Big Ed's is definitely still the best tasting pizza around. However, unfortunately, they now have the rudest managers. If you want to be happy with your pizza, just be ready to be ridiculed for asking for what you like and what you are PAYING for. The servers are wonderful. But they have to ask permission from the managers to make the customer happy. The managers act like you are trying to get it for free or they are just put out that they have to correct something that is not right. All managers are very young so maybe it is just inexperience. We loved this restaurant! Greeted with great smells and a cool nostalgic vibe. The menu is very small so if you don't want pizza and beer, this isn't your spot! Luckily, that's just what we wanted and it did not disappoint! Really good local draft beer list served in a big goblet. First, I think their crust is my favorite anywhere. Crunchy outside and chewy inside. I don't remember it being like that before, and we've been coming here for decades. Ed told me when I interviewed him during college that nothing would change. But that crust is a good improvement, as are the plates (no longer mini paper plates). Restaurant is still charming, bathrooms are still in the scary basement. Unfortunately... We were seated immediately (6:30 on a Saturday night), which has never been the case for us. But after we got our drinks and ordered pizza, the waitress tils us they were running about 45 minutes for pizza and was that ok. Too late to tell us that! But we did wait. It was pretty good pizza, but light on the toppings for a $20 medium. Very light on cheese and not very hot. If you've been there, you know they wrap a to-go pizza in brown paper. Insanity! We saw some boxes, so we asked for the to-go part of our order to be in a box. Check comes, 30 cents for the box. Will probably go back for nostalgia alone, and that crust will probably call my name, but it'll be pepperoni only next time. Those looked good and had plenty of toppings. read more

I appreciated that they sourced from a local place, Bentons for one of their toppings. Would love to come back the next time I'm in Oak Ridge. Established in 1970 and sticking to what works this impromptu stop for pizza was a delight! Our visit was on a Saturday afternoon and it was bustling but we got a seat at the counter for two. On the menu, there is pizza. And only pizza. Great! That's why we are here anyway. The dough is made in house and was probably our favorite part of the pie. We had sausage, mushroom, and pepperoncini. Sticking to the original way, pizzas are cut with scissors. After learning this, it explains our mismatched slices, not that we cared a bit. The soda is bottomless. The beer choices were great, and only $4 a goblet. Aside from the food, Big Ed's makes service a priority. The first four times someone came to our table it was a different server. Then Tabby stuck around. She was witty and personable. She was super helpful with some establishment back story and helped us "fluff" our to go bag. The bag is Big Ed's tradition. She also advised us there is a gift shop upstairs. We came in at the busy lunch hour and about half the seats were taken. Seating consiated of longer tables seating 8 and smaller tables seating 4 with 6 seats at a counter. Groups of 2 would sit with an empty seat between them at the longer tables. It worked. We were greeted quickly and we asked what she recommended. When I looked up, I saw this place has been in Oak Ridge for almost 54 yrs and Tennesseans especially from the Oak Ridge have sentimental and nostalgia attached to this place. So, I had to try it out when I was in town. 14" large bbq chicken cost $28 in a small place like Oak Ridge seems a little pricey...if this was NYC, I would have understood because I paid close $40 for just pizza and domino's 14" Memphis bbq chicken pizza cost $18.99. I've heard a million good things about this place and was really excited to try it out. I used to own a pizzeria myself back in the mid 2000's so it's always exciting to try new places. Sadly, the experience was less than stellar. The pizza was pretty good. I'd give it a 4. I really liked the sauce and the crust was pretty good. It was the service which was far from stellar. We arrived after 1pm on a Monday. It took 15 minutes to get greeted once we were seated, 15 minutes more for our beverages, finally after 50 minutes we got our pizzas. 3 of them and no plates. Nobody came back to check on us the entire time we were there (and nobody smiled or seemed happy to be there when serving us). I was craving pizza and this had the best ratings in the area - so for this town, yeah - it's more of a 4 ... but over all I didn't get what the massive fuss was about. First it's super busy!! Packed in fact. The service can't keep up and you barely see them. Might as well place and order at the counter, get a number - cause once you get your stuff it's like a rare endangered species sighting after that. Plus for us - we put our name on the list and then they lost our name on the list. After we saw several people who arrived behind us get seated we went to check and sure enough - "we don't have you on the list". Thankfully people behind us said yeah they been here a while. But onto the food and brews. First - I do LOVE that they had some regional brews. Beer and Pizza are a classic combo and I can't stand places that only serve the old school large corp beers. Big Ed's is legendary in East Tennessee. I hadn't eaten there in a few years, but when taking care of some business in Oak Ridge, decided to meet a friend there for lunch. What a treat! First off, just to give you an idea of how popular this place is, there was a line waiting at 11:45am on a Tuesday for the restaurant to open at noon. My friend and I decided to split a Big Ed's Special (medium) with no onions. While waiting we caught up & also enjoyed looking at some of the memorabilia on the walls. It probably took around 20 minutes for the pizza to come, but it was well worth the wait. Pizza was delicious, and I was glad to see that actual plates (instead of paper plates) are now standard. I've been going to Big Ed's For 50 years and have always felt their pizza was best in town and even compared to a few others out of town. I am partial to it because I grew up here and I will admit they have had some service struggles here and there but i keep coming back because it's still one of my favorite places for pizza and and beer and to have a good time with family and friends. It was a busy Saturday, but we were able to seated quickly and we had our drink order taken. The beer selection here is pretty good and features a variety of local brews, which is always a great thing. Draft beers are also only $4 for a goblet, which is a steal. They unfortunately completely forgot to get our pizza order for some time, but that was soon rectified and we ordered a large pie with pepperoni and mushrooms. The pizza was quite good and we ate every bite of it. Our friend also felt that the pizza still tastes like it always did, which is great to see. Finally, we've found you, Ed! After some lackluster pizza places, we have finally found a local go-to. While we aren't opposed to chains, we prefer supporting our mom-and-pop shops. Big Ed may have a small menu, but delivers some big taste! When I say small menu, I mean SMALL. No sides. Just pizza, soda, and beer. They even give you your carry out pizza in a bag, not a box. This may be my only "gripe," as our pizza was lukewarm without more protection from the cold. However, it was so tasty, that I would gladly eat this at any temp. It tastes like true NY style pizza. Placed a to go order. Was told 30 minute. An hour later I complained to manager that someone was seated 35 minutes after I placed my order and the already had their pizza. Wait time about 65 minute. Manager didn't apologize just asked the name. Then manager handed me 2 pizza that were already made. I get home and both pizzas are wrong. Big Ed's. My favorite spot in Oak Ridge. It's a staple. For me it's the vibe of the place and the memories that go hand in hand with it. The fact I can order a cherry coke with my pizza (I've had just about every one of them)...or if I'm really in a mood I'll order a root beer. It's the fact that I can order a plate of mozzarella for my little ones while we wait for our food. I went there most recently, now that I live in the Nashville area , about a month ago, but Big Ed's has always been the go-to place for excellent hand tossed pizza since my parents were in high school in the 60's. Even now over 60 years since the founding, you can still get personal sized pizzas with whatever you like on it expertly made. It's a a huge reason to keep going to Big Ed's. My dad took me there. Excellent service & pizza! Michael was energetic, charismatic, and super efficient. The menu is limited, but when you have something good, like personally made pizza dough, why complicate things? Eighteen toppings are available, and gluten free dough is available. To drink, choose from 14 items. Beer & ale were available, too. We were simple & easy. We had three 10 inch pizzas: the cheese pizza, pork sausage pizza, and pizza with everything. To drink, we had 2 waters & one iced tea. Michael got us oregano which was a good topping on our pizzas. We couldn't eat it all. We each ate half of our pizzas. Michael bagged up the leftover pizzas - even the leftover oregano! Michael got us our bill, and we paid with MasterCard - no American Express accepted. That was fine. The bathrooms were downstairs. Each was vintage & nostalgic of years gone by, clean & well stocked. Soap, TP, and auto paper towels were there to be used. We look forward to visiting again, especially if Michael serves up our food. read more
