My very pregnant best friend is turning 40, and we were on the hunt for a chill, comfortable dinner spot in the Mission that still felt special. Big Finish Wine Tavern understood the assignment. Making a reservation online was seamless. I was initially intrigued by the advertised "$7 x 7" happy hour... which, unfortunately, does not exist. The only $7 item available was a pimento cheese dip that, frankly, was disgusting and didn't measure up to the quality of any of the items on the regular menu. It might be time to retire that sign. Now for the good news: everything else was fantastic. The wings and burrata were a strong start- flavorful, well-executed, and a solid appetizer choice. The pork chop was phenomenal. There's a reason it's the signature dish. It had depth, richness, and the kind of bold flavor that made you pause to admire its complexity and simplicity. Absolute standout. The halibut and pappardelle were clean, well-prepared, and crowd-pleasing, though they didn't deliver the same punch as the pork chop. I'd put the broccolini in that category as well. nicely done, but not the star of the show. The salads, on the other hand, are destination-worthy. The chicory salad alone is enough to get me back to the Mission again and again. big, bold flavors with just the right balance. The tavern salad leaned heavily into pickle-forward territory, which I loved, but it may not be for everyone. Dessert? Whew. The sticky date cake was hands-down the best dessert I've had in a long time and a clear winner over the pot de crème. No contest. We also sampled a couple of N/A drinks, and each one was thoughtful and genuinely delicious- not an afterthought, which I always appreciate. And for my fellow Star Trek fans: do not skip the bathroom. Trust me. Huge thanks to the hardworking team at Big Finish Wine Tavern for making my bestie's prego-40th celebration feel special. My friend and I came a little after 5pm on a Friday and it was relatively empty, but then got packed around 6-630pm. We ordered a couple of glasses of wine (on and off the HH menu), apps, entree and dessert to share. I am writing this review to comment purely on the porkchop. This was one of the best pork chop dishes I have ever had (including at more fancy schmancy establishments). It was cooked to perfection and the flavors and textured all went together beautifully. Came here for a little date night, and was super impressed! The restaurant is on the smaller side, but also very cozy. We sat at the bar, where we could watch the cooks make food and bartenders pour wine, I liked our spot. We each ordered a glass of wine, and both loved our choices. For food, we got the following: -trout dip - great dish, the dip was flavorful and refreshing, and the chips were the perfect pairing. -meatballs - nothing too amazing, but great flavoring on the sauce. The bread it came with was a bit burnt, making it hard to eat. -pumpkin soup- sooo delicious! The soup was thick and tasted so creamy. Loved the seeds on top for a bit of a crunch. We ordered this to share, and they separated it into two bowls without us even asking, which was seeet :) -mushroom risotto - cooked perfectly, but definitely heavy on the mushrooms. The rice could have used a bit more salt/flavor imo, but the mushrooms were great and the dish overall was a hit. Peach crisp - great dessert! The cinnamon ice cream paired so well with the crispy pear, and was a perfect way to end the meal. We finished off with a dessert wine, which was crispy and sweet, and I'd definitely get it again. Came here for date night on a Saturday and it was a really pleasant experience! We made a reservation a couple days in advance but it seems like there were open bar seats for walk in as well. Got the burrata and spring salad to start and the flat iron steak as our main. They were all really delicious but the burrata had to be our favorite! Stumbled upon Big Finish Wine Tavern a couple of Sunday evenings ago. For whatever reason, this part of the Mission, especially on 16th Street, has a difficult time sustaining. Hopefully, that's not the case for this excellent restaurant. This review is only about their food. I did notice the extensive offerings on their alcohol/wine menu. I wasn't too hungry so I opted for the ceviche, which was very refreshing. Corn soup was also ordered, the soup was very hearty and perfect for 2 people to share. I had a few bites of the pork chop, and that was cooked just right. No rubbery texture, just light enough to taste all the other ingredients of the entree. Service was fantastic, apologies for forgetting the person's name (he has glasses and a big knife tattoo on his forearm). He was so personable and shared stories. For a second, I thought he was the owner, but he said he wasn't. This wine bar's interior is perfect for a date or catching up with friends. Be sure to check out the restroom, cool theme. I was visiting town and stumbled upon Big Finish when looking for a restaurant near my friends in The Mission! It certainly did not disappoint. Upon being seated, we met both the owners, Adam and Melissa, who are running the restaurant themselves along with their family! Both have been in the food industry for more than a decade, and have owned and operated several successful restaurants in the US. They were absolutely hospitable and made sure we enjoyed our food and wine during our time. We started with the two dips that were perfect appetizers to share. They were just the right size too especially if you want to save room for their large main courses. After that we ordered both the pappardelle and the corn risotto, each were so incredible in their taste and flavor. We each had several glasses of wine, my favorite being a chilled red that we finished our meal with. Their restaurant offers a warm and friendly atmosphere and their inviting spirits make you feel right at home. And the beer and cocktails are well-intentioned, not an afterthought. I had a really well made NA cocktail and saw beers from the likes of Cellarmaker and similar quality breweries. This is a great new spot! I went here with some friends on a Friday evening. Even though it was fairly packed inside, the staff were still very attentive and provided tons of suggestions on which wines we should try. Given that there were at least well over 40 wines on tap, I really appreciated how helpful the staff was in helping us decide what to order. I'm a big fan of sparkling water, so I was pleasantly surprised that sparkling water is offered as a complimentary option along with still water for all customers. I didn't try any of the food. But the people in my group who ordered food enjoyed their meals. Honestly, I'm not a huge wine drinker. Where does one even start when reviewing one of the most disappointing dining experiences that I've ever witnessed first hand? Well, here we go. We had a 5:30 PM reservation for a party of six and weren't even acknowledged at our table until about 6:05. In all honestly the restaurant wasn't that busy when we first arrived-- the real issue seemed to be that there was only one server covering the entire floor. We tried to flag our server down a couple of times but were completely ignored. Not even a hint of acknowledgement. All he had to do was give us a nod and we'd understand that he actually had us in his roster. Because service was so delayed, we ended up consolidating our wine and dinner order once he finally came to the table. I guess someone called the troops in because eventually the owner/manager finally showed up. Admittedly this did improve the backlog somewhat. But still, from there, things continued to go downhill...and hard. Here are some examples. * One appetizer was completely forgotten during the appetizer course and instead was inputted with dinner. * The birthday guest (Miles) received the wrong entrée -- a chicory salad instead of his chicken sandwich. Which I can see sounding similar when you're rushed and there is a continuous din of an increasingly crowded restaurant. In all fairness the owner did gift us that salad due to the misunderstanding. * When we finished dinner and tried to order another round of wine (this is a wine bar), we were told in so many words, NO and that we had to hurry up because another reservation was coming in and we only had about 15 minutes left. But...we were offered desert. Which is weird!!! That was especially frustrating considering we lost 30-35 minutes at the beginning simply waiting to be served. Yet suddenly we were being pressured to leave. At one point our waiter suggested us sitting at the bar while they seated other guests, but that idea was dismissed by us. What? We have to get up and relocate? Just ask the next party waiting for their table sit at the bar and wait. This isn't unheard of. I've waited at the bar for a table multiple times. To make matters worse, a mandatory 20% gratuity was added due to party size (six people). Normally that's fine -- but the service was objectively subpar, so paying full auto-grat on top of everything felt insulting. When we calmly shared our concerns with the owner, his response in so many words was essentially: "What do you want me to do about it?" " No apology. No acknowledgment. Just annoyance. He even mentioned he was called in on his day off -- which frankly isn't something guests should be made to feel guilty about. Ownership comes with responsibility. Walk it off! You knew the job was "dangerous" when you took it. We even spoke with the waiter regarding how we were "mishandled" and he got a little defensive and cavalierly said that there was a two hour table turnover policy. Huh?!?! We didn't see that written down anywhere nor did he mention this so called policy at anytime during the meal. We could have pivoted with that knowledge if mentioned at all! We're not unreasonable! I've worked in the service industry for 30+ years. I understand bad nights happen. I didn't want to complain. But the lack of accountability, empathy, or basic hospitality was shocking. The tone was condescending, dismissive, and unprofessional. It was also Miles's birthday. We weren't expecting cake or fanfare -- just some basic warmth. There was none. We left feeling rushed, disappointed, and unheard. I've never had a restaurant owner speak to me that way. And I've been eating out at all sorts of establishments for 40 years! If you're going to enforce strict seating policies and auto-gratuity, then the service and management need to match that level of expectation. Unfortunately, this place missed the mark on every level. The downside for this relatively new establishment is that we're adults who live in the neighborhood and have no problem putting our money where our mouth is. Unfortunately we will not be back and therefore the business may suffer for it. Maybe it won't. But that doesn't matter because we will not be back. This wont be my first or last time lambasting my experience at this place. Lastly, if I may add a bit of constructive criticism. It would be nice if they had bottle service as well. All of their wine is on tap. Which means that the severs have to continuously run back and forth to refill glasses as opposed to leaving a bottle on the table that the diner can refill their own glasses, themselves. I get it. The restaurant makes more money on single pours but they can also lose money by not having this option as well. We would have been more than happy to order bottles of wine so that would have freed up the staff to expedite a more solid dining experience. read more

What we have here is a wine bar with some new American food. We popped in for some holiday drinks and bites. As you can expect, the wine selection is extensive and full. The server was really nice and super knowledgeable. We ordered a few appetizers which were pricey and on the small side. Even if they brought a few more pieces of bread with the meatballs that would be nice. To be fair, we didn't ask for more bread, but I think they would have given us more if we asked. I think the upsetting thing here is there was no cheese plate on the menu. It's a wine bar and that's classic option (especially as we ate elsewhere earlier and it would have made a nice after dinner spot). My husband and I were immediately drawn in by the light of the Tiffany style lamps and exposed brick wall. By the time we finish and ask for another glass, we are told they want us to leave because the next reservation party is arriving and there is a mysterious 2 hour window you're allowed to have a table (note we couldn't get service for almost half that time). What? Meanwhile, we're forced to pay the tip as part our check because we are a party of 6. So you can treat customers anyway you feel like if there are 5 or more and still get the tip? Lame.
