I was on the hunt for a good cream-filled donut. The ones at grocery stores and Dunkin leave a weird aftertaste on my tongue. Since DeEtta's no longer sells the chocolate cream angel, and since Home Cut Donuts in Joliet is too far of a drive (they have an excellent angel cream), I had to find another option. Someone recommended The Donut Shop in Plainfield. This one's not close to home, either, but I made the drive on a Sunday morning with light traffic. Even at 7:30 AM, there was a steady flow of customers. They have a good selection of donuts. The ones in the back are pretty much flavors you'd find elsewhere, but they have some unique flavors in the front counter, like an M&M-topped donut. I didn't order any of the specialty ones, but in hindsight I wish I had gotten a chocolate eclair. I got a plain glazed donut, a vanilla long john, an angel cream, and a chocolate cream. They were only $1.49 each, which is very reasonable for something that's better quality than grocery stores or Dunkin. A lot cheaper than a gourmet place like Firecakes. Oh, and I like the box they serve the donuts in. My wife and son seemed to enjoy the glazed donut and long john. I only had a bite of each, but noticed that these are thick and not greasy; similar texture to DeEtta's donuts. The two cream-filled donuts were good and had a reasonable amount of filling, but the cream filling didn't seem to have the same quality that I recall DeEtta's having. But not bad. For $1.49 each, this allowed me to fulfill my craving. read more

As a big lover is angel cream donuts, I was very happy to find that theirs are ON POINT. Sour cream donut and lemon curd were really good too. We'll definitely be coming back for more. Also, they sell a dozen assorted day old donuts in a sealed box for $6. We went around 8:30a on a Thursday and there were only 3 boxes left. My first visit there was very little bacon on the maple bacon donut. They've gone to a long john and it's better. Other flavors have been good, but apple fritter was lacking apple flavor. Staff is great. They should offer buy 1 dozen get one free a couple hours before they close, since they throw out soo many at the end of the day. Nice to have these great donuts so close to home. Large and pillowy. Cake donuts are soft and moist. Have only been a few times but will make sure to keep coming back.
