It was a 1-2 star experience at best, but they do have decent value. That said, take out food took almost an hour and they never told me it would take near that long or that I should find something else to do or buy more beers or anything like that. The vibe was pretty ghetto as well, but I guess that isn't their problem. They don't choose their patrons. The food wasn't bad, although they gave me the wrong sandwich. I ordered an au jus and they gave me a Philly. The serving sizes per $ were pretty fair, everything tasted at least decent. I've been going to Big Al's since they opened many, many years ago. The food is really good and the service, well the service is good if you prep yourself beforehand. Tucked away in what use to be a fish camp/ seafood restaurant Big Al's can be somewhat hidden. Those who know about it know exactly where it is but don't expect to see it easily passing by on Albemarle Road. Inside is sort of dark and bar or dive like. Its way overdue for some upgrades and could use some more light. The food is definitely why I keep coming back. I love the wings and the chicken tenders and their blue cheese is some of the best I've had a restaurants. Unique to Big Al's the sauce's level of heat can be adjusted to the flavors you order (i.e. BBQ, BBQ Medium, BBQ Hot, etc.). My favorite is Vesuvius which is their spiciest sauce but I do not find it too spicey. An order of fries or tots are enough for two and possibly three. Service is something to be desired. Again, if you have the proper expectations then you will not be disappointed. Some staff seem to be more lively and more hospitable than others. Stopped in for lunch with three others. We go out together for lunch every week or two. The place looked rough and it was being painted and having other work done. The parking lot has plenty of room but needs work. We actually thought it might have been closed. I rated it this way because what we ordered was really good, the waitress was super nice and the prices were way better than what we've seen pretty much everywhere else. Zero stars if I could. We waited well over 20 min to be even greeted. Our sever then took another 20+ min favoring other tables. Had attitude. Didn't tell us the "kitchen" messed up our order. I absolutely love this place! I've come here since I was a toddler and they have the best wings I've ever had in my life!!! The food is all around amazing, always fresh and delicious. The waitstaff is usually on it, even on very busy nights. They have bingo nights on Mondays, which are lots of fun! Lots of space and seating available, as well as ample parking out front. There is outdoor seating as well. There is a security guy there who makes sure things never get out of hand, since of course there is a full bar there. All of the appetizers are yummy, but the Buffalo wings are fantastic! I recommend getting an order of those, and you can get them either extra wet or saucy, or double run, which means they bake them longer and they're not as messy, but the flavor is still locked in! The ambiance is of course loud, because first and foremost it's a bar, but if that doesn't bother you much, this is a hidden gem that you must try. There are some claw machine games there for your kids to enjoy and there's lots of cool decor in the place. Long time customer for over 15 years. Big Al's messed up my order. I called and was advised to take a photo and provide my name and in my next visit they would simply comp the order. Showed up today with my name and of course the photo. Was advised that they had no proof of the phone conversation and they are under new management. Bethany suggested that they can't give away food- ridiculous and insulting!!! Absolutely would not recommend !!! Find a spot where your business and dollars spent are appreciated. If I could give this place zero starts I would. I'm sorry, I work in the restaurant industry myself so I know how to carry myself while I'm out in public. This is the second time I came and was treated VERY rudely! I did not get the name of the woman who came to our table, but the middle age black woman came to our table and asked us to leave for who knows what reason. We frequently order from Big Al's but the service and food is seriously getting worse. We often have to complain about the quality of food and have either received credits or have to be remade, which is truly unacceptable and an inconvenience. Most items are undercooked and thrown together. My last straw was last night when we went in to pickup an order and members of their staff & their friends were drunk and obviously high, standing in front of the pickup counter. They were in the way and openly wasted and refused to move. The bar staff didn't bother to ask them to move or go around to the other side of the bar away from customers or pickup line. I think this was a terrible look for the establishment and clearly shows the type of people they employ who are cooking & preparing food which explains a lot about the service and quality we often receive. Needless to say that will be my last time eating there. I understand people are allowed to do what they prefer in their extracurricular activities but to be in uniform and still representing your employer so recklessly was a huge disappointment and turnoff. Although this is a bar, I still expect a level of quality in the way my food is prepared and by whom prepares it! Inconsistent but definitely a great hang out on the East Side. Bar is usually lined up with noisy people. Music nights are enjoyable. The tots are my favorite food. Burgers are good. Waitresses usually appear over word and underpaid. Service often slow. Very safe. Security is always on hand and responsive. Customer service is horrible. They leave the phones off the hook so that no one can answer. There is no other way to place order only speaking to someone over the phone. Over the phone and in person the customer service is horrible. I've reported this issue to the company multiple times and NOTHING has changed. They even have signs at the restaurant telling the employees to not leave the phone off the hook. However they still do it . So as a company what do you need to do to ruin a smooth business and please customers. We need new employees or extra help to answer the phones. Maybe a website for customers to order. The food is great but I've experienced this so many times ,what a way to treat a loyal returning customer . I will continue to report this issues until I see a change. This place looks like a dive and maybe it is but the food is great. Of course they have a bar which remains busy. Plus they have outdoor seating on the patio. I usually sit inside on what appears to be a old short church pew or bus station bench. They have plenty of TVs to watch. The servers are ALWAYS nice as can be. I have this 2 stars because I've been to Big Al's a few times and it was great but the last few times I went it was not good. We ordered a lot of wings, a quesadilla, fries, and fried pickles. This last time the food took forever. We specifically wanted our fried pickles as an entree, they took so long and when we asked they brought them right out and they had just been made. My quesadilla was terrible. It needs to be revamped, the tortilla was more like a pita than tortilla. My wings were pretty good though and the fries were awesome. The waiter was all over the place and there we not many guests. I don't know if I will be back after these bad experiences. read more
