Nate is the salesman from Soho I bought my first bike from! (They have closed the Soho bike store and Nate works at the Vanderbilt, Bklyn store now.) After telling Nate I'd like a replacement with the same price, back rack (so my Ortlieb panniers fit correctly), foot treadles, locking pins for the wheels and seat Nate said "The only thing is I am pretty sure you have a stem extender to get the stem a little higher. Is that correct?" I almost fell over that he remembered!!! I bought my bike yesterday May 9, 2020 from Nate despite living at 43rd Street and 9th Ave in NYC. I rode (flew) it back over Manhattan bridge and can't describe how happy I am with the service and purchase. read more

I have had pleasant visits here, but there is one sales person in particular that is always rude. I needed a few things and had questions about the difference between types of cleats, options for bike pumps, etc. but he seemed put out to have to explain anything. I ended up purchasing a new kind of air system that I just tried for the first time and it completely punctured my tube. I regret not sticking to the mechanism I know, but he made this seem really easy and simple--turns out it's not! He also sold me on a small usb charging light that he said was easy and versatile and inexpensive. I charged it for a day and guess what! it doesn't work at all . I needed a new tire but had already replaced my tube. He charged me for a tube and a tube change anyway --luckily I happened to look at the receipt before leaving and he refunded me for the price of the tube but said the cost of the labor for changing it was the same as the cost of the labor for changing the tire (pretty sure I paid for that twice). My last issue with this place is that (at least if you're on the sales side of the store) they don't let you know ahead of time how much labor will cost. I figured tacking on labor for replacing my handle bar tape would be minimal given I was already paying for the tire to be replaced and the labor for that was $13. The tape itself cost $20 but the labor cost $25! If I'd known that I definitely would have done it myself. All in all, they tend to have things in stock and the people that actually do the labor and most sales associates are perfectly nice and helpful. But! This one person in particular (who I think may be the manager? Everyone seems vaguely afraid of him) is very rude, careless, and sold me a broken light, and because the shop is so small, you're about as likely to have to interact with him as anyone else. If there's another shop you can go to, I would try there first. read more

The rear brake on my Giant Revolt Advanced 0 suddenly stopped working, so I brought it to Bicycle Habitat on Vanderbilt Ave in Brooklyn. They recommended a bleed but it ended up being a failed hydraulic oil diaphragm. Eric (Erik?) the repair tech told me what part to buy online (Shimano has had severe supply-chain issues so they couldn't order direct) and when the part finally came in from Taiwan I brought the bike back and the part and Eric fixed it up quickly. I had called around to almost every high-end bike shop looking for the part and for help, and they all pretty much told me I would need a whole new shifter/brake lever. The info I got from Eric saved me at least $300! I will continue to make this shop my first stop for service! read more

I'd consider the heavy tone of entitlement and overreactions in some of the negative reviews (e.g. stroller parent ... look into anxiety meds and possibly therapy, they're great) In regards to mechanics, not a whole lot of eye contact and not a lot of speaking which makes for an awkward experience....BUT while it felt like they weren't really listening to my concerns, they were... my bike shifts like butter and the breaks feel great! Really happy with the job done, so yeah... I've had very positive experiences with at least five different sales reps so far from buying a bike that's right for me, to coming back for several accessories, apparel, and a lot of questions. One of my favorite things, coming from sales environments myself, the sales reps asked me questions to make sure I was choosing and was recommended the right bike and gear. read more

I've been there a few times for a quick flat fix. The repair guys are fairly nice people but not the most competent bunch. On one occasion the person over inflated my tire and it busted two blocks away. On another occasion, they did not tighten the quick release on the rear tire. I happened to check it before leaving, but my wheel could have popped off while riding. WTH! That is some shoddy work! I did give the store the opportunity to respond to both these incidents. I emailed them months ago and no one responded, which is pretty much on brand with their service -- they just don't give a f&*#!$. read more

The attitude here is pretentious -- if you are a regular person with a regular used bike they are going to recommend hundreds of dollars worth of repairs that you may not even need. read more

I will not be returning to Bicycle Habitat. Had a reasonable experience when having my bike assembled; was a little on the expensive side but reviews seemed to be good so I let it slide. A week or two later returned to swap out handlebars on a Single-speed bike. Bicycle Habitat quoted me $150. Again, seemed a little expensive so I asked the service head to double check quote before we went ahead. I was told the price was totally reasonable and comparable to anyone else so I had the handlebar swap done. After picking the bike up, I figured I would swing by Ride Brooklyn and have them quote for the same job. After looking at the bike and handlebars, they quoted $40-$50. I feel like an idiot for not double checking , but this was an apples-to-apples comparison and Bicycle Habitat was 3x higher! I run a customer-oriented business, and I tell all small business owners they need to charge enough money to make some profit. I never complain about 99% of prices. My story here is simply a case of Bicycle Habitat screwing the customer, which is disappointing. For repairs/service explore alternatives in the area. read more

I went to get bike for my son and myself and have some idea what bikes I was looking for and because you not aloud to go in the store you have to relay on the guys who work in shop to bring you the right bike. This WAS my go to local bike repair shop. Even with the long lines the location was perfect for me. However, I've noticed the quality of the work done, as well as the attitude of the front desk service guy isn't worth it. I've gone in looking to have my bike tires replaced as well as a tune up for a race coming up. They made a mistake with the tires and when I went to go back to have that mistake corrected the attitude I received for calling out their mistake wasn't worth it for me. In fact i still had to do work on the bike because they forgot to do something with the brakes after removing the tire. You might be busy but if you treat a loyal good customer with a disgruntled attitude because you're having a bad day that customer won't be coming back. read more

My bike chain popped off in the middle of the Manhattan bridge in the rain yesterday. After much fiddling and bike oil staining all available fingertips, I almost started to cry because it would not stay on the gears!! Then someone pulled over and said "can I help? I'm a bike mechanic." David, who works at bicycle habitat and carries a foldable bike tool around, apparently stops and helps all kind of hapless stranded people like me. I got a flat while on a ride and popped in to get the tube replaced. Though they easily and quickly changed my tube, they charged me $20, which is a lot for a tube change and didn't even bother to re-engage my brake. Fast service, but pricing is inflated. Wouldn't recommend this place. read more

Nice people but if your issue is harder to diagnose- it is likely this place may not be best fit. My bike for most of July has been barely ridable - with unusual heavy resistance. I went to this place a total of 5 times. 2 of the times one of the workers rode it and told me it feels good to them, the other times, they replaced parts that they said were rubbing against pieces of the bike that would be the cause of the heavy resistance feeling. On my 5th visit, they finally noticed the wheel tire was rubbing/ wavering against part of the frame of the bike. Their only suggestion was to get a new tire that is skinnier so less likely to rub against it. I did that (after already spending several hundred dollars there that week). After I rode off and realized that didn't fix it - I gave up going there. Next day I went to a bike shop on Bergen and they kept it for a full day (a good sign - some problems cannot be fixed in 15 minutes) and they diagnosed the problem as something with the axel. I picked it up the next day and IT WORKED. It was fixed and I almost cried. I'll go to this place for other reasons, but was a bit disappointed that I spent so much and was told several times that they felt nothing was wrong with the bike when there clearly was. read more

The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and they are excellent at repairs with great attention to detail. I also took a class at their Vanderbilt location and learned so much in a short time. I went in to get a tube and check out some helmets. When I asked for the tube, the woman behind the counter mumbled something I couldn't understand, so I asked for a tube again. She whipped around and shouted, right in my face, "LONG POINTY VALVE OR SHORT ONE," all while making really weirdly aggressive eye contact. Ok fine, whatever. I bought the tube and walked around, picking up a $75 pair of gloves and checking out some of the bikes for sale there. When I reached to try the ultegra brakes on what I thought was a bike they had for sale, she screams at me from all the way across the store "HEY DON'T TOUCH THAT! DON'T TOUCH THAT!" She had apparently decided that I was up to no good and had to be intently watched. I put the gloves back and walked out. I felt very uncomfortable and I don't at all know what I did to offend this woman. She has absolutely no business in a sales position. I won't be going back. read more

My review is mainly only for the sales staff, not service staff. I had a really good experience buying my bike here, and I mainly dealt with Nicholas. He was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable with the barrage of questions I had, and I never felt pressured to purchase anything. The other sales members I dealt with were also very proactive when I came into the store, and I enjoyed talking to all of them. The only downside is that it can get really crowded during weekends, and the shop is a little bit cramped and lacking in accessories. The bikes also come and go very quickly. read more

I have gotten a bike repaired at this store twice now, one time my gf's bike needed a new wheel and I just got a flat fixed there. Both times they have brought the bike out with more repairs than what I have brought it in with. The first time it was a $50 chain, the second a $70 tire. I am not disputing that the chain or tire needed replacing, but they haven't consulted me on either change before doing it. This feels extremely wrong and is extremely bad practice. In the latter example, I probably would have not changed my tire because it is winter, and I am only going to use the bike a couple of times. On top of this, $70 is really expensive for the cheapest tire to have, I have been biking for decades and usually low end for a tire is around $40. I am not going to come back to get any repairs at this shop, and would caution others about it. read more

What a disappointment. Walked in with a bike that needed a tuneup. Mechanic puts the bike on the mount and proclaims the rear derailleur is broken, but they will need two weeks to fix it and until then the bike is not rideable. Oh, and it needs new front brakes too. Walked out with the bike. Took it to another nearby shop which said nonsense, the derailleur looks fine, brakes are fine, get a full tuneup and chain and cassette and you'll be in business. 2 days. Avoid Bicycle Habitat at all costs. read more

I bought a $3,300 mountain bike here. there was a huge lack of communication when ordering the bike and since I've had the bike I have brought it back a couple times for maintenance/ warranty issues and the staff seam to be indifferent to your issues and act like im causing them a hassle by bringing my bike in. Tim the mechanic is argumentative for no apparent reason. I bring my bike to the shop for help not to be scolded by bike snob. After my warranty is up Ill go to 718 cycles for all my shop needs. read more

I bought my gator tires but still got a flat so I asked them to take a look. They identified that my bike wheel strip was peeling off which was causing my tube to rip. They fixed the flat but a few months later I got a flat again. I went to another shop to take a look and they noticed the wheel strip was completely missing, which is why I got a flat. I don't understand why Habitat removed the broken strip but didn't finish by adding a new strip. read more

I've never felt compelled to leave a bad review of any establishment ever, mostly because I work in the service industry and understand how difficult it can be. But this place is TOXIC. I ride my bike everyday, and unfortunately took a spill a few weeks ago. As a result of the fall, the handlebars were bent and my wheels were out of true. I took it into Bicycle habitat, because I was in the neighborhood, I'd shopped there before, and I thought they'd do a good job. I know bike shops are incredibly busy right now due to COVID, so I was happy to leave my bike at the shop for as long as they needed (mind you, these repairs are pretty quick). After a week, someone named "Tay" emailed me, asking me to come in at 10am the next day to approve the handlebars they'd chosen before the mechanics installed them. I arrived promptly the next day, waited while a few customers ahead of me in line dropped their bikes off. After a little while, an employee came out to ask what I needed. I told him that someone had emailed me asking to come in, someone named "Tay". The employee looked very confused and went back inside. He came out with a stock Specialized handlebar that had obviously just been pulled off of another bike they'd serviced. The handlebar had black tape all over it and was obviously used, but I didn't care too much. I said they were fine to throw on the bike, and I also asked if the bike had been checked for any cracks or damage from my accident. The employee said he knew nothing about anything, and he didn't seem interested in finding out. He also told me these very basic, heavily used handlebars could be installed on my bike for the bargain price of $60. Uh nah, I'm good. The employee also tells me that no one's done any other repairs on my bike in the week since I'd dropped it off, because they were waiting for me. Uh...I didn't realize that I had to be there to supervise these professional bike mechanics while they're doing their job. Anyway, I don't really want to wait another week, so I politely ask the guy why no one had even looked at my bike. He says he doesn't know--that's basically this guy's entire personality at the point, just doesn't know. I ask for my bike back, and goes in to get it. Without a word, he opens the door rolls the bike out, and as I'm thanking him for his time, he slams the door in my face, still saying nothing. Um, clueless employee turns into hostile employee in a matter of seconds. If I wasn't so infuriated, I would've been impressed, didn't think he had it in him. Thank god they didn't touch my bike, but I was mad. I popped my head into the retail side of the store to ask for some additional help. A man who I think is the real "Tay" comes out and asks what's up. I ask if he's the supervisor or the manager, again he says what's up? No Tay, I'm not going to play 100 questions with you. Anyway, Tay gave me some canned corporate responses that maybe he learned at his job orientation, like "I'm sorry you feel that way", but he was just being rude and totally passive aggressive. Eventually, when I realized talking to him was getting nowhere, I lost my cool, said a few choice words and walked away. Then I took my bike to another shop, where real people work, not weirdo animatronic robots who think they're doing you a favor by charging you a hundred bucks for crappy parts and bad service. read more

I recently had some issues with the rear derailleur on my bike. I had brought it into another shop in downtown bk that clearly ripped me off and took a week to service. Today I brought my bike into Habitat and was immediately helped by a technician by the name of Tim. He told me straight up what was wrong with the part and swapped out the derailleur (one I had brought in) right on the spot. Charged me a very reasonable price for labor and I was out on my way in less than 10 minutes. I highly recommend this shop! read more

I brought in my Surly Crosscheck for some adjustments because, while I've had it for years, I hadn't been riding it very often because I wasn't happy with the way it was set up and didn't find it to be comfortable to ride. Lydia and Tim adjusted it to fit me better and made some other changes that I wanted. They were really friendly and helpful with answering all of my questions and did a great job with my bike. It's awesome now. I don't even care that it's freezing outside right now because I'm so excited about my bike that I barely notice the icy wind :D But seriously, this shop has really friendly and knowledgeable people who will do great things with your bike. read more

I came here today to purchase a tire and tube about 15 minutes before they closed. In addition to this purchase, I thought it would be a good idea to put some air in the tires of my son's stroller since they have a public pump. I told the woman who was working on the sales side of the business which tire and tube I was looking for and as she searched for the items I began pumping the tires my son who will be 2 yrs old in a few months was in the stroller. Before I could finish putting air in my tires a bike mechanic from the shop came outside and said "hey man how much air did you put in the tires?" He didn't make any eye contact, he didn't ask if I wanted him to assist me, and began touching the tires to check how much air was in the tire. My son was in the stroller while he did this. It felt like a violation of space and my property. I didn't need his assistance with checking the air in my tires, he felt too close to my son without consent. I don't need help checking the air in the tires I just pumped. I've been putting air in tires for over 20 years. The fact that I was being watched from the inside of this shop, and the entitlement of this employee enraged me. But this is a part of the entitled, passive-aggressive, arrogant, super macho bike mechanic culture. I don't know how many times in my life I've had to deal with this type of arrogance from bike mechanics. But today it felt worse because he implicated my son. Again, I don't know you and where you have been so please don't get too close to me or my son. It's totally out of line. I complained to another employee who was working in sales and apologized for this employee, but that is not enough. I'm not here to cancel this business or ensure that someone loses their job. However, I want this to be a teachable moment for this mechanic. Perhaps, next time you want to check the air in someone else's tires ask them if you can assist them and not assume that you have the privilege to touch their property. Perhaps, next time address that person with kindness. Perhaps, next time have a better judgment of how close you can come in contact with a parent's child. I say this as an advisory to you. I'm a decent person and felt frustrated and violated, but didn't allow myself to lose total control. Not everyone in this city is that decent. read more

I was using 5th Ave but this new outpost just opened so now I get to go closer to the house. All the great services with the back up of the 5th Avenue Store (which is bigger). But Jeff and Tyler are great. They took great care of me and cleaned up a bike so that we can ride it again. And even helped out in an emergency (flat tire and they were closed).
