3.5 but rounding up. Woah... place was PAAAACKED on a Saturday morning. I stopped in not realizing there is no indoor seating. This made it difficult for my group to enjoy our bagels but we did the best we could. They do have a high table along the window so we used that to put our stuff down and stood while eating. We did get really lucky with only 3 people ahead of us to order. After that it was game over, the line was out the door and there was absolutely no room. It's a place where you grab and go. Noted. Service did take some time since it was extremely busy. Staff members were organized-ish, they took orders on a shared notebook and then went to the next customer. When my order was being prepared I had to remind them again of what I wanted. I tried a jalapeño bagel toasted with vegetable cream cheese. Cream cheese was delicious - salty, flavorful and thick. The bagel was good flavor wise, I would probably order it again but I am interested in trying others. I wish it was more on the thicker side but overall very tasty. Tip - there is a 3% charge if you're using a credit card. To avoid this I recommend paying with cash.

We were craving bagels and decided to check out Big Apple Bagels near us. When you walk in, you can smell the fresh, delicious bagels! There is no seating inside so this is a to-go place. The service was quick and the food was prepped fresh right in front of you! The menu has a bunch of breakfast bagel sandwiches and lunch sandwiches. They also offer A TON of cream cheese options which I love! We got 2 breakfast bagel sandwiches - one was an Asiago bagel with jalapeño cheddar cream cheese with bacon, egg, and cheese. The other was an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese with bacon, egg, and cheese. Both bagels were absolutely amazing! The actual bagels were toasted to perfection, they tasted so fresh, and the inside was soft while the outside was crispy. The eggs inside were fluffy and yummy and made for the perfect breakfast sandwich with the crispy bacon. The cream cheeses were SO GOOD! I loved the jalapeño cheddar flavor - there was a slight hint of spice while also being perfectly creamy and flavorful. The scallion cream cheese was iconic with its green onions mixed with plain cream cheese. We were so impressed with this quick bagel shop and can't wait to go back and try more of their bagel and cream cheese combinations!

It was a solid 7, which is why I place it at 3.5 stars. I may be being picky here but it just wasn't to the level of "melt-in-your-mouth" pastrami standards for me. Not to say it wasn't good, because it was perfectly fine. In fact, it's better than most of the pastrami sandwiches I tried in Chicagoland. Maybe it's the fact that I had to bring it back to the office to eat it, and half hour had gone by and pastrami weren't as warm and the Jewish rye had become soggy by the time I took the first bite. I mean, it goes without saying that the sandwich would have been 3 times better had I sat down immediately and had it. Again, all things considered, it was a perfectly good sandwich. One interesting thing was that I had never been to an establishment that included a half sour pickle instead of a normal one and gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised. Pickles can be a hit or a miss for me. I like my pickles to be crunch, but some places offer overripened ones that become borderline mushy. Schmaltz's half sour pickle was not overly salty or sour, making it very attractive for me. The more I'm thinking about it, I'm convinced that I'll have to go back and try their #14 Sloppy Paul, which is the corned beef with sauerkraut, which is another favorite of mine. And this time, I'll be sure to dine in and give another review of it to see how much I like them better.

Lots of fun deli sandwiches to choose from. I chose a French Dip; hubby had a pick two-- a cup of matzo ball soup, and 1/2 corned beef sandwich. Both served with a whole new pickle. Mine was absolutely delicious. Tons of beef, melty swiss, and grilled onion. Served nice and hot with a tasty au jus. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his as well. Great Jewish deli. Highly recommend whether you're Jewish or not! ;)

I love that the amount of sweetened condensed milk was just right where the coffee didn't end up being too sweet. I do want to point out that the drink didn't seem like the strongest coffee around, and the taste closer resembled tea with a little milk added. I should have gone to the Vietnamese coffee the cashier offered! I also tried a piece of their sour cream coffee cake. Warmed wonderfully, and with just the right amount of sweetness, crispness, and just a little tang from the sour cream. This was terrific, and something I would absolutely get again. The vibe is classic with lots of wood, and plenty of comfortable seating. However, if you choose to take advantage of their WiFi, you are asked to buy a drink first, and then every 30 minutes after an hour. I understand where this comes from, and it serves as a deterrent from someone buying one drink and spending a working day in here. However, it also makes Sweetwaters seem like less of a spot to chill and catch up on Yelp reviews (for e.g.,), as I'd have to set a stopwatch to not break the rules. Final verdict: while the Dragon Eye could've had some coffee flavors, the coffee cake helped bring the experience up. While the vibe is classic, don't expect to sit and work without keeping the drinks coming.

If you're expecting this to be interchangeable with the franchised bagel places that have spread…read moreacross the country, recalibrate now. This is not that. I've been going to New York Bagel & Bialy for over 50 years, and places like this operate on a different clock, a different standard, and frankly, a different philosophy of what a bagel is supposed to be. Timing matters. If you show up after about 8:00 AM, your odds of getting bagels at their absolute peak--still warm, properly textured, with that slight resistance on the outside and softness inside--go up significantly. Earlier can be hit or miss depending on the batch cycle, but once they're in stride, this place delivers. The essentials are all here and worth your time: poppy seed, sesame, everything, and especially the bialys. The bialys alone are reason enough to make the trip--properly done, with the right chew and depth of flavor that you simply won't find in mass-produced versions. Don't overcomplicate it. Grab a dozen. On your way home, stop and pick up a couple packages of Philadelphia Cream Cheese and some smoked salmon a jar of capers, a Bermuda onion--whether here or even from Walmart--and you've got a meal that outperforms most brunch menus at a fraction of the cost. This isn't trendy. It's not trying to be. It's something better: consistent, old-world, and still doing it the right way. If you're going to call something a bagel, the standard is not branding--it's process. That's why New York Bagel & Bialy on Touhy stands apart. They actually do it right: kettle-boiled first, then baked in rotating ovens. That single decision--boiling--changes the entire structure. It gelatinizes the outer starch layer, locks in density, and produces that thin, glossy crust with real chew. Without it, you don't have a bagel--you have bread with a hole. The rotating ovens matter too. They deliver even heat, which means you get the correct balance: a slight exterior crisp with a dense, elastic interior. No puffiness. No sponge. No collapse under toppings. That's the difference here. Most chains optimize for speed and shelf life, so they steam or shortcut the process. Many local shops land in the middle. This place doesn't compromise. If you care about what a bagel is supposed to be--not just what it's called--this is the benchmark in Chicago.
