We got the 8 piece fried chicken - that's a whole chicken, and it was like no other fried chicken I have ever had. With a thick crust that gave a mighty crunch into some very moist chicken. We've been customers of Big J's ever since he opened. Lately there has been a problem with food being ready when promised. More than once we've had to wait over a half hour beyond the given pickup time when we ordered. They seem to be overwhelmed (maybe short staffed?) The ribs are still great. The fried chicken is way better than Rocky's across the street. Just can't count on food being ready on time. read more

Stopped by to grab something for dinner. Walked in front door, ordered, and waited about 15 minutes in the car with a beeper to signal when order was ready. Got a pound of brisket and a large container of mac and cheese. Pick up at the side window. Made for a perfect dinner for two. The next day used the remaining brisket as topping for a Panera pizza. The fat is so delicious that I ate it and took an extra cholesterol pill afterwards. Oh yeah forgot to mention the covered outdoor patio with picnic tables if one wants to eat on location. It's a nice addition to the space and far enough away from the roadway so car sounds are tolerable. read more

Finally got a chance to try this place and we were not disappointed. Smelled so good inside. Tiny place, takeout only. Got ribs, brisket, Mac n cheese, baked beans and cole slaw. Everything was great. Well seasoned and juicy meat. But the ribs were the star. The end piece had a crispy bark that was so tasty! They were very busy so recommend calling in your order ahead of time. The owner kept touching base that our order was being prepared. Very good service. We will be back. read more

Was looking for a good bbq place and went here with family based on reviews. Small place, take out only. When we placed our order there were 3 people in front of us. It took over an hour for us to get our food. I only saw 3 people leave with food ahead of us. We ordered brisket and ribs. It was probably the most dry brisket i have ever had. Could not eat it without adding bbq sauce. The ribs were just ok. Over sauced a bit. The sides were also disappointing - beans and sweet potatoes were out of a can. Awful experience all around. Too bad, my second visit was not at all acceptable. They were out of brisket, so I bought roast beef, along with slaw and baked beans. The beef was so tough I couldn't eat it (that's not an exaggeration), and the sides tasted like they were purchased instead of being made, both were very mundane, no reason to ever order another meal. In addition, it takes forever to get an order ready, one hour for this one after I ordered it over the phone. They seem to be unable to keep up with phone orders, even less so for people arriving and ordering in person. Perhaps other items are better or people are just extremely easy to please. Very nice staff, very friendly, but somewhat clueless about how to succeed. read more

Food was great! Got the brisket with potato salad and mac and cheese. Max and cheese wasn't that great. My husband got the bbq plate with the greens and Mac and cheese, he didn't like the Mac and cheese. Hush puppies were really good! No place to sit, so ate in car since outdoor seating was wet. Beware, --- this restaurant on Sweeten Creek is take out only, however, the owners have a nice, clean, sit down restaurant on Airport Road, directly across the street from Asheville Regional Airport, adjacent to a BP station, only a few blocks away.
