I've been meaning to write this review for a bit. Hunan Restaurant is the only place I know of in the tri-cities that offers legit authentic Chinese food. They have a section of the menu called "Taste of Asia" that's full of delicious stuff. They also have a vegetarian chicken section with your favorite American-Chinese dishes. Try the Eggplant /w garlic sauce or the dried and fried green beans. Also the Ma Po Tofu(not vegetarian) is amazing. Cold Sichuan noodles are awesome as well if you like spicy stuff. On the vegetarian chicken side, we've had the orange, general tso, cumin, and Sichuan dishes and they are all very tasty. We've eaten there twice in the past couple weeks and it didn't disappoint either time. Warning... if you order off the Chinese section of the menu, it does take a little more time for your food to come out because they take longer to prepare. read more

Visited early on a Saturday evening (5ish) for dinner. Noticed very thin staff. Received our drinks quickly. Bit of a wait to give order, but soup and egg rolls were delivered promptly. Then we waited, and waited. After 20 minutes the wife was delivered her meal. I was told my dish would be a bit wait as they ran out of fried rice. What? You run out of rice at a Chinese restaurant at 5:40 pm on a Saturday? My meal was delivered 20 minutes later. It had perhaps an ounce of beef within and was cold. I believe the issue was the kitchen. Our waiter was running to cover the entire place. Food was not good and was sparse. Service was poor. We ate separately. I have had far better food at Chinese chain food places. Overall: pathetic and not worth their prices. No apology offered. Shall never return. read more

Rough. Started out with promise based on the menu (and photos of the interior looked lovely), but it quickly went downhill and our frowns just deepened throughout the entire awful experience. Food: we ordered Empress Sizzling Beef & Twice Cooked Pork. Server seemed to have never heard of TCPork before, so I should have taken a hint there. I pointed to the words "twice cooked pork" on the menu, and she politely said, "let me just check in the kitchen real quick." Once it arrived, our server poured the sauce over the meat & veggies on a hot plate (think fajitas style) and it sizzled. So, that means none of it was cooked in the sauce... no sense of the wok in the flavor, texture, or visual appearance. The ESBeef had redeemable texture in the vegetables, but the beef tasted really strange and the sauce was sort of thin and mediocre. The TCPork was abysmal: the meat was so tough I had to bite and tear off parts using my hands, then chew forever. The pork was definitely not slow-cooked and certainly not marinated or velveted or anything to tenderize it. The sauce was terribly imbalance and it was a real struggle to eat even a third of the meal. We crushed the steamed white rice but left nearly all of the meat and sauces behind. Atmosphere: the decor is initially so beautiful, but after sitting for 30min, it started to look fairly unclean. What quickly messed up this meal, though, was the birthday karaoke crew in the neighboring room. There was no sound barrier between the dining room and the 1 full hour of off-key terrible karaoke. It was brutal to endure, kind of maddening. We each went to the bathroom--here's what I saw. Toilet was full of un flushed pee and toilet paper, sink had 4" of standing water, zero draining going on. No paper towels. I decided to hold it and just use the edge of my sleeve to open the door to escape. When I told my fiancé that was rough, he said the men's room was exactly the same. Yiiiiiiiiiiikes. Service: our server was very polite and I think genuinely doing her best but clearly overwhelmed. She was speed-walking throughout the dining area (5 tables) and the back room with the karaoke party the whole hour we were there. We had super long pauses between being seated, ordering, and having our food served, but I don't think that's on her at all. Every time she cleared a table and brought dishes to the kitchen, there would be a LOUD clatter as if dishes were thrown and some fell to the floor and bounced around. Kitchen was otherwise completely quiet. We heard the table next to us say "last time we waited an hour for our food." Oh my. It's now 17min since we left and my stomach is getting knotted up, so that doesn't bode too well, oh boy. Was it the worst place ever? No, of course not. Was it deeply regrettable? Yes, I'd never go back. Avoid, avoid, avoid. read more

Spouse loves the green bean chicken. I've have yet to find my go to dish here. Not much favor in most dishes. Veggies change, but I'm convinced they use the same brown sauce on every other menu dish. If you have an undeveloped pallet and enjoy bland food, this is the place for you. read more

The service was good, but 2 of the 3 entres were not. The sweet sour shrimp that mu nephew ordered was very tasty and the shrimp was fresh and delicious. I had Kung pao chicken and I found it bland with just a hint of spice, and the chicken tasted like it was a few days old. It was nothing like what I had in China. I love that they have a menu for the typical Americanized Chinese food and another one with more authentic Chinese offerings. When I first came here a couple years ago I received soup and spring rolls containing meat even after specifying that I am vegetarian. They seem to be better educated on it now and I've had some really nice meals there since that first fumble. One particularly enjoyable aspect of the dining experience here is one of the servers, Andrew. He is such a sweet kid and does some awesome drawings on the receipt. We ordered food for 7 people for pick up. Everything was packaged and labeled carefully. The food was still piping hot once we were ready to eat. The egg rolls were huge did not get soggy. The crab rangoons were so good and not over cooked. They even gave us a huge bag of wontons for our egg drop soup! I had the cashew chicken and the portion was huge! Enough for 3 meals for me. The food was very good, it had a lot of flavor and I really enjoyed it. I had the garlic shrimp and they were very juicy and fresh. The vegetables may have been cut a bit to large. New owners now but I'm not sure if they have any experience at owning a restaurant. The service is really bad and extremely rude. The soup was watered down with no flavor at all. I'm guessing they changed cooks as well because the food is absolutely horrible. The meat was chewy with a rancid taste and smell. When I asked to return the food the owner demanded to know what was wrong and I told him everything was off and not asking nicely either but rather shouting it. What was really awkward was when the owner started screaming at the kitchen staff in back and repeating what I had just said. I ate nothing at all even the tea was not good and that's hard to mess that up. There are pros, and there are cons. The wait staff and "host" seem very nice, my waiter was real humorous too. The workers seem to have a warmer personality than most at any restaurant. I can see why the restaurant has plenty of regulars. The prices are pretty cheap, around $5-$6 for lunch that includes an entree, rice, soup, and crab cheese or egg roll. Big big portions. Small complaint would be the decor. Dimly lit restaurant, nothing too fancy. Larger complaint would be the food! I can't speak for all dishes, but my beef and broccoli was awful. I am the type to eat anything and everything, but I only ate two pieces of beef. It had just the strangest texture... kind of synthetic, not beefy. Too saucy, overcooked, and bland on top of that. Don't let the outside intimidated you, the food is very tasty and the staff are nice. The interior reminds me of my family's Chinese restaurant back in the 80's-90's. I ordered the chicken with vegetable and it came with a cup of soup. I ordered the egg drop and it wasn't abowl of chicken broth with some egg; it had lots of egg and vegetables! The chicken in the entree was tender and it had a lot of fresh veggies like mushrooms, broccoli, snap peas and carrots. This restaurant was a pleasant surprise as I drove through Saginaw. read more
