Tucked behind the little ice cream shops and beach traffic sits one of those places you almost miss if you are not paying attention. Big Kahuna Pub and Grill has been serving Seaside since around 2007, and somehow it still feels like one of those hidden little local secrets you have to hunt down to find. The place is small, busy, and definitely popular with the locals, so things might take a little longer when the crowd rolls in, but honestly that is part of the charm. Everybody seemed friendly, laid back, and happy to be there. Five stars just for the atmosphere and kindness alone. And then there is the Bloody Mary. Good grief. The thing comes stacked with enough food to count as lunch, including the famous burger sitting right on top. It is one of those ridiculous creations that sounds crazy until you see one go by and suddenly every single person in the restaurant wants one. Their Bloody Marys have basically become coast legend status at this point. The menu itself is pretty simple and straightforward, burgers, comfort food, drinks, nothing overly fancy, just solid beach town food done right. Sometimes those are the best kinds of places anyway. If you are wandering around Seaside and want something that feels more local than touristy, give this little hidden gem a try. Checked out this place for a drink while waiting on dinner reservations and it was wonderful. It's back off the street but great use of the space. The service was top notch and personable. Absolutely a great standard burger! Wife and I thought the classic burger with bacon we got on our Bloody Mary hit all the boxes for a great classic burger! We were very happy with both the service and the food. We needed to sit outside because we had our dog with us, and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. They were incredibly dog‑friendly and made sure our pup was taken care of just as well as we were. Myself and many of my friends have been fortunate enough to have had the privilege of dining here many times, over the years. The name is what got us in, but the amazing Big Kahuna Burger, jello-shots and fabulous service have made this a MUST visit each and every time we come to Seaside! The owners are some of the nicest, most accommodating people in Seaside. They often cook the food and make the drinks. Until I tried the Big Kahuna burger here , I would've thought someone crazy to put pineapple on a burger. It is one of my favorite burgers, anywhere. Unlike many places, the jello shots are sometimes so strong , I have to have a chaser of water. "That's what I'm talking about!!!" ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Dive type bar with an island vibe. The mai tai was very good and incredibly strong. The bartender warned me as she set it down. The beer flight was fun and had some solid selections. The clam chowder is more potato than clam but very tasty and perfect on a cold day. It took awhile for our salads to come out due to a mix up in the back of the house but that was fine, we didn't really have room on the table anyways. The chicken nuggets & fries were basic pub fare. Biggest gripe was that we asked for water twice and it didn't show up until we were almost done. My uncle wanted some hot tea because it was so cold outside but understandably, being more bar than restaurant, they only had iced tea. The restroom paint is very cool and fun. I'm not sure what celebration or farm event we missed but they were hauling a bail of hay out through the front door. It was very random but kind of entertaining. I was told (and tempted by) the promise of a loaded Bloody Mary. It was impressive. I live in Salem. But got a chance to come through Seaside. Perfect. But when I got there, it was closed. There was a sign saying "staffing problems. Closed. It was about 1:30 PM. So, I went to Finns' and several other places asking for a loaded Bloody Mary. No other establishment offered one. So they had a supposed franchise on such a fabulous offer. Now I've just finished visit 2 & 3rd time to Seaside. It was closed on 2nd AND 3rd time. The internet said it was open on all three times. When I checked with a neighboring business about Kuhuna's hours, I was told that these owners (the 3rd set of owners) do not seem to have regular hours. This is a sadness. Where's the Big Kahuna? no Loco Moco This restaurant is located in downtown Seaside along Broadway Street and while the name makes one think that they serve Hawaiian food they don't have anything Hawaiian on their menu. The lady owner was not friendly either (no Aloha spirit welcome?) and was even rude when we asked her if they served Loco Moco. Well, that should've been our signal to jet out of there but, whatever, we were already seated and we didn't have anything scheduled that morning. It took a while for the server to take our orders. I had a bowl of clam chowder (served in a styrofoam bowl) and hubby and I split a fish & chips. I've had better fish & chips at a Tugboat hole in the wall place, I ended up giving my share to the hubby... here, have it all. Clam chowder was okay. I'm sure their alcohol drinks were great -- oyster shooters, Jell-O shots, Bloody Mary, beer and happy hour cocktails, etc. but for the food I ate I can't rate anymore than a 3.5 stars. 5 star service from Patrick. He is the bartender, server and cashier at Big Kahuna. Doesn't matter how busy he was, he remained super nice to everyone. Drinks were good. The mai tai was strong and refreshing. The seafood platter was good except for the breading of the oysters which was very salty. The clam chowder was ok. The chili cheese fries was supposedly good too according to my little monster. I was fascinated by their Bloody Mary. It was overflowing with pickled veggies, shrimps, sausage and other stuff. Went here for lunch on vacation with my sister and our partners and this was by far the best place we went! The food was great, and the service was even better! I wish I remembered our servers name but she was the absolute sweetest lady! She brought little dog treats out for my sisters dog every time she came to check on us and even asked the first time if it was ok if she gave our dog a treat (which I really respect as an animal owner bc of any unknowns, it's just respectful in my opinion). I've been here a few times. This place drew me in because of the Pulp Fiction movie: they have a Big Kahuna Burger ($10) and Sprite. So that's what I get each time. As I eat the burger, I can genuinely say "mmm, this is a tasty burger". The chili cheese curly fries ($7) are also good. I tried the Bloody Mary this time around, and it was decent, but they didn't tell me it was $17 until the bill came! No wonder they don't list prices, gotta bank on that tourist trap strategy. That's kind of a rip off, especially for a mid level cocktail. You can get a top quality Bloody Mary for less than that at most places. I'm just missing the Fonz for a step back into Happy Days. This place is small and cute and there's a wall dedicated to The King. I can see it getting very crowded on a sunny day. The burgers are greasy & delicious. Baskets of curly fries & their own homemade clam chowder (which I didn't try). This was my reward for going on the Tilt-A-Whirl where I screamed my head off (not kidding or exaggerating). The menu has been updated so it's not what's pictured in the Yelp photos. Not very Hawaiian but the fam and I had a blast anyway. Very beautiful, clean, and service was super friendly. The pomegranate mimosa was so good! The group got some burgers, shrimp and fries, fish and chips, and clam chowder. Very good all around. We sat outside and the server was so worried we'd get cold, she offered to have us come back in if you got too cold. (It was perfect to us, though!)
