We went as family on a busy Monday night. Place was mobbed for reasons I can not nail down, weather was perfect could be start of AYSO and school but I digress. One sales guy on the floor MOBBED by 4 different people shoving shoes in his face. His name was ARMAND. He kept cool under pressure and handled all customers issues professionally and quickly. We happened to be buying a lot of gear that needed fitting and a professional opinion. The company sent me the wrong pair of softball pants. I sent them pictures of what I ordered and what they actually sent me so they could see the wrong pant was sent. They still claimed to have sent the right item. They stated they will pay for return shipping but not for the original 10 dollars it cost to ship to me even though it was their mistake. I would like to commend the staff at this location for their excellent customer service. But especially, I would like to compliment the manager on duty today. I wanted to return an item which I purchased at a different location, but my receipt was all messed up and illegible because of the hand sanitizing lotion which I used after purchasing the item in question. The cashier called the manger without me having to ask for it. The young manager was so patient as he tried to decipher the receipt! He did not give up but, rather, he found another way to look up my purchase in their system even though the receipt was useless. I could not be happier with his attitude, helpfulness and kindness. He showed some truly excellent customer service skills. I was treated with courtesy and understanding. He needs either a promotion or a raise! read more

Is there to say there workers are right in calling customers names and will hang up on you as you try and discuss your complaint. Worst customer service I have dealt with ever. It's acceptable to this thing they call a manager to insult50 year customers. Acceptable for there workers to tell outright lies about you. No customers matter to this customer service. The best they could come up with was I said a bad word two and a half years ago. Ceo is unreachable. Doesn't care about big 5 operations. Only option left are legal proceedings as customer service refuses(jessica) to let you speak to hire up people. Had a problem with one store in 50 years. Bought my very first hockey stick here so Big 5 is to blame! I'm surprised that this place has such a limited supply of hockey equipment since it's so close to the Toyota (formerly Health South) Center (right around the corner...maybe that was the problem). No composites but heavy cheap one-piece woodys. 1) Hockey tape: yeah they got a few rolls. 2) Chest protectors: only fits if you're a kid 3) Hockey skates: go to Toyota/Health South Center 4) Elbow/shin pads: see item #2 5) Hockey pants: forget it! I guess I went to the wrong place for the above items or expected too much. Aside from lack of hockey equipment, Big 5 has a rather good selection of running shoes, tennis rackets, anything except hockey! Big 5 is good for supplies when your kid is starting with T-ball, soccer, basketball, etc., and also for snow gloves, ski mask, etc., when you want to go to the mountains for Winter Break but not going to turn pro anytime soon. We also got Heely's for the kiddo at Big 5 once upon a time. I went to the El Segundo store last month and the manager was awesome, helping to find a workaround for an issue I had with a new model of a piece of equipment (they don't sell the old version anymore). Other associates were kind of standing around and only did something when he asked. Some of them seem to know their merchandise but others don't. (Manager was very knowledgeable.) Would be great if all of them showed at least half as much enthusiasm about being there and helping customers as the manager. read more

Great service! I came into this location because it's the closest to my house. I was looking for affordable workout gear, & my bf was looking for CO2 for his paintball gun. As far as what they have, I would say it was a decent amount. They had a variety of things on sale, & it wasn't too clustered which made it easier to browse. I personally think they have good deals on shoes as well. Not too shabby!! I gave them 4 starts specifically for their customer service. Once we came in we were greeted, and catered to. In the summer time, I visited a Big 5 location in another state and I was very unhappy and angry with the customer service and how I was treated as a customer. I am not the kind of person who like to complain, however, I was not about to let this one slide. I wrote a comment on the feedback section of the company site and I got a response from the Customer Service Manager at the corporate office. I was not happy with the response. First of all, the CSM was trying to protect the company policy and justify the employee's behavior and was trying to put it back on me by making me feel like I am at fault or somehow I was overreacting. Second of all, I understand from the company's point of view that it is vital to adhere to company policy. However, this policy was violated by one of your employee, and you are protecting the employee for it. This... I feel.... is an unethical business practice. Finally, while adhering to company policy is vital, so is delivering customer service, company policy and customer service are not the same and Big 5 continues to fail when it comes to customer service satisfaction. I believe this company put profit as priority over improving their delivery of customer service satisfaction. It is quite evident in how my complaint was handled on a corporate level. I have a negative impression of Big 5 overall, and your employees can use more customer service training and perhaps some cultural competency training on some locations. Furthermore, when a customer gives feedback, it may be a good idea to take into consideration the feedback given. read more

I just had the worst shopping experience in my whole life today and big thanks to Big 5 Sporting Goods! I received a commercial in my email sent by Big 5 for Gamo Air Rifle, went to their store with my wife on 3820 Mowry Ave.Fremont, CA 94538 to buy one. The firearm section is empty so that my wife went to the regular checkout to ask someone to help while I'm waiting at the firearm department. A lady came with a bitter face like I owned her 10 grand. "What can I help you?" she said. I was holding my cell with the commercial shows up and pointing to the picture and told her I want to get one of this. "English!" she said, I'm deeply insulted. I repeat the same sentence again. She went to the counter area then went to back of the store without a word. After a while, she came back with a box, I paid and got out the store, dropped all the ideas to purchase any accessory. Just want to get away from this rude lady asap. Last Christmas 2019 my daughter from New York gave me a pair of running shorts from Big 5. I took the shorts to Big 5 Rancho Bernardo and returned them, of course without a receipt, because of them being a gift and my daughter couldn't find the receipt. I was issues a gift card, later in the year I went to purchase a item with the gift card and I was told it was blocked. Calling customer service I was told they blocked the gift card until I could prove that they shorts were purchased. ( REALLY ) Last week Nov 2020 I went to return a pair of shoes ( with a receipt ) Never worn still in the original box. I paid with a debit card. They blocked the refund until I could speak to customer service. The manager said, there was nothing she could do to over ride the system. Tried calling in the middle of the day on a Friday at 12:45. VOICE mail, sorry we're closed call back during normal business hours. Finally got through at 1:15 pm, they close their corp. office for lunch. I was interrogated over the phone about my purchase . Finally i was told that I could return to the store for my refund. Got to the store still blocked. Finally the same manager said that since they called her to release the refund, she could do it. HUM, before nothing could be done , now she has the authority. The manager said she could over ride the system, but needs my ID, I told her no that's not going to work since, this would flag it again that I didn't have a receipt.... Her response, OH YOUR RIGHT. Long story short, Find something to exchange your refund if you don't have a receipt, otherwise they'll give you a gift card and it could be blocked and you'll never get your money. read more

I came to this store to return an item I had purchased one days prior. I had the receipt, everything in the box there was nothing wrong with the item just not what my little brother had wanted for his birthday. As soon as the manager came over he seemed very hostile and instantly told me they wouldn't be able to return the item. I had specifically asked the associate when I was making my purchase if I would be able to return the item which he told me would be no problem. Terrible customer service. I went to this store after 6pm and man these guys looked like they were hating life! I haven't been to a Big 5 in forever and now I remember why. I went hearing they were having a sale and popped in to see if there were any hiking boots. I came in and no one greeted me which is not the biggest deal but it was noticed because I actually made eye contact with a few employees and it looked like they deliberately didn't want to say anything. I went to the back for the shoes and saw only 4 pairs of womens hiking boots. While I was checking them out, an employee did come by to see if I had any questions. My comment was "are these your only pairs?" she bluntly replied yes and walked away before I could ask her anything else. I googled the brand (because that's all I could do at that point) and saw they were on sale already over Overstock and were only $5 cheaper in store and didnt have great reviews. I was over the store so I just decided to go. When I was at the door, the original eye contact group finally asked me if I needed help finding something and since it was too little too late I just said no and walked out. I was helped by a gentleman named Raymond. He was very helpful in assisting me, so I was able to get in and out quickly. They always have coupons online too, which is awesome! Big 5 is good when it comes to sales because they always have the cheaper prices, this Big 5 is the bigger one in the area. Of course like any other sporting good store it is grouped by the sport you are shopping for. This particular time I bought a Bell bicycle helmet for $20, not bad at all. I was looking to see if they had any good deals on their road bikes but they looked a little more "cheaply" made than others I've seen. This particular time they were having a Labor Day sale and to go with my new helmet I also bought a pair of Nike women's dri-fit work out pants on sale. Usually have to shop around for a good deal, but Big 5 usually has the better deals when it comes to sports equipment. read more

I worked at Big 5 corporate for three weeks through Robert Half temp agency. I am very disappointed in both companies, but I will save my Robert Half story for another post, as this is about Big 5. Like I said I was a temp, and about 2 weeks ago after doing a COVID screen, where they walk around asking if you have any symptoms of COVID, I expressed that my throat was hurting and I was subsequently sent home for the day. After contacting the agency to let them know what was going on, they reached out to Big 5 to get clarification on what happened. Someone from upper management explained to the agency that if you are sick, you can not come to work. Let's fast forward to this week. I was again sick, and per the instructions given did not come to work sick, as a result I was terminated from my assignment due to attendance, AFTER following protocol, by NOT coming to work sick. This is discrimination! I follow the rules and get punished for it! How does that make any sense?! I am very disappointed in how this company handled my situation. read more

The heels of the hiking boots I had purchased from the Big 5 Sporting Goods in Oceanside store became unglued and flopped half way through a moderate hike. This happened the first time I wore the boots! I have been given nothing but a great deal of hassle, run-around, grief and frustration since I brought these boots back to the store for a refund or store credit. I brought the defective boots to the store about a month ago and asked for store credit since I no longer had the receipts. The assistant manager (Jordan) examined the boots and agreed that they were in brand new condition, except of course for the heels which were completely detached. However, he stated that they no longer carried this brand and hence the Company had removed from the store computers the information he needed to process the return. He asked me to call the headquarters for assistance and handed me an 800 number to call. Jessica answered the phone when I called the headquarters. She was most unhelpful, unprofessional, disrespectful and extremely rude. She denied me access to the district manager overseeing the Oceanside store, or anyone else who could help bring the matter to a resolution. Instead, she continued in a series of outrageous remarks, claims and opinions; such as "I must have not used the boots for a while and that it is normal for heels to detach when the boots sit unused!!" She became quite rude -- repeatedly interrupting me in the middle of each sentence, and eventually hang up on me -- while I was trying to explain to her that I, like the majority of hikers (e.g., members of the Sierra Club), go hiking once-in-awhile and no more than a few times a year, and that a pair of boots normally last a good few years regardless of how often they are used or set aside unused. I called the store and explained to the store manager (Daniel) the ineffectual telephone conversation I had with Jessica. He told me to bring the boots back to the store in order to see what he could do. When I did, he examined the boots and seemed satisfied that they were still in brand new condition. However, he stated what I had already heard before -- that the store no longer carried this brand and that the information he needed to process the return had been removed from the store computer. I told him that I had paid about $35 for the boots and will be satisfied if he gave me store credit for that amount. From what I understood him saying, he agreed. I spent an hour or two to find another pair, but when I brought them to the cashier, Daniel said that I had misunderstood and that he had offered to provide a voucher toward the purchase of another boot. The voucher happened to be only $5.00 for the pair I had selected! I left the store frustrated, disappointed, and dissatisfied. Before leaving, however, I asked him to contact the headquarters in order to get the support or authorization he needed to process the return. Subsequently, I kept in touch with him once every few days. But, to my utmost disappointment, he informed me yesterday that he had been unable to get the support he needed and has given up trying. The store does not seem to have a clear warranty on the hiking boots it sells. By blocking every possible avenue from getting a remedy, I have no choice but to feel defrauded for the boots I have purchased and can not use. I have written letters to Mr. Steven Miller, CEO of the company and several executive management complaining about the matter. But I have not received any replies. read more

I've never "Yelped" before, but the experience I had here in this store is remarkable. On Tuesday October 2, 2012, I walked in and I was greeted by the friendly cashiers and manager at the entrance of the store! I went looking for a baseball set for my kids. Although I played softball myself (in my younger days of course!) I still needed some assistance in getting the right equipment. One of the employees, politely approached me and asks if I needed some help. This young man's name was John. The entire 20 minutes as I asked questions he kept his patience with me, and was very knowledgeable. I would definitely return to this store! Not only were the employees knowledgeable, friendly, and on their game, but they have great sale prices. The manager was impolite impatient and criticize me the staff in the shoe department we're great other people tried to help but didn't have a clue where the kickboard for a pool was and referred me to boogie boards and skim boards. The manager said we don't have those items I said I saw it online for the store he interrupted talking to me twice to answer the phone and finally came back and said now you have three people looking for stuff for you. I felt like saying if it takes more people to find the stuff in the store that shows that you have so be it. i really thought this branch would be special because it is a training store for execs. they were in stock, which isnt always the case elsewhere, but the help was a 0. one guy stood next to me doing pricing, while i looked for a price, he then walked away. the manager on duty walked by me 1 minute later looking for the clerk- also ignored me. then got to the counter and the 2 girls both took returns in front of me and took forever, they really hassled the other customers. the manager on duty saw me wait over 15 minutes just to pay, put a clerk on her break and ignored me. he walked away from the line with people in line to talk to his employees behind the gun counter. i was really hot! i guess its pay higher prices and go to sportmart. read more
