I find myself coming here at least 1-2 times per month. The staff are pretty miserable usually and will seldomly even say hello when you walk in. There's a huge lack of customer service, respect, and professionalism. The store itself normally has what I need, from bullets, to cleats, and fishing gear. A few of the female staff working here really hate their jobs and you can tell whenever you are forced to interact with them at the register. Entered store and was greeted by a blank stare by large bespecked Latino guy. I cut my smile short. No hello nothing. After I went by him he retreated to chat with his buddy, but greeted the next patron who appeared Hispanic, his coworker was doing something on a shelf near register. This was about 2:30 pm. He was wearing a black tshirt heavy set, no one offered any help, though I did hear him greet another guy who was a younger Latino. I'm a friendly person and really don't appreciate such treatment, I know it's hard to get good people with what they pay, but this was no service at all, a lousy feeling. I come here every month or so, maybe with the loss of the .99cent store they lost many people and perhaps are closing themselves. Perhaps being "white" and older earned me such treatment? I don't know but it certainly turned me off on going there. Maybe the manager might do a better job in hiring? I won't return for a while till I get the bad taste out of my mouth. I come to this location because we don't have many options in this area and I like the store but the customer service here is non existent. The last few times I'm come here for simple things I often just look for things myself because no one really ever asks "are you looking for something". Today for instance I went in to look for gym & camping equipment and when I asked about price the assistant manager was looking down at his cell phone the whole time. I walked over to the area with pocket knife's because I wanted to purchase one and again no help, attempted to wave him down and he never looked up from his phone. As other reviewers have noted, this store has a serious issue with aggressive, hypervigilant loss prevention tactics. Profiling and following customers is uncalled for and could easily be interpreted as discrimination. I entered this store with a relative and we were immediately asked what we were looking for in a hostile manner. We were then watched with suspicion during our entire time in the store and stood next to by obvious undercover loss prevention associates who would not leave our side until a manager came over to assist us. We came in to buy one single item and not only were they out of stock but they also mistreated us during our entire visit. As we finally exited the store, a group of employees at the registers aggressively glared at us as well. It was a terrible experience from start to finish. This location clearly has an awful, unethical business model and terrible way of treating guests. I will not shop here again and hope that anyone who reads this will also take their business elsewhere. This location should not be rewarded with customer patronage when they routinely profile, mistreat and try to intimidate innocent shoppers. Shame on the employees working here who engage in this behavior and shame on the corporation that knows of this and allows it. read more

When I reached the cashier, it appears that the price for the item that I choose was higher than what was indicated on the shelf. Fortunately, the salesperson was understanding and honored the price displayed on the shelf. That what customer service is about. Recently got National Parks Adventure passes here (yes you can get them at Big 5's). The store is a good Big 5 as far as their stores go, and it has all the items you would expect there. Service there is usually pretty good for me, and parking is never a issue there even though there is a 99 Cent Only store next by. A place to go for my immediate sporting needs. Comes in handy if you have a elementary school son like me. read more

The store didn't seem to have enough associates on the floor this past weekend. I came in during their customer appreciation with my family. We were there to purchase a few items, nothing special or specialized. We couldn't find anyone to help us for quite some time. We saw 2 associates walk by but they were only talking to one another about their weekend plans and their previous weekend. They didn't acknowledge their customers at all. There were sandals kinda tossed all over the floor, some of them hung and some of them just put onto random shelves. One of the things that made our check out process a bit lengthier was that the cashier wasn't aware of the possibility to "stack" coupons for the customer appreciation sale as well as the one day sale pricing. I think the coupon promos and things need to be clearly posted or the cashiers need to be re-taught often. I'm sure that their schedule for promos and coupons change all the time. And with each change, I think the cashiers need to be reminded. The store was pretty organized. I was able to find most things I was looking for. Some I weren't able to find but I think that was because the items were sold out. Parking is plentiful. There is a huge lot that is shared with the other businesses in this plaza. Big 5 is next to the the 99 cent store. They get a lot of foot traffic in these 2 stores. Parking is free. Thee is some street parking also but why park on the street when there is a lot? read more

The store itself is great due to the amazing employees when they are doing one job at a time. So, management makes it a requirement for cashiers to also try and sell the customer additional items as they are paying. If they don't meet the quotas their hours are cut. I personally think it's not okay, just have people on the floor to help us and offer us additional products while we walk around. read more

It's cool spot when you need quick outdoor and camping stuff. It's also pretty cool because it's in a good location across the street from Starbucks and buy the 99 cent store. I'm so happy that a Big 5 opened up in my neighborhood. I've been here a couple of times to shop for shoes and fishing tackle. although their terminal tackle is quite limited compared to their competition but enough to quench your thirst. As for the shoe department I feel this location has a wider variety of shoes and sandals. The staff here is friendly and helpful. There is a guy who works in the shoe department who is kind of quirky but really helpful and attentive. The parking for me at least is a breeze. If you park in the area in between 99 cents store and Big 5. There is a plethora of parking spaces. Although during the hot summer days no shady parking is kind of a drag. On a side note, their fishing license machine is now operational. All in all I'm happy with this big 5. read more

Call store, girl (Jessica) answers the phone "thank you for calling Big 5". I asked if they had a particular item. She said "hang on I'm busy". Not great customer service. I know it's big 5 and one might think that it's not the ritz Carlton, but why hire employees that don't have people skills. Now if she is new, I get it. If she has been there for more than a few weeks... management has dropped the ball in not training her. I don't complain often unless I feel like I can help make something better. I shop at big 5 and in an industry where retail is dying and people are shopping online it's time to step up your game. New store in the Highland Park area and way closer to me then other Big 5 stores. Parking is shared with a 99 cent store and a few other places along a small mini mall. Plenty of parking. Walked in the store and first thing I noticed that the store was a good size but a bit crammed. As I was walking around a young guy in a black shirt said hi, I then figured he worked there, no name tag. Once he pointed out the section where I can find what I was looking for I found a size I needed and he took the time to check in the back to see if anymore sizes were available. Once at the checkout line was 4 people deep, only two cashier machines but only one cashier. Once the line was 2 before me but 4 behind me that is when the manager (guy who helped me) came around and took over the cashier and the lady moved to the other cashier. Handed over my coupon from Sundays paper and the manager said oh that is okay, this is just to get you in the door (while shooting the fish line with his hands)... Anyhow. Decent store in Northeast Los Angeles. No more Glendale or Burbank trips. read more

I had a great experience at this store with customer service. I recently purchased a YOLI 10x10 canopy tent and it got damaged due to poor weather conditions. I didn't read the fine print of the item purchased and it wasn't supposed to be covered but the company YOLI was extremely flexible and worked with me to cover the replacement of the canopy. This place is amateurish. Went to return an $18 baseball cap that didn't fit right and they interrogated me like I was in a job interview because the thing did not have a tag. Why would I buy a hat to use for a week??!'I bought many things here and never had a problem. The manager was very reasonable. My issue was with the female employee. She kept having this shit grin look on her face and shaking her head like I worn the hat and was trying to pull something over on them?? Basically saying I was lying. Then when I called her in her attitude she turned her back on me. This employee clearly needs some customer service training as her professionalism was not usually what I get at big 5. What a bad salesman. I bought a crossbow that was labeled 50% off the regular price with a special label. I pondered the sale and finally pulled the trigger. When I paid for it they charged me full price but I didn't notice because I bought a number of things. The total did seem heavy so I did take a look at the receipt at home and discovered the error. I went back to show I was overcharged and the salesman that sold it to me said it was labeled incorrectly. It took me about 20 minutes to decide and he was the guy telling me to look at labels for sales so I know he knew that was the wrong label. He had no remorse when I returned and his vibe was wrong. It's sad to see even Big 5 salespeople so desperate to make a sale they have to mislead and resort to such tactics. read more

I can't ask for anything more. Everyone who works here is friendly and helpful. One employee spent five minutes helping me pick out a baseball glove for my son and gave lots of advice about it since I am unfamiliar with baseball. He didn't rush away to work, but he thoroughly answered my questions about the products I was buying. It's also helpful when employees tell me about upcoming sales or when items are going out of season. This Big 5 is my go to spot for sporting goods at a reasonable price. I've been here a good number of times and the store layout is ok. On the small size for a big 5. Customer service is no good. They stand around for the most part and they can't answer questions. Bad employees with poor service. Highland Park for you. The parking is big not a factor there, but the location is ghetto. Tons of bums with druggies all around. Avoid area. read more
