Walking into Big Dipper, there are 3 cases of different ice cream options with 16 in each - that is 48 flavors. How's a person to choose? Well I couldn't pick just one, so thank goodness for the Triple Dipper Cone. This cone is ingenious with two scoop spots and then she topped it with the third. It was still difficult to narrow it down to three, but I landed on Blackberry Lavender, Lemon Bar, and the Beach Bum. They were all so unique and flavorful, I can't even pick my favorite. Today I was lucky enough to meet the owner and what an absolutely lovely person! This is a family owned ice cream shop and the service was great! When I walked in the door i immediately got a more "old school" ice cream shop feel from this place. There are 3 cases of ice cream to choose from!! So many delicious flavors!! There are toppings and sauces as well! I saw they have a banana split and a foot beer float that you can get with 1919 root beer! ( I'll definitely be back to try those!) The ice cream was creamy and flavored well! I love that there are take home options and the prices are decent. I was looking for a great nearby ice cream place after a day at the pool (bunker beach water park), and this came up. It is tucked in the corner of the nearby shopping places but is a really good hidden gem. There are sooo many flavors and they make it all homemade. They have been opened for 20 years and it's family owned. You can taste flavors which is really nice. I had the strawberry cheesecake and it really taste like it. Now I know what good ice cream is and I may have just ruined every future experience of ice cream that is not this. The texture is so good, and...I think creamy...that I could probably eat and enjoy any flavor here. I had the black licorice on mint Oreo in a waffle cone, and it was the best ice cream I have ever had. Seriously. I will be back. Big Dipper is awesome with a huge selection - I'm so glad we found them! The snobby places in the city don't have anything on Big Dipper. Sure, Big Dipper isn't in a fancy antique brick building. But they also have plenty of parking. I was really impressed: 1) They make their own ice cream; 2) They have a huge variety of flavors, some of which are pretty adventurous. I like the way everything is organized. Similar flavors are grouped into the same cooler. For example, all of the chocolate-type flavors in one cooler, all of the vanilla-type flavors in another, and all of the fruity-types in another. Very nice! They have an upright glass freezer of small to-go containers to buy and take home. The staff were very nice. One of the people behind the counter happened to be one of the owners. She was very patient as all 3 of us tried a ton of different flavors. Much to my surprise, there were a lot of customers coming in on a cold, gray, rainy, November 24th afternoon. I wish I could leave an actual review however there were NO dairy free options at the Blaine store for me to try today. They have 5 potential dairy free flavors listed on their menu but I was told they didn't have any today. We arrived at approximately 12:15 right after they opened. I specifically chose Big Dippers for the dairy free option. I'm lactose intolerant and it's something my family really enjoys doing together and I got left on the sidelines as usual. Groupon has been a great method of advertising for a lot of businesses, and this is another one of those establishments that I would have never known existed without my $5 for $10 discount. It happened to be near my uncle's house, in Blaine, and I decided to try it out prior to an afternoon fishing excursion. I will say that The Big Dipper is a little out of the way, but if you happen to be driving out of the cities on Central, or if you are in the Blaine area, I dont think there is a better option for ice cream. It's about a block off of Central on 125th and has a decent sized parking lot. They even have an ice cream vending machine outside, which was intriguing to me--I never even saw something like that in Japan. Another downside that I should mention is their hours. I believe they open at 3 or 4pm which I guess makes sense... But Ive already heard of two people who went only to head back home because it wasnt open. The staff is super friendly though. The lady that was there must have been the owner/manager. She explained every aspect of the products when I asked, and offered to customize anything I wanted. The ice cream itself is very good. I understand they make it all right there, on location, which is something I always appreciate even if it's getting more common up here in dairy land. It's not at the same level as Izzy's, Sebastian Joe's, or Grand Ole Creamery, but it compares well to Licks Unlimited in Excelsior. I had a customized sundae (reasonably priced at $4.25) which had a huge scoop of coconut ice cream, one of mocha chocolate chip, hot fudge, whipped cream and a cherry. My brother had a banana ice cream milkshake which had a very mild banana flavor, but still very good/fresh. Im going to estimate that they had about 25 flavors of ice cream, but many were out of stock around 5pm. Overall, Id definitely recommend it if you are in the area and craving an ice cream treat. I probably would suggest Izzy's to anyone in the cities, but if you are up for trying something new and getting quality ice cream, you wont be disappointed with what you get at The Big Dipper. I used to live walking distance from this place which was dangerous for the waistline... but the ice cream is amazing. We've been going since the first days they moved to this location, and it's only gotten better and better as they continue to grow and evolve their business. While we've since moved farther north, we try to make a point of visiting for a delicious treat whenever we're in the area. Their ice creams have never disappointed, and while their classics are all well executed the black licorice remains a favorite that I haven't found duplicated anywhere else. I would have given 5 stars but we asked for the girls opinion working behind the counter on what kind to try/get and her response was " I don't know. I don't really like ice cream." WTF!
