    The Really Loco, Loco Moco
    Sean H.

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon in Kailua when we stopped into Big City Diner, and it had been a while since our last visit. It's definitely a local spot with a menu full of island favorites. The loco moco and turkey club were both solid and hit the spot. Staff was pleasant and kept things moving without much fuss. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space is showing its age a bit, nothing wrong, just a little worn.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you're looking for a quick, no-frills meal with a bar and TVs for the game, this gets the job done.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Big City Diner in Kailua has that easy morning rhythm locals lean on. The staff greet regulars by name, remember how they take their coffee, and manage refills without hovering. People linger over conversation more than plates. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior shows some years but it's clean, and the open-air counter lets the breeze do half the work of the AC, which I liked[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I kept it simple: two eggs, toast, link sausage, potatoes, and coffee. Nothing was off, but nothing really landed either. If I'm measuring against the average diner plate, this sits a notch below on execution and flavor My total was about $20 after tip. In Kailua right now, that feels less like a markup and more like the cost of breakfast. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The service and the genuinely local vibe pull more than their weight and almost nudge this to four stars.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food matters, though, and here it's fine, not memorable. Three stars, edging upward on hospitality and atmosphere

We couldn't find Kono's so decided on here. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Much smaller location than at Waipio.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restaurant was pretty full as it's a Sunday.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were seated shortly after we arrived and directed to the first empty booth. Our server was sweet and friendly. Food came out quickly. Hub's salad came out quickly. The next table ordered something with a strong smoky aroma like Doritos and cumin combined.

The Original Really Loco, Loco Moco ($18.99)

The Original Really Loco, Loco Moco ($18.99): I liked it, but it did not have traditional gravy; instead, it came with a demi-glaze sauce. The Classic Burger ($17.99): It was a simple burger, and the patty wasn't dry.

Loco moco with all the onions not noted in the menu that had to be pulled out!

This is a replacement review, as yelp removed my original post. Anyway, went to the Big City Diner in Kailua for the first time since moving back to Kailua. Everything about our experience was terrible, from food to service. We thought it was going to be fine, since we were greeted immediately. There were only 3 people at the bar & 2 people sitting in a booth, but the rest of the restaurant was empty, so we were thinking service would be good being that we saw 4 employees. Found it strange that we were told we could sit where we wanted. After waiting 10 minutes, our server said she didn't see us here, but she had to take care of one thing and would be back. So much for being right back, as we waited another 5 minutes (15 minutes total) without even any water, before someone else came to ask if our server came to see us. We told her yes, but that she didn't bring us any waters or take any part of our order (drinks or food). After bringing us our drinks, we asked if she could take our order, as we didn't know how long it would before our actual server would come take our orders. She agreed to take our order, but didn't actually look to happy about it. Wife ordered the patty melt, I ordered the Loco moco & chili/cheese tater tots. About 5 minutes later, the tator tots came out, but it was LOADED with green & round onions, which was not noted on the menu! Apparently, we were supposed to be asked if we wanted any onions on it. I wish I had taken a picture of it, so you could see how loaded with onions it was. Well, the problems didn't end there, as my Loco moco had a lot of onions, which also was not noted in the menu. To top it off, the eggs were overcooked, as it turned out over medium instead of over easy, and there wasn't enough grave so it was all rather dry. Overall, the food tasted just so-so at best. Service continues to be nonexistent from our server, while she did bring out the corrected chili/cheese tots, otherwise she has been nowhere to be found. Other people brought out our food, but nobody has checked back with us to see if everything was okay or to see if we needed a refill on our drinks. The only tables that were being serviced well were the ones being taken care of by a guy server & whoever sat at the bar. Don't know how this location can survive with service that is seriously lacking & food that that is just so-so. This has been one of the worst experiences we have had in a long time. I seriously can't see ever coming back here again. I would give zero stars, but you can't.

Baby Back Ribs With Our Famous Guava Barbecue Sauce Platter
    Mike H.

Some of the best food I had in Hawaii and some of the best diner food I've had. I had a full rack of ribs ($28.99) with rice and that was the smaller size! My dad's fries were also solid. The rack was 9 baby back ribs smothered in a sweet delicious guava BBQ sauce. The meat was decently tender and flavorful. So pleased I had to tell the waitress

Would not recommend ordering their premade holiday meals! Ordered their Christmas prime rib dinner because with the stress of having a long of young kids in the house, I dint want to have to cook on Christmas Day. We picked up our food at 1pm and upon opening it at home, it was prepared almost completely raw. I called to speak with the staff to let them know it was barely cooked and they did nothing to amend the situation- told me they serve it rare to allow customers to have it rare if they wish. Nothing was noted while ordering that it would need significant additional cooking in the oven. The manager I spoke to told me to cook it in the oven for another 30min at 325 degrees, which would've taken forever to cook properly. It set us back another hour and a half trying to cook it enough to at least eat the outer parts- even at higher heat and longer temps, the meat was still raw in the middle portions. The outer part of the prime rib had very little seasoning, I had to put my own butter and herb mix to the top before recooking the food to get a decent crust and seasoning on the outside. Steamed veggies tasted like it was sitting in the freezer too long- and it was poorly seasoned. The crab cakes were still crispy even though we had to eat them nearly two and a half hours after picking it up- but it was cold along with the veggies by the time our main dish was ready to eat. Salad had fresh lettuce but had three thinly sliced tomato quarters in it. Not worth the price and the stress, especially when purchasing a prepared holiday meal.

Yummy! Our second week in supporting this establishment. Service was not doing so well and manager caught it. This Japanese lady was rude...ignoring my guest who was mixture of Filipino Caucasian and a little dark. I swear she was prejudice. But the lady manager during dinner time came up and apologized. We came back to try the food and visit this manager who was working hard to make this place buzzing. Manager wanted us to try the Asian fish and told us it's not catfish which server was erroneous which deterred us from ordering it. Alan, owner should really listen to the manager and has some good ideas. Alan used to be part of Honolulu Executive Association. His restaurant was the best at Ward. I tipped the manager, not the server... My friend paid for the meal and left the server nothing. [[HIGHLIGHT]]But the ambiance was rescued by the manager and kept on top of the food going to the customers timely.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food is pretty good! I plan to be a regular....and live in Kaka'ako. It's worth my drive out there...everything is in the same area (Whole Foods/Down to Earth)!

I'm so sad that the quality of food from this BCD seems to be declining. I ordered through Uber eats. Ordered pupu platter, pulehu steak and edamame. The edamame looked sickly pale. The sauce was horrible so I ended up making my own sauce to make the beans look somewhat decent. The pulehu steak that I ordered medium well, came rare. The cheese garlic bread looked like American cheese slices slapped on a piece of bread. The ribs and chicken wings were the same sauce and the calamari was probably the most decent item. Such a shame as the food is NOT cheap but looks like it came from a bar with a red health placard. Really really disappointed.

I ordered a loco moco for breakfast but the hamburger patty is not homemade. It's definitely the ones that come frozen and they just throw on the grill. If that's not something that matters to you then you might like it because the gravy was okay. We also got an order of their French toast which they use anis cinnamon bread. It was good and it's nice that they support another local company. My husband ordered an omelette and the mimosa which was huge. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have both indoor and outdoor seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They're located in a shopping plaza next to Foodland so there's tons of parking. The only reason I would come here is because the service is great. The food, not so much.

I ordered Grandma's incredible kimchi fried rice. It comes with chicken pork and sausage in it. I'm glad the wait person asked if I want a half an order because I couldn't even eat that completely. The full order would be for a table because it would be too much for one person. The wait staff were very nice, [[HIGHLIGHT]]the restaurant was clean[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] and the menu was fairly varied so you have a lot of choices.

17 dollar calamari sticks - blahhh
    Jessica R.

Totally disappointed. Aunty Terry our server was soooo niceee that the stars are for her. The price we paid was not worth it. Family of 6, 3 adults 3 children. Kids ordered a cheeseburger keiki meal, one ordered a salmon plate, and the other ordered uncle Danny's fried rice. Cheeseburger and salmon plates I assume were good; kids finished it. Kid with uncle Danny's fried rice didn't like it. All adults tried it, and we all agreed it was nasty. Like wt is that?! That went to waste. Totally missed appetizers, 17 bucks for calamari sticks, was so little for 17 bucks. The fountain drink/ or at least the sprunch we got, there was a funny taste to it. Like the cup was old or the carbonation/ soda was old. Idk just had a weird taste. I ordered hamburger steak w/ crispy onions plus extra crispy onions. Side extra crispy onions was 6 bucks!!!! One whole onion cost 1/2 of that, and they added my 6 dollar extra crispy onion to my plate in addition to the crispy onion that already come with it, like it wasn't even worth a 6 dollar side order crispy onion!!! That's crazy. Wife ordered big brada loco moco. She ate 1/2. She normally finishes her whole plate. That went to waste. And my sister ordered a chicken sandwich meal, and she said that was good. Yes, I'm complaining. Just feel like the food was sloppy. Would I come here again? Unfortunately not. Inside the restaurant, was kinda smaller than I expected. Good amount of seats, small kine tight. Get bar/bar seating, and outdoor seating. Pretty cool inside like diner style. They are located in Kailua, next to foodland - easy to find if you use GPS. Another triggering thing is on their front door, they have a sign that says they prefer cash payment, or if you use card, you'll get charged a card fee, and asking to tip in cash! That's crazy. Any way, that's my review. Have a nice day!

    Calamari tempura strips

We stopped by here on Sunday around 11am after my girlfriend had her massage. We chose this place because it's close and we have dined at other Big City establishments on the island. We didn't have reservations but we're seated pretty quickly as one of the wait staff finished up cleaning and wiping some of the tables and booths. As expected nowadays, due to lack of staff, service was a tad slow. BUT we do understand the situation. Our waitress came to our table and as we were ready to order. We placed our order and she brought us water. Food came out in a pretty timely manner. We just shared their calamari tempura strips, which are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with the wasabi/mayo sauce. We also shared their salmon and spinach Benedict. We enjoyed in. A nice piece of salmon with a perfectly poached egg. Overall, our dining experience here was nice for a quick bite to eat. The restaurant is a little old but pretty well kept. (I did like their "nostalgic" Coca-Cola light fixtures.

We came earlier, but as the night went on, it got busier and our waitress was also assisting other customers in the other room, so we were missed . Service could have been better. Not too many of my townie friends had made it to this side but it's a nice place to dine at to experience their food and beautiful ambiance! There were a few side parking stalls along the right wall of the restaurant, otherwise you would need to find street parking. There's a nearby 24 hour municipal parking lot and it's still a quarter of 20 minutes. This restaurant is not in the main Kailua town area. If you haven't been to Kailua, Kailua is a nice town to try all these different restaurants. You be surprised and pleased. They are closed on Monday & Tuesday. Brunch is on weekends from 9 am to 1 pm. Otherwise they open from Wednesday thru Sunday from 4pm to closing at 9pm and on Friday & Saturday nights they are opened til 11pm.

Ox tail pot pie. Definitely can't call this a pie. But was good. Consider the bones are big but the meat is delicious and tender

Multiple screens make it so there is not a bad seat in the house. We also hoped to find a place with more of a "neighborhood/locals" energy to chill and relax our tired dogs (feet) in...and also, if it wasn't asking too much, hoped that it would have a fun vibe. (*Check those criteria off). "Icing on the cake", for us would be if the location had decent food. (Check that one off and put an exclamation point behind it--as the nachos we had were, "Fire".) As fate would have it, a lucky break was to be had as we walked in to the very-full bar. There, before us, were two stools at the bar (*the last remaining spots in the place) and they happened to be open. Side note: The bar has a speak-easy attached to it, and one day, we are gonna try it. Going there has been mentioned a few times when we have chatted with locals and tourists regarding memorable and unique things to do. Our servers were pleasant and accommodating despite the fact that the place was "choke widd plenty-kine cust-a'mah" (local pidgin for, full of customers). It's a hard balancing act to make patrons feel welcomed, but also not leave other thirsty tables waiting for too long. The two pretty blondes working that afternoon did a fantastic job at this. My seasonal sour beer hit all the right notes, and my wife seemed to enjoy her less exotic tap beer (Blue moon with an orange slice--served ice cold). There is a ton of beers to choose from here. Lighting in the Kailua Tavern is kinda darkish (not a problem, as I like me a dark bar sometimes). The locals were very-welcoming. One guy offered his table to us when he noticed our food had arrived and our plates were a bit pinned in. Also, anyone who happened to be sitting near us immediately engaged in friendly banter about the games. One guy of Tongan decent, who was probably 6'5" and had muscles piled-on to his massive frame came over and leaned in very close to ask, "Hey DEN, Bradah, YOU MIND FOR IF I GO DANCE WICH YOU DATE?" (*That didn't happen, I thought channeling a classic moment from the bar-scene in, Animal House, would be funny...but like the Toronto Blue Jays in the late innings of last night's game, "Swing and a miss". ) The Kailua Town Tavern was the opposite of a swing and a miss for us. It was fun and a good place to "chill"; the vibe was what we had hoped for; and of special note were the steak strips on the nachos, as they were superb.
