I stumbled upon Big Daddy's after spending a long time at the DMV. I was hungry and the BBQ smell alone was making me salivate. I was greeted by the staff and they patiently waited as I figured out my order. I ordered the rib tips with a side of Mac and cheese and corn soufflé, which also comes with corn bread. The plan was to take the food home and eat but the bbq smell was calling out to my stomach. The rib tips are cooked to perfection, falling off the bone and slathered with a healthy portion of bbq sauce. The corn soufflé is crunchy on the outside and sweet and gooey on the inside. My expectations have been pretty tempered since I started investigating the northern Rockland County food scene, but this was a decent find. I stopped by to grab some takeout last week after developing a BBQ hankering. The one big caveat I'd give to anyone who's not familiar with the location - the parking situation is ROUGH. I had to do a U-turn and then probably ended up parking illegally by Big Daddy's kitchen off to the side (which I felt like I could get away with since I was just running in and out). If I were them, I'd include very specific information on their website concerning where to park. I would guess the easiest/best place would be the parking lot for a different business on the side closest to 202 going west, especially since there was a Big Daddy's van in that lot, but be aware that the parking lot directly behind the restaurant is covered in no parking signs and seems to be for the exclusive use of tenants in a different building. I opted for the brisket combo ($29), which came with two (2) sides and a piece of cornbread. It's a little pricey, especially for the area, but I feel you're always paying for the BBQ prep with this kind of food. The piece of cornbread it comes with is pretty small - I think they could afford to make that a bit bigger, but I thought the other sides were pretty generous, as was the portion of brisket. Also, there were definitely some cheaper sandwich options that were less than half this price, so you could opt for something less stressful on the wallet if needed. Worth noting as well - it was a pleasant surprise to discover that some free brisket chili had been thrown into the bag. Very nice touch. I didn't end up sampling it, but it was a much appreciated gesture. The brisket was decent - tender and flavorful. There were a few pieces that were fattier than I would have preferred but overall, this was solid. Honestly, most of the time that I end up getting brisket there are two or three bites that are completely inedible, and that wasn't the case here. I also liked the BBQ sauce, which was on the sweeter side. The yams were good, though not great - I feel like texture is super important with yams, and these seemed like they needed to be cooked a bit more; I never see this term used for anything non-pasta, but it was slightly too al dente for me. Excellent taste though. The mac and cheese was great, probably the best of what I sampled. Wonderful consistency and taste. The weakest performer unfortunately was the cornbread. Not only is it a noticeably smaller portion as mentioned (and part of that could be the packaging - it's by itself in a Styrofoam container and looks even tinier) but it was also dry and crumbly. For me, the BBQ stars of the show need to be the meat and the mac and cheese. That was the case here, and the customer service (admittedly minimal due to this meal being takeout) was top notch. Definitely stopping by again, and this time I suspect I'll have an easier time parking with some much-needed experience now under my belt. read more

We found Big Daddy's quite by accident! Driving home from picking up my daughter in Brooklyn I said I knew a shortcut. Turns out...I did not! In my quest to get back on track we came found Big Daddy's Home Plate BBQ on Yelp! I can only say that the friendliness when you walk in the door in refreshing! We felt like we just stopped at a friends house for BBQ! From the Mac and Cheese, Beef Brisket, Pulled Chicken, Cole Slaw, Corn Bread, Baked Beans to the Peach Crisp for dessert we barely even spoke to each other. I think I grunted once when I wanted my daughter to pass the corn bread! There was a whole lot of finger licking, mmm mmm's and this is so good going around! I am glad I ran into this restaurant, totally by default. A friend and I ended up in these neck of the woods trying to go to an appointment at the DMV. Eventually got hungry and was on a scavenger for some food lol. As walking in through the door, we were greeted by Chris. He was very nice and polite. We asked what he would recommend and so forth. My friends and I were in the area checking out Letchworth Village and we decided to have dinner before making the drive back to the City. I ordered the brisket and ribs with collard greens and mac & cheese with a side of corn bread. Yum!!! Portions were good and the cost of the plate was $29. Not bad. The location is a small hole in the wall of sorts but they do have some tables for eating in which we did. The owner and the owners son were super nice and accommodating. This is the holy grail soul food restaurant that will make anyone go off their diet. No more skinny diet, vegan diet, paleo diet, keto diet, whatever diet... the food here is just too good for you not to drive up the mountains to what most people would call "upstate NY" but it is only a 1hr to 1.5 hour drive from the city. You're not totally in the middle-of-nowhere-mountains but there is one bar of cell phone signal usually in the area. The corn fritters are the best I've tried and they are really hard to make at home. Imagine sweet corn with a sugar gravy coating fried to perfection with a corn bread coating. This is the second time I came back because the corn fritters are that good. The BBQ meats are also great. The pulled pork has sweet BBQ sauce and it was devoured in less than 15 minutes. The beef brisket was a little too oily but it was so tender with a savory tomato sauce over it. My order was ready in 20 minutes after calling in with the number. You cannot make an order at the restaurant. Other patrons were also waiting in the parking lot next to the establishment so call to order thirty minutes before you arrive. read more

Took a day trip up to this neck of the woods to go apple picking. Was disappointed to find that the bbq truck and apple cider donuts were weekend only. However, Big Daddy's Home Plate BBQ came to the rescue! Good prices for SO much food. My friends got the pulled pork and I got the kielbasa and brisket combo. We all got Mac and cheese and beans. All combos come with corn bread. The menu was so enticing it was hard not to order more! The brisket wasn't too tough and came apart beautifully on the fork. The kielbasa had a nice char on it without being burned, still juicy in the middle! No complaints about the beans and the Mac and cheese was some of the best I've had in recent memory. Seriously, if you're hankering Mac and cheese just go here. But also it'd be impossible to not get more. They're taking all proper covid protocols. Stay safe all and eat well! read more

The ribs was too soft. You want them to be bite off the bone tender, not drop off the bone soft. The m&c was nit good at all! No taste and runny. The collard greens was the best item in the order and the potato salad was just bad! Big chunks of undercooked, hard potatoes and no flavor at all. My buddy asked 'What's the best Chef told us to get the Brisket sandwich and put the cole slaw on the sandwich! Man oh man was he right!! The atmosphere: Definitely a hidden gem of rockland county. Small, but mighty. The building is filled with the aroma of good food.. lol really. The smokiness mixed with the just overall food smell was amazing. The overall softball theme, with the photos of big daddy's teams and family , made it feel like I was walking into my family house. Instantly greeted with a smile and a hello from the chef, I knew this place would be good. The food: The brisket. Tender. Smoked to perfection. Juicy. With a slight tanginess from the bbq sauce. I've been here once and was not impressed. The brisket is fatty, not much taste. The ribs were not the "fall off the bone" type by any means! The collard greens were decent and very spicy. Mac and cheese was cheap quality. The prices are fair, but not cheap. The parking is non existent, but I guess you can park next door. It's take out only, no seating inside. I understand that we're in a pandemic and all but this spot is lacking when it comes to deliveries! I've had two straight deliveries that were lacking; the chicken is bland and nearly over cooked and not worth the price they're charging!! For the second time my order contained chicken legs and not a chicken thigh like I ordered!! Legs are my least favorite part of the chicken! Giving me extra legs didn't help! lol For this order I I wanted chopped pork but received pulled pork which I thought was just okay the last time I ordered it. If they were out then I should have been made aware of it!! This was also well before the dinner rush so I can only imagine if I tried ordering this later in the day! I'm not one to send food back if I'm not satisfied with what's on my plate but I wish there was a way to send what I received back for a refund and not inconvenience the dasher! Picked up the combo dinner consisting of 1 piece of fried chicken, 1 piece of BBQ chicken, 2 ribs, mac n cheese and corn fritters. The fried chicken was well seasoned, crispy on the outside, and juicy on the inside. The BBQ chicken and ribs had an excellent real smoke flavor with just the right amount of char on them. We got a Door Dash delivery tonight. The Quarantine meal...I've been here a few times for takeout and was always less than satisfied. Tonight, we ordered the sampler for $45. Everything was so spot on. The mac-n-cheese was super creamy, the chopped meats were delicious and juicy, and of our sides were great. Always and I mean Always get the Corn Fritters. They are 1 of my favorite sides from anywhere. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I like my brisket smoked. They clearly specify it is not-so-smoked but it's just my preference. I have their takeout menu at home, and I called in my order for an 8 piece rib combo with corn soufflé and sweet potato fries as the two side dishes. I picked it up at the restaurant, and the first surprise was the price. I certainly understand a price increase, but the 8 rib combo I ordered went up from $15.95 to 23.95! That's a 50% jump. Not good. I got home and opened the bag. I had asked that the fries be cooked crispy. Not only were they totally limp, but they weren't even fully cooked. I had to put them in the oven for 10 minutes to finish them. The corn soufflé was good but it was a really small piece which was finished in a few bites. At least the ribs were good. Found this place when I was in the area and decided to give the Spicy Caribbean Fried Chicken sandwich a whirl. I was warned that it is "pretty" hot but being a fan of spice wasn't worried. Well...dang, if that wasn't one of the best chicken sandwiches and hottest sauces I've had this side of the Caribbean! Simple and delicious, the dark meat was breaded and cooked to perfection and slathered with just enough of the sauce to give each bite the right kick of heat while allowing the flavor of the (presumably) scotch bonnet peppers to come through.
