact the staff were more than forthcoming in teaching me how to change my bike from single speed to fixie mode. Of course if you know your stuff you're laughing in my face right now, but I am a bike noob. When I arrived with my friends the following day I was not disappointed! In fact I was even more impressed with the level of professionalism and kindness shown by his staff,-particularly the gentlemen that gave out the bikes. He actually made recommendations and allowed us to ride a few feet to test the fit. Since I have long legs he was able to give me a bike that was a perfect fit. I brought in an old Giant RC1 that was just dragging along. I wanted more speed and they suggested new "slick" tires and Pedro, one of the mechanics did a fantastic job lubing and detailing the bike. As a matter of fact, I asked the salesman Joe, if Pedro had replaced the derailleur because it was so shiny and new looking. Nope, just a thorough cleaning like she needed so bad! Top Notch! I bought my Road Bike elsewhere. The other shop does maintenance and I find myself right back there. Now that I'm much more into cycling, I appreciate the attention to detail that Larry and his employees have. I even purchased bikes for my kids there. He's fair, knowledgeable and dedicated to his customers and craft. And, being right next to Central Park is a HUGE plus! They get busy at times, but you won't feel ignored.
