Great location, space, and good food, but the bar needs new management. The bartenders are hostile, grumpy, on their phones, and/or generally too cool for school. I can deal with all that, but when a liter of beer costs $18, it is important to be served a full liter of beer. The bartenders either don't know how or are unwilling to deliver what you've paid for. In my group, everyone with a liter or half liter was consistently underserved. The attitude from behind the bar made you just want to take what beer you we given and get away from them as quickly as possible. This has been my experience every time the 3-4 times I've been here. I don't think I'll be back until I hear someone new is in charge. read more

I've been there three times now and this place is HAPPENING!!!! I love the outdoor seating! You get a blankie too if it gets too cold and the long tables will help you make new friends easily. Let me just put it this way: no beer is worth an hour wait in line. The food was good, but mostly heavy german style dishes with a lot of sausage and the like. Sure the beer was good, but definitely not worth having to fight for a table, standing in line for literally an hour, and paying a premium for all of it to boot. I won't be back. read more

Low and behold I heard they got their lease extended another 5 years. It was after a beer or two so hopefully this is not just another hazed SF rumor as I'd hate to see 58 lux-condo units here instead. Indeed it's always a pleasure to visit this peaceful haven in crazy Hayes Valley. Last time I was here I saw a lot of wimpy 1/2 liters begin drunk, so let me ask: why not do it real Munich style and opt for a full liter? Just be ready commit because that's a lot of beer (maybe try a sample first at the register.) I guess my only real complaint about the place is there's no cover band blasting away tunes. Oh, and you can't really stand on the benches or on the table the way they do in Germany. But then again, there are probably less injuries here. Found this place by chance while walking around San Francisco. This place is a great place to grab a beer and enjoy the outdoors. The atmosphere is one of a patio setting with just a relaxing vibe. All the beverages are German which I would have expected given the name. They had food there it looked good but we did not get any. Awesome!!! Seriously felt like I was in Germany. I had the wheat beer and we shared some food: a regular pretzel, sunflower pretzel, and the pork belly sliders. All the food was yummy and they have specials every day too. Really diligent staff that was always walking around picking up empty glasses, food trays, and offering blankets. What a cool concept. I love the idea and concept but massive lines and fighting for seating when it get packed is frustrating. It gets packed on every sunny day which is awesome for business and I get you can't really expand but waiting for 20/30 minutes for a 8-14 beer can convince people to move. The people are real, the beer is fresh and cold, and the neighborhood is friendly. This place is awesome. On sunny weekends, expect to wait at least 30 min to get in. Service was very good. Lots of community seating. Lots of bike parking, good bathrooms, great beer list and reasonably priced for SF. Great crowd, food selection is German style pub food but good quality and fast service. The staff is very good. Biergarten gets the stamp of approval from my Bavarian boyfriend, which says a lot. The requisite tree is in the center of the garten and additional vegetation is planted around the perimeter so it feels more green even though you're in the middle of a city. The benches are exactly the ones they have in Bavaria (though they are spaced slightly further apart here since we Americans need our personal space). We didn't try the food but I noticed they serve pretzels with obatzda, a cream cheese and paprika spread, which is surprisingly legit. And of course the German beer list is solid (got your weissbier, lager, doppelbock, pilsner, and even a radler (50/50 Helles lager + sparkling lemonade) - but it's sold at American prices. A half liter will cost you $8-10 (Schneider Weisse is $9 and their Edel-Weisse is $10), and a full liter costs double - so no cost savings for ordering the liter. Besides the prices, the other thing that is very un-Bavarian is the line. Germans hate lines and they really hate having to wait for their beer. At Biergarten on a sunny Sunday afternoon we waited 27 minutes to order because well, San Franciscans love lines. However the SF touch that I do appreciate is the blankets for when it inevitably gets cold and windy. All in all, Biergarten is a very smartly executed concept which is why we continue to return. But as my boyfriend says, be prepared to just close your eyes and swipe the card! read more

They have a good variety of beers on tap and knowledgable people to serve them up. Still, the variety isn't as large as expected considering the title.
