I enjoyed my visit to Big City Optical. I had an exam with Dr. Wong and she was very friendly. When it was time for me to pick out my eyeglasses, the front desk staff brought me frames that they thought would go well with my face shape. I found this very helpful, because as much fun as I've had randomly wandering into eyeglass stores and trying on frames just for the heck of it, when it came time to browse the selection after my eye exam, it felt a bit intimidating. This review is only about the 5653 N. Clark location. I have had positive experiences at other Big City Optical locations, and with the company owner, who was able to resolve my issue. However, I experienced multiple issues at this location. The eye exam software imported incorrect prescription data (I was told it imported another client record), so that took extra time to correct. The wellness exam equipment did not function properly, so it didn't produce any useful results. That said, I did like the optometrist, who was able to work through these issues, carry on with the exam, and write my new prescription. So I recommend the optometry staff. My larger issue was the sales experience. The store manager tried to upsell me on a nighttime eye mask--not something I've ever experienced before. And the store manager did not take the time to properly fit me with frames. I was sold two frames that were too small and unwearable. I went back to do an adjustment. That failed. Then I was referred to another location to look for a substitute frame, only to be told it would be an additional charge. On my last visit, the store manager retreated to the back room until I left. Again, while the company owner has been able to resolve my issue, I will not be returning to this store location. 1 star for this location but much better experience at the 5301 N Clark Street store. So I give the entire slightly stressful buying experience 2 stars. read more

I can't say enough good things about Big City Optical. I broke the arm off of my old glasses and they were able to get me in the next morning. It was time for an eye exam anyway and Dr. Richie saw me as soon as I checked in. She was friendly, thorough and explained everything about my exam. Next up April took me frame shopping. She's a blast- also super friendly and upbeat and positive. We agreed on a new style of frames for me and found the perfect pair. No up-sell- no kidding. The pair I got were one of the more reasonably priced in the store. We got another opinion from Ty, who signed off on them and started running my insurance. Went here for the first time about a month ago. I have had glasses since seventh grade and been to numerous different optometrists. Dr. Rasa Tamulavichus Went above and beyond and did numerous testings that no other optometrist has ever done. She also really spent her time with me and answered all my questions thoroughly. The staff was also absolutely fabulous and extremely helpful. They have an amazing eyeglass selection. When I first called, Chuck not only was delightful to talk to, he went out of his way to double check that all was good with my insurance so there would be no surprises at the appointment. This place was fantastic!! I live right around the corner, so I decided to pop in just to look around their selection, but the staff was so friendly and attentive I decided to just get my eye exam right then. They were able to see my right away, and my eye doctor was great - I unfortunately forget her name, but she was exceedingly patient and friendly, and didn't mind me being a little jumpy about the glaucoma test ;) The GM, Chuck Stephenson, helped me personally, and he was wonderful. He looked up my insurance plan to ensure I got the best deal available to me, and he helped me make my selection. In the end, I chose a lovely pair of Kate Spade glasses, and just a week later I was picking them up! They fit perfectly and I love them. The whole process was so easy and quick. The attention the staff gave me was great, and they had wonderful attitudes as well, very down to earth and just super helpful. I wish I could give 5 stars. The staff was very courteous and patient. I went in to have sunglasses made with my new prescription. I was very disappointed to learn they only accept 2 types of insurance. Neither one was mine. While I was there I asked them to adjust 2 paires of glasses that were not purchased at this location, They gladly agreed to do so. They spent more time fitting my glasses then Lenscrafters did the 3 times I went back there. When I left there my glasses were fitting very comfortably. When I asked how much I owed they said nothing. They would definitely be my go to place for glasses if they offed more insurance options. read more

Started out good. I picked out a great pair of glasses, but went downhill from there. The optician gave me the wrong prescription. I had to come back and get the prescription checked. It was off so they had to get me new lenses. This took 3 weeks. When I called to check, i was told that I was called a few days ago. Not true, as I would have gone in to get them. read more

Solid eye exam and thorough appointment, very friendly optometrist. Unfortunately I felt a bit pressured in the frame selection process. The sales team was friendly and I had initially asked to browse independently first but then they started enthusiastically pulling frames for me to try on. I didn't have time to check the prices of what they were showing me, and before I knew it I was holding a $499 pair of frames and a pair of sunglasses I didn't know I needed. They calculated everything and even with my insurance it came to almost $1000. I was so flabbergasted and whiplashed by what had transpired that I completely retreated from the whole process and left empty handed. Maybe they had less expensive frames or could have stuck to what my insurance would cover, but I didn't feel like I could advocate for my financial situation. We have purchased glasses for my husband and daughter here in the past year and could not be happier with our experience. We will all be coming here for our exams and glasses in the future. My husband has a very strong prescription that requires thicker lenses than normal. Chuck was able to help us find the perfect frames to accommodate the lenses that look great on him. When we were having trouble deciding between two pair, he took pictures for us and emailed us side by side pictures to help us make the decision. I highly recommend Big City Optical for anyone in the queer or trans community! I randomly walked in for the first time a few days ago because I was in the market for new frames, and the first thing they told me was that they don't organize the frames by "gender" it's all mixed together, just organized by designer/brand. That instantly made me feel at ease and comfortable explaining that I was looking for a non-binary style and didn't want any frames that would read as femme. Shout out to Ty, who helped me find the perfect frames that were exactly the style and non-binary vibe that I was hoping for. Ty was also great at explaining all my vision insurance benefits to me, and helping me decide on what type of lenses to get based on my prescription, lifestyle and budget. The only bad thing I could say about Big City Optical is that the store in Andersonville is kind of small, I only wish they had a bigger selection because I had such a good experience that I would go back and buy a second pair of frames there! I might check out other locations in the city in the future, if they're all as queer-friendly as the Andersonville one. read more

I didn't think I'd be writing a review for an optometrist, but this place took me by surprise. I walked in only because I needed contacts, but for some reason I was compelled to browse around. Maybe its the lighting or something, but the atmosphere is clean and welcoming. There are no glaring adds or posters hanging on the walls and staff was very comfortable and helpful. I was never a fan of glasses, but this place has some really unique inventory. I went for contacts (VERY affordable) but I am heading back for glasses. Every interaction I had with the staff was great, whether it was the call to set up the appointment, to change the appointment, at the appointment.... Everything! I recently got new vision insurance, but the insurance company was super slow to input me into their system. Big City Optical patiently followed up with the insurance so I didn't have to do any work, and Big City also was great about explaining my benefits, whether for the exam (glasses and contacts) or for for purchasing glasses/contacts. I'd previously been a Lens Crafters gal for glasses and eye exams but will be sticking with Big City because of the care. The eye exam was a little more old school (actual dilation vs Lens Crafters' fancy retinal scanning machine) but felt more thorough. Afterwards, the staff helped me pick out frames that were cute and competitive with Warby Parker. I really just can't give enough praise to Big City Optical. read more
