The coffee is good and the shop is cute and comfy but I can't get over how rude the woman barista was. Every time I'm there I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth cause this lady is just so bitchy. Big dog has always been one of my favorite coffee shops in the southside. I've been coming here for years and I've always enjoyed the service as well as the cold brew as it's one of my favorites. I really enjoy the environment on the inside and the decoration as it's a very relaxed and welcoming vibe. One major downfall about this place is if your looking for parking you'll have to find somewhere on the street because this place doesn't have its own parking lot open to the public. This coffee shop being in southside is more inviting to people on bikes or walking. There's no outside seating but plenty of room on the inside. The prices here are fair compared to other ones in the area as far as coffee goes. This is the best coffee shop in Pittsburgh. Hands-down. I love coffee, and I love coffee shops. I frequent many, and Big Dog takes the first place spot. Coffee. It is delicious. They use Intelligentsia, and Intelligentsia is the bomb.com. Whether you want their own Big Dog blend or an espresso based drink - their mocha is the best in the city - you can't go wrong at Big Dog! Also, when the summer months come around, they have a drink known as the Newf. It's gelato and espresso. The baristas HATE making it (for the most part), but my gosh . . . Kiss your bathing suit body goodbye and for good reason. That drink is out of this world. They also have an oatmeal bar and the finest baked goods to pair with your beverage. The inside vibe of this shop is unreal. It's my favorite. It's not your typical industrial vibe (which I do love), but it's like You've Got Mail with an urban flair. It draws you in. It keeps you. It begs you to come back. Just go and see. I've been known to sit in this shop and work for like *cough 3 hrs. Wifi. Clean bathrooms. Friendly baristas. A fire place. Patio seating (that patio is legit). Seriously, the list gets longer and longer as to why this is the best shop. Locally own (they live upstairs). I thought this place was really cool when I went, but pretty small. I was warned their coffee and food isn't the best, but I'm always one to form my own opinion. I ordered a caramel latte and an everything bagel with cream cheese. This just may be the cutest coffee shop in the Burgh! It has great food offerings, a great atmosphere and most of all great coffee (or chai in my instance!). Or you can choose to sit in a cushy rocking car and read. It may be off the beaten path of Carson St., but I don't think it would work any other way. Since I had never been in before, judging from only the outside, it looked like it would be incredibly tiny inside. Not the case, at all! It's huge! There's one large room with the bar and some tables and cushy chairs, then another large room with mostly tables. There's also a pretty decent size patio outside as well. And the bathrooms, large and CLEAN! Actually, it's all incredibly clean and well kept. This proves the point that you don't need to be a "perfect" Starbucks, nor a down and dirty local coffee joint. You can just be....adorable! But the best part, the drink offereings. Intelligentsia to be more specific! I love their Chai because it's a concentrate and not a gross powder. Thank gawd! They also have a full menu of espresso drinks and of course, coffee. They offer a bunch of different snacks from various local vendors like scones, breads and sweets. I stopped by on Tues. after attending the Chef's Best Dish competition at the Circuit Center Ballroom. It was bitterly cold and windy that day, and there weren't any free drinks at the event, so I figured I'd drop in for a nice hot drink before heading back home to Oakland. After perusing the tea menu, I decided on the 333 blend, which was a mixture of peppermint, chamomile, and another herbal tea, since I was in the mood for something soothing. While the barista was friendly, she didn't ask if I wanted my coffee to drink there or to go, even after telling me I could wait at a table for my coffee. She put it in a to-go cup, which meant that I didn't receive the full teapot that others have mentioned that you receive if you drink your tea there, so I was a bit bummed about that. However, the 75 bus came more quickly than I anticipated, so I suppose it worked out for the best, after all. In addition to the tea, I also ordered a buckeye candy, which I'd originally tried at the Beehive coffee shop on the other end of Carson St. Although it's been awhile since I had that one, so I can't really compare, I liked the fluffiness of the peanut butter in this one, which reminded me of the peanut butter found in Reese's Cups. As many others have mentioned, I enjoyed the atmosphere of this coffeeshop, which I'd describe as quaint and cozy. This is a welcome difference from the coldness and sterility of chain coffeeshops such as Starbucks and Crazy Mocha on the one hand, and the eccentricity of the Beehive on the other hand. While my experience was generally pleasant and I don't have any complaints aside from the barista's failure to ask whether I wanted my drink to go or not, I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to come here unless I happened to be in the neighborhood. Having said that, I can see myself dropping by if I'm in the South Side Works or down this end of Carson St. and am craving a hot drink or a place to hang out and kill some time. read more

They have ample street parking, an outdoor patio, and both cold and hot drinks at a good price - plus they have free wifi. Why four stars instead of five? Two reasons. #1 - sugar or splenda, no alternative sweeteners. #2 - the house blend Intelligentsia is one of the worst Intelligentsia blends I've had - acidic and citrusy without much of a base note....thankfully they also brew an estate blend and Black Cat at the same time. If I lived in Pittsburgh Big Dog would be my go-to for studying, hanging out, and reading. read more

We came here on a Sunday afternoon to do some work. There was still ample seating left, and the inside of the cafe was comfortably lit by the sun. The atmosphere was very comfortable and welcoming, with just enough music and noise to be ambient and conducive to working. We each had a latte and had a scone and chocolate chip cookie to share. The latte was good - it was really big, though! The medium size was more like a large in my books. The scone was very good, not too sweet with good texture. The baristas are well trained, and they use Intelligentista coffee, which I haven't tried before, but I will be looking it up to try again. We didn't try the food, but it looked good too. Only thing I didn't like was, we are clearly not locals, yes, we stand out like a sore thumb but I got the feeling like we were invading their space. I prefer my matcha strong so I requested it with 6g of matcha instead of 3g. Homie behind the counter made me pay for 2 whole matcha beverages both up charged for oat milk. The way I see it, more matcha is similar to adding more espresso. I don't think it's fair to charge me for 2 whole bevs. I was willing to pay whatever the cost to actually enjoy my drink but what I was handed was pale ass matcha definitely not 6g. The barista was not pleased by my request immediately and was barely accommodating. Based on flavor and color I don't believe that the extra matcha made it in the drink. The matcha quality was also poor. This was such a strange experience. I have worked in this industry for years and have never had such an unpleasant time. I hope that barista finds peace. read more

I had never been here before, but stopped by for a meeting. As soon as I walked in to Big Dog, I was in love. Very homey, coffeeshop vibe. I can tell that this place hoarded regulars and business meetings. A very cool crowd of suits, students, and tea drinkers were settled on the tables in the front room, chatting and studying away. I ordered a caramel latte and croissant with jam. I snuggled up in front of the fireplace to eat. The croissant was toasted perfectly. The strawberry jam was amazing. The latte was strong and hot. The fire was a great place to do some work. I moved into the pink room for my meeting and was greeted by large canvases of art and big windows. I thoroughly enjoy this place and am disappointed that in all my years living on the South Side of Pittsburgh, I've only started coming here this year. I usually try latte's when I go to new places and when I got a vanilla latte here it was delicious. It was smooth, sweet, and rich at the same time. Not too much foam either, just enough. Their teas that i've had also have been pleasant surprises. Instead of being given a mug and a bag of tea, Big Dog uses loose leaf teas and actual tea brewers so I could let the leaves sit for as long as I like to absorb the flavors and aromas. The coffee shop is set up in what looks like a home remodeled into a business with two separate rooms. The front room with the barista counter and register with a cozy fireplace in the corner, love seats, chairs, and casual tables. The open window to the street is nice and relaxing on a quiet day. Also, this place also isn't called Big Dog for nothing - it is a pet friendly establishment. They even have a small doggy biscuit pail by the front counter and 'doggy parking' out front. read more

It's not fair to compare this coffee shop to any others in the city. Each place has their own unique charm and style. Big Dog has some of the best flavored coffees around.
