    Hillbilly Nachos, Outstanding!
    Mark E.

The food was outstanding. Pulled pork, Burnt Ends, Chicken, all top notch. Baked Beans were a perfect flavor, not too sweet. Excellent corn bread. My wife had the hIllbilly nachos covered in Pulled pork, BBQ Beans, Homemade cheese sauce, slaw, and Jalapeño Peppers....WOW! So good! Service was quick. They have a brand of pure sugar soda on tap that is way better than any other soda I have had. Sweet Tea was also brewed just right. If you are looking for excellent BBQ in the Asheville area this place will not disappoint, just check the hours before you arrive, they are limited.

Excellent little restaurant in a hidden gem of a spot. Tucked into the back corner of Riverridge shopping center next to Hamricks. On our way home from a round of golf, BBQ was decided as what we all four agreed upon. I hadnt been so off we went. Two of us deciding we wanted to try different things and share we ordered a brisket plate with slaw & Swett potato casserole. I ordered the BBQ plate with collards & cucumber salad. Cornbread for our bread. The other two ordered BBQ sandwiches & side. The BBQ was really good & plentiful portion as was the Brisket. The sandwiches were large & good sized portion as well. The sides were all excellent with exception of the collards not being up to par with everything else. I removed a star due to feeling as though the recipe they are using is off to me. Almost like the collards had beef broth added??? It just wasn't your traditional flavored collards. Great portion but just didn't like the flavor. The brisket was thick cut & great sized portion & very good! Definitely will be back & glad to have found it. As one of the older gents in our group who recommended this spot "I like it because of the sides!" He was right! Get the sweet potato casserole- you won't be disappointed!

I LOVE IT HERE!!!! Cruising through WNC as a little dumb vegan, you aren't expecting to find a ton of vegan food. And you're definitely not expecting to find a bbq restaurant with vegan bbq soy curls and jackfruit and collard greens and CORN BREAD, and green beans and slaw... right? 10/10 I love this place. Delicious food, friendly staff, no frills, tons of seating inside and it's honestly extremely inexpensive. I chose a vegecue sandwich from Black Bear for my birthday :) !!!!!!

We loved our dinner at Bears BBQ while visiting Ashville. I ordered the combo with brisket and pulled pork, hubs ordered the Bear Attack (corn bread topped with mac n cheese and choice of meat-he chose brisket) My brisket was super moist and flavorful, definitely among the best I've had. I do like a tiny bit more smoky flavor, but it was truly delicious. The pulled pork was also super tasty. Highly recommend.

Food is good. We got the jackfruit bbq dinner plate with vegan cornbread. The sides we chose were baked beans, collards, green beans and vinegar slaw. Green beans were soft and tender. Cornbread was very moist and tasty. Jackfruit really mimicked the bbq and had a nice flavor. Service was fast and they were following Covid Protocols. Only open seating was outside.

Best BBQ joint in Asheville for vegetarians and vegans, hands-down! Plus I came with a meat eater who got the pulled pork and everyone left very full and happy. I'm excited to get the family pack to share with family members.

    The best collard greens!

Chopped Brisket Plate was solid. I would have liked the brisket to be a little fattier. The collard greens were REALLY good!!

The restaurant had indoor seating, along with a large outdoor area with plenty of tables. We headed inside, got into a relatively short line, and tried to figure out the ordering process, which was a little confusing at first. We eventually figured it out. One thing on the menu caught my attention: "Moink balls," which were described as bacon-wrapped meatballs. When I asked the server what kind of meat was in them, he told me they were out of Moink balls. I said okay, but asked if he could still tell me what kind of meat was in the meatball. He seemed very annoyed by the question, said "meat," when I pressed him, he said that he didn't know. We ended up ordering pulled pork, ribs, roasted corn, and mac and cheese. The food itself was good, and I especially liked the corn. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite get past the way that server responded to what seemed like a simple and reasonable question.

A Hidden Gem for Truly Great BBQ…read more We decided to try Iron and Oak after reading some online reviews, and I'm so glad we did. This place is truly a hidden little gem, tucked right beside a brewery. You place your order outside, and there are several outdoor tables with heaters to keep you warm. Our server also let us know we were welcome to sit inside if we preferred, but we chose a cozy outdoor table right by a heater. It was perfect. My husband was craving ribs, and he hasn't stopped talking about them since. He said they were some of the best he's ever had -- tender, flavorful, and cooked just right. He ordered slaw as his side and really enjoyed it. I went with the pulled pork sandwich, and honestly, it was exceptional. The server asked if I wanted it with onions and pickles -- I said yes -- and then asked her to add slaw on top. She said "Of course!" with no hesitation and then took a moment to explain the whole routine since it was our first visit: where to get sauces, forks, napkins, and how they deliver your food to the table when it's ready. She was wonderful. The pulled pork itself was outstanding -- not one bit of fat, just tender, flavorful, perfectly cooked meat. Truly one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've ever had. I chose potato salad as my side, and it was delicious -- definitely passed the test, since potato salad can be hit or miss at many places. I forgot to take pictures, but trust me: this place is worth the trip. If you're in the mood for BBQ, make the drive and enjoy what I would honestly call some of the best barbecue in Asheville.

But once I picked off all of the fat I had a little bit of brisket meat left on my sandwich and it tasted really good. Everything tasted amazing but the fat content on the sandwich is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5.

Dry, not interesting, surprisingly poor given the high quality of everything else we tried (ribs, the Mountain Man burger special, the brisket, the sauces, the corn pudding, the baked beans, the mac and cheese, and the jalapeno cheese grits). If it's allowed, I would ask for a different side to swap in for the cornbread because it was so poor. The rest of the food, service, prices, space, etc.? Five stars. Just skip the cornbread! They didn't prepare any brisket that day and so we ordered the ribs. The ribs were served tepid and were not at all tender. It was difficult to chew off the bone. The smoked turkey was super dry and hard to swallow without adding bar-b-que sauce. They have several homemade bar-b-que sauces and we tried them all but settled on the pineapple habanero. It had a nice balanced flavor with a little kick. The Mac and cheese was the biggest let down for me as it was so bland and did not seem cheesy at all. I remember thinking that a box of Kraft would be better than those tasteless noodles. Overall a disappointing experience and would probably not go back.

On the plus side, the restaurant was incredibly easy to find and they actually have parking available, which is always a massive win when traveling. Once inside, we were seated at a high-top table, and our server was very pleasant throughout the meal. We started with the collard green and pimento cheese dip, which was supposed to come out hot in a skillet. Unfortunately, as I started dipping into the center, the middle of the dip was still cold. For mains, my husband ordered a chicken sandwich with a side of mac & cheese, and I went with the grilled cheese with candied bacon and tomato. Both of our sandwiches had the same issue: the tomato slices were cut incredibly thick--at least a half-inch. It made my husband's sandwich really hard to eat, to the point where he just took the tomato off and ate the chicken with a knife and fork. My grilled cheese was fine, but that massive tomato slice was just a bit much. As for the sides, my husband's mac & cheese was on the dry side. Mine wasn't dry, but it didn't really have a ton of flavor. I totally understand that the restaurant is trying to go for a fun, modern twist on southern classics, but for us, the execution fell a bit short. It was nice to try once while in town, but I'm not sure I'd visit again on a future trip to Asheville.

First, a logistics tip for anyone else visiting: give yourself plenty of extra time to find parking, as it takes a while to hunt down a spot down here. Also, double-check that you are making your reservation for the right location! There are a couple in the area and it can get confusing quickly. As for the food, my meal was quite good. I ordered the fried chicken with green beans and grits, and everything on my plate was delicious. However, my husband's meal was a bit of a letdown. He had the chicken and waffles--he felt his chicken was on the overcooked side, and the waffle itself had the texture of pancakes rather than being crisp. Service was also a bit slow during our visit. The most frustrating part was noticing that our food came out after a table of four that had actually been seated after we were. It was worth a try while we were in town, but given the service pacing and the hiccups with my husband's food, I don't think we'd head back on a return trip.
