We happed across this place when we found a coupon for it in our "Happenings" book. Boy am I glad we went. Now, we never make a trip up north without stopping at Big Daddy's. The food is good the portions are huge and the prices are low. I've had the Big Daddy burger (good), the club (good), the smother burger (meh...), the breakfast burger (incredible!). I had a 1/3lb burger with a heaping plate of hand cut fries ($5.95) Albeit, the food is not gourmet compared to a grass fed beef burger with Loire Valley goat cheese and an onion and lingonberry compote, it is solid and delicious. I've brought friends, relatives, and strangers to this place and everyone loves it. The service is honest but not sugary. I like it that way. Get over there. Leave in a wheelbarrow. You have to eat a double half pound burger with bacon, cheese, thick sliced ham, bbq sauce, onion, lettuce, tomato, pickle, with a heaping basket of fries (they advertise it as 1lb of fries but that's the biggest joke I've ever heard) - guaranteed that it's more than 1lb. Think of a 32oz cup from the gas station..the fries arelike 3 of those in volume. In my mind I kept telling myself that when I go to the Chinese Buffet, I can eat 3 plates and maybe even a small ice cream cone, so this should be possible. I went strong until there were only like 8 fries left (honestly...8) I hit a wall. I could feel that the last bite I took was still lodged in my gullet and had no where else to go but back the way it came. My friends kept cheering me on. I can't explain what I was experiencing but I'll try; You know when a woman is ready to give birth and nothing can stop it? I imagine that feels similar to what my esophagus was feeling. I did my best to push on (with water). Just as I triple finger shoved the last fry into my mouth, the girl at the counter said I won! I ran out of the door towards the dumpster in the back. Behind me, I could hear my friend say to the staff, "Don't worry, he'll pay for it", as if I was "gas and dashing". Everything was moving in slow motion. I could see the dumpster getting closer. This gave my mind the false impression that it was ok to start the gag process. It started coming up just as I reached for the dumpster lid. It started spraying out like a fire hose. The first portion of it hit the front of the dumpster and I could feel the wet flecks splatting back to me. The rest found its resting place nicely nestled between two black trash bags. I was super saddened to think that this would ruin my desire to eat a Big Daddy's in the future. (I once threw up strawberries when I was 7 and never ate them again until I turned 14). I don't know how or why but I'm ready to go back. And now, when I do, I'll be able to see my grease sweating face adhered to the "Wall of fame". read more

So while you get a ton of food for your money, the quality is questionable. There was an uncooked french fry in my friend's meal. And there was cheese from another person's meal on the bacon. I've been coming to Big Daddy's several times a year for my whole life, but my God, I've never had worse service or food from here in my life. I can appreciate the fact that it's hard to keep good employees when the government is working so hard to keep people unemployed, however, my understanding only goes so far. Burnt fries, forgotten toppings, twice the usual wait time, and servers who seem too busy talking to each other to do their job. It's a shame, because I love this restaurant and even have my picture on the wall (twice). No one likes a Karen, and I hate being one, but something's got to change. I ordered a burger with lettuce, grilled onion, pickle and tomato. Tasted utterly delicious. Was especially impressed with the bun: It had oomph, pushback -- substance -- not like the usual burger bun one can smash up into a ping pong ball size wad if one wishes. Reasons I'm giving only a three: * I wish one could order just the burger (or other sandwiches), without fries, at a lower cost. One burger alone is plenty to make a satisfying meal. * Place is a little grimy around the edges * They'd put a sign in the window supporting a divisive, hot, contentious community issue. When *any* business does that sort of thing it seems foolish because they're potentially chasing away customers who disagree with the sign's sentiment. Out of all our stops during the trip, this was one of the best. It was completely out of the way and inconspicuous however it was amazing. The burger was cheesy and greasy, covered in bbq sauce. Today I got my coney fix at an unexpected place...Big Daddy's on Piedmont in Duluth. My favorite coney joint is George's Gopher Bar in St. Paul. The bun is toasted, the wiener has a natural casing so it snaps when you bite into it...and the coney sauce is the best! I sat the counter so I had a good view of the grill. Even met the owner who told me the recipe was from an original Coney restaurant on Superior Street....aren't they all "original?" I ordered two and they came with a huge portion of fries, but one coney is never enough. The bun was just ordinary...not toasted enough to hold the coney sauce. The wiener was 100% angus beef...a large fat one without natural casing. The star of the show was the sauce. I'd give it 4 stars. What really impressed me were the burgers on the grill! I visited Big Daddy's restaurant Wednesday, March 14th on my final days of visiting the Sax Zim Bog to photograph Great Gray owls. While heading south to visit the Split Rock lighthouse I decided to visit ONE Duluth area restaurant. Yelp.com helped me decide which one. So out of several options to chose from great photos and spectacular reviews led me here. As I drove up I was stunned by the small size of this place. And when I entered into Big Daddy's there weren't a lot of people there. Being from Chicago I chose not to judge a book yet by it's cover. I sat down at the counter for a closer encounter with the staff and the locals. After reviewing the menu it was very hard to decide what amazing entrée would be my first selection. Being this was a burger joint and I currently live in a state (Iowa) that has no real great burger solutions... I went with the Dave's Smothered Burger. Not only did I receive a whole pound of French fries with my order the burger itself was larger than life. I don't think I had ever seen a burger this big. The size though, would pale in comparison to the taste. This burger not only was rolling with fresh ingredients but it was tender to the bite and the chili piled high above was hands down great chili all by itself. Although some have complained about high prices here... you get what you pay for. This place will probably always keep in stock to go boxes because you get your money's worth here. I enjoyed this place so much I came back for breakfast the next morning. I knew if I hadn't I'd be in a world of regret until I had returned. When you walk in most people there seem to know one another, and the owner, big Daddy, greets many regulars by name. This place is sort of a hidden gem of burger joints in Duluth. It's location is out of nowhere but this shouldn't be a problem with the addressed provided by Yelp. Upon entering, you see photos of the hall of farmers who did the burger challenge, if you look close enough there's an Asian dude in there. That's my tiny friend who eats a lot and never gets fat. I recommend getting the big daddy burger, it really is the only way to go. By the way, their fries are amazing and service is prompt. Sure, this isn't the cleanest place to dine in.
