I stumbled upon Big Dip when I first moved to the area two years ago, as it's by my chiropractor. I'd dubbed it my favorite spot in town, but I think it may have been bested recently by a competitor or two. On my last visit, my milkshake was practically milk and no bueno. I was with my mom during that trip, and she reminded me I also had a bad milkshake there at the end of last season. The problem is that it tends to be busy that bringing it to the attention of an employee means cutting the line...I did reach out via social media and I was told to order milkshakes 'thick' going forward. I went this past Thursday and ordered a vanilla cone with sprinkles. The vanilla was way too soft, and shouldn't have been served. I think that might have been the issues with the milkshakes-- the ice cream isn't actually the way it should be. My mom's chocolate peanut butter cone was fine, however. With prices being what they are and my last 3 to 4 trips having been underwhelming/super disappointing, I think it is time for me to move on from the Big Dip. read more

Big dip is great. They have reasonable prices, friendly staff, and great options. HOWEVER, please be aware they will NOT let you eat the big giant ice cream cone on top of the building. They get real mad when you get up there and try to lick it. They say it's no real ice cream but I know that's not true! I came in the middle of the night with a ladder, climbed up and started munching that ice cream before the police intervened. It's real ice cream! Real delicious ice cream! I don't know how they keep it from melting up there, but whatever they are doing it's working. Nothing hits on a warm summer evening like soft serve and this hit hard. The service was great and offered us a free sample of the pumpkin/vanilla swirl. Their pumpkin flavor is outrageous. We bought pumpkin wheels for at home. While there we placed an order for soft serve to eat in the back where they have picnic tables set up, as well as much larger napkins than what's available at the counter. The black raspberry soft serve was great. It was very smooth and flavorful. My husband has the vanilla soft serve with sprinkles in a small cone. He said it was great. Word to the wise, the small size is actually pretty big. I was actually kind of surprised at just how big is - not complaining though! I loved this spot. Went here specifically for the Hershey's ice cream but unfortunately they do not carry a lot of their flavors. In particular Hershey has an exclusive flavor for the last few years called Banana Moose Tracks and they'd never heard of it. They need to get more flavors. However, I'm not dinging them for that. They have excellent prices and are fast. What they need to fix here is this idea that of small medium large sizes AND different # of scoops both. I have never been to a place that has medium size scoop or large scoop other than kiddie size maybe. It is a bit ridiculous. If I want a hard cone I want to get one scoop or two or maybe three but dump this scoop size thing. How is anyone supposed to know what a scoop size is supposed to be? I'll judge the quality of the place and the value based on what you give me for a scoop which frankly was smaller than I expected for a medium which I'd have expected to be average size. Either way it just complicated what should be a simple process. Their waffle cones are average and seem like off the shelf grocery store style and aren't particularly large. Kudos however for around the back having a napkin dispenser. Too many ice cream shops have no dispenser regularly available or are super skimpy and when you have small children you need need need napkins. We went here twice, about a week apart. First thing I do at any new place is scope out their soft serve flavors. If you've got something other than chocolate/vanilla/dole whip on tap you're already a leg up over most places. I honestly don't even remember the full selection, I saw peanut butter and that was the end of it. Chocolate peanut butter twist was great by itself. My girlfriend went with pumpkin. The cones they use are kind of weird, they look like somebody put something heavy on the box and smooshed in the whole sleeve. Their shape makes them less structurally sound and it actually changes the way you eat it. We put ours into cups anyway, so it wasn't as big a deal. The hard ice cream is Hershey's brand, so on day 2 we stuck with the soft serve to see what this place had to offer uniquely. We both (immediately) picked the same kinds, and this time used them as a base. I got a flurry with the pb soft serve and she got a milkshake with the pumpkin. Both were made about the same you'd expect from anywhere else, but having those flavors as a base was incredible. Nothing else about the menu or the place itself really stood out, but aside from a few places that rotate special flavors, this is the only place I've seen with these flavors. Best ice cream in North Syracuse. This is our favorite place for ice cream. I think the staff are so energetic. Very helpful. With a peanut allergy this place takes extra care and precautions. When you mention a peanut allergy they immediately remove their gloves, wash their hands, and put on fresh gloves. When they do this for an allergy it makes me feel like they care and want you to be safe. I've been to other shops where they just use a napkin, and dont remove their gloves to prepare the ice cream. This shop wants you and your family to return and they want you safe. They have tons of different flavors of ice cream. They have their specialty ice cream dishes with odd/funny names. Well I was just going to comment to Dave's review from our visits here over the last week and apparently I can't so here is my take on Big Dip. A. If your name is Big Dip you should have a good chocolate dip. It was waxy, low on chocolate flavor, and made my ice cream hard to eat. I love a good Dip on my ice cream just not here. B. The chocolate peanut butter swirl I found to be quite tasty and reminded me not of a Reese's cup but more of a chocolate peanut butter pie. C. The dole whip. It's pineapple! And it doesn't taste like sorbet. It reminds me of home (Florida) not only because Disney but sun groves down in clearwater blocks from my childhood home. We will be back and Dave will just have to stop being adventurous and get his staple chocolate soft serve. read more

I scream you scream we all.... eh you know how it goes, again Naomi and I wanted ice cream as we do in the summer. But I'll admit this took two shakes to give them a fair go. Shakes ha! Anyways, I was gonna go to my usual ice cream spots but the first attempt we ended up at big dip but I couldn't remember when they closed and upon trying to find the hours I saw something that made my sweet tooth yearn, peanut butter chocolate twist ice cream. And it was a "special" flavor they offered. Well you didn't have to twist my arm. Off we went to north Syracuse. I'll admit, I wasn't impressed by this special. I had it in a waffle cone with a fudge dip and expected a peanut butter cup candy indulgence. All I was left with was a lack of peanut butter flavor. Waxy chocolate coating and a dent in my wallet. This special was so incredibly underwhelming I was gonna give a 1-2 star review and call it a day. But naomi saw they offered one of her favorite things on the planet pineapple dole whip as we were leaving. So we decided later on we would try again. Second time around last night I figured I'd go with another special and see if their specials are truly that. I went with a strawberry shortcake Sunday this time. And it was an improvement over the earlier disappointment. Nothing to scream about. But not bad either. Their vanilla soft serve has decent vanilla flavor and it had fresh strawberries and a whole lot of whipped cream. The major downside is the cake they use as a base. It's just a basic store bought mass produced shell thing that was so grainy once you got to the cake it just disintegrated and left the ice cream with a odd grainy texture that just wasn't pleasing. This place is a little more expensive than the other shoppes I go to. About 10$ for two people for pretty basic things. I probably will be back so naomi can get more of her Dole whip. I was going to give Big Dip 2 stars because I am not a fan of soft serve and their hard ice cream is not that special. But then I realized that I am not an ice cream connoisseur. For all the self-proclaimed ice cream connoisseurs, I hope you have routine health checkups with your doctor regarding your sugar level. Anyways, Big Dip seems to have their own unique flavors such as pumpkin soft serve, which tastes pretty good and not so sweet. I got the cookie dough sundae with pineapple and marshmallow. I should have gotten some more crazy flavors. It also has a great outdoor sitting area with friendly staff who will tolerate you debating over your choices while at the counter, mostly because they are teenagers and bored outta their minds. There is no indoor sitting so you will be screwed if it's cold out. However, their napkin is high quality, not the cheap ones that stick to your hand as you try to wipe the ice cream off. You got to respect the little things. Not so much about their styrofoam cups though. The price is reasonable and the ice cream is ok overall. Pretty basic despite their unique pumpkin flavor soft serve. Would recommend if you are nearby the area. read more

They have DOGGIE TREATS (a vanilla ice cream with a small dog biscuit on top)! I think that's cute & awesome. The menu has an overwhelming number of options that include flurries (like a McDonald's McFlurry or a Blizzard at Dairy Queen), soft serve ice cream, hard ice cream (regular ice cream), kruch kote, slushies, milkshakes, cream sodas, smoothies, sundaes, root beer floats, hotdogs & more. There is plenty of outdoor seating areas (6 benches in the front, several tables with umbrellas in the back) but no indoor seating. The workers were young teenagers who looked extremely bored. They didn't greet us or say anything at all. I had a raspberry lemonade Dole whip soft serve on a sugar cone (size small). It was pretty large still & was nice and tart. I am a huge fan of Disneyland's Dole whip so I was very drawn to this flavor. I don't know why it's called Dole whip (what makes it a Dole Whip? there was no pineapple). The BF got a small Oreo flurry that was tasty but a bit too sweet. I loved the flowers outside, the whimsical giant cone on the top of the roof, the wooden picnic benches and the "hometown, small town, local" feel of the ice cream shop. I saw a red hard shell dipped ice cream (not sure what it was) that looked good. They're known for their hard chocolate ice cream dips. The soft serves come in many different sizes including baby and mini (?) which are both smaller than the "small." The baby is $1.15. This place reminds me a lot of a dipped ice cream stand I used to go to in Morgan Hill, CA called Snow White. read more

I have been going to Big Dip for years!! It's the BEST little ice cream shop. Flying into Syracuse tomorrow morning and hopping into my rental car, then Big Dip will be my first stop in Central NY! I have even featured them on my travel/gluten free blog, Unexpected Discoveries! My favorite.......Chocolate/Vanilla Swirl dipped in Cherry! They also have Gluten Free cones!!, sundaes, floats, and chocolate covered frozen bananas! Just created a Yelp account to write my first review. I was there at 10:20PM this evening. Lights were all on, a big "OPEN" sign aglow on the side of the building. I parked, walked up to the window, and a small middle-aged man closed the curtain in my face at the window. I let fly with an expletive, returned to my car, and drove off. I will never return again. Turn off your lights! And if you do forget to turn off your lights, apologize to the customer that parked and walked up to your window, don't just drop the curtain in his face. Brownie sundae had what appeared to be a Little Debbie cosmic brownie in it. They also only give half a cherry- very odd. Overall meh.
