I was searching for some soccer shoes. I was hoping to get some shoes on our vacation because we don't really have a sporting goods store in Hawaii. We searched on Yelp and found that Big5 was close to where we were staying. Big 5 is a pretty big store. They have equipment and supplies for all types of sports. I saw that the shoes were in the back so I immediately walked back there. I found some that looked interesting so I looked around to see if someone was working in the shoe department. I didn't see anyone. I waited for a bit because maybe they were in the back. No one came so I went to the front cashier and asked him if I could get some help. He said he would send someone to me. After waiting for a bit more, no one came. I just decided to try the one that they had on the shelf since it was my size. I just tried it on and took note of what size I was. After that, we just walked out. No one came to help and the guy I asked was still in the front. It's like he was the only one working. Sad business read more

Went to this store on January 02 23 , and have to just sum it up as "will never go back" When came in , two individuals at counter in early pm we sitting down playing on their phones. I spent about 20 minutes looking for the item I wanted , and luckily I found them , as nobody was on floor to ask questions I went to pay , two cashiers still sitting had me wait about 2 min before I made some noise and they noticed me. And they didn't seem to happy I was needing to check out. No word , individual grabbed items and scanned them. When I asked if could us internet coupon , I received "ya" , I asked if need the bar code on phone blown up , no response. The price didn't seem to adjust ( but it did ) , so I asked is that with discount , another "ya" with seriously upset look. When I was done , I said "thank you" , which was replied by a "sure" Summed up - no greeting or help on the floor - 3 words ya ya and sure Honestly , I almost immediately returned the items , but with the discount it was a good price. However , I will go across the street to Dick's next time or drive the extra 15 min one way to avoid this location We would honestly give this a zero star if possible , won't be back , and hope others either go some place else or receive service as a customer read more

There will be 3 guys at the counter talking to each other ... looking directly at you while you stand at the knife counter ( which is about 15ft away ) and will NOT acknowledge you in the least . Ladies, what if your husband or boy friend wore woman's shoes in public? My $100+ Chaco sport sandals had been given me trouble when worn for 4 straight days at Disneyland. The crisscross pattern in the cushion of the sandals irritated the bottom of my feet, whenever grains of sand got stuck. Had to use a knife to extract the tiny pebbles at the end of the day. Saturday I got the Big 5 Sunday paper ads, and checked out the Northside Seaview River sandals. Went to the internet site, and entered the shoe name, zip code. Individual stores and location pop up with message: 'Low stock, please call store for availability'. Walked over to Big 5 as soon as they opened at 9am Saturday, with Sunday ads in hand. The $10 men's sandals size 8 were charcoal straps against a black cushion. No wonder they were marked down from $30, as the sandals were ugly and the wide straps clunky looking! Had an employee in the back room to get me a woman's size 9 of the same sandal, which came in with thin aqua blue straps, against a light gray cushion. Fit like a glove. Took it to the cashier, who verified with the manager that she could mark down the price from $30 to $17, the price for the next day Sunday. Walked 2 miles round trip to the library to test out the flat sport sandals. No problem. Got some second glances from some of the ladies. Came back to Big 5 at 8:30pm that evening. Big mistake, as the sales associate was preparing to carry a boxing bag set, complete with stand all the way to a customer's car in the parking lot. Next in line was an Indian family awaiting the associate to use a dolly to roll out a heavy boxed basketball set to their car. Got another $30 woman size 9 Northside Seaview River Sandal on sale for $17 that Saturday evening from the storage area in the back, courtesy of the sales associate. Same sandal selling for $30 on Amazon. Fast forward one week to the following Saturday. Checked out the $35 Coleman Drift river sandal in Sunday's paper on sale for $20. Again looked at the men's version with wide dark blue straps against a black cushion. So clunky and ugly! Looked at the woman's size 9 version with thin medium gray straps against a light gray cushion. Tried them on and these were even more comfortable than the Northside sandals. Both times had to come one day early prior to the Sunday sale of the sandal, as inventory very limited. Men's tennis shoes and running shoes come in bright red, orange, yellow, baby blue, turquoise, lime green and white, while these closeout men's sandals come only in black, dark blue, or dark brown. You ever seen men's white sandals? They say it's a man's world. But not when it comes to sports sandals, where the woman's sandals are more colorful and are less clunky looking than the men's sandals of the same model. And if you are a guy trying on women's sandals, be warned that the largest size women's sandals they have here are women's size 10, which is equivalent to a men's size 8.5. So if you have feet any larger you are SOL! Wore women's shoes in public and wife has not divorced me -yet! read more

I see I'm not the only one experiencing bad customer service here by reading other reviews. I bought men's basketball shoes but they started hurting my foot. I tried to return the shoes but they wouldn't take them back because I didn't have the box anymore. Who keeps those boxes? I asked the girl about the return policy. Nowhere in there talks about boxes. I told her, what I bought were the shoes, not the box. That the so called 'merchandise' I bought were the shoes and now I want to return them, with the receipt. She still wouldn't take them back. I really don't like Dick's sporting goods or those big box stores. But I must say, I will not be returning to this place. Just ordered new shoes from Amazon. I have seen the staff turnover multiple times over the years at this location, but one thing seems to stay constant, not very helpful and not very friendly. If you can find somebody to ask for help, it always seems like an imposition. One time I was there, and I asked for help with 22LR. There was only one person who was able to help, but she said she was going on break for an hour, like I was supposed to stand there for an hour and wait for her? Last time I was there, I asked a guy if they had something in stock, he responded with a curt "umm No", and walked away. Finally, they are overpriced, eg. selling high-demand items at 25% over MSRP. Might as well just go to REI across the street, so I don't expect this store to last more than a year. read more

Came here today and purchased about $106 worth of merchandise. The cashier Melissa is a rude person. She waited on a white male that did not even buy anything and spent so much time with this dude, even when the dude was walkingaway from here and said thank you she was still talking to the dude. I was not sure where the line was so I stood at where I thought was the beggining of the line was, where they have the blue circle sticker that stated 6ft apart. And then another white male came in and was asking me where the line was and I replied I was not sure, and he then proceeded to stand behind me where he saw the other 6 ft sticker circle on the floor. When Melissa Was done with that other white person she was entertaining she proceeded to the front and opened her cash register and that's when she started being rude to me. Instead of saying I can help the next person in line she proceeded to insult me and said " well if you don't come to me then people are going to cut in front of you " I was dumb founded and caught off guard because first of all the store was not that busy. It was me and another white guy behind me. I said, what? And she said, if you don't come here then people are going to cut in front of you! She repeated" I was still confused but was getting irate at this time. I was like. I came didn't I? She never said a word, nor said thank you for my purchase. I was still dumbfounded how she treated me, when I went to my car, I went back and asked her name, she responded rudely " my name is on the receipt" I then proceeded to call the 800 number for big 5 and spoke to a person and she said she will make sure that my complaint will be taking in. Not sure what that means. No apologies!! I will call again and will make sure that my complaint will be taking seriously. I seriously think this Melissa person hates brown people. Because when I went back to ask for her name she was so nice to that white person that was behind me.. racist much?! I see why this location has some crappy reviews. It's all the service or lack of it. The store is decent in size and pretty clean. That's the end of the pluses. Walked in looking for some cheap water shoes and stopped at the cashier/desk (3 associates all talking and hanging out) to see where they might be. Received the look of why are you bothering us while we talk and than received it's over by the dressing rooms in a dry response. Walk up to checkout and the shoe department calls to which the cashier picks up and says what's up shoe department. Really? This place isn't that damn big...???? No service or pls hold or anything. She continues to converse with the shoe department and towards the end decides it might be good to multitask and ring us up. Now I don't expect stellar service but damn!!!!! Smh read more

Worst store ever. I bought soccer cleat for my son and it fell apart after only wearing several times. Came to return and they were asking for the original box or receipt even they can easily check it out in their system. To top it off, the store manager called himself Mike throughout the process acted like a total jerk. Cannot believe customers were being treated this way in 2022! Big 5 is my go-to store if I want to save money and be ignored. It's hard to get assistance because there aren't too many people working here, and they're usually not roaming the store. But the prices are fairly decent. I got a nicely sleeping bag for $25 and a Coleman 3-person tent that was sale for $30. The same tent was selling for $48 on Amazon! Some of the stock isn't that great in quality. For instance, a bunch of water shoes that I looked at had their insoles glued with cheap glue that was already peeling off. Bleh. In short, this place is hit or miss. But they sometimes have sales on decent stuff (with ads in the newspaper a few times a week), so it's worth coming in if you know what you're after. read more

Not even worth the trip. The clothing selection was terrible! There was basically nothing even worth looking at and an even more abysmal sale. I was looking for Nike pro shorts (norts...yes this is a thing) to add to my recently started collection. What Big 5 is actually good for: Maybe come here if you want swimsuits. They have tons of speed and body glove...and some of the body glove items were on sale. Shoes...they have a larger selection. Actual sports equipment. I was getting a jump rope for my little brother's PE class (online) and I found what I needed. When I was ready to check out, there was no one at the cash register even though I saw two guys there when I walked in like 7 minutes earlier. I wait for about 2 minutes till someone comes by and is holding a red bull. As he's helping me out, none of his attention is on the transaction he's making--he's talking loudly to his coworker in an aisle nearby. I say thank you after I grab my stuff, and I got no acknowledgement. I get it: it's like a ghost town at a lot of stores right now and it gets really boring, so I understand why workers wanna talk. But customer service is still a big deal. I jump at any chance to get out of the house and not just buy stuff off Amazon. Especially nowadays, I get really excited to just walk in stores. But how I was ignored at this store kinda killed the experience. read more

I came here expecting to find some bikes. I was really surprised and disapointed that Big 5 does not sell bikes at all! I thought Big 5 would have bikes, since they are a 'Sporting Goods' store...lol. I did notice 2 bikes hanging on the wall, but I doubt they are on sale. The parking lot here is terrible. The setup is kind of wierd, so it was confusing how to enter and leave the plaza. read more

Today's visit was great, a 4 star but most of the past visits have been a 2 star. This visit ,the place was mostly clean and picked up and I found my sale item easily. They have great sales in their ads. Shawn, the cashier was friendly and polite and helpful. Now, what I normally experience at this store. The place is usually a mess, the shoes are shrewn everywhere, off the tables, off the shelves, out of boxes. Sleeping bags on the floor. Clothes off hangers, many things out of boxes with the boxes strewn on the floor. Can be hard to find the sale items, they don't always put it out in the open, you have to hunt for items. I have experienced cashiers talk to each other and ignore customers, have the attitude that the customer is bothering them and not helpful, they leave you to struggle in finding something. read more

This review is for an employee named Brian or Bryan at the store in the evening of Saturday 12/7. First of all, I loved this store! I live close by and have been coming here for pretty much all my family's sporting goods needs in the past 18 years. All my weights, our family's tents and camping items and most of my son's soccer balls/shoes and baseball stuffs throughout the years were all bought here. That changed on the evening of Saturday 12/7. I walked in to buy a set of junior's golf set for my son. As soon as I walked in, I felt something in my eye. I rubbed it a bit and still felt it in there. So I decided to use the bathroom in the back to wash it out. When I walked through the door in the back towards the bathroom, I saw a guy sitting in the break area. He is probably in his late 20s or early 30s, a bit chubby, with feet on the desk and playing on his phone. As a courtesy, I asked him: "can I use the bathroom?" He looked at me in an annoyed way and said "it's not for public use." I told him that I am a long-time customer and I have used the bathroom before. I then ask in a polite way "could I use the bathroom please?" He said firmly "no." I asked again: "I have been a long time customer, could I use the bathroom please?" With a slight smirk on his face (as if he enjoyed me begging him), he said: "no. I am on break." All the time without getting his feet off the desk. Well, to the mangers of this store, district manager and Big5 corporate office: I am not coming back to any Big5 store for the rest of my life. This is it! There are many options for a customer to shop for sporting goods nowadays and I am giving my business to Dick's Sporting Goods, right across the street. I really liked your store and have been a customer for 18 years. Your store has strong brand in me and my family. Unfortunately, Brian or Bryan showed today that he is the weakest link in your business and doesn't know how to treat a customer. read more

This store is poorly run. Staff is always new and has no clue what's going on. Selection is limited. Disorganized shelves, etc. Asked the manager if Big 5 had plans to stop selling guns. He said, "no way. We make too much money off of them." While I appreciate the honesty, it makes no sense that a store that sells children's recreational equipment continue to sell items that are a significant public health hazard. First thing you notice about this Big 5 is that it's a pretty basic/jenky looking store in the middle of a jenky looking parking lot. All things considered though, this place is always great for deals and quantity. I came here recently to check out good bargains on camelbaks and hydration packs, and I noticed that this Big 5 had everything I was looking for in stock. That's a huge plus, especially when places are always out of items. Business is pretty slow here and so you might not see many customers or even employees. However if you catch one, he or she will probably help you out gladly. Tl;dr this is a decent store to buy your sporting goods and outdoor activity gear. I had a bad experience today at Big 5. I bought a boxing punching bag yesterday and wanted to do a price adjustment. The manager, Joshua says he can't do it. He says I need to bring the item back. Think about it, it's over 70+ pounds and it's not logical to bring it back to do an exchange. I feel he was just giving me a hard time. Well, I purchased another punching bag and was able to apply my coupon. Return the bag at the spot. A manager should be able to think logically because we wasted 22 mins to complete this transaction. One employee has to bring the bag out and takes it right into the stock room. Sorry, but this does not make sense to me! read more

Service: 1 star. Just about as bad as Fry's Electronics in Sunnyvale. Selection: 2 stars. Mediocre, poor for some items. Prices: 3 stars. Average, a little cheaper for some items. Verdict: This store sucks. Service is absolutely atrocious. You would think that employees in collared shirts and ties might understand the basics of customer service, but these don't. The workers made no effort to assist customers except when asked for help (there was no, "Can I help you find anything?"). They mostly just stood around and chatted with one another about their personal lives. This might be okay if the floor were properly maintained... not the case. The entire selection of shin guards was in disarray. The Perfect Push-Up and Perfect Pull-Up had no price labels or price display. The weight plates were scattered. The UnderArmour was randomly split between two racks a good distance apart. Price tags were missing from some shoes on the display wall. So there's plenty to do; no reason for the employees to be standing around flirting with each other. And if they'd get their thumbs out of their butts, the merchandise floor might not look like it came out of mine. Out of my butt. In case that wasn't clear. Buying shoes here is especially painful, because the majority of the shoes are kept in the back. That means the customer is forced to flag down one of the inept employees and ask if a specific shoe is available in a specific size. Then said inept employee checks the stock and reports his/her findings. Not only is this terribly inefficient, but customers are at the mercy of the incompetent workers. If there's more than one customer competing for attention, forget about it. The only reason I come here is for sweat-wicking shirts (Dri-Fit, UnderArmour, etc). The selection is so-so, but it seems like there's usually a brand on sale. Today Everlast compression shirts were on sale: $9 for short-sleeve, $14 for long-sleeve. That's a pretty good deal, as many brands usually cost more than twice that. I used to come here for the weekly shoe sales also, but I've learned my lesson. I bought some Denali Foraker hiking shoes, on sale for like $12. You get what you pay for. The tread is only about 25% worn, and already the soles are inexplicably falling apart. Never before had I seen shoes fall apart in this way. (And I used to wear off-brand shoes from PayLess!) Big 5 carries some crappy brands. You're better off going to Sports Authority (the artist formerly known as SportMart), which is itself not great. read more

Given all the negative reviews, I guess we've been lucky with this Big 5. The staff have always been nice to us, even though we don't spend much and don't come in very often. Checkout is easy, with a smile and "thanks", which is better customer service than a lot of places these days. The environment tends to be a bit on the messy side, but that's no problem when prices are this good. As long as we can find what we want, which we always have. What we get is usually very simple so I don't know how the store fares with more complex requests and focused customer service. read more
