Big John never fails to impress, always great food and a good size portion. Big John has always been one of my favorite places to eat.

Need to change their name to little John's steak and onion!! got a sandwich for $17.49. It looked good in the middle, but that was the only place there was any meat. It literally didn't have any meat more than a quarter of the way through each half.!!! it was full of lettuce and cheese! Literally ridiculous!!! I didn't even complain. Have eaten these for many years past and always come back to buy more when I am in the area. Well this time i was Holland Road store. Food was put together fast and was out the door with two 16" Super Steak, onion, cheese and mushrooms. Very disappointed in assembly as meat was all precooked and reheated on flattop. Mushroom was added after sandwich assembly on top, not cooked into the sandwich. For almost $50 worth of cheese steaks. We all found the sandwiches to be heavy on the salt. Not sure why, but never had them this bad before! I would not go back at this point, at least not to this location. There are several others in the area. It may just be this location. Not really sure. As expensive as it is. I need to watch where I spend my hard earned dollars. Very Disappointed!!! read more

First time having Big John's Steak and Onion. Honestly I have never heard of them until my brother had me stop at the Holland road location. I will say the food was fantastic and I will be stopping there more often when I am either heading up or down I75. I left full and ready to continue my 3.5 hour drive. read more

I'm rounding up and giving them a 5. For many years I've always wondered what these were all about after driving past them for years! I'm fairly certain there are not any in the Metro Detroit area but there are several off of I75 heading up North. Well today on my way back I decided to finally stop at one and give one a try. I got the basic steak, cheese and very light onion cheesesteak and added some veggies and sauces on top. I didn't eat the tasty looking bun as I'm watching my carbs. It was very good and I'd also say a good value for the $ too. The place wasn't the cleanest, tables needed to be wiped down, but the employees were all very nice! So there's another new place to stop, other than Halo burger, (another restaurant that we don't have in Metro Detroit), when heading up North. Menu on the sign does not include banana (yellow) peppers and when we got the sandwich it had them so we tried getting a refund and we were bombarded with racial slurs of us "being white" and "that this is a good area for us to get jumped" along with many other inappropriate racial comments by ALL three staff members, even the "manager" (male who gave us our money back). They wouldn't even take responsibility for putting yellow peppers on the sub when it IS NOT on the sign, I'm not sure how that is our fault ? They just made it a racial issue. Little things like these remind us that it is a very sad world where we can't even go to a sub joint without being ridiculed. read more

I try to grab a Sandwich here when I'm in Saginaw, since they're pretty tasty. However, when I went on Sunday, I was so disgusted about what I found in my sandwich that I still gag thinking about it. My husband and I decided to share one and as I was tearing it in half, I found a clump of hair scrambled into the meat. I'm not talking one strand, but instead it looked like someone cleaned out their comb in my sandwich. Unfortunately we were miles away, so the sandwich ended up in the trash immediately. 3.5ish rounded up. I got the regular/standard steak and onion and really enjoyed it. Being from southern Michigan, I couldn't help but compare it to Tubby's, and it falls a little short, although the bread seems to basically be identical. The best thing about Big John is that they grill the steak with the onions -- only certain Tubby's subs do that. The menu isn't big at all, but it doesn't really need to be. They do one thing and do it pretty well: subs. Still, I'd like if they had fries or some other side... maybe soup or something? Something other than a bag of chips (not that there's anything wrong with that). I'd recommend it. read more

No bathroom. Thought that was odd. The Steak & Onion sandwich I had today was TERRIFIC. I saw a billboard on 23 (or was it 75?) on our way home to Toledo and knew I had to try one of their subs. Beef is a bit overcooked, but the flavors from everything added was perfect. The servers were surprisingly friendly and the whole place seemed really clean. I would love to have a Big John's in Toledo, but it looks like they are focused on Michigan. read more

Food is okay, service is terrible. Asked for an extra red sauce and she argued with me because I only got one sandwich I only get one red sauce. Completely refused to give me an extra sauce. Since 5/1/14, I've been traveling between my home & Bay City and after seeing their billboards along I-75/US-23, decided that I had to have one. I wasn't disappointed either. I ordered a 1/2 of a Big John's w/mushrooms & onions & it was FANTASTIC. The beef was tender & juicy with enough meat, mushrooms & onions to satisfy an average (?) eater. I requested & received extra seasoning which adds a good taste to their thinly sliced steak. Naturally, I will be stopping there again & again. Don't expect any flashy decor or extensive menu. This is just a really basic, small place with a truly excellent sandwich that is a bit messy. Who cares as long as I don't have to frequent another fast food burger place. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants, and the closest big John to my house, after making the commute I noticed the 6 inch steak combo! I walk in and ask the cashier about it, and I ask if I can switch from the steak to a bbq chicken sandwich and still get the combo for $6.50 the employee who said his name was "Alex" was very rude, he was telling me to stop talking while I was explaining the complication to another customer, he was telling me welcome to the real world, and was saying that I can't say what I want and all of this stuff. I'm a Michigan native (born and raised in Saginaw) and currently live in Dallas,Texas. I have to say there isn't many days that go by that I don't crave the food from back home, and especially Big John's. As Chris stated it is uniquely Michigan and can't find that flavor anywhere, being in a big city the restaurants are endless, but nothing like the food that brings back memories. **On a side note, I haven't been back to Mich in about 2 years, and have been craving this so much i've decided to go back around the 4th of July to visit friends and family, but really just grab a couple sandwiches. lol read more

Oh Big John! I was born and raised in Michigan. I moved away from Michigan in 1999 to Oregon. I miss you John. Every time I come home to Michigan there are certain foods that I must have. The big john steak, onion, cheese,mushrooms and pepper Sammy is one of those foods. I didn't realize this location was here. I usually go to other locations but I was driving down the freeway on the way to my Dad's house from the Saginaw airport and saw the sign. It was like the angels were singing to me. So, naturally I stopped here. ( I usually fly into the Flint airport and stop at the location near there) The sandwiches are very well seasoned. They are filling. I like their sandwiches also because the meat is thinly sliced and piled high. The prices are really reasonable. They have been an institution in Michigan ever since I can remember and they are still in business. That says something since many places have closed in Michigan due to the crappy economy. If you have never been to a Big John's you should definitely stop and try it. They have 16 locations through out mid Michigan. Most are in Flint. As I write this my mouth is watering and my mind is singing HAPPY! read more

I agree with the post by Emma S. I travel back and forth to Flint on a regular basis and every now and then I get a craving for a Big John's sandwich. Sometimes I go to the one in Clio but this weekend I went to the one on Holland in Saginaw. I ordered the Supreme and it was excellent but I can't say the same for the people that work there. Very unfriendly. After I ate my sandwich, I mentioned to my girlfriend about how good it was and how they really loaded it up. Feeling pretty good about it, I shouted out a "Great sandwich! Thanks!" before leaving. There was 4-5 people behind the counter and not person responded or even looked up to acknowledge me. And it's not like they were super busy. It was 2 hours before the Super Bowl and a blizzard. There wasn't any other customers in there. Pretty pathetic. From now on I'll stick to going to the one in Clio. I used to love this place! Bragged about it to my friends at work but not any more! I get the fact that it's basically fast food and I'm cool with that! I also know that I'm going to eat inside because eating a steak sandwich while driving is not enjoyable and it's difficult! My husband and I decided to dine in and chose 2 subs...nothing extra...nothing special.... I dismissed the fact that the woman asking for our order gave 2 shits about what we were requesting! Didn't give 3 shits when she ignored us while the 2 cooks threw are food on the grill for 3 minutes and proceeded to put in a to go wrapper! But after you wrap the subs and than cut If afterwards, common sense would tell you that I really didn't want paper included with my lunch! Thanks for not giving any shit about me! Done with you!! They didn't want us there and it was clear on their faces! Being nice to your employees clearly gets you crappy service now! Negative stars if that was possible! This is a great sub shop. Simple but effective menu. Sub was very wet so I dont recommend eating while driving. But I do recommend stopping in and having a sub. read more
