Just don't! It's not that the food is bad ... it's the service. I work in the service industry I could run laps around this crew. Took 16 min to get a table cleaned. There were 5 workers for 15 people. There was 8 people just drinking at the bar. Only two tables inside taken and three tables taken outside. The two tables outside were almost done. It took 25 min to get a Coke and a Bloody Mary and a menu. Another 20 for our order. Yes I was timing it. I had to ask for another Coke. 2hrs and 15 min later finally get to leave. I had to find her to pay. I left cash and a card. As a server you ask would you like to split it or use all the cash? She just charged the card. BCD is one of my top "go-to" spots for take out, especially whey they're offering the Suzy Q burger special. The burger is juicy and delicious, topped with a side of melted cheese, lettuce, red onion, and a nice dab of mayo on the bun. I've dined in here on several occasions, but I like to just order ahead on the app and then grab and go. The service is always on point; fast and friendly, even for take out. I've been here often enough that the servers, especially Kristen, greet me by name. This is a replacement review, as yelp removed my original post. Anyway, went to the Big City Diner in Kailua for the first time since moving back to Kailua. Everything about our experience was terrible, from food to service. We thought it was going to be fine, since we were greeted immediately. There were only 3 people at the bar & 2 people sitting in a booth, but the rest of the restaurant was empty, so we were thinking service would be good being that we saw 4 employees. Found it strange that we were told we could sit where we wanted. After waiting 10 minutes, our server said she didn't see us here, but she had to take care of one thing and would be back. So much for being right back, as we waited another 5 minutes (15 minutes total) without even any water, before someone else came to ask if our server came to see us. We told her yes, but that she didn't bring us any waters or take any part of our order (drinks or food). After bringing us our drinks, we asked if she could take our order, as we didn't know how long it would before our actual server would come take our orders. She agreed to take our order, but didn't actually look to happy about it. Wife ordered the patty melt, I ordered the Loco moco & chili/cheese tater tots. About 5 minutes later, the tator tots came out, but it was LOADED with green & round onions, which was not noted on the menu! Apparently, we were supposed to be asked if we wanted any onions on it. I wish I had taken a picture of it, so you could see how loaded with onions it was. Well, the problems didn't end there, as my Loco moco had a lot of onions, which also was not noted in the menu. To top it off, the eggs were overcooked, as it turned out over medium instead of over easy, and there wasn't enough grave so it was all rather dry. Overall, the food tasted just so-so at best. Service continues to be nonexistent from our server, while she did bring out the corrected chili/cheese tots, otherwise she has been nowhere to be found. Other people brought out our food, but nobody has checked back with us to see if everything was okay or to see if we needed a refill on our drinks. The only tables that were being serviced well were the ones being taken care of by a guy server & whoever sat at the bar. Don't know how this location can survive with service that is seriously lacking & food that that is just so-so. This has been one of the worst experiences we have had in a long time. Would not recommend ordering their premade holiday meals! Ordered their Christmas prime rib dinner because with the stress of having a long of young kids in the house, I dint want to have to cook on Christmas Day. We picked up our food at 1pm and upon opening it at home, it was prepared almost completely raw. I called to speak with the staff to let them know it was barely cooked and they did nothing to amend the situation- told me they serve it rare to allow customers to have it rare if they wish. Nothing was noted while ordering that it would need significant additional cooking in the oven. The manager I spoke to told me to cook it in the oven for another 30min at 325 degrees, which would've taken forever to cook properly. It set us back another hour and a half trying to cook it enough to at least eat the outer parts- even at higher heat and longer temps, the meat was still raw in the middle portions. The outer part of the prime rib had very little seasoning, I had to put my own butter and herb mix to the top before recooking the food to get a decent crust and seasoning on the outside. Steamed veggies tasted like it was sitting in the freezer too long- and it was poorly seasoned. The crab cakes were still crispy even though we had to eat them nearly two and a half hours after picking it up- but it was cold along with the veggies by the time our main dish was ready to eat. I'm so sad that the quality of food from this BCD seems to be declining. I ordered through Uber eats. Ordered pupu platter, pulehu steak and edamame. The edamame looked sickly pale. The sauce was horrible so I ended up making my own sauce to make the beans look somewhat decent. The pulehu steak that I ordered medium well, came rare. I ordered a loco moco for breakfast but the hamburger patty is not homemade. It's definitely the ones that come frozen and they just throw on the grill. If that's not something that matters to you then you might like it because the gravy was okay. We also got an order of their French toast which they use anis cinnamon bread. It was good and it's nice that they support another local company. My husband ordered an omelette and the mimosa which was huge. One whole onion cost 1/2 of that, and they added my 6 dollar extra crispy onion to my plate in addition to the crispy onion that already come with it, like it wasn't even worth a 6 dollar side order crispy onion!!! As expected nowadays, due to lack of staff, service was a tad slow. BUT we do understand the situation. Our waitress came to our table and as we were ready to order. We placed our order and she brought us water. Food came out in a pretty timely manner. We just shared their calamari tempura strips, which are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with the wasabi/mayo sauce. We also shared their salmon and spinach Benedict. We enjoyed in. A nice piece of salmon with a perfectly poached egg. Overall, our dining experience here was nice for a quick bite to eat. The restaurant is a little old but pretty well kept. There shouldn't be much difference between all the Big City diners since they should all be ordering the foods served from the same vendors. For example, the Kalbi here in Kailua is not as flavorful as the the Kalbi ordered in the Waipio Big City Diner. Kalbi Plate - 4/5 The Kalbi was tender and tasty, but NOT as flavorful as the Kalbi in the Big City Diner in Waipio. The Kalbi at the Big City Diner in Waipio is a 5/5. The Kim Chee tasted the same, which was great. The rice was a slightly dry, and a little burnt on the bottom. Steak and Shrimp combo - 3/5 The steak was a little tough, Probably a sirloin cut. The shrimp skewers had shrimp that was inconsistent. There were a lot of small size shrimp on the skewers (you get 2) where some of the shrimp were tender and a lot were over cooked, hard and dry. The flavor was average, but I just wish the shrimp was all perfectly cooked. The service was great. Our servers were attentive, friendly and helpful. She asked how everything was and kept our drinks full. I haven't tried other selections at the Kailua Big City Diner, so there is a possibility that other food items are good. We made last minute reservations here for a large group, and we are glad they could fit us in! Our group really enjoyed the meal. Service was slow, but I understand that they are understaffed and had one server for the whole place at first! All things considered, management was very kind to us, and most importantly, the food was excellent. Personally, I ordered the hamburger steak with crispy onions and rice and it was a very satisfying meal! Just the right amount of gravy and the hamburger meat wasn't tough at all. We have been loyal customers since 2007, so this review is difficult. Big City Diner Kailua is a family-oriented restaurant frequented by familiar locals. We have known some staff for many years. [[HIGHLIGHT]]During our last two breakfast visits, we have noticed a significant decline in the food quality, customer service, and cleanliness.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We are going to seek another breakfast place because of the decline. We are not sure if there was a change of manager, but the cook is undoubtedly not the same caliber as we have enjoyed in the past. The omelets are now greasy and don't appear to include fresh veggies or condiments. The hash browns are soggy, but the order was for very crispy, and the Paniolo potatoes on the previous visit were undercooked. The pork chop and gravy were a huge disappointment, as they were difficult to cut because they were so tough. In the past, the staff would follow up to ask if the food was okay, but no more. With Hawaii's current labor shortages in the restaurant industry, we were very impressed with our dining experience on this day. - 5 Ample parking available. - 4 Eating areas were clean, tables and chairs were cleaned and sprayed after each customer. - 4 Entire staff led by Manager Sam displayed excellent efficiency, team- work, and friendly customer service. -3.5 Food. Generous portions nicely seasoned, and flavorful. My wife had the Salmon, with garlic potatoes, and steamed vegetables. (the steamed vegetables were a bit over-cooked). I had the Pork Chops with mushroom gravy, rice, and steamed vegetables. MMMMmmm so Ono. - 4 Prices were in-line and competitive with other similar dine in rest- aurants. How awesome IS that! Welcome to BCD Kailua, where the Kalbi Fries is their specialty dish. PARKING / SETTING: Ample parking available at Kailua Town Center. And just an FYI: the stalls are a bit small/narrow, please be aware. The restaurant was a bit smaller than I expected. Seating is comprised of booths, tables, and the bar. FOOD: My friends had already arrived and ordered a bunch of appetizers to share: edamame, calamari, and....the kalbi fries. Well, as you might have guessed, I had to order my OWN kalbi fries after sampling theirs (thanks friends!), I also ordered a cup of the corn chowder, which was absolutely delicious! The kalbi fries consists of fries, chunks of kalbi, combined with a healthy amount of kim chee. A generous drizzle of wasabi mayo and green onions completes the dish. I like Korean food, fries, and kim chee, so for me (and I might be a bit bias), this dish was absolute heaven! The fries were crips, the kalbi was tender, and the added kim chee flavor wasn't overpowering. All in all, a great appetizer to share, OR order your own! SERVICE: Very satisfactory. Our server was a friendly and patient girl. As the tardy members of our party (myself included) joined the table, she diligently came over to greet us, and proceeded to take our drink/food orders. She willingly obliged the request for boxes, and dropped off the check in a timely manner. BOTTOM LINE: Good service, great food, and ample parking. The Kalbi Fries are a winner! read more

We took our little dog on a weekend for brunch. Their staff is very nice and professional. The only thing I'm not completely happy about was their kimchee fried didn't seem like freshly made. It came a little cold. But overall their foods are good. read more
