I decided to shop at the Big 5 Sporting Goods in La Mirada, due to the store near me not having my size in a specific athletic shoe. I called the store and spoke with Karlie, who searched and found the shoe size in question. Karlie was very professional and energetic. She stated that she would hold the shoes. I arrived the next day and met with Karlie, who was friendly and outgoing. I also met Chris, who worked in the shoe department. Both Karlie and Chris made my shopping a wonderful experience. So wonderful that I bought a second pair of shoes. This store was very organized and clean, especially the shoe department. I also found the cashier, David, to be very friendly. I came in today to buy my son some soccer cleats and didn't have a mask on me. I was told I needed one to shop. I said I'd be happy to put one on if they had a disposable one for me. Here's my list of sporting good stores in order of preference. 1. Sport Chalet 2. Dick's Sporting Goods 3. Big 5 Sporting Goods 4. Sports Authority For some reason, Big 5 Sporting Goods locations seem a lot smaller than the competition. The merchandise is present, but there's not enough wiggle room, therefore not overly spacious. If you get claustrophobic in here, I surely wouldn't blame you. I find the customer service here more than satisfactory. Also, the prices are more expensive, so I try to purchase online first, unless it's something I need right away. Today's impulse buy is the Massage Bar by Go Fit. I like this company a lot, based on the Foam Rollers that I've purchased from them in the past. For those of you that work hard on your squats, legs, or thighs - this Massage Bar is perfect. Unlike, the Foam Rollers, you can actually be stationary in a comfortable position to massage stiff and sore muscles. Areas of discomfort and pain can rest in the neck, back (upper, middle, lower), glutes, forearms, hamstrings, quads, IT band, and calves. I never spend enough time warming up or stretching afterwards so this type of equipment is a life saver. For anyone that hits the gym frequently, I highly recommend this, along with a Foam Roller. I came here Friday evening to purchase an adventure pass before my Saturday morning hike in Cleveland National Forest. When I walked in there was not anyone standing at the registers so I patiently waited. The cashier appeared with a customer whom I presume she was assisting before I arrived. She promptly rang him up and out he went. I was very surprised when she told me that they were sold out of daily AND annual adventure passes! Another woman came to the front...maybe the store manager? Anyways, she thought Walmart sells them. The fucking Philippine manager is very UNPROFESSIONAL and should be FIRED treated me and my husband with so much disrespect. We walked out with nothing because of her. You need to retrain her on how to communicate to customers and not slam the door literally on our faces. How rude was she. Came in today to see if theh had any snow apparel left. Its a little late in the season so they really didnt have more than a few things. BUT they did have a small simple exercise bike that caught my eye. They had one in a box but assembling it didnt sound fun, so they let me buy the floor model! And they even helped put it in my car! If I could give a zero, then I would. David the store manager has not customer service skills. I went in to purchase my daughter a pair of roller skates but all they had was a display. I asked if the skate could be cleaned before I purchased the skate. The employee said he could not clean the skate. I asked him to go and ask the manager and he came back telling me the manager said he could not and would not clean the skate but they did sell a cleaner if I would like to purchase one. I went to talk to the manager myself and he first said the skate was not even dirty. I told him I wanted a clean pair of skates and wanted the skate cleaned. I asked him if he could clean them and he said no. He said he could give me a discount on the cleaner and the skate but the skate would not be cleaned. I told him I did not want to purchase the cleaner but did want a clean skate. I asked if he could use one of his cleaners and he said no because it would be a waste. I ended walking out of the store and told my daughters to put all of the items we were going to purchase back. The manager did not care. I drove to the store in Whittier and the manager there told me he would have cleaned the skate for us but they did not have it at their store. He told me the store in Brea had a pair. I had to drive to the store in Brea and the manager there also said he would have cleaned the skate for us. They all apologized for David, but it was not their fault. They obviously cared about their customers. I spent $350.00 at the store in Brea and $50.00 at the store in Whittier. I will not be visiting the store in La Mirada ever again. All he had to do was clean the skate. I will take my business else where. read more

Before paying I stopped to browse near the register where two female employees were stationed. There was no need to eaves drop as the one who was doing about 95% of the talking was not being discreet or quiet by any means. She was scolding the other employee in front of the customers in regards to an error she made. She continued to badger her as if no one else was around. A conversation better had in the privacy of the office or stock room. Even after the employee acknowledged her error, the other kept repeating herself, almost bullying the other to point where she looked pretty agitated yet helpless. I made eye contact with the scolder and asked if she was the manager. Yes, she replied. I asked if she felt it was appropriate to be scolding her employee in front of customers. She quickly informed me, without breaking the tone of her voice that she was not scolding her but rather she was training her. I pointed out the difference between training and belittling but to no avail. She just continued to defend her behavior, loud and clear. I told her she didn't have to raise her voice at me. "I'm not raising my voice at you, I'm telling you that I'm training her." I asked for her name which she proudly gave to me. No need to post it here though. Needless to say, they didn't get any of my money today. I'll be taking a drive over to Dick's tomorrow. read more

I came here with the bf to get some things he need for his weekend basketball games. The list included new shoes, another knee brace, and a couple pairs of shorts. He found everything he needed. We went at 9pm on Sunday, an hour before closing during their extended holiday hours. Service was pretty good. The woman who helped us in the shoe area was nice and there was a manager who was very helpful answering questions. Big 5 has much cheaper prices than Dick's Sporting Goods for a lot of the same things. The Adidas basketball shoes he got were an everyday low price and both shorts were holiday sales. In addition, we showed our coupons on our iPhones and got 20% off the shoes and brace. The deal getter in me was very happy. read more

If you want to get sports gear for a discount Big 5 is the place to be! But keep in mind that when you pay for these things at a cheaper price, be prepared to suffer the consequences. Only $40 for a backpacking tent?! O-M-G. $40 for hiking shoes?! Even better. They have such a variety of items for all of your needs. There's a lot of known brand name items and some more unknown generic brands. I ended up buying hiking shoes for only $40. Wore them out to my trip to Bryce canyon. None of the shoes I tried on were even comparable to those of REI (obviously...sigh) but for the price they are worth it. Unfortunately when you pay such a price, you should expect your shoes to somehow get ruined. Yup, mine did and now has a hole on the sole from a rock. Wanted a hydration pack, but the store didn't have a good variety of what I wanted. Will be back when I want to save money on camping gear! read more

The first was on a pair of Starter brand running shoes that I got for just under $25.....Then today, I purchased a new Smith and Wesson watch which was on sale. 5 stars all the way. I may be too lenient with my ratings, but when I have a good experience and nothing goes wrong, then I feel they should deserve all 5 stars. This location was very clean and organized. I was offered assistance by 2 different employees while I was browsing in the store, which is always a plus in my book. I came down here to purchase some workout gloves and a fitness ball I can use as my chair to help fix my posture. This ball has done wonders already! 65 CM Valeo Body Ball is great for exercising, stretching, and makes a perfect computer/tv chair for my room. I was lucky enough to buy this on sale for $12 and with a 10% coupon I got it for $10. They have other fitness balls that go up to $40 but there is no need to pay the extra cash because I'm a light weight. I read a customer review online stating that the customer has had this same ball for 3 years. Hopefully my ball can stay put that long, but it was $10 so I wouldn't mind purchasing another one if it popped for some reason. If you take a look at my past reviews, you'll see that I don't post too many reviews below four or five stars. But I feel inclined to do that here because of my experience yesterday. I came in to get some baseball gear for my son and return a pair of running shoes I got for my wife. The cashier had a hard time with the return for some reason so a guy who I assume is the manager or asst. manager walked over. He was short with the cashier, to the point, never acknowledged me and had a crappy look on his face the entire time. That got resolved so it was off to find some cleats for my son. Well the cleats were right under a shelf that they thought would be a good idea to revamp in the middle of store hours. Don't bother to move the ladders or all the merchandise on the floor right behind the ladders, don't bother to ask if they can help me find his size, no it's fine I'll just try to get around what's already a tight space to begin with. Two ladders, two employees including the happy go lucky (not) manager, and boxes of merchandise were all hundled together in front of the cleats I was trying to find. BUT, thank you to the other customer that had already managed to squeeze between all that stuff while finding a size she was looking to ask and find the size I was looking for. Then, after that I stood by the shoes to try and get a pair of workout shoes for me but there were crickets, no one to help me get the a pair from the back because the baseball shelf redesigners were too busy talking about an employee that called out because she had homework to do and couldn't come in. So the happy go lucky (not) manager was totally talking crap to the other redesigner the person that called out should have known and been more responsible and that she had the day off prior and so on and so on. He was right, but not right to talk that way about another employee behind their back and in front of customers. I never did get my shoes instead I took the time to drive over to the La Habra location where I got much better service. To the happy go lucky manager: If you're unhappy working there, find a profession where you are happy. It's obvious you're annoyed to be doing the job you have. Sale prices and sale signs mean nothing to this location! I went in today to specifically buy a pair of snow gloves for my daughter, the sale sign said "$8.99 AS ADVERTISED" on the rack of gloves. Perfect, I thought! Once at the register they rang up $20. So I mentioned the sale sign and showed the associate the entire rack of gloves with the sale sign. The associate said "those are the wrong gloves, the sale is for a different kind." Ok, then why is the rack FULL of THIS kind of glove? He continued to stand by his decision and didn't offer the sale price. I ask to talk to the manager. The Manager said the same thing. I've been a Manager for 20 years, and if I had the wrong product with the wrong sale sign, Id thank the customer, give the sale price, and FIX the fixture!! So I ask for the District Managers contact information; and the Manager refused!! What kind of service is this?!?!? I bought the gloves at full retail price, only because my daughter desperately needed them for 6th grade camp. I absolutely do not reccomend this store! And will ban Big 5 from this moment on!!! read more

Big 5 is an easy and convenient place for me to shop whenever I need some basic equipment for the sports I play. Being a smaller and less crowded store, it is easy for me to walk in and walk out with whatever I need under ten minutes. It's quick, easy, and convenient. However there are some disadvantages of shopping at Big 5. Being a lacrosse player, a not very popular sport on the West coast, it is hard for me to come across the gear I need. Being such a small store, it lacks variety of different sports and products. If I'm ever looking for a new pair of cleats, I am never able to find the ones I want or need. They do have other cleats but they aren't always the best products and are cheap compared to others. Along with that, they have no lacrosse gear or pads. It usually comes in handy to come to Big 5 whenever need something small such as a mouth guard or athletic tape. It is understandable why they do not have lacrosse gear available yet but I hope to see some in stock in the years to come. Although they don't have everything I may need, the service there is great. The employees are always around offering any help possible. Whenever I walk in, they right away welcome me and ask if I need any help at first. Probably the best f all is Big %'s prices. The cost on certain items are usually cheaper than other store's prices. By looking around, I am often able to save about $10-$20 on something I may need such as cleats, shoes, or clothes. It is an overall quite and easy place to shop where I don't usually have to worry about items being sold out, long lines, over priced items, and bad service. Whenever I need something quick, easy, and cheap, Big 5 is the place to go! read more

As far as stores go of any kind, this one is great. I went looking for wrist and arm supports for use in my work. Upon checking out, the cashier pointed out some other options I had not seen and even opened the packaging letting me try one items before purchasing. That and the fact that the item I was shown was actually a few dollars cheaper, will keep me coming back to this particular store for future purchases. Store has a good shoe selection with regular sale prices on assorted athletic shoes. I had to return a item that was too small a few days later and upon doing so, received quick, courteous service again and I was in and out quickly. For great customer service on two separate occasions, is why I am giving this store five stars. read more

This is a handy store to have so close to home. It's like the convenience store for sports. I can't believe how much they stuff in such a small space. Aisles are small and selection is limited but at least you don't have to negotiate a super huge parking lot or impersonal warehouse style ambience like walmart. read more

This place has everything u would want for Sporting Goods.. yes it is a bit crowded in areas with sporting good products, but people, every Big 5 looks like this one. I cant believe u like the store and the staff, but then grade it just 3 stars, not because of the staff or for supplying any of the sport's equipment you might need, but because of the limited room they have to display things?
