This is a really cool spot with some great deals between the week. I've come to BBB a few times and realized this trios that I've never done a review. The staff are always pretty chill and attentive. Your glass never runs dry or rather at the bar, I've never sat away from the bar lol. The food here is pretty good too. I've had the wings, Chicken Pot Pie and this trip the Haddock Sandwich ALL really good. My work wife got a grilled chicken sandwich which was good too. Great spot overall and feels like an Irish pub and the decor to boot. The British Phone Booth always tend to get a lot of photo opts so check that out lol. Big Ben has been a staple in Charlotte, and I remember being quite sad when their Southend location announced they would be closing and moving to greener pastures. Luckily they didn't go too far, and ended up in the charming Elizabeth neighborhood. They are an English themed pub known as a hangout for sports fans. While soccer is popular to watch here they also are great for American football, and have become a hangout for Eagles fans on Sundays, and Florida State Seminoles fans on Saturdays. While they have the staples you expect like fish and chips and bangers and mash, they also include your typical gameday snacks like wings, burgers, nachos, and a pretty dang good Buffalo chicken dip. They have a variety of beers both domestics and imports, and of course it wouldn't be Big Ben without the large amount of English decorations with just the right amount of tackiness. This is a fun place that is well worth a visit. Even if you aren't hungry it is worth it to drop in for a cold one. read more

My ladies' dining group went to Big Ben Pub for Restaurant Week. I had not been here since they moved from their South End location. So, I decided that's the whole point of Restaurant Week... to try new places for a reasonable price and their $30 three course meal with wine was definately reasonable ! For starters, I got the buffalo haddock bites. They were excellent and I highly recommend. One lady got the banger bites. The sausage was good, but the puffed pastry over it didn't really add anything and it was better without it. There was mustard and relish served in cups on the side, but she didn't use them. She didn't eat much of it since she wasn't impressed. For entrees I got the haddock and chips. The oil it was fried in must not have been quite the right temperature yet because it was a tad greasy. I put a napkin over it and that helped. The flavor was good and the fish inside was nice. The piece of fish was huge ! It came with cole slaw and a pickle. The fries were not very crispy and that's a pet peeve of mine. The cole slaw was very good. However, the pickle had a hair on it when I picked it up so I didn't eat it. I did mention it to the waitress though. The meal came with a glass of house red or white wine. One lady got the shepherd's pie and said it was ok, but she's had better. From my vantage point, it looked runny inside. I like a drier meat filling that is still moist. For dessert we all got the housemade bread pudding. It was ok. It had a strange frothy texture and a sweet but plain taste. It had a few raisins and that was the only real flavor. I took home a piece of Limoncello cake for my husband. He wasn't impressed and said it tasted like a bought cake from the store. One of the ladies ordered off the menu and got a burger and fries. She said it was good. I hate these type of chairs that some restaurants have. They are so uncomfortable and they look cheap. I cannot imagine having to sit here for too long. One of the ladies joked that they have them so that you don't stay too long. The interior was decorated nice and they had a red phone booth. In summary, I might go back for the bites and haddock if I was over that way... but would likely choose Sir Edmund Halley's instead since it's closer and they have comfortable seating. I've visited Big Ben twice in the last couple of weeks, mainly because of it being the new game watching spot for the Charlotte Seminoles Club. The first time, we just came for the game and to have some drinks. It was jam packed and the music was blasting. It was a fun and energetic environment to watch a football game. The bartenders did a great job of being attentive toward everyone, despite the noise and chaos. On our most recent visit, we sat down and had some food before the start of the FSU game. The restaurant wasn't too crowded so it seems that the daytime games aren't as much of a crazy time for the restaurant. The game day sampler was a great mix of different appetizers and shared between two people, this was plenty of food! I felt that everything on the plate was pretty good--nothing spectacular. The chicken tenders were probably my favorite item, followed by the mozzarella sticks. Some friends dining with us had the loaded steak fries and also ordered some wings. They said that the flavors of wings tasted pretty similar. I think that this is a great game day spot and the food is good as far as bar food goes. The service deserves some praise as the bartenders and servers are attentive and quick to take care of requests for things like extra sauces and silverware. read more

I want to preface this by explaining that this review is from a person that has served and bartended for over a decade and my husband is a GM in restaurants. We have never been ones to give anyone this kind of review bc we have a lot of understanding especially when bartenders/servers are busy. That being said, the service we received from this bartender was APPALLING. I had known from the second I walked in that she was very cold and didn't greet me for about 15 mins to ask if I would like a drink. Now was there an event in the other room? Yes. Do I understand when the tender is busy? Of course. But she went out of her way with myself and all patrons to avoid eye contact or any interaction and was very rude overall. Additionally, she was moving slowly as if there weren't plenty of empty drinks and people that needed things. We witnessed people walking around to find condiments, napkins, silverware and a gentleman approached us asking if we had been here before bc he was super disappointed by the service and to top it off there was an 18% autograt attached to his check. Now listen, I have had checks with gratuity attached before but we were alerted about it and it was on the menu letting you know. This place did not let you know and when he asked her about it being taken off she ignored him and he was fed up and just paid it. After we witnessed how rude she was to this man, we INSISTED she take it off our check as we could not believe her lack of kindness and respect to the patrons of this establishment. When my husband asked, she brought back the check and would you believe it, 20% grat on our check!!!! My husband again said ma'am, we need this gratuity removed we can't justify it for the service we received (mind you we tip EVERYONE but can't demand 20% for this behavior). She flat out says no. We then go back and forth saying this is not right it's not on the menu that they add this and she grabs the menu out of my husbands hand as we mentioned this. She claimed that she can't take off gratuity bc she has a big party. I said ma'am, we are not part of that party we are at the bar and demanded to see her manager. At this point she snatches the card and check and says "FINE I'LL TAKE IT OFF!" Again, this could all have been avoided if she showed an inkling of kindness. A smile. An acknowledgement that she'll be right there. ANYTHING other than her mean attitude. She ruined what was supposed to be a spontaneous date night during a busy week for us and I really hope management considers who they let run their store-most people would not come back after this. *btw she's brunette/black hair with tattoos on her arms* read more

This was my first time visiting this location, and it was a pleasant experience. I came here for the Champions League final soccer game, and the atmosphere was great. It was a bit warm inside, as the AC wasn't working efficiently, and we had a light on us that they wouldn't turn off. However, the food was excellent, and our waitress was amazing. My husband and I frequented the old location and their new. We have been loyal customers due to the environment and consistency. This was our first time ordering actual food (other than their addictive house made chips) My husband ordered fish and chips (and there is a deal on it every Friday). Which he enjoyed while it was hot. I ordered their beef Wellington. After 3 cocktails in, I thought it was "decent" if you're looking for a classic Gordon Ramsay, Hells Kitchen level Wellington, your expectations will be underwhelmed. But if you're good for a dive bar's edition Wellington, you'd be okay. Vegetables lacked seasoning, however, I enjoyed the mash and gravy. I'm terms of the "hero" of the plate, I was not asked how I would like it cooked, it came out medium (my preference is medium rare) though the most redeeming quality is the absolute tenderness. I got some staple items including Shepherds Pie and Sticky Toffee Pudding, and was pleasantly surprised at the rich flavors and large portion sizes. I left feeling full and happy! Considering it was a Monday night, the space was pretty empty which is why I was surprised that our service was a bit slow. Other than that I enjoyed the decor in the space, and there was plenty of parking across the street for free. We arrived for a very late dinner after leaving the hospital. We were a party of 5 and everyone was super satisfied with our meal. We were seated right away on a Friday night. The server was a little slow taking our order but the food came out fairly quickly. The fish and chips was the best we've had outside the UK. The fries were excellent and the burgers were great. We loved this establishment before it moved and have always brought guests when visiting the area. We tried to support the change. But I have never been treated the way I was treated just the other day. You spend more energy by being rude than you do by using good customer service skills. There were three people sitting at the bar. We stood there waiting and waiting and waiting to be seated. When we were finally acknowledged, the server was extremely rude. I understand the business. I have worked in this industry for well over 35 years. If you didn't want the business then you should have locked the doors. It wasn't near closing time. And there were only three people in the place just at 9pm. I spoke with good friends of ours and they had a similar experience and will not return either. Fix the issues or close it. read more

I was in Big Ben Saturday early evening. The service was a disgrace. We had booked a table, we were asked to wait 5 mins, he never returned (serving in the bar. We had a 25 mins wait at the bar, ignored by all the serving staff. One lady appeared to be favoring a group in on corner. We found a table ourselves, no service. After about 15 mins wait my wife tried to attract the attention of a server, who said sorry they were busy. I do appreciate that they were very busy, with people from the rugby, but surely it is not my problem that they are busy. Once again to emphasize we were totally ignored ( other non related people having the same problem). The ambience was more sports bar than restaurant and so it was VERY loud and difficult to carry on a decent conversation with fellow diners. Went for a Dallas vs Philly game and it was nothing short of a hostile environment. Had a great time arguing with Philly fans as they were losing from beginning to end. Then towards the end of the 4th quarter, an obnoxious security guard and some random white male put their hands on me. This was all because women started to request pictures with me. The owner eventually came out and tried to deescalate the situation. By that time the patrons had shown a side of themselves that wasn't rooted in sport. Racist remarks were whispered & hurled at me. Even as I tried to use the restroom, there was loud talks of disrespectful comments directed towards me. I'll be back next NFL season. Hopefully the owner and his minions will be more accommodating to locally born n raised Charlotteans. This was my birthday dinner 2 days ago. I had the haddock and chips. Haddock was not battered, not one single bit!!! My "chips" were COLD. What they call coleslaw slaw is really cabbage and LETTUCE (if you can believe that) with some kind of sauce. That's it!! My friend had the burger (sans bun) which had zero seasoning and was not cooked well done (as asked) as there was a lot of pink. We got seated at the table by the awesome art scene of Big Ben and the London eye wheel. Between 12 of us we managed to order a good variety of food, I shared the fish and chips, bangers and mash and sausage rolls . Totally recommend sharing a few of the standard British offerings . The fish and chips comes with a huge piece of fish and plenty of yummy thick chips. True England style! With plenty of vinegar and ketchup this went down a treat . The bangers and mash was also a favorite. The mashed potatoes were so good with gravy and the bangers nice and meaty and again the true British sausages. So good. The sausage rolls were also good , wrapped in puff pastry not too thick so you get more Sausage taste less pastry. Delicious! Also on the table the big British breakfast was really good, real British bacon ! and the Shepards pie looked amazing and huge! Also very meaty with lots of lovely mashed potatoes on top. The build your own skillets were great cause you get what you want in it. The desserts were to die for. Obviously we went for the British best, knickerbocker glory, sticky toffee pudding and the apple crumble. All of them the best I've had outside of the UK! Sticky toffee is my absolute favorite pudding in England. They did a great job on this here. Bit more sauce would be good though ! The knickerbocker glory was like a trifle and layered to perfection with all the goodies. Cake, custard, fruit and jello. The apple crumble was a hearty winter dessert but still delicious In June. I really wanted to LOVE Big Ben but it just fell short for me. We came after fasting for a blood draw all day and were famished and this was the closest place to the lab that also looked fun. The Good: it's a pretty fun atmosphere to watch a game - especially more European sports like soccer or rugby. Lots of TVs above the bar. It's also a chill place to just have a drink and they have a decent pour of Guinness. The Meh: the food was pretty average at best for me. I got fish and chips and the fish was super dry inside while the batter was very soggy. I didn't get any of that lovely crunch fish and chips should have like the ones at Workman's Friend or Ri Ra. The fries were also very bland. Our server was friendly enough but hard to get anything out of. I wanted more vinegar than what was on my plate but when I asked for vinegar she said "there's some on your plate there" and walked away before I could finish my sentence. It was about 4:30 pm so it was before they got busy. Sigh. Nothing special here, but a decent serving. My daughter chose the Cornish Pasty and said that the stuffing was good but the outside was dry. My wife chose the roast beef and barely ate half of it. Overdone and the gravy was off. She's a Brit, as I mentioned in my earlier review, and said that she's not familiar with whatever they're trying to do here. My Guinness was poured perfectly. A proper pint that was tan when it was set down and settled properly withing about three minutes. Good flavor and the right amount of foamy head remained on top. We have had good food here in the past, so we thought we'd try the bar area for St. Patrick's Day/NCAA basketball. We only stayed for one beer before cashing out and heading to another bar. Two problems: 1)The bartender had a really bad attitude; she seemed mad at the customers. There are so many bars in Charlotte there is no reason to hang out with someone who hates her job. 2) This is March Madness in a basketball crazy state. There were six TVs in the bar, and only two were tuned to basketball. This is early in the tournament, so there are 4 games on concurrently. We politely asked to change one of the channels off women's tennis, but she didn't. See problem #1.
