We used to be regulars at Big Fun Cafe, but we stopped after a very unexpected incident about two years ago. We ordered a rice roll as usual--the female owner accidentally handed the dish to another table, and it sat there for about five minutes or so, while the couple was talking over the dish. Then the female owner apparently realized the dish was handed to the wrong table, she took it back into the kitchen (as a deception, thinking we wouldn't realize it's the same dish, we saw her through the curtain, she was holding the same dish the whole time--she didn't know we were watching and rightfully suspicious of what she was sneakily doing), then brought it out right back to our table. We did not want to say anything. But it was disgusting, people do spit onto the dish when they talk over it during those five minutes, you know? We were too shy to cause a scene or destroy the long standing relationship. Further, we couldn't afford to let that $12 or so dish go to waste. So we tried eating it. Afterward, we felt so disgusted. And that was the last time we went to Big Fun Cafe. Two years or so ago. Even after learning of its new location in Brookline, we are just so disgusted by the memory of the incident described above -- so we never tried their Brookline location. Note to the owners: for future customers, such mistakes do happen, but please have some integrity and just discard/trash the contaminated dish -- or if you want to be so cheap, eat the contaminated dishes yourself. I took the subway for 40 minutes to check out this place, and my mood after eating was as gloomy as a sudden drizzle... Ground Pork W.preserved Vegetables Clay Pot Rice梅菜肉餅煲仔飯: The English translation is already a bit misleading. This dish should be pork patty with preserved mustard greens, but what was served didn't match either component. First, this was not meicai梅菜(preserved mustard greens). Proper meicai should be dark brown and fibrous even after soaking, whereas this consisted of pale yellow granules, both in appearance and taste much closer to dongcai冬菜 (preserved Chinese cabbages). While dongcai can appear in some clay pot rice dishes, this was clearly not what it should be. Second, this was not a pork patty. The meat was simply loose minced pork scattered on top of the rice, without any mixing or shaping. As a result, it lacked the cohesion, tenderness, and springy texture that define a proper pork patty. There was even a slight sour note, which felt off. Third, the "claypot sauce" was surprisingly slightly viscous, like Singaporean dark soy sauce, and had a strong ginger flavor. I also tried the rice roll sauce; it had a normal soy sauce texture, but the ginger flavor was still very strong, meaning it was still not authentic. Given the stated Taishan background, the lack of traditional structure and technique in this clay pot rice was quite surprising. Compared to Clay Pot Cafe in Boston Chinatown, which offers a way more authentic execution, the difference becomes even more apparent. That said, to be fair, the rice itself was decent: grains were distinct, and there was a noticeable wok aroma. Milk Tea: The old menu called it "Hong Kong style milk tea," while the new menu simply said "milk tea," which seems more accurate. It was bitter at first, then intensely sweet, not fragrant at all--very weird. As someone who grew up in Guangdong, it's honestly frustrating to see it reduced to something so off. If you're looking for an authentic Cantonese clay pot rice experience, this would likely be a disappointing stop. read more

Nice place for Claypot rice and rice rolls just like in Taicheng. Wife wanted to try it since its hard to get back home. Everything was steaming hot and tasty. I really do consider this spot a hidden gem. Great price, great quality. Their steamed rice noodles is cooked to order. I tried their steamed noodles with curry fish balls. It was ok. Nothing too special. I'll most likely stick to my shrimp rolls and fried dough and beef brisket. I wish they added more curry sauce. Maybe I'll request for it next time. My go-to's include: the Yellow Eel clay pot rice, steamed rice rolls w/ pork (+egg), century egg + pork congee, and beef brisket & wonton noodle soup. It's definitely a smaller spot, with only ~ 5-6 tables... not much room to move around. This is the perfect spot to go for authentic Taishanese/Cantonese style Chinese food that you normally wouldn't find at most places nearby. Really good claypots with a solid variety. We got the Chinese sausage&bacon and eel claypots. There is a good ratio of meat to rice which some other places skimp on. The rice was also perfect with plenty of crispiness. Also got the curry ball rice rolls which tasted really good. The place is a little smaller so can't fit too many people at one time but things moved fast enough that didn't get congested. Service also really good and speedy. Highly recommend. read more

Big Fun Cafe is a hidden gem in Quincy. They specialize in clay pot dishes which are a must have in Cantonese style restaurant. Their menu is limited but thats not a bad thing. The restaurant is relatively small and only have 17-20 seats. I ordered Chinese sausage and bacon clay pot rice and shrimp rice rolls with eggs. They have extra sauce ready for you on the table for both clay pot dish and rice rolls in case you need more sauce. The rice rolls are perfect. They aren't stingy with the shrimp and the claypot dish is also tasted like grandma's cooking. Service was awesome. Server was very welcoming and considerate. Stopped in here, there's some street parking in the area. It's a little shop, the definition of a hole in the wall. A lot of to-go orders while we were here, they have a few small seats and they get you seated right away with some water in small styrofoam cups. They specialize in the rice noodle, making it fresh here. The fivespice duck is not too bad, probably better if chilled. You just have to watch the bone shards because they cut it up fresh. The rice is a broken rice in the clay pot stays nice and hot, and they have extra sauce to the side if you need it, the sausage and bacon version is good. Worth the wait! You need to go in person and get a #. Don't be surprised if you need to wait 30 minutes. Note: they don't take reservations and it's mostly tables that seat 2 or 4; one round table seats up to 8. They do have takeout. Keep in mind that all of their rice noodles have cilantro so make sure you request without if that's not your thing. The rice rolls have great flavor and are thin as they should be. The "filling" is not wrapped inside the noodles and really is a topping. Standard condiments for rice roll sauce & clay pot rice are in bottles on the table. A container of chili oil is also on the table. If you know you want clay pot rice, then you should order it as soon as you're seated because it could take a little while. Small, unassuming establishment. Their Cantonese comfort food did not disappoint! So familiar. The flat rice noodles felt so authentic I had to send a picture to my aunt in China! Great portions for the prices. The biggest downside is that you are sitting quite closely to other guests, which feels cramped and gives no privacy for conversations. The trade off is that they try to fit more tables into the small space to increase seating. Service is fast and efficient and food comes out rather quickly, so they try to minimize wait times. They take credit card which is a plus. We easily found street parking but not sure if that's always the case. read more

A very small southern Chinese cuisine cafe located in Quincy, just across the street from Wollaston station on the redline. Street parking is a little bit difficult to find as it is limited in that area. The cafe is small, there are only 5 tables. Food: Shrimp steamed rice rolls--Portion is 2x the size you normally get in dim sum. The steam rice rolls were thin and soft with a slight chew, making it super easy to eat (honestly I think I ate a little bit too fast). Every bite has cilantro and shrimp. The flavor is enhanced when you add the chilly oil offered on the table. Spare Ribs with Black Beans Clay Pot Rice--My favorite order, the rice is perfectly crispy at the bottom so make sure you mix and scrape the bottom of the pot. I think they can put a little bit more of the fermented black bean to hence the flavor more. I would order this again. Century old eggs with pork congee-- Very warm and honestly a comfort food IYKYK. Think they can add a bit more of the eggs. The congee is smooth and nicely made. Ice milk tea--Very good not too sweet. The tea can be slightly stronger. This is a no frills spot for some Cantonese comfort food. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu but the rice rolls are def a must get. For two of us, we got two rice rolls and a clay pot rice to share and it was plenty of food. The space inside is pretty small (only 4 tables) as we're pretty much sitting elbow to elbow with the next table. A very small Cantonese cafe with just a handful of tables. The service is reasonable. They seem to speak both Cantonese and Mandarin. The steamed rolls are really good. Perfect thickness and very flavorful. The wintermelon soup was also really yummy. Perfect amount of salt. My friend and I also got the pork claypot rice; it was really good. I was in town for the Boston Marathon and came here for dinner. I was staying in Quincy, so I frequented the Wollaston station across the street. The dining area was quite tiny. I saw 1 large circular table and about 6 small tables that they rearranged depending on the number in each party. Since the girl that was working the counter told me that it would be about 20 minutes for a table, I decided to just order my food to-go. I ordered the spareribs with black beans clay pot rice which just so happened to also take about 20 minutes for it to be ready. It wasn't bad, but next time I would want to eat that particular item at the restaurant as it wasn't ideal to be served out of a take-out container. I grabbed one of their menus on the way out. I would definitely want to make a return visit the next time that I'm out in the Quincy area to check out other items on their menu. read more

I've been here many times specifically for their steamed rice roll. It's the best I've had around Massachusetts. They serve Chinese appetizers, clay pots, rice rolls, soups, and rice plates for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's a small shop with seating to dine in. I usually come here for takeout. Street parking is tricky because this area is bustling and tons of people tend to linger. Plus down the street is the MBTA. Beef Brisket Steamed Rice Roll- Braised tender diced beef and tendon with its savory sauce served with the steamed rice roll. I'm glad they didn't drench it completely in sauce, I like to taste the rice roll. Priced on the higher side but worth it. Shrimp Steamed Rice Roll- Snappy shrimp and green onion rolled into the rice roll. Served with their sweet soy sauce. My absolute favorite. Overall Service: Ultra-friendly staff. Arguably the best food run by the kindest people in Quincy hands down. Their rice rolls are as authentic as you could hope to find, add double egg and their chili oil and you have one of my favorite dishes of all time. Solid Cantonese restaurant in Boston area. Got the beef chow fun and spare rib rice roll. Both the rice roll and chow fun were very chewy but a little bland for my taste. The downside is there is very limited indoor seating. Most people I saw were getting takeout but if that's not an option, expect to wait and possibly share the table with another party. read more

This was the perfect comfort food that I was looking for! Made the trip up here from Providence and was THRILLED to get some solid cantonese food on the east coast! First, the interior is quite small and crowded, so if you are planning to eat in, you should be prepared to wait. It's WELL worth the wait, however, as the food is incredible! For the three of us, we got a scallion pancake, the fish congee, the shrimp rice roll, the youtiao, and the 2 item claypot rice with frog and chinese sausage. Everything was spectacular! I have searched long and hard for the right youtiao on this coast, and this was IT! It was fresh, crispy, not too oily and not too dry--perfection. The congee was also just the right consistency (not too watery but not too goopy), and extremely well flavored. The claypot rice was also perfect, complete with the crispy rice at the bottom and extremely flavorful. The scallion pancake also had the best ratio of scallion flavor to dough without being overly dry or oily, and is the best version I've found in the Boston/Providence area! The shrimp rice roll was also excellent--no notes! Bok choy was fresh and delicious. The main server that we have was so sweet; she helped us pack away our food for us and was extremely considerate and accommodating. I would eat at this place every day if I were closer by! The only warning that I have has nothing to do with the restaurant (which if you couldn't tell, I love), but about the parking situation. DO NOT PARK IN THE LOT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE RESTAURANT. Apparently, in the extremely small text that is easy to miss in the dark, the owner of that lot does not allow parking past 7pm there, and only 1 hr parking earlier in the day. We got our car towed 20 min past 7pm as we were eating, and apparently the owner has nothing better to do on a Saturday night than watch her security camera and call a towing company to take your car away. I don't think there is a restaurant in the greater Boston area that I love more than Big Fun Cafe. It's a cozy, affordable place that does a lot of my favorite comfort eats (congee, rice rolls, clay pot rice). Like many people have mentioned, the wait for a seat in the small cafe can get quite long but I assure you will be in for a treat after! I'm not the biggest fan of soy milk but I make sure to order it every time I come here. The soy milk is creamy and delicious, at the right amount of sweetness. Their milk tea is also amazing and the flavor of the tea comes through well. The congee comes in a big portion so I would suggest splitting it with someone else. The dish itself is smooth and flavorful, and once paired with a Chinese Fried Dough from their menu makes the perfect breakfast combo! They have a large variety on the rice rolls you can get, my go to is always shrimp. There is the option to customize it a bit by adding egg and extra vegetables. The service here is like most Chinese restaurants. The staff is very direct but I haven't had a bad encounter with them so far. The interior is small and you might find yourself sitting very close to another group or even sharing a table but it's a compromise I'm willing to make considering the taste and the cost of the food here. read more

Located at the corner in the side street with no parking is Big Fun Cafe. A very small restaurant that only has about 4 tables. Known for their variety choices of rice dough which we ordered the beef rice dough and shrimp rice dough. We also ordered the wontons and the seafood congee. Congee had flavor but not much seafood. Rice dough was fantastic, slurpy, meaty and salty enough. Wontons need some work as they are small and not much taste. The broth had taste though. read more

Went to Big Fun Cafe and loved the little place that they have. They only have 4 tables, but everything looks in order. I ordered char siu rice noodles and chinese sausage and bacon fried rice for to go. They are all very good. The char siu rice noodle has a little cilantro in it and the rice noodle is fresh and very thin. The fried rice is so good, def recommend that one. I definitely recommend this place. Parking is a little tough, i'd recommend to park at the wollaston side and walk to brook street. read more

Such a cute little place for Chinese brunch. The homemade soy milk was so delicious and I enjoyed everything we ordered. Their rice rolls are better than some dim sum places I've been to because the paper thin noodles absorb the soy sauce so well. Adding egg, scallions, and cilantro to the rice rolls also give it more flavor and bite. We were surprised at how good the curry fish balls were with the rice rolls too. We came on a Saturday afternoon when it was so busy but the clay pot rice didn't take that long. The rice had crispy bits and was fluffy and fragrant, while the pork ribs were tender and falling off the bone. The best steamed rice rolls I have ever had. They are fresh made and have a silky texture that I have never experienced before. We got the shrimp, beef brisket, and char su pork steamed rice rolls, and all of them were delicious. You don't get as much protein in each of the dishes as you typically expect from pre-made rolls from other places but the ingredients tasted higher quality. But the rolls are so good you won't even care. There are 4-5 tables for dine-in but they are packed together. We got take out and picked it up in 30 min. Still warm when we got home. As a big fan of rice rolls I've been meaning to visit Quincy for a while, solely to try Big Fun Cafe. After trying delicious shrimp rice rolls in New York I was hoping that I could find that same joy in the Boston area. We had to wait a while to get seated for Sunday lunch -- it's a small space and quite popular. I of course got the shrimp rice roll with veggies. I didn't order it with eggs but that's what I got, which was fine. It wasn't the best rice roll I've had -- the rice roll itself was a bit soggy. The shrimp was a bit sparse and on the borderline of being tough. The chili oil on the side has quite the kick but also seems to have vinegar, so it ended up tasting a bit sriracha-y. I don't think I would come here just for rice rolls. The fish fillet with eggplant ($17) was really good. It had very good flavor and cook on both the eggplant and the fish. The eggplant was still beautifully purple while being super tender, probably due to deep frying. There was very little fish relative to eggplant -- for the price, I would expect more fish, but I'm not upset about having a lot of eggplant. We got the claypot rice where you could pick two meats, and got the beef brisket and spareribs with black bean sauce. The rice was meh -- it was just crispy on the outside and didn't have any flavor seep in. I prefer the rice at Claypot Cafe in Chinatown which has the soy sauce flavor cooked into the sides, and flavor from the meat on top permeating the rice. The brisket was quite tough and the meat got stuck in my teeth. The spareribs were okay, less tough but not the best treatment of the meat. Overall I wouldn't get their claypot rice again. Overall I'm glad I finally made it to Quincy to try this place. I unexpectedly really liked the fish fillet with eggplant, but the other things we tried did not meet our hopes. read more

I've gotten their homemade rice noodle with braised beef and separately shrimp with eggs. Have tried their rice clay pot but I'm thinking that dish is best served in house. The homemade noodle is fresh and soft. The braised beef is well simmered to taste, although the beef could use a little more tenderizing. Love the thin and chewy texture! It's very hard to find this in Massachusetts because most of the steamed rolls are very thick at dim sum joints. Happy to find the cafe because their chuen fun (steamed rolls) are as good as the ones in Manhattan NYC (Kong Khee) $6.95 plus tax so it's a good value since most of the steamed rolls are roughly $5 and up and not as tasty.
