I was hungry so I grabbed a double cheeseburger. It was meaty, cheesy & oniony. The flavor wasn't too bad but didn't knock my socks off. The potato salad was good. A Hidden Gem for Truly Great BBQ We decided to try Iron and Oak after reading some online reviews, and I'm so glad we did. This place is truly a hidden little gem, tucked right beside a brewery. You place your order outside, and there are several outdoor tables with heaters to keep you warm. Our server also let us know we were welcome to sit inside if we preferred, but we chose a cozy outdoor table right by a heater. It was perfect. My husband was craving ribs, and he hasn't stopped talking about them since. He said they were some of the best he's ever had -- tender, flavorful, and cooked just right. He ordered slaw as his side and really enjoyed it. I went with the pulled pork sandwich, and honestly, it was exceptional. The server asked if I wanted it with onions and pickles -- I said yes -- and then asked her to add slaw on top. She said "Of course!" with no hesitation and then took a moment to explain the whole routine since it was our first visit: where to get sauces, forks, napkins, and how they deliver your food to the table when it's ready. She was wonderful. The pulled pork itself was outstanding -- not one bit of fat, just tender, flavorful, perfectly cooked meat. Truly one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've ever had. I chose potato salad as my side, and it was delicious -- definitely passed the test, since potato salad can be hit or miss at many places. OK - this is an update. I ate at Iron & Oak last week but they were out of brisket so we had their pulled pork, brisket chili and hamburger. As I said last time; "we have had a lot of pulled pork throughout Asheville and have to say this is probably the best! The chili was good as was the burger but the pulled pork was the highlight." When I went back I made sure to get there when they opened and was able to get the brisket and ribs. And I have to say that I finally found the best BBQ in Asheville. The brisket reminded me of Franklin's in Austin - simply the best - tender and not dried out with so much flavor. The ribs also did not disappoint and for me also rated also as some of the best I have had. Best brisket outside of Texas I've had since 2019. I've travelled all over, and even after the most recent natural disaster, the brisket here is legit good. They must have a good source for their smoke and heat. When we had their brisket tacos and soup they were both very good. Any time in can get a good brisket sandwich I'm happy. Expect to wait in line on a Saturday. Not sure about other days. But once you order, they bring your food out quickly. We got brisket sandwiches with mashed potatoes and brisket queso and chips. The sides were really good. We put some of the queso on our sandwiches and that was really good. However, my sandwich had a ton of fat on it so I had to deconstruct my sandwich and pick it all off, and got my hands disgustingly dirty in the process. But once I picked off all of the fat I had a little bit of brisket meat left on my sandwich and it tasted really good. BBQ is a contentious topic in these parts but I think it is fair to say Iron and Oak is arguably the best BBQ spot in town. Texas style brisket is the focus but they back that up with awesome pulled pork, great sides and definatively the best burger in Asheville. I haven't tried their baby backs yet but that is on my bucket list. Nicely paired with a brewery, you can put together a handsome lunch or dinner at this play, hear live music and just hang with nice folks. I love their potato salad and slaw and pickles. Unlike some other popular BBQ spots this is not a candy store where everything is smothered in sugar. The ingredients and the smoke are the star. Their smoke brisket burger (only available on Wed and Sun) is epic. There are a lot of burger that get props from foodies in town but this one is special. The owners are sweethearts and are always working hard to ensure you get great food and have a good time. If I would want anything, it would be a few more vegan options for my relatives so I could justify coming by more often. read more

Consistently the best Texas-style brisket in Asheville, hands-down. Nothing else comes close. I've been selfishly holding out on this review since they opened, but at this point it really seems like the secret is out. Initially when I find a new BBQ joint I always temper my excitement if the first visit is great as it seems one of the most difficult things to nail down in this realm is consistency. After so many visits I have not been let down once and I've settled into a routine of always getting the chopped brisket sandwich on-site or just getting a pound of brisket (half chopped/sliced) to take home. At this point you can't sleep on the brisket so don't show up Sunday expecting to find any (ribs would be your consolation prize) and often times it's already gone by Saturday afternoon. Brisket was amazing! However the only non beef non pork they offer is impossible beef. Why not chicken.?Smoked chicken? Not everyone likes impossible beef. Was not a fan of the macaroni salad. Don't know why it just didn't hit. Liked the potato salad though. The service was quick and very friendly. They serve outdoors on covered picnic tables and it happened to rain the night before we went so my heinie got wet. So take that into consideration if you are taking a date or a kid. We had two sandwiches since it was lunch, and the brisket was fall-apart tender, with perfectly blackened outsides. The potato salad and dill Mac were good, but not anything too special. I did go here about a month ago, but there are some great things working for it. Its attached to a brewery which makes it amazing even though all service is outside. We sat very near the smoker which kept bugs at bay, and smelled amazing. I ordered the vegan bbq sandwich which was essentially a sloppy joe and actually very good. We also split the brisket queso which was good on queso light on brisket. That may have been the only detractor. It was very very good. The coleslaw and potato salad were on point. read more

This might just be the best kept secret in the Asheville BBQ scene! Full stop. We've tried them all, 12 Bones, Moe's, Luella's, Little Pigs, Bear's, Buxton Hall, Haywood Smokehouse, & Black Bear's (I might be missing a few), and I would put this up against any of them. This feels more like a fusion BBQ joint at its core. The people at Iron & Oak have brought together the best flavors of North Carolina pork with Texas staples like brisket, hot sausage links, and they serve it Texas style on top of slices of white bread as well. They have sauces inspired by each, and they are fantastic too. Iron & Oak sits next to a great micro-brewery called River Rhapsody, with enough beer, seltzer, cider, & non-alcoholic options that everyone has options, and enough indoor and outdoor seating that even on a Sunday lunch rush, it didn't feel overloaded. Classic BBQ ambience where you sit right next to the smoker on picnic tables, and they leave you alone and let you have a great time outside with friends & family. This is a no frills, small 2-3 person family/friend run team who give you great service while being placed in Woodfin, about a 5-10 minute drive from downtown Asheville, so you won't have to fight any city or tourist crowds to eat here. But, for the food: we ordered a combo plate (not seen on the menu, but they were nice enough to work with me). This got me a serving of pulled pork, 3 ribs (available only on Sunday's), 2 sides, dill pickles, onion, and 2 slices of bread. For my 2 sides, I got the coleslaw and the loaded potato salad, added a bowl of dill pickles, and I couldn't resist adding a Texas hot sausage link for $3 (bought from Texas staple BBQ restaurant, Southside Market). When I learned this, my heart skipped a beat and I knew I was in NC/TX BBQ fusion heaven! Nothing, and I mean nothing, missed the mark. This was classic 10/10 pulled pork (not chopped, very different), with awesome creamy coleslaw, just the way you want it if you've been born and raised in Western NC like I have. The Texas hot link was incredible and full of flavor, and should be added to your order as well. Sauces complimented everything we ordered, and they had options for everyone (classic Western NC sweet, a smoky TX style, and a Eastern NC vinegar based as well). The ribs were great and meaty, although I think the pork was the star of the show for me. It was the type of food where it was all gone before a picture was taken, and I was tempted to order seconds. The best thing is, I came on a Sunday, so although I got great ribs, I wasn't even able to try their brisket namesake, which I will have to do ASAP! I also missed out on some of their rotating sides, like Dill Macaroni Salad, Dad's Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, & Brisket Chili (can you tell I've already planned my next order? HA!). This is a small operation that opened in the last few years, and I risk this great BBQ secret getting out, but I think the awesome experience I had at Iron & Oak should be shared and the great people that have created this fantastic place should be supported!
