Big Apple Bagels is my joint! Been going here for years now and just went back recently to scoop up them freshly made and oh so tasty bagels! Nothing fancy about the place it's a small bagel shop. The crush though, the bagels are solid and always coming out fresh. Service is spot on and the ladies that run this joint know exactly what they are doing! My favorite, the breakfast bagel with sausage, egg, cheese on a French toast bagel with a side of syrup! All sweet and savory all at the same time! My first time here was lackluster. It's a tiny little restaurant, yet somehow it seemed really messy and unkempt at first glance. It wasn't "dirty" per se, but the disarray was palpable. Especially with me being the only customer in there at 1pm, and the trash is overflowing, crumbs all over the front counter and the only worker was doing something in the back. It took a while for her to notice me and take my order, which wad fine, she was the only one there, ill cut her some slack...maybe there was a big rush right before i got there. Anyway, most importantly, the food. I ordered a veggie egg sandwich on a toasted buttered asiago bagel. I heard a microwave beeping in the back when she went to go make it, which was worrisome. The final product was so underwhelming. It was like a reheated mini veggie omelette on a bagel. Definitely some sort of fast food egg with some chopped peppers, onions and tomatoes in it. It definitely tasted like microwave food. It was inexpensive though! The mediocre quality of my bagel sandwich seems about right for $4.75. It was honestly only slightly better than a McDonald's bagel sandwich and I appreciate there is at least a vegetarian option here. The asiago bagel was delicious though! If i ever return ill just get a bagel and not a sandwich. I guess if Im ever in a morning rush and need a quick cheap breakfast ill stop in here over the McDonald's drive-thru. read more

I consider these the best bagels in Grand Rapids and look forward to each Sunday when I resupply my freezer for bagels throughout the week. The staff is very accommodating and polite, making my weekly bagel run an enjoyable errand. My family likes an assortment of "flavors" so we stock up on poppy seed, sesame, cheese, and salt bagels. So I order a few of the speciality sandwiches for my family and I. On the menu, specialty sandwiches can either come with bread or a bagel. I tried to order them with bread, but the manager looks at me with a confused look. She goes to ask someone if there is bread at their store. Someone replies something like "I don't think I've ever seen bread here,". Anyway, I just order using bagel options and choose my bagels. The specialty sandwiches come with a drink, chips and a pickle. While she rings me up I ask for my drink cups and while I'm waiting I choose my drinks and wait for the meal. As I'm filling up my drinks, I hear loud inappropriate conversation happening while they make my food. The topic of conversation is a gross food joke, which wasn't pleasant to hear while waiting for my food that I just ordered. Looking around the store, you could tell that they really didn't take pride in the store as it wasn't clean in the slightest. Store was empty but tables had trash on it. Trash can was full and overflowing, smudges on the windows, and a shelf that had contact paper lining it crumpled up and not lined with the shelf at all with random objects scattered on it. Anyway I'm waiting and finally get my food to go. I had ordered club sandwiches and a BLT, which barely had bacon on it. And to top it off, they forgot the pickles. -_- read more

My first experience: I was driving by here on a Saturday morning & decided to stop in and grab a bagel since I had never been here. Got the asiago. Yum. It was big with just the right softness to it. A few weeks pass and here comes a Groupon - $5 for $10 to spend here. Awesome, can't wait to try more bagels here and the sandwiches! We decide to have a breakfast potluck at work. I decide it is the perfect time to get a bagel assortment and some cream cheese to contribute since I have $10 to spend. I stop in and say I want the dozen deal from the menu on the board. That consists of a dozen bagels & two 1/2 pounds of cream cheese. They have several different cream cheese options and I can't wait to try some. The girl picking out my bagels seemed to be struggling a bit. I said cinnamon raisin and watch her put a cinnamon sugar in my bag. Apparently some of the bagels have an upcharge which I didn't see anywhere but that doesn't mean it wasn't posted. That kind of annoyed me. Whatev. I choose my dozen and then repeat that I want the dozen deal. The girl who picked out my bagels rings me up while another worker looks through a list to find my Groupon # to cross off the list. The lady with the list asks the bagel girl if I had cream cheese and she said no. So for the 3rd time I say I want the dozen deal and the bagel girl gave me a look like "duh". So they ring me up using my $10 coupon and say I am all set. Hmmmm. Nobody has asked me what cream cheese I would like. So I say "What about my cream cheese" and the list lady looks at me and says "She said you didn't have any" and sighs like she doesn't know what to do. I was so irritated. I said forget it, reached for my bag & walked out the door. Bad way to start the day. If I can read the menu then the girl working should be able to as well. I don't usually say I will never go back based on 1 bad experience and I do have another Groupon to use...hopefully my next trip is better! read more
