Red carpet treatment! I went to this location close to my apt, because Lydia works there and is a member of several of my women's bike groups and creator of Bike Style. She is a person of color as am I and I find it welcoming to feel included in the cycling community in Brooklyn. I emailed Lydia, because I wanted a different Allez than the one I was giving up on and had trouble finding and to let her know my cross bike was officially for sale! She suggested that I come in to get fitted and talk to Nicholas Colon to help me make a decision. Nicholas asked what I wanted to do with the bike and put me on a Specialized Ruby for a test ride. I liked the ride, but not the color so he showed me two others on the computer that he had, but just weren't assembled and on the floor yet. I left the shop and continued to correspond with Nicholas via email as he had sent a email with the specs on the bike I road and the two others he suggested. To be honest the days afterwards I spent looking at other brands at other stores and talked to women's cycling groups buddies to see what they were riding. I sold my bike and returned to the shop to test the Ruby Elite, because It had everything I need to accomplish the distance goals I have. However , it had not been assembled and unfortunately remained so upon another visit, but eventually I got a email that it was finished. She was gawjus! Friendly, honest sales team but the repair team wanted to fleece me. I am getting a new bike soon so all I wanted on my current bike was the gears adjusted and new brake pads. I was there about 6 weeks ago and the guy told me I was looking at at minimum $400 in repairs or the bike was not safe to ride. Also, they charge you $25 for the quote if you don't do the repairs. I went to Brooklyn Bicycle on Coney Island Ave and she did what I needed for $100 and the bike is working beautifully and safely. read more

I haven't been moved to write a review in a long time, but the folks at Bicycle Habitat were so great that, well, here I am. I popped in to the shop many months ago (as in, still some patches of snow on the ground) and spoke with one of their staff, Carla, who helped me think through which kind of bike to buy and then get me on a test ride that day. I haven't had a bike in about twenty-years -- her questions zeroed in on what kind of bike, budget etc -- so knowledgable and helpful. We found the bike I liked and I told her I'd be back in the spring to buy it, which I did a few weeks ago. She also helped me to choose a great baby-seat for the kiddos so they could ride on back, a lock etc. My kids and I LOVED it for the whole weekend until -- cue the sad music -- it was promptly stolen. Word to the wise: thieves can cut through a Kryptonite lock like butter. Do NOT leave your bike out overnight in Brooklyn. I know, I know, I'm an idiot. And yet, that is, NOT what the kind folks at Bicycle Habitat said. They were just totally compassionate and non-judgmental and helped me replace the bike (and offered me a kind and generous discount.) The fellow I worked with to replace the bike, Nathan, was friendly, non-judgmental and clearly loves seeing people enjoy the bikes they sell. All in all, it was such a great experience and I am certain that if you're considering buying a bike online you will do MUCH better by buying local. You can order a bike online on their website and they'll build it for you and you can pick it up like a week or so later. They have a lot more stock then other places right now even though there's a shortage. This location in Brooklyn is really easy to get to as there are so many trains that run through this place and it's easy to ride out of there when you're done since you are right next to a pretty decent bike lane. Staff is cool. Nice. And helpful. This is probably the safest bike shop I've been to concerning covid because they literally take it so seriously that you gotta wait outside for them to come to the door and get your stuff for you. I really appreciated this though because even though you can't go in they still make a really good effort to help you and they won't leave you hanging or anything even after they hand you your stuff. They were helping another guy with some repairs while they were helping me and they took time to give him advice about chain lubrication (which no one seems to do enough seriously guys lubricate your chain once a week) They also gave me a coffee cup for free with my new bike so I mean....that's cool right? read more

When some jerk left a nail in a Brooklyn bike lane, these wonderful people came to my rescue -- at a reasonable, fair price, stated in advance, finished while I waited. Also gave an honest diagnosis of my bike's overall condition -- don't get it overhauled now, while they have me captive, but wait 6-12 months when I need to do it. Mixed review. Most of the time, Bicycle Habitat does a great technical job. If you need a large fix or something overhauled, I think they're the obvious choice. The reason I can't give 5 stars is that some of their sales staff and management are straight-up rude. I bought a bike from them 2 years ago, and when I told one of the sales staff that I liked the bike (which I bought from them) recently, he pointed to a $3000 bike on the wall and just said "well, it's ok." The same staff member forgot 2 of the 4 things I wanted tuned-up, so I had to awkwardly keep reminding him. Great technical expertise, and I trust them 100% with technical fixes, but getting condescending quips about expensive bikes is a turn-off. read more

Walked in for a chain replacement on my road bike because mine was all rusty after having left it outside all winter (I inherited the bike from my dad and have had it for over ten years now). The mechanic was super friendly--he suggested I also replace the gear wheels (? can't remember what they're called) because they were also rusty as hell, but I decided against it because it was cheaper to do just the chain. All in all, replacing the chain cost $8 (part) + $10 (labor), and came out to $30 to replace the chain (all in under 15 minutes). When I asked about the gear wheels, he estimated the cost to be around $30 for the parts and $10 for the labor (total of about $45 including tax), but that could be wrong because I didn't end up doing it. Great experience and friendly! Will be going back if I ended up needing to replace the gear wheels. read more

Really great service, especially compared to other bike shops in the neighborhood, where I've been used to handing over my bike and waiting a week for them to fix it. Although you may have to wait a bit at Bicycle Habitat-- especially on the summer weekends-- they usually do repairs while you're outside. A few months ago I was doing Prospect Park laps and realized my tubeless was no seated correctly. I dropped in and they quickly mounted it / popped it into place in a few minutes-- no charge. Came back last week to fix some creaking in the bottom bracket and they took care of a few other things, including a real derailleur adjustment and disc brake pad replacement. Very reasonable prices on labor and the mechanics know what they're doing. The BB creak didn't go away last week, so today I brought the bike back and they diagnosed the issue after looking comprehensively at the cranks, chainring bolts, BB, pedals, etc. No charge on the 2nd visit, which was very kind as it took a few additional steps and time to figure it out. Went there a few nights ago with two flat tires, on a rainy evening. They took me right away and fixed them while I waited. On the way home, the front tire went flat again. I brought it in the next day and the repair guy (after a very careful examination) found a glass shard wedged in the outer tire, removed it, put in a new tube and changed the air valve and then didn't charge me for the follow-up visit. Super-friendly staff. I also bought front and back bike lights while I was there, and while I suspect that the sales guy was trying to up-sell me, the lights he recommended were very good quality and on sale. read more

Incredibly kind folks and excellent service. I was able to walk in with under-inflated tires and brakes that needed adjustment and not only did he fix those, he also lubricated the chain and charged me so little I wasn't sure I'd heard right. So far, my experiences at BH have been awesome. Twice I've walked in with an urgent repair need, and the guys not only helped me so quickly but then thanked ME for waiting (all of ten minutes from the time I walked in). They also go above and beyond trying to make a buck. I was considering buying a pricey new lock because mine was malfunctioning, but instead, a staff member asked to see my old lock for a moment and fixed its problem. The environment in this shop is welcoming and friendly- and never too busy to make time for whatever you want to talk about. They have great products in the store and are knowledgeable about them. Bonus- While I was in, a girl came in who ordered her bike online through them. She was ready to just take off on it, but the staff pressed pause and had her test ride it, make sure she liked it, and made sure it was fit perfectly for her. After my brake line snapped I brought my bike in to get it looked at and fixed. Lydia called me back later and gave me an assessment of what needed to be done/replaced on the bike and even categorized the work into necessary and less than necessary work. When I picked up my bike, I noticed that the back wheel was wobbly. I didn't get a chance to bring the bike in til the next week but Lydia and another guy who actually worked on my bike recognized me and my bike! They apologized and fixed the problem free of charge no questions asked. Now my bike rides like a dream. This shop was recommended to me by an avid biker and I will now definitely recommend this shop to any who needs work done on their bike. These guys are the real deal. read more

Bicycle Habitat is hands down the best bike shop I've ever walked into. I recently went in after my first biking accident and learned that since I purchased my trek in one of their stores I am eligible for unlimited free tune-ups. The bike mechanic was very welcoming; he walked me through all the issues with my bike and gave me a quick mini-clinic on how to take care of it. I'm still a relative beginner with much to learn so he did this quite patiently, never talking down to me. I left the store feeling way better than I went in. i bought a bike here. while i love my bike, i felt the sales staff to be not incredibly friendly or personable. the guy that sold me my bike kept pushing more features and other accessories on me. they had to order my bike from trek and i received no calls about when it would come. when i finally got my bike, there wasn't really a thank you or follow up about coming in for free tune ups. sales guy just adjusted the seat and i awkwardly left as he rushed to attempt to make another sale. i spent big bucks on a bike so i think i should have been treated better. i just felt like "another sale" to them. i think the other bicycle habitat (pk slope location) is better. read more

Bicycle Habitat is an amazing bike shop - great selection, knowledgeable staff, but the best part is their customer service. Lydia and Raj (but especially Lydia!) were amazingly kind and patient with me, and totally dedicated to helping me find the right bike - a process that took me almost 2 months! I have some chronic pain issues, so it was tricky to find something that worked, and I took my time deciding, but they never rushed me, and they were really thoughtful about helping me figure out what I needed. They gave me great advice on selling my old bike, and I never felt like they were just trying to "make a sale" - only trying to ensure I had a bike I loved that I'd be comfortable and safe on. read more
