This is the the place. And it's been the place for a very, very long time. It even predates me and I'm nearly prehistoric at this point. The parking lot is... interesting, but there's generally more than enough spots. The drive thru is tightly wrapped by the street, but is easy enough to get into. The decor is perfectly average. There's nothing eye popping, except for the old original pricing on some boards in the back. The food itself, from the namesake burgers to the tenderloin sandwiches to the fries and onion rings; everything is just good and priced well. It's not Culver's level elite, but it's a nice step up from the McDonald's of the world. It comes out hot and is always right. The staff is always friendly and they move quickly. So if you're in the neighborhood and need a quick lunch or dinner, it's worth stopping in. read more

The breading on the onion rings was coming off, and they were very greasy and limp. My sack was greasy on the outside as grease soaked through. I sat it on the floor mat to take it home. A regular FF was smaller than McDonalds and very limp also, for $4+ seemed disproportionate to what you received. Double Hamburger almost $10.00 and thin enough to make you feel if it was a junior double! The dab of onions on the sandwich was completely hidden in the mustard. One could barely see them let alone taste them. The pickles were excellent! Customer service was ok but the young lady at the counter (the only cashier apparently serving customers) never stopped talking to another person on the customer side the entire time I was there. The other person was just visiting with the counter person. Thankfully another employee delivered my sack because the cashier never missed a word with her visitor's conversation. The place was amazingly clean and well run with friendly staff behind the counter. The parking lot was gigantic, compared to the size of the restaurant. The star of the food we got were definitely the tots and onion rings. The burgers... well... they were burgers. The happiest customer on our visit was the 6 year old. He ordered chocolate milk, and they mixed a glass of milk with chocolate syrup right in front of him (without skimping on the chocolate!). He was delighted! He was equally delighted in the free ice cream cone that comes with the kids meal. He devoured his burger nibbled at the fries, and covered his face in smiles and ice cream (when do kids learn not to be so messy, lol?!) Happy little customer :-) The adults got bacon burgers and split fries, tots, and onion rings. The fries were ok, the tots were crispy and perfect, and the rings were just crispy greasy yummy goodness. We definitely ordered too much food, but enjoyed it! The burgers were just ok. An ok mix of flavor, with tomato and pickle and some kind of drippy sauce. The bun was kinda an afterthought, and didn't hold up, making the meat the main player. But the burger as a whole just didn't hit any high notes. I'd eat it, if you put it in front of me, but it isn't a fast food standout. In all, sure, they will have us as a repeat customer. I've been eating at this restaurant for 56 years off and on. Had lunch there yesterday and was disappointed with the quality of the food and the prices. A burger, tots and Dr. Pepper came to $15.51, not including tip. The food itself was a disappointment-dry burger, stale bun. lousy tomatoes. I've spent my life (and a lot of money) supporting local businesses, but I have to say this restaurant is no longer comparable to Culver's, Freddy's, In-N-Out, or 5 Guys. Look down 40 Highway and it's a wasteland of businesses that did not evolve or rise to meet the challenges presented by the ubiquitous chain offerings. Our first time eating here. It was ok but not worth the money or worth going back. The drive thru menu board was clean and clear. Easy to read. Ordering was a snap. Very friendly staff. Service was pretty good. They made my food quick so it was hot and fresh. I was let down by the quality of the burgers. The buns were very thin, maybe they smashed them but way too fragile and I couldn't pick up my burger without it falling apart. Flavor was decent, nothing to set it apart from any other burger place. A random stop for us on a road trip. Had never heard of it and didn't know what to expect...but you usually can't go wrong with burgers! There was a line of about 5 customers when we arrived, but the cashier was fast and efficient. We received our order quickly and all was accurate. Definitely a fast food restaurant vibe with booth seating inside. They have the original menu on the wall...interesting to see how prices have changed. Great food! Burgers were tasty and filling. Big Boy's Restaurant has been at the same location since 1962. It's served Independence as a great stopping spot to grab a cheeseburger and also a shake. I'm vegetarian, but I love this place...which makes me not much of a faithful vegetarian. The sandwiches are large, with an over-sized hamburger, (I order my cheeseburgers plain). The French fries are crunchy, and one receives an ample amount. What totally nips it in the bug are the onion rings. OMG...my favorite item on the entire menu. They are not frozen,but made from scratch, and are large, and I can't rave on them enough. You can smell the onion rings outside. The other menu items are tenderloins, hot dogs, fish sandwich (another of my favorite, as I try to stay away from beef as often as I can). They have the best tarter tots ever.They have a children's menu,and Jr. sized sandwiches. The shakes are so good. They are one of the best shakes in the Independence area. The cyclone shakes with Butterfingers or Oreos beg to be ordered. The shakes come in a variety of flavors. The restaurant also serves ice cream sundaes and ice cream cones. Let's talk about the cherry limeaides! Perfectly mixed, and you know when you order a cherry lime aide, and you drink it to the bottom , and there's no cherry or lime in it? Not so with Big Boy's cherry limeaides. The half of a lime is in the bottom of the glass. The cherries are also in the bottom of the glass. When ordering, you order,and wait for the meal. They have a drive through that, every single day at noon is backed up clear to 40. highway. But don't let this cause you to go somewhere else. The staff are efficient, and the line moves quick. Talk about a blast from the past! I have not been to one of these in a very long time. For one I don't know very many of them around anymore. I was over on this side of town for an appointment and was going to pull in for a bite at a change sandwich shop when I saw it down the street. I zipped on down and ran in. It was like stepping into the past. Robin egg blue counters, the menu board that still had the little letters stuck to it. Everything in the place; lights, cups, etc. all covered in the classic Pepsi logo. The kid at the counter took my order and made my drink from a vintage 80s fountain and handed me a paper ticket with my order number on it. As I waited I looked around. It looked and felt like a small hometown and this was the good old Tasty Freeze from years ago... ok so I would have been a kid at that time but I don't remember the burgers being half as tasty. This was my best experience there every. I went through the drive Thur at 9:20 Friday evening. I ordered a Jr double cheeseburger with mustard only and a small order of onion rings. I watched the girl bag my food and as she was bagging my onion rings, I thought to myself, " That's alot of onion rings for a small order.". I've picked up on who my favorite employees are and who will give me the best service experience. Let me just say this, the food is still good, except some of the staff need serious attitude adjustments. There was one instance where a young lady was arguing with the cook in front of customers. Big Boy is one of only two places that has onion rings that I would eat EVERY DAY, if I didn't mind perpetual onion breath and was willing to weigh 250 pounds. As it is, I have to ration the number of times I can visit here to about once a month. When I make my monthly pilgrimage, I enjoy three different sandwiches in rotation: The cheeseburger, the tenderloin and the steak sandwich are all good solid fast-food renditions of the genre. I recently moved to Independence and Big Boy was one of the places my new neighbors had said was a must try. I read the reviews and decided that the next time I was in the mood for a good old burger, I'd go to Big Burger. I couldn't have been more disappointed! It was around 7, after the dinner rush. I ordered the 1/4 BB- no lettuce, tomato or mayo, a large onion ring and a pineapple shake. I received a cold burger, cold greasy onion rings and a runny shake. I asked for a fresh burger and rings and explained that my food was cold. While the gal was apologetic and said "of course!", I received another cold burger and a slightly warmer bag of rings (half of which was batter-only chunks). The pineapple shake was yummy but certainly not the good old fashioned milk shake that you would expect from a place like this, and not really worth the full star that I was forced to rate to write this review. read more
