I LOVE bagels but here there is not much to love here, I was really dissatisfied and disappointed. The bagels were doughy and flat tasting. I have a very nice bagel slicer at home and it could not do a clean cut the bagels were so doughy. Staff were not organized and one look like she was asleep standing up. The store was clean if you did not look to close, I did look close and it was sure the cleaning was a while with a dry towel, and nothing moved. Only a couple customers in the store on Sunday morning. I hate giving a bad review but my dog got most of the bagels, this used to be a good place, makes me sad. The Experience: This little humble place is directly by Subway and Lake Burger on W. Main st. In my 6+ year in Kalamazoo, this is my first visit. I was leaving my a buddy's place in the morning when I decided to stop by, mainly because I wanted coffee and Tim Horton's drive through line was overflowing. I pushed the door walking into Big Apples to a line of costumers and a lively crowd on tables. From a first impression stand point, this was great. I ordered the French Toast and the Cinnamon Sugar, got regular and cinnamon creamcheeze on the side, and 2 lattes (a creme caramel and a cinnamon). I asked for my bagels toasted, which they unfortunately missed, and sliced in half. The whole experience consumed 12-15 minutes of my time. The Food: The French Toast bagel looked nice and crispy visually, it a felt hard at first bite but you get used to its toughness as you go. I expected a warm crisp bite, but it was cold. Went well with the plain cream cheese and better with the cinnamon cheese. I would rate the French Toast bagel 4/5. The cinnamon bagel was fluffy, soft, with a hint of cinnamon. For lack of crispiness, and its cold temp, Its a 2 out of 5 stars. Suggestions: I would ensure that they toasted my bagel next time. For sweet tooth drinkers, I would avoid picking up my lattes from here. If you want great bagels for similar price, checkout Panera bread, and order their Cinnamon bagel, sliced and toasted with regular cream cheese (5 out of 5 Star bagel). I'd like to think that I've become somewhat of a connoisseur of this place. We all pick our favorite chain coffee place, and I think this is mine. Although there is a large caveat to that statement: I don't come here for the coffee. The reason I come here is in the name: bagels, bagels, bagels. I'm a bagel fanatic--I love everything about them. They are a convenient shape and size. They have more crust than toast. They can be cut in half lengthwise, OR across and they create a different experience each time. Most importantly, they're a creative medium for bakers. And at no chain (excepting perhaps upscale joints like Panera) is this more apparent than BAB. Their selection is always exceptional, with at least ten to fifteen different types of bagel on the rack at any given moment. Their bagels are always fresh and very unique. They seem to pride themselves on having flavors that are not common. The pièce de résistance is their cream cheese. Again, a multitude of flavors, all high quality, all delicious. Unlike the standard bagel shop, they go beyond just vanilla, chive, and strawberry. You will also find chocolate chip, blueberry, honey-walnut, and more. This is probably the biggest draw for me. So why don't they garner the esteemed five star rating? The coffee isn't that great. It's too bad, because if they served some high quality brews, BAB would be the ultimate coffee join. I feel like they're one step away from being a "classy" chain (think Panera, Starbucks) and fall more into the "quick" chain (think Bigby, Tim Hortons) because of this. Final note: they have breakfast sandwiches; they're fairly good. The bagels, as always, are very tasty. They make surprisingly good eggs. Worth a try, although they're the most expensive thing on the menu. read more

I would give this a 4, but lately they have been really messing up my order. I love the food, it's amazing! It's just a hit or miss with this location. Everyone is nice that works there, but my cons are that it is way too pricey if I get a drink and good together. It's crazy how much you can spend there on just a basic meal. This place sucks. I ordered a toasted bagel with cream cheese and they gave me a disfigured somewhat of a bagel smothered in cream cheese. It was less that half a bagel. There was more cream cheese than bagel. Probably thought that I wouldn't notice if they smothered it with cream cheese to make up for the lack of bagel. I'll stick to Bagel Beanery on S. Great food, great sandwiches, friendly ppl, but the iced latte was the most disgusting thing I have ever had. Please teach your people how to make espresso. Shots of espresso are not supposed to sit longer then 10 seconds, she let them sit 30 plus seconds which makes the espresso bitter. I threw it out the second I walked out the door. read more
