This place was hopping on a Saturday around 11 am with people finishing up breakfasts and starting to arrive for lunch. We found a seat and I ordered a tenderloin sandwich, Mom got a chicken fried chicken meal. Ordering was fast, but it did take quite a while for our food to arrive. Probably being one of the first tables to order lunch influenced the timing. As you'll see in pictures others have posted of the food, the portions are HUGE. I ate my delicious fries and a few bites of tenderloin and Mom had some nibbles around on hers and we were already full so we packaged up our leftovers to take home. We ended up eating 4 meals EACH out of what we'd ordered! Mom said the breading on her chicken wasn't very flavorful. My breading was fine, but it does seem to be a different coating on the two items. Minus one star for the comfy, but very soiled seats that looked like 25 years of science experiments gone wrong. read more

Big Creek is the quintessential country café. It's just off the downtown square of tiny Pleasant Hill, MO about 20 miles Southeast of the greater KC area. They serve breakfast all day and some of the best comfort food you've ever had. If you have an aversion to carbs, then stay away - stay very far away. A couple blocks away is the Big Creek Show Place where they have a fun live country music show every Saturday night at 7:30 pm. As you might guess, Big Creek Café starts getting jammed up a few minutes after 6 pm every Saturday, full of customers who intend to eat dinner prior to the show. I always try to be there by 6 pm to make sure I don't have to wait for a seat. Let me tell you about their crispy, flaky, pounded thin pork tenderloin. It's probably my 3rd favorite pork tenderloin in the KC area, which also means it's about the 3rd best in the world. You won't believe how big it is. The size of the tenderloin is at least 3 times the size of the hamburger bun it's served on. I always cut around the bun and take the other 2/3 of my pork tenderloin home with me and make two more sandwiches with the leftovers. The also serve the pork tenderloin "Chicken Fried Steak style" without a bun and covered with gravy with a side of mashed potatoes Their open-faced roast beef sandwich with thick brown gravy is always a hit with my wife. They also serve hamburgers, meatloaf, salads, sandwiches (such as ruebens) and I love their breakfasts, particularly the biscuits and gravy. They have a fun special each night, usually tacos on Saturday nights, and their homemade pies are always delicious. They also have kids meals and some "senior-sized" meals for smaller appetites. You'll notice a model train track hanging from the ceiling in the dining room. It's a fun touch but for some reason the train only runs occasionally. They should run the train every day in my opinion. The servers are always very helpful and upbeat, and the entire restaurant exudes a friendly family atmosphere. If you enjoy down-home cooking, you'll like Big Creek Café. read more

The fried chicken dinner here used to be amazing and delicious. However our last experience was terrible and we had the worst waitress. My parents said the last time they went there with family they had to wait over 2 hours just for breakfast. So sad it's going down hill. Previously I would give them a 4-5. We ordered meatloaf & hot beef sandwich. At 45 minutes the waitress says that those items are prepared by order. They make it, freeze it, thaw it? Then serve it? Craziness..when we asked about our meals the waitress launches into all the reasons for our wait.. then says " if your going to be rude I can ask you to leave". You don't have to ask me to leave.. The service was absolutely horrible, as soon as we sat down we were asked "what do you want for drink" in a rude tone. No introducing herself nothing. Did not check up on us once. Was disrespectful to the tables around us as well. The food was good but service was so bad I will never go back again. 40 minutes to get over easy eggs with the whites not cooked and a country fried steak I couldn't cut with a knife.

We tried to eat there for lunch on Dec 11 and couldn't get any service. They weren't that busy and they sat us in between two other tables. We waited 10 mins with no greeting. A big table came in after us and got immediately seated and their drink order taken. Then two more tables came in and they got seated and their drink order taken. Meanwhile we were still never greeted and never had our drink order taken. We left after 15 mins without anyone greeting us. Food was amazing. We had the tenderloin that's as big as a babies head. Very tender and plenty to share. The restaurant was full and we waited about 25 minutes for our food. Our waitress never came back after she took our order or for refills, but all the younger ones would help if you asked. Definitely would go back again. read more

Wish I read all the reviews before we went to the Big Creek Cafe. We were looking for a locally owned place for a couple of hamburgers. We were going to hit the farmers market and small town shops. First clue that we should have left was that the cloth chairs were overly stained. Our waitress seemed good. She's kept checking on our drinks. At 20 mins we asked how much longer. She came back and said they are working. After watching others get their food that had come in after us. We watched the waitress, darting looks at us. Like she was unsure what to do. She came by to ask again about our drinks. At that time we told her it's been 30 mins for a couple hamburgers and some fries. She offered to go check again. We told her if it's not ready in 5 mins then we'll pay for our drinks. We then heard someone yell at the cook. "cheeseburger only takes 10 mins. They are thin they cook fast." That was it for us. We got up went to pay for the drinks. We explained we can't wait any longer. She waved us. We had to find somewhere else to eat and will miss the farmers market that closes at 1pm. Went there once for carry out and was surprised at how dirty the dining room was. The food was ok but I can't get past the old, run down and dirty dining room. Makes you wonder what the kitchen looks like. I STRONGLY recommend they spend some money and do a remodel. Sometimes things that are old look dirty no matter how much you try to clean. This place gets ZERO STARS!!! TERRIBLE!! Waited for over an hour AFTER we ordered. Finally we spoke up and ask for our order 2GO. They didn't apologize or anything and they literally just put everything biscuit AND gravy together in the box. Our first time and will be back for sure. We ordered the chili, baked potato, coconut cream pie and apple pie. Everything is made at the restaurant, from scratch. Large portions and inexpensive. Hubby liked the chili and couldn't even eat it all. The pies were very good. Chili with cornbread $4.99. Pie $2.69. The staff was friendly and service was good - both are always a plus. Second time here - for lunch this time. Grilled cheese, tuna melt and to go coconut cream, banana cream and apple pie. Hubby said it was the best tuna he has ever had. Not too dry, not too much mayo. They aren't skimpy in the amount the put on the sandwich either. Can upgrade to fries for .99 and they were good too. So far batting 1000! read more

We waited for over an hour to get our food on a fairly steady, but not busy Saturday. The meat was cold, with grease pooled on top and the potatoes were instant. The server was polite but the last straw was several local families getting their food before us. This will be our last visit here. read more

I normally only do positive reviews but I drove a long way only to be really disappointed. I've eaten here several times when I came out and visited a friend of mine but today I thought I would try French Toast then I had the senior Bacon and Cheese Omelet. The Omelet and tea were great but how you mess up toast and French Toast I cant figure out. The toast that came with Omelet was burnt black on one side and normal on the other side for both pieces. How is this possible? I think it is time to invest in a new toaster. Then the French Toast tasted was so nasty tasting I couldn't even eat it and they still charged me for it. I gagged trying to get the few bites down then said forget it I didn't want that taste left in my mouth. But the main thing was good and the service was excellent as usual. Won't make a special trip out there again and may go to Grits and Grace's next time I'm out that way instead of going here. read more

It was 3:00 pm and the kids and I were starving after an early morning and missed lunch. We were actually headed for another cafe in Pleasant Hill, but we found a parking spot in front of Big Creek and decided to stop there. The service was slow, but friendly. The food was worth waiting for. My chicken fried steak was an ACTUAL STEAK, not the coated leather that many places serve. The breading was crispy and flavorful. The servings were large (all three of us took home enough for dinner). Prices were very reasonable. Free drink refills. We'll be back. read more

We are not local to the town, but live close by ... My sister lives in Pleasant Hill and on occasions would meet with her at the Big Creek Café in Peasant Hill for breakfast or lunch. My complements to the chef, we have never had a bad experience with the meals or service ... one day my sister was coming from Warrensburg and decided to stop at the Lone Jack Café in Lone Jack MO. Her daughter and grandchildren were with her she experienced bad service, bad attitudes. The menu is mostly al carte, with small portions and extremely expensive to top it off. I myself has had several unsettling situations with Lone Jack Café myself ... I ordered the special one evening; had to send it back to the kitchen three times and could not believe what took place, my mother had her meal but I decided to not eat and set and waited her to finish her meal. We have not been back since ... We decided to make Big Creek café our place of choice for obvious reason ... Good food, great friendly service, family oriented, family atmosphere ...
