I've been here a few times and each time has been a super experience. On my most recent trip, I was in search of baseball gear for the upcoming little league season. I had previously gone down the street to Dick's, and pretty much left after 10 minutes because I needed help and there was no body around. At Big 5 I was immediately greeted, and a salesperson helped me find the right gear. When I went to check out, the manager printed some coupons for me to use and pass out to my little league. As far as pricing goes, Big 5 had a greater range of price points for baseball gear. I also found this to be true for soccer gear as well. read more

This girl was so rude when I was making a return, rolling her eyes, running her mouth saying smart @$$ remarks, and acting like a kid not wanting to do her job. She was busy flirting with her coworkers the whole time and acted like I was interrupting her. Also the reasons why I was returning my item was because it was on a rack that had a bunch of signs saying there was a sale of 29.99 but it rang up regular price. Turns out not everything on the rack was for sale. Read carefully or just avoid this place. Long story short Cashier name Sarah was very rude disrespectful, unprofessional and unwelcoming.   I can say Very bad custumer service. Its looks like she don't like her job.  I emailed corporate office about her behavior. Hopefully they will take some action against her and teach Sarah some management skill. I rode my bike over to buy some camping supplies and after parking inside in a corner of the store I was shopping when a clerk tracked me down and told me I couldn't park in the store. I have parked inside several times before, but she was adamant that I couldn't park inside, but said I could park my $2000 Trek bike outside near the window. Nothing to lock it to out front, and I had another bike stolen within a mile of the store while shopping. Some employees like to show they are in charge by enforcing rules that don't exist. I left Big 5 and then rode to Bass Pro Shop, where they let me park inside the store entrance and said they would keep an eye on my bike. I also shop at REI and they have a place to lock up bikes outside which works great. Although I spent a lot of money at Big 5 in the past this was the last time I go there. As an FYI I take my bike in lots of stores and no one ever complains, recognizing this is a popular mode of transportation. I don't like to leave negative reviews, but this one is well deserved. read more

Terrible customer service. I called 2 times to ask if they had a pair of hiking boots they had in the ad and also what time they closed. The first time 8 let it ring almost 2 minutes. The second time was about a minute when they answered. They said I would have to come in and look. So when I got there I saw 3 employees while walking to the back. Not one acknowledged me. When I was looking at the hiking boot section a employee was asking another lady if she needed help. After she showed him what she wanted, I showed him the ad and asked if they had any more because I didn't see them on the wall. Instead of trying to help or check in the back he said, "If we have it, it will be on the wall." So I left and went to the Morgan Hill store who will actually check their inventory. read more

The previous Yelper who made a comment about the female employee with horrible service, def needs to get her life together. Requested her assistance in finding an item. Didn't bother to look and immediately said "Nope. we don't have that item, just these." Looked around the corner and it was right there. I am slightly weary of a sporting goods store that has folks dress up wearing ties like they work at Macy's. Here in Santa Cruz if you go into a sporting goods store or a bike shop... folks are not wearing slacks, a tie a collared shirt.... For the amount of folks who were in the store working they were either behind the register chit chatting... or pretending to look busy so customers would leave them alone (I worked in retail..... I know how the game is played). Several folks went by us but never asked if we needed assistance or provided any type of feedback on the products.. Do folks actually know anything about any of the products in this store? It was painfully obvious that the woman working tonight did not know her products... the BF asked about some of the home ab devices and got nothing substantial when he asked her specific questions. She did however did make it a point to flirt with my plus one... where is my special treatment asking if I found stuff okay and babbling about weight training? She just rang me up and put my receipt in the bag. Maybe next time I can be so lucky. 1. No assistance at this store 2. Super suspect that folks don't look like they work at a sporting goods store 3. I went to big 5 to buy roller blades and pads. Because of Covid I had to wait outside in line with face masks on in 100° heat, but that's fine. I totally get it and was willing to do so. There was one clerk helping everyone so it took a while. I asked to buy rollerblades andHe bought me a pack which supposedly had all three. I got home open the package and there were no kneepads. I drove back over and waited in line for 30 minutes, dripping sweat with a face mask on, and by the time I got to the front of line and explained the problem, he said to me "well, it's not my fault." he was so rude and basically told me there was nothing he could do. I couldn't return it and I didn't want to, I just wanted what I paid for - a pair of knee pads from a different container. No offer to help or look for a different size. I walk into this store and a asked a blondish-hair woman if she could guide me to the camping stuff. She lazily said "yeah, it's over there to the left", motioning to the entire lefthand side of the store. Thanks for the useless answer. Once I found what I was looking for, I returned to the front checkout island on the right side. The same clerk was in one of the isles to the left of the checkout island. As she walked up, she said "I can help you on this side", rather than simply letting me hand her the product from where I'm standing. OK, so I walk over to that side, which is only 2 feet from her but 10 feet for me. Then she greets me by saying "Would you like to donate to March of Dimes?" ... rather than "Hi, how are you today" (never mind with a smile). Nothing else was said, that was her greeting. Sure, fine. As the credit card transaction was completing, her manager (or so it seemed, a heavy guy with buzz cut) walked up. Never acknowledges the customer (me) once. Instead, he starts rapping with her. She raps with him in response while somehow managing mounting up enough energy to pull the credit card receipt from the machine and handing to me. Again, no acknowledgement to the customer who's HELPING TO PAY THEIR SALARY ... no "thank you" never mind "have a nice day". And it's not like I wasn't polite. Instead I always answered with a "Thank you" or "No thank you". What a great impression, no? Why would I ever go back?? Especially if I can order the same thing on Amazon or find it elsewhere??? read more

We were looking for a tent (Yes, in the middle of January) on a Sunday afternoon and this place was a complete mess. Someone was tagging snow gear at a discount and it was mismarked all over the place. The size L women's pants could have easily fit my pet chihuahua (even if she lifted weights). I went there on the 18th of March 2020. I was went to find a wind breaker and a tach flashlight. I was in there for over 45 min. When I got there, some guy asked me "are you here for ammo" before letting me in. I told him I wasn't. I went to look at the windbreakers. You can't try them on unless you're lucky enough to find an employee who has a key to UNLOCK THE RACK. That took forever. Same with sweat pants and shorts. After 45 min of "shopping", I was ready to check out. Remember, a guy on the front ONLY asked about ammo. I take the flashlight I wanted to the cashier, right by the firearms. She rings me up and asks "are you paying cash?" I said no, showed her the empty cash slot in my wallet. She said "we only take cash". I was stunned. I had spent 45 min in there and was ready to spend. No plastic??? One would think that during this coronavirus stuff that CASH would be the last on their minds. I ask her "why didn't you yell me and the other customers here how we are going to pay?" Her answer "call corporate. That's pretty bad. Shopping for 45 min to learn that you can't use a CC? Big 5, you've blamed a "power outage". Strange because I live close by. Regardless, you should've had an employee at the DOOR asking "how will you pay?" You didn't care. Shop all day and then get turned away because you don't have $240 in cash. I understand the coronavirus has made thing hard. If you can't help us, close the store! I would REALLY like my 45 min back. I needed some free weights and a medicine ball and this place is close to my house so decided to go. Before going I checked online for coupons and on their website if you sign up to be part of their e-newsletter you get 10% off right away! They have basic sporting equipment- the place is small which tons of crap everywhere. Its pretty hard to walk around to browse at anything. I probably would have preferred to go to Sports Authority or something bigger but the coupon helped. They obviously don't have enough people working there was there was 2 people ringing with tons of people in line getting annoyed. So I was on a man hunt for knee high orange socks for my son's flag football. We were leaving Oakridge to go to Sports Chalet but I thought why not look for something in the area we were in and thank god there was a Big 5. It was reallly close to the mall so that was good. It has a parking lot to park in so that was good too but when me and the kids walked in boy oh boy was it a catastrophe! It looked like a tornado hit the store and they just stacked up everything just to stack up everything. I mean, I can't believe that the Manager is okay with the store even looking like that. An had what we wanted in stock, as well as much more. The store manager breza, even made our exchange hassle free !!!! We even spent more money there. I wish i would of spent the $400.00 dollars at this big 5. Rather than the store on monterey rd. My fiancee and I went in to the store on blossom hill today 6/25/20 when they opened to buy an inflatable boat. The shorter older Hispanic man was rude making comments on what my fiancee was wearing and then turning around to whisper to the other man standing behind him saying "did you see this?" Pointing at my fiancee. Not only was that completely disrespectful but also very unwelcoming as he starred at us the entire time we were shopping there. I've been shopping here off and in for years. Less so now that Bass Pro Shop opened nearby. This last time, I went looking for sneakers. The place is always very tightly packed with merchandise. You feel suffocated compared to newer and much bigger stores like Dick's or Bass Pro. The shoe rep was not motivated to help. And his information didn't seem that complete or believable. So I tried a pair of shoes off the shelf myself. Then went to another counter for a different item and no one showed any interest to help. So my wife and I finally went to the check out. Of course they had some register issues. Some error on the display. We had to change registers since the guy in front of us needed something from the back and there was no one to help. So the cashier just left. At the new register, the girl was very cold and unfriendly. No hello or Thank you. I guess it was a combination of all these issues that finally made me decide to write this review after all these years. We have many more choices in the area now. All with bigger, more spacious show floors and friendlier staff. read more

No customer service. We bought 3 pairs of shoes and a few other things right before Christmas. One of the boots we bought was not only a mix match size but also both were left feet. We didn't notice because the cashier looked at them when we purchased them and when we gave them as a gift, we found out. So I take them back to exchange for the right size but of course they didn't have them in stock. They had another boot that looked just like it so when we went to do the exchange they were twice as much as we paid. They won't discount it even with the same coupon we used to buy all the other stuff just to make it fair. Didn't offer a 10% courtesy nothing. I asked for the store manager and they wouldn't give me her name or when she would be working. It was their cashiers fault and should of been caught when we purchased it. Now we look like a jackass giving messed up gifts. And now I need to drive around and find the right boots to make this gift right again. They didn't care about helping or making things right. I went in yesterday looking for a weight vest that was 10-15lbs. First of all I had to climb over everything on the floor to even find some of the vests they had,and then when I asked a employee if they had any he laughed at me and said well they don't make anything under 20lbs it's not and then just chuckled. We walked through here while waiting for our Olive Garden table to come up. We asked about non-leather shoes. The manager handed me a couple. I looked at one, and the tag said leather. The other two weren't tagged, but since he was wrong about the first one, I couldn't trust him enough to buy shoes there. I couldn't find them so I went and asked for help. She went on the intercom and said "sales assistant to exercise please". I waited for 10 minutes before calling my Boyfriend to come in and help me. We waited around until another girl came and walked to where they should be. Then she went around and asked 3 other people where they were before we ended up leaving. Upon hearing what I needed, grabbed the items from the appropriate department, applied the barcode for the items I was purchasing and rang me up with no problems. Been coming to this store for years... They pretty much have what your looking for if it's basic sports equipment. Nothing 'high-end', like Golf clubs for instance. They just carry so many items, it's impossible for them to specialize in anything. They have sales every week and decent prices on their tennis/jogging shoes which is what I usually get when I go here. You should know what you looking for when you get in as the sales people are in general, clueless high school students. Kinda like going into frys or home depot. Decent selection of work out cloths as well. You can go here to get your sporting stuff or across the street and deal with the Oakridge parking lot mess... read more
