Service is just ok. Selection can't compete w/ the big sporting good stores. What Big 5 hasn't done is cow tow to the $$$ grubbing far right nationalists. For that reason, it gets my support. B5 has more of a no-frills vibe that I enjoy. read more

I walk in 5 minutes before closing . I stop and ask cashier are you open . She says five minutes to closing . The woman at the counter (employee) and another employee talking . I said great where are resistance bands? She says down there to the corner on the right . I knew exactly what I wanted but I do not shop at big 5. So I'm walking straight to resistance bands following her directions to location I was given. while the two employees mentioned continued to talk. No problem but one of the talkers (employee ) managed to stop talking , right at 8:29 pm he made it a point to walk all the way back to me as I was already walking to cashier with my resistance bands in hand to pay to tell me they were closed . lol very annoying. He stopped to meet me on my way back to tell me store closed I wasn't Even shopping. I had found the bands . Yet he could have made the time to show me exactly where they were when I walked in to get me out faster. I already knew what I wanted and I even announced it . Great customer service (not really). Now I know people prefer Amazon . This is why jobs away . Big 5 customer service and in person is why people still go to stores . I literally paid and was in my car by 8:31 pm . Here I thought Instead of ordering on Amazon let me stop at my local Big 5 to support them staying in business. Also, store closed at 8:30 pm as I'm typing this I counted 8 people walked up to store closed at 8:30 pm. This big 5 usually has what I go for, and the staff is usually on point with helping me find it if they do. It have it. I usually deal with a Mexican gal kind of on the shorter side who if should be a manager! She is an asset to this company and location! read more

I know why they have such a low rating. The words are customer service. I brought a pair of shoes back that had been worn once by one of my special needs clients. They were the wrong size. The manager said we can not take them back because the have to be in selling condition to return. I was in retail for many years. This was very poor service. I have gotten much better service before. I never thought I would leave a review for a sporting goods store. Great customer service is GREAT customer service.. I went in today to pick up some shotgun shells today but I just missed the on duty person who could sell them to me. I was helped by I believe an assistant manager named jubilee. Jubilee after explaining to me that she couldn't sell them to me took it upon herself to track down the shells for me at another store who had an on duty person to sell the ammo. Jubilee even had the other person double check stock so I wouldn't waste a trip. 200.00 later I'm a happy camper and ready for the range Sunday! I had a great experience shopping here. Unlike the Rowland Heights location, the employees in the Whittier store were friendly and very helpful. I was immediately asked if I needed help. I can't remember his name to give him credit, but the employee that assisted me was very nice and answered all my questions. And he was also fast, quickly getting the several pairs of shoes I wanted to try on. The shoe section was somewhat busy, but he and another employee made time to check on every customer. The Whittier Big 5 location is also much bigger, with a better selection. Skip the Rowland Heights store and do your sporting goods shopping here instead. read more

As Im writing this review I will also complaint to corp about how bad the service is here i came to purchase an item and whomever the dude working the sporting arms (gate, gay) couldn't get his name correctly. section is totally blew me off by telling me, someone will be right with you, he lock himself in the lol office; came out 5mins later, ask med again if i needed help. He proceed to help me and instead of ringing me up he gives the item to josh the cashier working the front by himself. Dude gate is the manager his poor customer service and work ethics from perspective view of body language , is someone that can kill your business. dude seems miserable in there. I used to be an assistant manager for Big 5, so I know I was trained in depth on customer service, ESPECIALLY in the shoe department, where about 40% of our sales came from. To bad NO ONE said hi. From when I entered, to passing the guy in shoe shoe department THREE TIMES, nothing. I thought I'd go to a brick and mortar to try to support Big 5 and buy some Asics there instead of Amazon, even though Big 5 is more expensive... I though, "Hey. I built this portable hoop and it was the hardest thing ever . The parts didn't even fit correctly I had to go out of my way to make it work and took me almost 7 hours to put together . First of all, I hope supervisory staff can get back to me so I can update my complaints with positive feedback. I like shopping here but if my opinions are not wanted and I can't park my bike without a hassle, the situation is stressful. My complaints are two. First, I returned bike lights sold in a set. The rear one worked, but the front one did not turn on for me. Today's manager with the name tag of David refunded my purchase, but he did not make any effort to collect information about the item to better inform himself or purchasing. In my case, I had a great deal of inconvenience to return the item--I had to ride my bike back over to the store. A refund without any apparent concern makes the inevitable lemon item we might all buy from time to time into a whole glass of unsweetened lemon juice. I was also concerned that maybe I wasn't reading the directions correctly, but David was not conversational and did not collect information about why I was specifically making the return. Second complaint- I asked for the status of my previous grievance made to management at the store regarding the substandard bike rack that was unusable for bikes with my type of lock. Not only did he say he had never heard any such complaints, he said it was not the store's concern. He said it was the property management's problem. I acknowledged that but the interface for improvements occurs between tenants with requests and the property management/landlord. He shirked it off. He said I was the only one with a complaint about the bike rack. Just like with the lights I returned, he made NO effort to collect information or to hear what my specific issue was that made the bike rack in front of their store unusable. There is at least one rack in the same shopping center that is a style that accepts bikes with locks like mine, but that rack is very far away from Big 5. On another note, I mentioned to a different manager the accessibility problem in spots of the store where aisles were not even aisles and were only about 16 inches wide. My body and belongings tangled to get where I needed to go. The manager to whom I spoke said, essentially, "This is the set up." read more

I haven't stepped into a Big 5 Spotting's good in a long time and when you walk in one, it seems like that place has never changed and everything is still quite the same. One thing noted though is they have lots of variety in what they sell from baseball to yoga equipment to almost anything that has to do with sports. I came here on my lunch break just because I had some time to kill and I needed to get a speed rope which is just like a jump rope but you can go way faster than you were, when you were a child. I got it for $4.99 and I have been to Target and another different Target to find this speed rope that I was about to give up looking for one. Ehh Maybe I should of went to a Sporting Goods store in the first place !! But I finally got and I was in this store for 10 minutes just browsing and looking around, everything is very sectional so you will be able to find all you need in a specific sport quite fast and efficient!! Big 5 doesn't get four or give starts because the inside still looks like we are in the 80's...it's time for an update ! ! read more

I bought a pair of running shorts at the store in Whittier CA on 9/18. By mid October the waist seam had unraveled revealing the elastic. I took them back to the store today looking for an exchange. They said they could not exchange without a receipt. I left the store found my credit card bill with the transaction and took it back to the store. They still would not allow an exchange. They said I had to have the store receipt. I left the store once again and looked on line for their return policy. If I could give this zero stars I would, the woman named KARISSA has a VERY rude and bothered tone. She is not a good representation of this company or if she gets annoyed from a single question. I came here with my father and purchased items that showed a discounted price from what was in store and I made a comment saying that online it showed a difference price. She was QUICK WITH THE ATTITUDE to say that it was probably an online error or something. I'm not one to complain on Yelp. I usually leave positive reviews, but this lady's tone with me was just straight out RUDE, when I paid for my stuff I even said "ok geez" after she said it because she was super aggressive with her answer/tone. Even though this Big 5 is smaller than most others I've been to, they seem to be pretty good at this location. I haven't had any problems here. I've come for recreational equipment, baseball equipment, my Bearpaws (when they're on sale), and my swim essentials. If they don't have an item I'm looking for, they will call other local stores to see if they have it and have it put on hold for me. You can also look online for your weekly ad and print coupons out directly from their website. I stumbled across some folding rocking chairs on their website and called to see if they had any left. Big 5 always has what I need from snow gear, to fishing gear, and even sports equipment. They have excellent customer service, always willing to help you out. Prices are reasonable here, not to over priced. They have good selection of sporting equipment such as soccer, baseball, golf, basketball. Fishing section has a lot to choose from such as poles, hooks, lures, Bait. Camping selection if you are going to be staying out doors. Can't forget to mention they sell fishing licenses and even passes for snowboarding/ skiing. Good sporting good store, there aren't many around anymore and this one gets the job done. read more

Ive been going to this Big 5 sporting goods for a couple years now and this is the second time I've had a disagreement with the employees there because of their rude and disrespectful attitude, first of all I came in simply just to pay for a spot for my hunting trip, I told the cashier the exact number I wanted and she completely ignored me and went off to ask the manager for help we stood back and let other customers go ahead of us since it seemed like they were having a problem, Evelyn which I believe was the manager there was completely rude about the whole situation with out trying to cancel or give us a refund option she went ahead and told us we had to pay for the license and spot number we didn't ask for and she said that if we didn't pay for it, it would take up to a month for him to be able to apply for other spots. Evelyn said she could call a number to cancel but that it would take to long so she wasn't going to go out of her way to do it, so I said that the cashier was the one that messed up why would we have to fix something that they messed up on. This is where Evelyn became aggressive and said we had to pay for it and there was nothing she can do. So we paid and left very upset with a spot that's useless to us. These folks need some customer service training. They are so busy gossiping with each other that god forbid you need help. I had a handful of stuff and instead of offering to hold at registers they just stare at you. Had to ask for a different shoe size and the girl stared at me with the death look. I went in to the store and wasn't greeted by neither of the 2 girls that were there at the entrance. I had someone approached me (he has helpful). Overall experience wasn't good. I went to pay and I waited til someone came to the register. An employee passes by and looked at me and kept walking. Wasn't even told that someone would be right with me. Girl at the register needs to work on her social skills (unfriendly personality). A simple hi how are you or thank you for coming in would have made it a lot better. read more

The service here is pretty slow compared to others I've been too.. 5 people on the floor 3 guys 2 girls. The 3 guys were huddled together giggling and talking wile the two girls were working and getting things done. I'm assuming one of the guys was a manager so that's why this was allowed. A customer had to walk over and break up the giggle circle to ask for a shoe. I had to do the same. So I just left and went to famous foot ware which is 2 doors over.
